Home of Derek Morgan – 1 month later –

Savannah had survived and for that everyone was grateful; especially Derek who all agreed would have been destroyed under the guilt had she died. He'd renewed his promise to her to do whatever he had to do to be with her. Even as he uttered the promise again, his heart broke because Penelope occupied his thoughts and his heart. Perhaps his life now was punishment for his sins, but if that were true, why did Penelope have to suffer too.

Derek had temporarily moved in with Savannah to help her continue her recovery. Everyone else in his life had made their cases for him to reconsider but he needed to do this. Most of his memories had returned and in fact, he was back to work on a limited basis helping from home since he still had several therapy sessions with the bureau psychologist before he would be allowed back full-time.

There was one thing that had not returned; his memory of his engagement to Savannah and every time he asked her about it, she managed to change the subject or give him answers that were so vague that they seemed odd and never sparked any recollection. He didn't remember discussing marriage, ever and he definitely didn't remember proposing to her.

Savannah was gambling, the risks and odds were high and day by day, she prayed that Derek would believe that they had been happily engaged before he left for New York. He kept asking about the engagement because his mind would not allow him to accept the story she wanted him to believe. She was a doctor, and she knew that with each day that passed, Derek could regain his memory about them.

Savannah couldn't help thinking that if she could get Derek to make love to her and if she could get pregnant, he would never leave her. The reality of that happening however, would have to wait. Her doctor had ordered her to wait another few months before engaging in any sexual activity. Still, her love for him was steadfast and she enjoyed having him around. He was so attentive, and his actions proved his devotion to her, but she could see the sadness in his eyes. Most times, he seemed so far away just going through the motions. As desperately as she wanted him in her life, she wasn't sure that the shell of a man that had returned was enough to keep her truly happy in the long run.

Home of Penelope Garcia –

It was eleven a.m. and Penelope was in bed. She was exhausted and if her phone hadn't awakened her, she would still be comfortably under her blankets. It was over a month since Derek had left but she still found it hard to keep her thoughts off of him. They'd both promised not to forget each other, but it was hard getting through the day. She was always exhausted and now she felt as if she were coming down with the flu; mornings were the worst.

Sam had managed to worm his way back into her life. She was tired of turning down his invitations to lunch and dinner and so she'd begun getting used to having him around again; if nothing else, he was a distraction. Still, it didn't make up for the emptiness she felt with Derek being gone.

Derek had begun calling after the first week, but she refused to answer; sending his calls to voicemail. Hearing his voice, knowing that they couldn't have a future was a pain she could not manage. She had however kept in contact with JJ and the two women had formed a fast friendship. They had agreed to keep their friendship a secret between them. JJ was certain that the two were not engaged but now that they were living under the same roof, that seemed to confirm the engagement.

"Good morning!" JJ started cheerfully.

"Hey...JJ..."

"Please tell me you're not still in bed."

"Okay, I won't tell you."

"Really, Penelope? This is becoming a bad habit."

"I know but this is what happens when Derek Morgan walks into your life and then leaves." She said sarcastically.

"I could say the same about you. Morgan looks like death warmed over these days."

Penelope was awake now as she pulled herself to a sitting position.

"Is he okay? With Savannah out of the hospital, I would think he'd be just peachy."

"Well, he's not. Oh, he's trying to be the dutiful boyfriend but he's miserable."

"I'm sorry to hear that."

"Are you really?"

"Of course, I am! What kind of question is that JJ?"

"The man has been trying to call you, but he says his calls just go to voicemail. Are you trying to kill him?"

"C'mon, that's a little dramatic don't you think? What am I supposed to say? When's the wedding and can I come?"

"No, but he's gotten most of his memories back and all I know is that he's not happy."

"Most of his memories?"

"Garcia, call him; see for yourself."

"JJ..."

"Call him Penelope!"

Home of Derek Morgan – Evening- 1 week later

The house was quiet; Savannah had gone to bed hours ago and he relished the time alone. The television was muted, and he sat in the den sipping on his second drink. This had become his routine; the only way he could relax enough to get to sleep. Tonight, was harder than usual and he thought about going for a run. His clothes were in the room where Savannah was sound asleep and he didn't want to wake her so, he settled on the couch. His phone vibrated on the table and he was shocked to see her name flash across the display.

"Hey..."

"Derek?"

He closed his eyes at the sound of her voice.

"How are you?" He asked.

"I'm, okay."

"I didn't expect to hear from you."

"I'm sorry for not answering your calls. It's just..."

"I know, I know." He interrupted. "It's hard. I miss you...Penelope."

The silence was heavy between them.

"I miss you too. Are you okay?" She asked.

"No. No I'm not okay."

"I can't believe that you walked into my life just for us to fall in love and not be able to be together." She sighed.

"Penelope...I..."

"Derek, I don't think we should do this..."

"Do what?"

"We can't do this! You're engage to Savannah and I'm here. I don't want to be a problem in your life."

"That's just it. I..."

"Derek?" Savannah interrupted.

He hadn't heard her enter the room. She was supposed to be asleep; she was always a sound sleeper. He wondered if she had heard his conversation.

"Derek? Derek are you there?" Penelope asked on the other line.

"Hey, I have to go. I'll call you back okay?"

"No Derek; don't call me back. Penelope responded tearfully, ending the call.

"Hey Baby, are you coming to bed?" Savannah asked.

He saw the hope in her eyes and the desperation as he turned to face her.
