A/N: Yes it's another Shimmerpaw POV chapter, but now things are getting set in motion. Although I would love to continue peace, it's time to set the plot moving with this chapter.
Shatteredlake lay curled up in a ball, her bones old and tired. Cats she has known and seen grow up as kits settle in nests around her, in the cold and nearly empty Elders den. But Shatteredlake lay waiting as she turned up to the now darken night sky, the stars glimmering up above her head. As one of the lights descended, stand before her. "Redwind… I have waited long for this moment." The she-cat purred.
But the reddish brown tabby closed his eyes. "I'm sorry my love, but the last one is dead… you are what remains of the past now. StarClan would never have wished this upon you, if there was no other choice."
Shatteredlake's gaze darkened, as the reddish brown tom embraced her in a hug. "My love, I have been chosen to bestow unto you… eternal life. Until the return of our enemy will bring to you peace, but not before you will return what we four carried; to let the clans rise up to challenge Shred… once more."
Shatteredlake could felt life return to her body, although her physical body remains untouched and aged. "But, I was hoping…"
"You will be reunited with everyone you know in time, for your memory will never fade from your mind."
Shatteredlake dipped her head, as she sighed. "Fine, then I shall wait…"
"Forever, and ever I will wait."
…
Shimmerpaw sorted through the herb storage, her paws grazing over the leaf of one when she smelled Barkclaw burst in. "Berryleaf!"
Shimmerpaw turned and looked around the corner at the she-cat. "Berryleaf's out getting herbs, what is it?"
Barkclaw looked over at her with wide eyes. "It's… its Shatteredlake… she's finding it harder to breathe." The warrior fretted.
Shimmerpaw jumped to her paws, grabbing some of the herbs and racing past the she-cat. Her gaze fixated on the elders den as Shortsight was being guided out, pushing past the blind tom into the den.
Inside Shatteredlake was lying on her side, the ancient she-cat's eyes halfway closed and her hindquarters rose and fall as she was heaving breaths. Shimmerpaw stopped abruptly as she sorted through her herbs. "Hold on Shatteredlake, I… I can do this."
"Sh- Shimmerpaw…" the fading black and white she-cat rasped.
Shimmerpaw pressed her paw against the elder's cheek. "Please, save your breath." She meowed as her paw pads tingled, her breathing rising as panic shot through her.
"Little one..."
"I can save you, I just need to… I have to-!"
A white paw touched her jaw, turning her head to gaze into the tired amber gaze. "This isn't something you can stop, this is fate."
"But…"
"I have lived a long life, and I am sorry I couldn't stay… but I think even the stars know it's time for me to come home."
"You promised, you promised you would stay." Shimmerpaw meowed, pressing her forehead to the elder's throat.
A rumbling purr emitted from deep within the elder, as she licked Shimmerpaw's ear tips. "I know love, but I have fulfilled what the stars have asked of me, now it is your time to fulfill yours."
The cold nose of the ancient she-cat pressed into the skull of Shimmerpaw's. "It is time for you to find the other four, it is your time to save our lives… it is time for you to stop him once again."
The she-cat then lay her head back down, and Shimmerpaw shook her side. "No… Please! Don't leave me!"
The warm amber eyes glimmered as Shatteredlake brushed her paw down Shimmerpaw's back. "I have waited for many moons for this moment; now go… stop him for your clanmates… for me."
Then her eyes closed slowly, and Shimmerpaw stood there frozen to the nest.
"No… no, StarClan no… Shatteredlake, don't go!"
But Shatteredlake never opened her eyes, although one last smile remained frozen in time on her face. Shimmerpaw burying her muzzle deeper into the fading black and white pelt, as she kneaded the elder's side with her toes as the warmth slowly faded away.
"Sleep little one, do not wait for long…" Shimmerpaw sobbed.
Do not let time go by, even as hard as it tries
The night has come, the stars are all found
Our light from above
But the Sun will return, and the shadows will burn…"
Shimmerpaw wiped her cheeks with a paw as she continued,
"Sleep little one, I cannot stay for long
My time has passed on by, no matter how hard I tried
The dark has come, I have been found
To join the light up above
The sun will return, and the shadows will burn."
The light from outside disappeared, as the warm bodies of the clan surrounded her. And Shimmerpaw's grief seemed to increase, as one of the warriors brought her crying out of the den. As she curled up into a ball as she saw Barkclaw return into the den. Moonpaw was hesitating as he looked on, before he sat down beside her. It wasn't much, but it was all that he could think to do. every twitch making him jump and his tail lifting off, as he sat there awkwardly. She could feel it somehow, from deep within her soul.
Shimmerpaw could see Berryleaf return to camp, the reddish brown tom was approached by Fallenbreeze. The tom's gaze then went to Shimmerpaw as she adjusted herself, her head still drooped to the ground as Moonpaw remained as close as he dared. Shimmerpaw raised her gaze as Berryleaf took a seat down beside her, the medicine cat whispered apologies into her ear; before he disappeared into the den.
Then a yowl split through the air, and Shimmerpaw's fur stood high on end. Moonpaw jumped back as she jumped up onto her paws, he didn't react to the yowl though.
Berryleaf soon emerged through the den, carrying Shatteredlake's limp body over his shoulders. The wrinkled eyes closed shut, never to open again.
