"Are you able to stay with Joan and the children? I need to go to the hospital," Mary said to Steve.
"I'm going to the hospital, Mary, and you're going to stay with the kids.
"Are you crazy? She certainly doesn't want to see you right now. I'm going to check on her and you stay here with them. Be patient with the children!"
Steve looked at the kids who were still scared. "I can do that, right? I can take care of them."
"Of course you can," Mary answered.
Mary went to the hospital, but Catherine was sedated and Mary talked to the doctor. "She had a nervous breakdown. This happens when we're dealing with such a big stress that the body is temporarily unable to bear it. Has she been experiencing any stressful situation?" The doctor asked Mary.
"Yes, doctor. And I don't know how she hasn't had it before," Mary answered.
"We'll take care of her, she'll be fine. It'll be good for her to sleep a lot. You can go home, we'll keep her sedated at least until tomorrow".
"Okay, doctor. Thank you," Mary answered. She returned home and found Steve sitting on the front porch of the house.
"Aren't you taking care of the kids, Steve?" Mary complained.
"Relax, Mary. They're watching TV with Joan. Debby won't let me near her."
"Why is that?" Mary was ironic.
"Sit here, Mary," Steve asked and indicated the chair next to him.
"Joan has grown up a lot, hasn't she? I remember Joan just a little bit grown up and now she's almost a teenager," Steve said. He ran his hand over his face and sighed, "I even have a dog." He looked at Mary with wet eyes. "I have kids, Mary. And I don't remember them... I regret the way I talked to Catherine, but it's all very confusing."
"I know it's all confusing to you, Steve. But it's never been easy for her either," Mary answered.
"You didn't say how she was doing," Steve told Mary.
"She's sedated and will sleep at least until tomorrow. Her body couldn't handle the accumulated stress."
"I'm sorry she's going through that because of me." Steve paused before to continue. "I have so many questions, Mary. And I know if I asked Danny he'd hide some things from me, he wouldn't tell me things that he thought would make me feel badly. And I know you'll be honest with me."
"I won't know the answer to everything, Steve. Most of your questions only she can answer. But I can try," Mary answered.
"First, why are the kids named after Aunt Deb and Joe?" Steve thought he knew the answer, even though he was afraid to hear what she was already feeling.
"They're dead, my brother, just like our mom."
"They're dead? Doris died? How?" Steve asked.
"Well, you asked me to be honest. Aunt Deb died of cancer and Joe and Doris... they... they were murdered."
"But why?" Steve asked. He let the tears fall.
"Your wife can answer that better than I can. I don't know all the details, Steve. I'd rather not know and you understood that. Doris left me a lot of money and I honestly didn't care where that money came from, and I avoided using it as much as I could, but I used it to help Catherine.
"To help Catherine? Why?" Steve asked.
"Because she went bankrupt by looking for you in various places in the world, by not accepting that you had died. Many times she took Debby with her and was with Joe in her belly. Your ingratitude was a shock to her."
"I'm sorry. I'll apologize to her as soon as she wakes up. I love her, Mary. She just..." Steve took a break again. "She hurt me too much when she left."
"But that was over, Steve. The proof of that is sitting there in the living room watching TV."
"Okay," he replied. "So now it's just me, you, Joan, Catherine, Joe and Debby? Are we the only McGarretts?"
"Yes, we are," Mary answered. She hugged him, and he hugged her too.
"If you're here, and you know everything that happened, and the kids like you, that means you've been more involved with the family," Steve told her.
"Yes, I've been more involved. I would never abandon my nephews, and I like Catherine. And I admire her very much for not giving up on you when I did that myself. Do you forgive me?" Mary told him.
"Of course I forgive you. You're my annoying little sister who used to get in the way of my dates when I was a teenager. You told Mom I kissed Jenny Feldman and she kicked my ass," Steve answered and they laughed.
"You deserved that beating. You pulled the hair out of my doll," Mary answered.
They broke off the hug and Steve started asking more questions as Mary tried to answer them the best way possible.
Inside the house, the phone rang and Debby answered the call. "Hello?
"Debby? It's me, sweetheart, your grandmother."
"Hello, Grandma!" Debby answered.
"Is your mother home, my love?"
"No. Mommy's in the hospital, she got sick," Debby answered.
"What? Who's there with you, Debby?"
"Aunt Mary and Daddy. Daddy had a fight with Mommy and she got sick," Debby cried and Catherine's mom got mad at Steve.
"Take the phone to your father, Debby. He needs to hear some truths."
