Swan Song

Chapter 10-Ashes And Dust.

Part Two of the Three Part Handler-Bill goes to fight (and the very worse thing happens) people die. Fleur gives birth as news begins to trickle in about the upcoming battle in England.

Bill breathed in the dust and the air and the blood that seemed to be everywhere. It had been an intense battle from the start. The battle had started from the second he had walked out of the hole at Aberforth's pub into the screaming match that had been his mother and Ginny both of whom had clearly been hiding their pent up emotion for much too long. Bill winced. If his mother and his sister were having the row that they had been building for, for a long time he was hard pressed to see who would be the winner. Nothing would stop Molly from keeping her children safe and yet nothing would stop Ginny from fighting even Bill who would shameless use his position as his youngest sibling's favourite to keep her safe knew that even if they sent Ginny home she would find someway to get herself here. Hell he wouldn't put it past her to try to apparate or even use muggle transport. His sister was in a desperate mood and desperation made people do stupid things. Bill should know.

That had been compounded by Percy who had appeared ready for a fight and for a reconciliation not that he'd had to wait. Hermione who had been watching had distracted the ice cold tension between Percy and the twins by turning to Lupin and asking him if he had a picture of his son. She had cooed over the baby alongside two girls who Bill was pretty sure were called Lavender and Parvati and several first years who were walking past. By the time that Bill was heading upstairs, a sheepish Percy with them and a furious Ginny remaining in the room behind them, Lupin was tucking the photograph back into his pocket looking very pleased with himself.

And then the battle had begun. Bill had been in the grounds with Lupin who had been battling Dolohov with an intense kill unlike anything that Bill had seen. He'd been battling Rabastan Lestrange who while weedier and shorter than his brother had much the same twisted mind and a better skill. Bill had been hard pressed to keep up and most of the students in the grounds were embattled themselves.

It was clear however unlike his brother and his sister in law both of whom were prestigious magical users with no consciousness and had no weaknesses, Rabastan did. His attention was taken by a girl who could be no more than fourteen dancing into his vision (so much for McGonagall getting the younger ones out in time—though if Ginny was any indication there was probably hundreds of students sneaking their way back in determined to do their bit) and Bill took the opportunity to kill. It was the first time he had used the spell and even though it was on a man as dastardly evil as Lestrange the fact that he was dead was still something.

The spell had sent a little trigger up his arm, a flutter that came with the Unforgivable curses that much he knew. It was damaging, it was dangerous, it was almost addictive.

He ducked over another curse and flew a hex towards Dolohov. It hit him and blasted him backwards and Bill hurried over to Lupin who had lost his wand and had been five seconds away from leaving his son without a father. Bill dragged him to his feet and passed him his wand.

"Thanks" Lupin said looking shaken. "That was—"

"Yeah" Bill said clapping him on the shoulder. "Try and stay alive eh? Tonks will dig you up again if you leave her alone with a baby"

Lupin laughed. It seemed strange to be having this conversation in the middle of the courtyard as one of the most ferocious battles in Wizarding history was taking place but here they were doing it. Bill deflected another curse and swore. They were losing the front ground and the Death Eaters were swarming over them.

"How many kids snuck back in?" Lupin asked ducking and hoisting a prone fourth year boy with a broken ankle by the looks of it to his feet.

"Loads" the boy said shortly. "Were Dumbledore's Army. We have to fight. Sides…we've been fighting all year. This is nothing"

Bill highly doubted it because he looked terrified but he understood that a combination of bravado and a high charged adrenaline rush could do to you. He knew what that meant.

"What's your name kid?" he said.

"Archie"

"Archie get back inside and defend the Great Hall. If we lose the grounds then we have to have a safe place to retreat too. Remember stunning spells"

Archie scampered off and Bill rolled his eyes following him with Lupin in tow.

He caught up with Percy duelling Avery with an intensity that was frightening and his father who seemed to be battling with Crabbe Sr and Goyle Sr all at once. Bill watched but Percy had a skill that was almost unmatched by many (and Bill did not know where he had learnt that from) and his father's opponents seemed to be even more stupider than there sons.

Bill ducked again and then launched himself at Nott Snr who was duelling a weakened Seamus who was bleeding heavily from his arm. Nott stumbled backwards but before he could enter the duel there was a shout and he fell on his knees. Apparently some suicidal first year had wacked him around the knees with what looked like a muggle baseball bat. Nott swore scrambling and Bill took the opportunity to stun him. The boy lifted the bat once more and smacked it over Nott's head for good measure.

"Well" he said with a small smile. "I don't know many spells"

There was as blast from the doors as suddenly spiders as huge as houses came into the hall, the boy screamed and Bill pushed him to the side where he crawled under one of the house tables.

If he lived through this Bill thought grimly he was going to kill Hagrid. Breeding spiders this big.

Not even Charlie was that stupid and he had once smuggled an illegal dragon over several international borders.

There was a blast and Bill was blown backwards as hundreds of dementors swarmed in. Everyone screamed even the Death Eaters, Bill wrenched the thin stick of wood which was his only weapon upwards and thought of the one thing that had made him happy.

With a blast the animal came out of his wand. Bill saw what looked like a cat come out and then the dementors were retreating. A weasel had joined standing next to the large catlike thing that he still couldn't see properly. Then there was a basset hound dog next to that weasel and then Bill collapsed to the ground.

He was awakened by the sound of someone screaming.

His father was bent over him sweat covering his brow looking older than he had done in ages. Bill had never seen him look like that and he forced himself to his feet aching.

He noticed that everyone was stood there or in Percy's case sat and he forced himself to his feet before he turned and vomited all down the side of the Great Hall. He did not want to think of what, or more specifically who he had thought about when he had cast the first corporal Patronus of his life nor did he want to think about what shape it was. Thinking of…well…it was a distraction and he did not need that.

He forced to wipe his mouth and saw out of the corner of his eye the kid with the baseball bat looking ill.

"Where are the Death Eaters?" he asked quietly.

"Gone" his father said quietly. "Voldemort called them back, said Harry had an hour to give himself up and if the boy does that then I will personally kill him. But we have some time and we have to get the injured to the Great Hall"

Bill nodded hardly hearing him. Lupin was bent over (if the pink hair was anything to go by) his wife who was bleeding from a duel with Bellatrix but she was alive if the swearing was anything to go by and Bill took a deep breath as he sat down breathing in the air that was thick with the scent of blood and dust and he swore running a hand through his hair and pulling it out of it's loose tie.

His father gripped his shoulder and pulled him into a hug reaching with an arm for Percy who stumbled into the hug as well. Bill pulled apart and saw the boy with the bat sat on the floor his hand over his face. He went and touched his shoulder.

"You ok kid?"

"Finn" he said finally pulling at the Ravenclaw tie around his neck. "My name is Finn"

He had an accent from Birmingham and he was shaking violently.

"Hey Finn. Nicely done"

"Cheers. Oh when my brother's get a hold of me I'm dead."

"You got brothers?"

"Three. None of them are off age and they all came back. And I couldn't go home and not know…so I grabbed my bat and my wand and came back…and I'm dead—" he said flatly.

"FINN" it was a kid of about fourteen who was furious. He reached for Finn in a hug that was genuine but Bill knew was a smokescreen for the frustration and anger and worry he had felt.

"John—get off I'm fine—where's Arthur and Tom?"

Bill let them have their moment and at that exact moment Percy let out a groan sinking to his knees. He didn't appear to be injured but he was crying unable to stop. Bill wondered if it was adrenaline, he was not the only one. The kid John hugging his brother still was almost vibrating and others coming into the Great Hall were in much the same state.

"Percy, son" his father said his voice quiet his hand on his son's shoulder dragging him upwards. "What is it? What happened?"

"I tried Dad" Percy said finally through his tears. "I tried but it was too much. Half of the castle exploded and it just…he just…he's dead Dad"

His father stood up and Bill looked at him through wild eyes. There was something about his expression that made Bill want to leave, want to run away. Want to do anything and everything other than stand here and listen to what Percy was about to say.

"Whose dead Percy" his Dad said and there was something in Arthur Weasley's voice that told Bill he knew what was coming.

"Percy which one of my son's is dead"

Percy looked up at his father and said the words that Bill dreaded to hear.

"Fred" Percy said finally, terribly. "Fred is dead Dad"

And Bill honestly wasn't sure what he did after that.

Whatever anyone said about childbirth being some big magical moment was speaking pure and utter crap.

Fleur had been in agony for the last four hours or so. The baby was coming fast the midwife had told her but the baby was also taking it's damn time as far as she was concerned. Her mother was with her stroking back her blonde hair which had become stuck to her forehead but Fleur found it more of a hindrance rather than a help. She wanted Bill. She was in enough pain regardless of any potions she had drank to know that she wanted him. She desperately wanted him here to tell her that regardless of weather or not he loved her this baby was going to be alright.

She had no idea weather or not she was actually making progress with the birth of her baby but the midwife was optimistic telling her that Fleur was going to be a mother within the hour. It was a short labour apparently, the first one usually took some time to which her mother had laughed and said that Fleur had taken longer than she had ever expected. Fleur had not found that very comforting but she had refrained from shooting her a look and several harsh words because…well it was her mother.

"One more push" the midwife said and Fleur screamed again.

"One more" her mother said quietly. "One more and you will hold that baby in your arms and I swear to you Fleur nothing else will matter"

Fleur screamed and then she felt a slithering feeling and then she heard rather than felt the long weedy cry of a newborn and then she was crying uncontrollably.

"A girl" her mother said as if she was breathing in gold. "A baby girl. Well done Fleur"

Fleur found she didn't care. The baby was passed to her and Fleur looked at her greedily. She was small with a button nose, blue eyes and a tuft of blonde hair and she thought that she was the most perfect baby ever. There was nothing of Bill that she could see but she thought she might have his expression of annoyance when she had woken him up into the early morning.

There was a commotion outside and her mother who had gone to tell her father waiting outside that he was a grandpapa came back in. Something in the set of her mouth told Fleur all she needed to know and she gripped her baby girl tighter.

"What?" she said sharpish.

"War" her mother said after a pause. "It's war in England"

And then suddenly, Fleur was struggling to breathe.

Bill.

So, some people are alive and some people are dead. I had to justify keeping Lupin and Tonks alive by killing Fred so I am sorry (believe me i am still not over Fred!) but i really wanted Teddy to have his mum and dad.

PS. As a Peaky Blinders fan i took some liberty with Finn and his brothers :)

And i just want to say to you all i wish you all a wonderful and happy and safe Christmas and all the same for 2021.

Next Chapter-Part Three of the Three Part Handler-Bill loses a brother, the wizarding world fights back and Fleur names her daughter as a new dawn hits the wizarding community all over the world.
