Super excited for this chapter and what it will lead to, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have writing it. (the weekday, date, and all that jazz is really specific for me and my writing process just an FYI)
Friday, December 10th
(Julie is 21 weeks pregnant)
"Tonight the West Cambria Mustangs will take on the Dillon Panthers in the Texas High School Semi Finals. It ought to be a good game, the Panthers are ranked number one in the state and have JD McCoy - candidate for Texas quarter back of the year - and Tim Riggins - possible candidate for the High School All-American team - on their roster," The radio in Walt Riggins' truck reported. Walt put the truck in park and pulled the map from the console of his pickup. West Cambria is only about twenty-five miles from here, I could probably make his game tonight, Walt thought.
The stands were packed at the game tonight, but somehow Walt Riggins still located his eldest son in the sea of yellow and blue.
"Billy, hey," Walt greeted Billy from behind. Billy quickly spun around on his heels and faced his father who he hadn't seen in three years.
"Dad?" Billy asked, voice full of shock. "What are you doing here?"
"I live about twenty-five miles away and heard on the radio Dillon was playing, thought I'd come watch Tim," Walt answered. I can't believe he has the guts to just show up! The last time he showed up was a train wreck... Billy thought.
"I'll be right back, gotta get some popcorn from the concession stand," Billy lied. Did Tim know he was coming? Did Tim invite him? I've gotta tell him... Billy made his way down to where the team would be entering and waited. Eventually, a herd of blue jerseys stampeded past Billy. He spotted Tim's number and reached out to grab the sleeve of his jersey.
"What the hell are you doing Billy? I've gotta play a game!" Tim shouted.
"Dad's here," Billy simply stated.
"What?" Was the only thing Tim could get out before being shooed towards the field by Mac. He kept looking over his shoulder at his brother with a shocked look, trying to comprehend what he had just been told. Dad is here? Why?
The Semi Final game was a close one, but luckily the Panthers came out on top and now they are going to the State Finals. Julie quickly found Tim on the field after the game.
"Hey Jules," Tim quickly greeted. "I gotta talk to Billy, be right back," He added rushing off to find Billy and his father who was supposedly at the game. Tim easily found Billy snd Walt just outside the group of people congregated on the field.
"Timmy!" Walt greeted, "You played a great game son!"
"Don't call me your son," Tim quietly muttered under his breath, only Billy was able to hear.
"What are you doing here?" Tim asked.
"I heard you were playing, and I live pretty close," Walt responded. He was getting pretty close to Tim, and Tim swore he could smell alcohol on his breath. Is he drinking again? Tim wondered. "Billy, you care if I come and stay with ya'll so I can watch Timmy play in the State Finals,"
"Umm... yeah... I guess," Billy responded unsure of himself. The last time he stayed it didn't end too well... Billy thought. Tim or I can always kick him out, that worked pretty good last time.
"I'm going to go find Jules, I guess I'll see ya'll at home," Tim stated.
"Who is Jules?" Walk asked when Tim walked off.
"Julie, his girlfriend," Billy responded.
"Hey, is everything ok?" Julie asked with concern when Tim started walking towards her.
"My dad showed up. And he just invited himself to stay at our house until the Finals," Tim answered running his hands through his long brown locks.
When Tim got off the bus, he took his time to get to his truck. He was dreading going home with his dad being there, especially if his suspicions about him drinking again were right. Tim slowly drove home, a contrast to his normal habit of speeding. He lingered in his driveway trying to delay entering his house. When he finally decided to go in, he took his time.
He walked in to find reruns from a golf tournament playing on the TV.
"You want a beer little bro?" Billy greeted.
"No I'm going to bed," Tim refused.
"You don't want to stay and catch up?" Walt asked.
"What is there to catch up on?" Tim shot back.
"How about you tell me about your girlfriend?" Walt asked. "Ya'll seem pretty serious."
"Not tonight," Tim responded dryly. He was trying everything he could to avoid the conversation about Julie he felt coming on. Tim quickly walked down the hallway to his room, leaving no time for Walt or Billy to stop him.
Hope you enjoyed reading that as much as I enjoyed writing it!
