Characters: Neville L., Seamus F.
When Seamus ran away from the castle, he didn't quite know what to expect. He was sick of his controlling mother and his depressed father, that frankly, he decided he wasn't cut out for the life of a prince and left immediately.
Leaving with only a horse and a teal cape had seemed like a good idea at the time. Especially while heading into the Forbidden Forest.
That was, until the horse galloped off into the distance, and the cape tore of some rose bushes he had happened to cross. Yep, it wasn't all that glamour. By that point, he had kinda decided to go back to the castle when he realised he was lost.
That was also a major blow to his plans. But thankfully, and luckily, the Fates seemed to have smiled upon his as he stumbled onto a (slightly decrepit-looking) gigantic mansion in the middle of the woods he had never heard about.
Being a prince, Seamus knew whoever was there would take him in immediately, and was a little disappointed when there was no one to open the door for him and he had to push the massive iron gate behind him on his own. And it was only slightly unnerving when the door slammed behind him, without anyone having to push it.
The more he ventured into the place, the more he got the impression that it was deserted: there were no gardeners in the gardens, no chauffeurs driving carriages around, no butler to open the door. But when he came in, however, there was a table laden with food.
Seamus ate to his heart's content, assuming whoever owned this place had set it out for him, even though he had seen absolutely no one. When the night fell, he wondered through the empty but illuminated hallways in the search of a bedroom, until he stumbled upon one, abandoned but fit for a prince, and fell into deep slumber.
The next morning, the prince began to explore the castle, trying to find someone to talk to, to see whom this palace belonged to as he had seen not a soul since he had gotten there. But his search was long, and there were a lot of corridors. After turning left, right, left, right for what seemed like hours, Seamus decided to give up, and returned to the Dining room.
Sure enough, there was a sumptuous meal but still no sign of anyone.
And so the next morning, he set to discover the gardens of this castle, this mansion. After strolling pleasantly through a couple of freshly mown lawns, Seamus arrived at a greenhouse, a Herbology greenhouse, he knew.
He pushed inside and was immediately met with a puff of warm air and the smell of growing plants. But that wasn't the only thing he found in this mysterious greenhouse. There was a man, a boy really, no older than him: 17 or so, who was carefully watering the plants around him.
"Oh, hello," he said simply, blushed, as though he was shy, and continued pouring water on the greens.
Seamus was almost overjoyed to have found someone. And he thought it especially lucky to have found this someone, because, let's be honest, he really wasn't bad-looking.
"Are you the gardener?" he asked.
"Sort of," he replied quietly, before filling his sprinkler again.
"Would you point me to whoever owns this place?" Seamus demanded.
"Well, that would be me," the boy replied.
"And you are?" Seamus was surprised.
The boy seemed to hesitate for a moment. "I guess you can call me Neville. And you?"
"I am Prince Seamus Finnigan of Irelandia," Seamus announced, using his best regal voice.
The boy, Neville, nodded, and then turned back to his plants. There was a shy sort of manner about him, but his presence was calming, as though he lived in a perpetual state of slow and relaxed.
"Where might I find a servant, in this house of yours?" he demanded.
"I'm afraid there's only me," Neville replied.
"Only you?" Seamus asked confused. "But then who set up the table the other night?"
"Oh, that was me."
"Did you know I was coming?" he questioned.
"The plants told me."
"The plants?" he chose to ignore the weird comment. "But you just decided to set the table, you, for a random stranger."
"Kindness can get one anywhere."
"You did this… for me?"
"Yes."
Seamus was flabbergasted. Okay, he was a prince, and the way he had been treated was the way any prince should have been treated, but still. It was extremely surprising that Neville had done all of this for him, an unexpected guest, all on his own, just out of the goodness of his heart.
And so that was how their life would go on. Seamus had no wish, for the moment, of going on, and he would meet Neville, this shy, attractive boy, in his Greenhouse and they would spend the day together, just talking about who knows what. Neville would always surprise him with random acts of kindness and for a long time, it was enough for the two of them.
But after a while, Seamus did miss his family, and he longed to go back home, to his controlling mother and his depressive father but who his missed dearly.
"I think I'd like to leave," Seamus told him one day.
"Oh," Neville looked bothered, "You can't."
"Why ever not?" Seamus demanded.
"There's a curse on me and this house," he explained, "whoever comes in can never leave."
"WHAT!" Seamus roared, "But I need to see my family again!"
Neville looked a little sad. "I can show them to you, if you wish."
"How?" he demanded, again.
And Neville led him through the greenhouse, into a room he'd never seen, filled with roses, and in the middle of it was a gigantic mirror bordered with silver flowers and ornaments.
"Mirror mirror," Neville said, "Show Seamus his family."
And the mirror swirled silvery hues of blue and purple and before his very eyes, the mirror was showing him his mother and his father. Seamus was astounded at the magic, but then again, everything was mysterious about this castle, so he didn't really know why he was so surprised.
His mother and his father looked absolutely fine, not at all the wreck he hoped they were, bemoaning his absence. Actually, they looked they looked a lot happier then they had ever been. Seamus' heart broke a little when he saw that, and a tear threatened to escape.
Neville looked embarrassed when he saw this. But then he did something unexpected. He pulled Seamus into a hug and kissed his head. Seamus cried a little.
"You know, I4ll be very happy if you stay here," he said.
"I don't deserve you," Seamus replied.
"Shhh."
"Maybe I will stay, just a little."
And that was exactly what happened. The curse was never broken, neither Neville nor Seamus ever left, but it was just find. Kindness could definitely get one anywhere.
