"So we met at Watson's Bay?"
"Yes all though.. we don't.. we don't need to go into details as to how"
"What were you my student?" he teased getting a sad look off her "oh…"
"Yep.."
"Huh guess the saying is right, you can't chose who you fall in love with"
"I think Dutchy would disagree with you there"
"He never was one for believing in that sort of stuff"
"You remember Dutchy?" her eyes widened
"And Swain, and Charge even 2Dads"
"Just not me"
"I'm sorry I know that's not what you want to hear"
"You really need to stop apologising"
"Sorry…"
"Ah listen do you need any clothes or…" she changed the subject
"Were we living together?" he looked at her confused
"Oh.. no but we have keys to one another's house" she cleared her throat
"Right…"
"I'm sorry I know this is weird" she shifted to stand
"No… a change of clothes would be nice" he nodded,
"Knock, knock" Swain's voice interrupted
"Swaino!" Mike smiled widely
"Ah… how you feeling Boss?" he stopped next to the bed looking across at Kate in confusion
"Tired, but… sorry what was it?" he looked towards her
"Kate" Swain butted in
"Right, Kate's just been filling me in on a few things"
"I might go get those clothes for you" Kate cleared her throat
"Sure"
"Excuse me" she picked up her bag and rushed out of the room,
"So…"
"Don't start Swain" he shook his head
"You can't just pretend to not know her because you don't want her here"
"Pretending.. you really think I'd let myself forget a beautiful woman like that?" he scoffed
"Then how can you remember me but not her!"
"I don't know!"
"Mike.. Kate she's.."
"What?"
"The two of you were…"
"Close?" he air quoted his fingers
"Mate, she's Pregnant.." Swain looked at him sadly
"Why.. why wouldn't she say anything?"
"I don't know maybe because you don't remember her?"
"I…"
"I just don't understand how someone can forget Kate I mean she's… well she's Kate"
"She does seem pretty extraordinary"
"That's definitely one word used to describe our Kate" Swain laughed softly
"Yeah…" Mike tried to go along with it
"I just don't understand after everything the two of you have been through how you could forget her"
"What exactly have we been through?"
"An oil explosion, a crocodile incident, waiting forever to say I love you…"
"What?"
"Oh um…"
"Exactly how long?" he raised a eyebrow
"Well…"
"Swain?"
"Five.. five years…" he answered nervously
"Five… I waited five years to tell her that I loved her?"
"I don't exactly know the details but from my understanding it's partly why you broke up the first time and why you didn't see each other again until last year"
"Was I really that much of an emotional coward?" he asked
"You Mike Flynn are an emotional coward, Kate's famous words to yours truly" Swain laughed motioning to Mike
"Sounds exactly like something she would say"
"And how do you know that?"
"I.. I just sense it…" he looked at him sadly.
A few days Later:
"Thanks for picking me up, I would have asked Swain, but Hammersley was crash sailed this morning" he placed his keys on the kitchen bench
"It's fine, I was free anyway" she dropped his bag near the laundry
"You didn't have work?" he questioned sitting on a stool
"Oh… no I don't live here"
"What?" he hissed trying to take his sling off
"Um shouldn't you be keeping that on?" she changed the subject
"Doc said I could stretch it"
"Really the doc said you could take your new relocated shoulder out of it's sling?" she raised an eyebrow
"It's fine, see" he moved it around trying to prove her wrong
"Hmm" she hummed when he winced
"Listen you don't need to stay I'm going.. I'm going to be fine"
"And I'd believe that if you weren't currently recovering from so many injuries"
"Go home" he arose to stand
"No"
"Kate, go home"
"So how long you on leave for?" she ignored his begging
"Six weeks, then once I get this cast off I can hopefully go back" he rolled his eyes
"And Commander White is what having you as her personal assistant until then?"
"Well you know what Knocker is like"
"Yes.. yes I do" she laughed taking up his previous seat
"Alright tell me McGregor, if you don't live here where do you live?" he busied himself in the cupboard searching for something to eat
"Adelaide..."
"South Australia?"
"I work at the Navy Barracks there"
"But you used to work in Cairns right?" he pulled out a box of shapes
"On Hammersley it's actually how we…"
"Re-connected?"
"Re-connected" she nodded
"And we were super close?" he placed the box on the bench
"I wouldn't say super, we have fights like most people but…" she looked at him in confusion "What?"
"Do you eat BBQ shapes?" he raised an eyebrow
"No, I prefer Pizza why?"
"Must be why I hid this in there then" he tipped the box upside a ring box falling out onto the bench
"Is that…"
"I don't know…" he swallowed nervously picking up the ring box he slowly opened it to reveal a gold ring band with a blue love heart stone the colour of his eyes,
moving out of her chair Kate stopped next to him to look in the box "It's…"
"A promise ring…" he cleared his throat taking it out he noticed it had an inscription on the inside
"It's beautiful"
"I love you"
"What?" Kate stepped back in surprise
"Oh… the inscription on the ring that's what it says…" he coughed passing it to her
"Right.." their fingers brushing against each other's when she took it
"Can I make you a tea?" he cleared his throat
"I'd love one, white…"
"Two sugars" he finished her sentence surprising himself
"Yeah" she smiled sadly placing the ring back in the box she took one last look at it before closing it.
Walking along the footpath hours later Kate pulled her jacket tighter around her a small smile adorning her face when she spotted Nikki on the park bench waiting for her
"Hot Chocolate, extra marshmallow" she held out the plastic cup
"Thanks" Kate sighed sitting next to her gracefully taking the cup
"So he really brought a ring huh?" Nikki sipped on her own drink
"Yep"
"And he dosen't remember you or there ever been a McFlynn?"
"A what?" Kate laughed
"McFlynn, you know McGregor and Flynn mixed together"
"Sounds like some sort of ice cream you get from Macca's"
"Oh that! No see that's McFlurry very different"
"Sounds similar to me" Kate smirked
"I'm sorry Katie" Nikki nudged her arm
"Hey he didn't even remember it why should it bother me" she shifted placing her cup next to her feet
"But it does"
"He got me a promise ring Nik, and I always doubted his commitment to our relationship but…"
"What?"
"He had that box of shapes when he visited, I noticed it in the car when we went for dinner if he'd had it the whole time why didn't…"
"Are you sure it was the same box?"
"I don't know" Kate sighed shifting back
"Look at it this way, it could be a fresh start for you both" Nikki tried to lighten the situation
"I don't want a fresh start Nikki, I just want the old Mike back"
"But the old Mike is gone Kate"
"I know" she sniffled moving to stand
"Where are you going?"
"I think it's best if I pack up my things and head back to Adelaide"
"Kate…" Nikki arose from the chair
"You said it yourself the old Mike is gone, and I won't force him into something he dosen't remember"
"But what about Peanut?" she pointed to her stomach
"I haven't told him, my Mum was a single parent maybe it's what I'm meant to be as well"
"No…"
"Thanks for putting me up Nik but I have to get back to work by the end of the week so I think it's for the best"
"At least finish your hot chocolate" she picked it up and moved towards Kate "I paid five bucks for it"
"Alright, alright" she smiled softly taking it
"Good" Nikki interlocked her arm with Kate's and maneuvered them towards the beach path
"Nikki…"
"Before you make any drastic choices I just want to enjoy one last day with my best friend"
"How'd I get so lucky to get a best friend like you" Kate shifted kissing the side of Nikki's head
"I love you Katie" Nikki smiled sadly as they continued along the path.

'Laying in bed he smiled widely when a hand moved across his chest and behind his neck
"I love you…" she whispered in his ear,
running his own hands along her naked back he groaned when she moved back opening his eyes he looked up at her jumping in surprise when a blank face was staring back at him
"Mike?" her voice asked
"Who…"
"Mike?" her voice repeated the person moving off his lap and pulling a dressing gown around herself a knocking echoing throughout the house
"I…"
"Mike!" a different voice asked, shifting to move out of bed he fell on the ground'
brushing his hand through his hair Mike looked around the room in confusion
"What the.." he arose to stand
"Mike I know you're here just answer the door"
"Yeah, Yeah I'm coming" he walked up the hall pulling the front door open
"You look like shit" she looked him up and down
"Thanks" he rubbed his hand across his face "what can I do for you Nik?"
"You spoken to Kate today?"
"Not since she left here just before ten" he looked down at his watch
"Good, then we have twelve hours to do some work" she moved past him inside
"Sorry?" he turned following her
"We have twelve hours to rejog your memories of Kate before she leaves"
"She's going back to Adelaide?" he closed the front door and followed Nikki down the hall
"Yep and it's my job as her best friend to fix her broken heart"
"Right…" he looked at her in confusion when she placed a bag on the kitchen bench and started pulling photo albums out
"You ready?" she pulled the last one out
"Do I have a choice?" he sat down on the stool already feeling the incoming headache arising.
