Gathering her things that evening Kate reached for the light turning it off when Marshall walked into the office.
"ah Kate I am glad I have caught you."
"I am running late Sir I need to pick the girls up from dance club. Can this wait till morning?" she said pulling her bag on to her shoulder
" its fine. I just wanted to check you were okay after this afternoon?" he smiled
"I will be. He always finds a way to piss me off. If you will excuse my French" Kate sighed.
"well as I said if you need to talk you know where to find me" Marshall smiled
"thank you, Sir," she smiled pulling her bag back on to her shoulder as it had slipped down for the umpteenth time.
It was a relatively short drive to the school as most of the school traffic had already cleared and it wasn't quite time for the main rush hour of everyone heading home from work. She actually made it with a few moments to spare. Walking in to the school office where pick up from most of the after-school activities where she smiled at the receptionist who was still there.
Both girls came running up with their hair falling from the braids.
"hey" Kate forced a smile her mind still on her conversation with Jim. "right have you got everything?" she asked as both girls were notorious for leaving something behind like cardigans and water-bottles.
"yes mum" they both smiled looking up at her
"right then off we go" Kate said pulling the girls coats back up on to their shoulders
"Aimee McGregor" a voice called walking up the corridor turning Kate saw one of the young teaching assistants that helped with the dance walking up towards them. She was holding out a purple glittery bottle "you left this in the hall" she smiled
"thank you" Kate sighed turning to Aimee "you would forget your head if it wasn't screwed on" Kate smiled kissing Aimee on the top of her head. "right now, have we defiantly got everything" Kate folded her arms looking at the girls
"yes. I think" was the response
"right. Come on then let's go" she smiled heading them out the door.
"can I sit in the front mummy" Aimee asked
"no, I am not spending half an hour moving your seat. You can sit in the back with your sister" Kate sighed
"please mummy" Aimee just fluttered her eyes at her mum
"nice try madam now get in the car" Kate smiled.
Stopping at the gates checking it was clear her mind was still playing over what Jim had said. 'you will regret this' she wished she knew what he was up to so she could back herself up. Gripping her hands against the steering wheel she sighed, A horn sounding behind her brought her back to the present. Looking in the mirror she held her hand up as an apology before pulling off.
Looking at the little clock on the dashboard it was coming up to 5:00. "who fancies a Maccas for tea" she smiled
"yay" both girls cheered bouncing in their car seats.
"alright" Kate laughed pulling in to the drive through. "what do you fancy" she smiled turning slightly in her seat. Thankfully there was a bit of a que so they had time to think.
"nuggets" Sovay called out straight away. Which was obvious she never went for anything different.
"can I have a burger" Aimee eventually decided
"are you going to eat it all this time" Kate frowned. The last time she said she wanted a burger she didn't eat it all because of all the 'stuff' that was on it.
"i promise I will mummy" she smiled sweetly.
"you better" Kate grinned pulling up to the order point. She made sure she asked for Aimee's burger plain as it was the mustard and ketchup, she didn't like.
Collecting from the window she was glad it all felt hot and fresh, although it would more than likely be cold by the time, they got home but then that was what the microwave was for. It wasn't too far to get back to Nikki's
Placing the bag on the table she pulled out the 2 happy meal boxes opening them to check who's was who's. tipping the things in to the box Kate placed them Infront of the girls having made sure she removed the toy first as she knew they would be more interested in the toy than eating their dinner.
Sitting in the bathroom later that evening Kate smiled plunging her hand in to the bubbles "look who has come to play" she smiled looking at both girls pulling her hand out which was covered in bubbles
"Boris" they both laughed as Kate made the pile of bubbles tickle their ears as a greeting.
Reaching up she grabbed the shower head so she could wash their hair. Which was more drama than it was worth as both would wriggle and squirm as she rubbed the shampoo in to their blond locks and would then kick off blue murder as some of the soap would run in to their eyes.
Grabbing the towel Kate wrapped it round Aimee first lifting her out from the bath.
"mummy you have given me Sovay's towel" she said looking down at the purple princess towel Kate had wrapped around her
"it's a towel it doesn't matter" she said turning her attentions to Sovay so she could wash her hair "go and get dried and your jim-jams on." she said combing the conditioner from Sovay's hair.
Lifting her out she wrapped her in the second towel. "right come on then let's get in to our jammies and then a story okay" she smiled. Walking across the room into the girl's bedroom.
After combing through the girl's hair, making sure they had no extra guests in the hair, she lay on the bed next to Sovay picking up a book
"ready" she smiled clearing her throat "Here is Edward bear, coming downstairs now. Bump. Bump. Bump on the back of his head..." she smiled. Closing the book after reading the first story
"more" Sovay said.
"tomorrow" Kate smiled pulling the sheet around her "night sweet" she said kissing the top of her head.
Moving over to Aimee she pulled the blanket up "night sweet" she said kissing her.
Turning the lamp off. she walked in to the living. Heading in to the kitchen she poured herself a glass of wine from the fridge.
"so what's all this" Nikki said taking the glass Kate had just poured
"a drink" Kate said pulling another glass off the side pouring another drink.
"what's happened" Nikki asked
"nothing" Kate smiled
"really because you had Maccas. You never get Maccas on a school night. Come on what's happened" Nikki pushed
"nothing really" Kate forced a smile.
"i know something has happened its written all over your face"
Taking a glug of her glass she sighed "Jim's in town"
"what when. why" Nikki asked watching as Kate walked over to the sofa
"he turned up at NAVCOM this afternoon. He wants to see the girls"
"what did you say"
"no of course. Which he didn't take too well."
"Kit but what..." Nikki began
"no he had his chance. He has broken their hearts too many times before and its always me that has to deal with the fall out" Kate said "i am going off to bed. Night" she sighed taking her glass with her
"night kit" Nikki Sighed she could tell Kate was wound up. Jim always did that to her. She just hoped for her friend's sake more than anything Jim wouldn't cause trouble.
Curling up Kate rested her head against the headboard. It couldn't be the only reason he was in town there had to be more to it than that. Just as she was finally moving on and finding some happiness this had to happen. Putting it to the back of her mind she couldn't worry about it now. Her phone buzzed sliding it towards her she smiled as it was a text from Mike. Shooting a response back she sighed switching the lamp off and pulling the blankets around her. She would worry about Jim in the morning but right now her mind was all over the place with if's and but's all buzzing around.
