For now, there's a break from the action and it's just gonna be the twins for a while.

Chapter 12: At Sea
(The next day, as the sun shines in the clear sky, Dipper and Mabel sail out into the Indian Ocean on a motorboat with a cuddy over the front and a wide area in the back. Mabel stands at the wheel while Dipper sits on storage bin in the back looking guilty. He holds up his hand and stares at his wedding ring.)
Mabel: Hey, Dipper!
Dipper: Yeah?
Mabel: Land ho!
(He goes up next to her and sees an island with a tall mountain structure in the distance up ahead right where the map told them to go.)
Mabel: (ecstatic) What do you think of that, huh?
Dipper: (softly) That's pretty cool.
Mabel: Take the wheel for a second.
(She steps back and Dipper takes control of the boat. Mabel takes a couple of drinks out of a cooler.)
Mabel: You know, all this running around, surviving by the skin of our teeth... I don't think we've actually take to step back and appreciate... just how far we've come.
(She hands one to him and she holds hers up proudly.)
Mabel: Sic parvis magna.
Dipper: (smiles) Sic parvis magna.
(They clink their bottles and take a sip. Dipper then sighs sadly as he drives the boat towards the island. Mabel puts a hand on his shoulder.)
Mabel: (assuringly) Listen, bro-bro... I know you're feeling bad, but if you ask me, she will get over it when you make it up to her. I mean when we bring back a treasure like that, anyone would.
Dipper: (skeptical) I don't know. I think maybe I've, ah... done this one too many times.
(Soon, they reach the island which is surrounded by several tiny islands. It looks slightly smaller than it seemed from far away.)
Mabel: Huh. Somehow I imagined it... bigger.
Dipper: Yeah, well, we're definitely in the place. I'll find us a spot to set ashore.
Mabel: I mean... at least there's an island, right?
Dipper: At least there's an island. Just keep an eye on anything man-made.
Mabel: Ah-ah... you mean pirate-made.
Dipper: (chuckles) Sure.
(They drift around and search the smaller islands.)
Mabel: So, maybe Libertalia is more of a small beachside shack...
Dipper: Yeah, maybe it's a tree house.
Mabel: Or maybe Avery spent his entire fortune setting up this treasure hunt... and ran out of money to actually build Libertalia.
Dipper: Yeah.
Mabel: (concerned) What if he did run out of money?
Dipper: Then both of us better find a place to hide.
Mabel: (calmly) You know, crazy worldwide treasure hunt aside, Avery had the right idea.
Dipper: What's that?
Mabel: Lived by his own rules. Traveled the world. Made his fortune his way.
Dipper: Sure. Apart from the huge bounty on his head.
Mabel: Come on... it all depends on how his story ends, right? Who knows, maybe in the end it was all worth it.
(She then gets quiet for a moment.)
Mabel: (solemnly) It's a strange feeling. Like we're finally on the verge of something really great and I'm excited and terrified all at once. You have any idea what I'm talking about?
Dipper: I do.
(They spot the mast of an old ship sticking out of the water next to a flat sandy island.)
Mabel: Dipper, over there, it's a ship! Or what's left of one.
(He moors the boat on the island.)
Dipper: Let's check it out.
(They walk across the sand and see the shipwreck in a pit in the water. Various supply containers lay around on the sand next to the it.)
Dipper: Supplies... from an earlier expedition.
(He finds a satchel with an old note inside.)
Mabel: What you got there?
(He reads it and sees it's by a man following clues left by his grandfather to find Avery's treasure. He recognizes the name as Burnes, the same name in then letter that lead them to the prison in Panama all those years ago.)
Dipper: (amazed) Burnes...? Holy crap, Mabel... this was written by Burnes' grandson!
Mabel: Really? That must why the cross in Panama was hollow. He must've found it first and followed the same clues as us.
(They get back in the boat and head to the larger island. While driving between it and a smaller one, Mabel spots a stone tower about a hundred feet high up on a hill on the smaller island.)
Mabel: Dipper, up there!
Dipper: Well, that definitely qualifies as man-made.
Mabel: Ah, ah... pirate-made.
(They park the boat on the beach and head up to the tower. They get to a ledge halfway up the hill where a flat stone surface is on the ground. It looks like it could be opened.)
Dipper: (curious) Huh. It's a door of some kind. Covering a... chamber?
Mabel: A massive chamber... for storing a bunch of treasure?
Dipper: No way. Not with his ego. Wherever Avery put the treasure's gonna be the most elaborate place we've seen yet. And it would be well protected too.
Mabel: That makes sense.
(They get to the top of the hill where the tower is.)
Mabel: Looks like an old lookout tower. Let's see if we can spot something from up there.
(They enter and use their ropes to get up to the top floor. There, they find an image of a circle with an arrow in it carved in the wall.)
Mabel: This looks promising.
Dipper: Huh. Some kind of symbol.
Mabel: Looks like a compass arrow.
(She pushes on it and it sinks into the wall. The part of the wall opens up like a window.)
Dipper: Whoa. How did you know to do that?
Mabel: (smirks) Well, if there's one thing I learned from you... press everything.
(Dipper laughs and they looks out. Down below on the beach near where they left the boat, is a stone circle with the arrow symbol.)
Mabel: Down there. It's the same symbol.
Dipper: Another arrow.
Mabel: Let's go find out where it's pointing, huh? C'mon.
Dipper: Yup.
(They get back to the boat and head in the direction of the arrow. It points to another like it on the shore of the big island.)
Dipper: Another arrow over there.
(They go where that one's pointing and find another in some shallow water.)
Dipper: Looks like it's follow these arrows. Let's see where they go.
(They go in the direction each arrow is pointing around the large island. A dolphin jumps out of the water nearby.)
Mabel: Hey, check it out. A dolphin.
Dipper: Yeah, you've seen dolphins before, right?
Mabel: Well, yeah I have. But many years ago.
Dipper: Well, you'd be happy to know they haven't changed much.
(The arrows guide them to a cave in the back of the island.)
Mabel: Hmm, secret cave entrance.
Dipper: That's a good sign. Here we go.
(He stops the boat under a cliff where another entrance to the cave is. They get out and use their ropes to scale the cliff.)
Mabel: You gotta admit... this is pretty cool.
Dipper: What? Climbing this cliff?
Mabel: (ecstatic) Yes! Climbing this cliff on a giant secret pirate island. I mean, c'mon.
Dipper: Heh. Right.
Mabel: Well I think it's pretty damn cool.
(They get up on the ledge and see the island's interior is a complex landscape of cliffs and caves with plants growing all over them. A large doorway with pillars is carved into a cliff wall.)
Dipper: (intrigued) Wow, Avery wasn't much for subtlety or understatement, was he?
Mabel: Well, he had the money, If you've got it, flaunt it, right? So, does this qualify as "the most elaborate place we've seen yet?"
Dipper: It's up there.
(They go over to the doorway and find some big rocks stuck in it.)
Dipper: (disappointed) Oh, look. The main entrance is blocked by debris... again.
Mabel: Well, I guess Avery's builders clearly didn't take hundreds of years of erosion into account.
Dipper: Clearly.
Mabel: Let's find another way around.
(They go up a small cliff off to the side and through a narrow cave. Some wooden debris blocks their path so they lift it up and get through. They get out of the cave and climb higher.)
Mabel: Jeez... there's lots of lifting and crawling under things, huh?
Dipper: The glamorous life of a treasure hunter.
(The siblings reach a flat grass area with some ruined archways.)
Mabel: What do you suppose this place was?
Dipper: These arches remind me of the Saint Dismas Cathedral... but, uh... I don't know.
(Past the archways is a passage by a cliff between two high ledges. A small bridge connects them above.)
Mabel: Oh, rope bridge up there.
(Dipper finds half a rope ladder hanging from one of the ledges. He crouches down.)
Dipper: C'mon. See what you can find up there.
Mabel: You got it.
(He lifts her and she climbs up the ladder. Then she starts crossing the bridge.)
Dipper: Well?
Mabel: There's a path... but I don't see another way up yet. Hold on.
(As she gets to the end, the bridge suddenly snaps and she jumps to the other side.)
Dipper: Mabel!
Mabel: Whoa!
Dipper: You okay?
Mabel: At least I'm on the other side. Still need to get you up here. Hold tight.
(She runs off and disappears from view.)
Dipper: Mabel? Anything?
(There's no response.)
Dipper: Mabel, hey! You still there?
(He sees most of the broken rope bridge hanging from the first ledge and climbs up it. He doesn't see Mabel anywhere on the other side.)
Dipper: (frustrated) God damn it. Well, let's see here. I ruined my marriage, drove my best friend away, got two psychos and their army after me, and now my sister's gone missing. But on the bright side, there's no one around to tell me I'm an idiot.
(From the ledge, he jumps to the top of the arches and across the cliff wall. As he grabs a wooden beam on the wall close to the other ledge, he sees Mabel pushing a crate to the edge.)
Mabel: (bewildered) You're already up here?
Dipper: Where were you?
Mabel: Finding a way to get you up here.
(She stops pushing the crate.)
Mabel: Guess we won't be needing this. Alright, jump across then.
(He jumps to the ledge and she helps him up.)
Dipper: Thanks.
Mabel: Everything all right?
Dipper: You didn't hear me? I called out to you.
Mabel: Didn't hear you. Why, were you worried?
Dipper: I was worried you got distracted.
Mabel: (scoffs) Oh, I'm distracted now?
Dipper: What's that supposed to mean?
Mabel: Nothing. Shall we?
Dipper: Yeah. Let's.
(He goes over to an archway carved into the cliff and finds another blocked doorway.)
Mabel: That's where I tried to go. There's no way though.
(They get to a cliffside over looking a gorge. Dipper finds a lone tree with a big branch. He gets an idea and wraps his hook around the branch. Then he jumps down from the cliff and swings to the other side. Mabel follows him.)
Mabel: Here I come...
(They land on the cliff across the gorge and proceed through the island. They find another tower leading up to a higher ledge.)
Dipper: Alright, looks like we're still on the right track.
Mabel: How the hell did no one find this?
(They scale the outside of the tower to get up.)
Mabel: So back at the orphanage, did you ever think we'd be doing crazy shit like this?
Dipper: No, I can't say I did.
(They get on the ledge and find a big mudslide going down into a deep pit. They can't see the bottom from where they stand.)
Mabel: (whistles) It's a long drop.
Dipper: Looks like we're heading down.
Mabel: Right behind you.
(They slide down the muddy slope and get on a lower ledge.)
Dipper: Ah... that worked out.
(Below, they see deep wide area with statues above the ground.)
Dipper: (intrigued) That is the second biggest cistern I've ever seen.
Mabel: (puzzled) Wait, where was the biggest?
Dipper: I'll tell you later. Let's get down there.
(He slides down another slope and throws his rope at a statue.)
Dipper: Whooa, whoa!
(The rope latches on and he swings to the ground. Mabel does the same and lands next to him.)
Mabel: (laughs) Alright.
Dipper: You doing okay?
Mabel: Yeah... piece of cake! Look at this place.
(There're some doorways along the side of the round area. The duo go in one and enter some kind of work room.)
Dipper: Wow. What is all this?
(On an easel board is a design of some kind of structure.)
Dipper: Mabel, look.
Mabel: Hey... uh, maybe they were planning a massive theme park?
Dipper: Pirate Land.
(Mabel laughs as Dipper looks at a table with several models of buildings lined up.)
Dipper: Mabel, check out this diorama. It's really well made.
Mabel: Looks like a city street. Think they actually built all this stuff?
Dipper: With these guys, I don't know anymore.
(They find big carved images on the wall. One is of Avery's sigil surrounded by all the other sigils and is labeled, "The Founders".)
Dipper: Look, pirate captain sigils.
Mabel: All gathered around Avery.
(The one next to it is of a group of people with two men standing before them and is labeled, "Our Code".)
Dipper: Avery and Tew... holding court over their captains.
Mabel: It looks like they're writing their code of conduct.
Dipper: Pirate Bill of Rights.
(The last one is of a ship firing upon another ship and is labeled "The First Battle".)
Dipper: It's Avery's Ship...
Mabel: The Fancy.
Dipper: Yeah, attacking the Gunsway.
Mabel: It's how it all started. Dipper, this is the story of the founding of Libertalia.
(They leave the room and enter another doorway in the cistern. Inside is a supply room with lots of items laying around.)
Dipper: Lots of supplies in here. Tools, seeds...
Mabel: Ah, provisions... probably past their sell-by date. So what the hell was this place?
Dipper: A staging ground of some kind.
Mabel: (amazed) Oh, my God, it's where they planned Libertalia...
Dipper: Question still stands... did they actually go through with it?
Mabel: They must have. I mean look at all this. You don't commit your entire life to something just to walk away from it at the end.
Dipper: Yeah, well things don't always go as planned.
(They leave the room and go to a big opening on the other side of the cistern. They find a gate with a large tile in front of it with Avery's sigil on it.)
Mabel: Here we go...
(Dipper stands on the tile and it presses down. The gate starts to open but closes.)
Dipper: Ah, crap. Mechanism's busted or something.
Mabel: (determined) Oh, no, no, no. One way or another we're getting in there. Let's just lift it together, alright?
Dipper: Okay, let's do this.
(They reach down and slowly lift the gate up.)
Dipper: (struggling) Oh God, this is heavy!
Mabel: Just think about all that treasure.
Dipper: Mostly just thinking about my back.
(They get it open and step inside. The gate closes behind them. They find themselves in a massive round chamber with three rings of carved lines along the upper walls and big stone spheres with symbols on the lines. There are also some gears mounted on certain spots along the lines. Hanging from the ceiling is a big lamp shining lights on certain spots on the wall, each in the shape of a symbol.)
Dipper: Whoa...
Mabel: Looks like we've got another trial.
Dipper: It sure looks like it.
(In the center of the chamber is a pirate ship wheel mounted in the floor with a smaller wheel on it.)
Dipper: Let's see that these do.
(He turns the big wheel and the spheres on the bottom line move along the line.)
Mabel: Some impressive engineering here.
Dipper: The symbols on the spheres don't match the ones in the light.
(He turns the small wheel and the gears on the wall rotate. He moves the spheres on the gears and turns the small wheel. The spheres rotate and show different symbols.)
Dipper: Ah, they turn the symbols.
Mabel: That'll help.
(Dipper matches the symbols with the spheres to the ones in the light and moves them into the light.)
Dipper: There we go.
(The lights on the bottom ring turn off and a sound is heard.)
Dipper: What's that?
Mabel: Whoa, look.
(Four statues of people rise out of the floor on one side of the chamber.)
Dipper: Statues.
Mabel: Pirate captains. There's Anne Bonny, Adam Baldridge, Yazid al-Basra, and... I can't remember that guy's name.
(The fourth statue is of the young pirate with the monkey sigil who they couldn't identify back in King's Bay.)
Dipper: So who was this al-Basra character?
Mabel: He was a Mughal, one of the soldiers on the Gunsway.
Dipper: What's he doing teaming up with Avery?
Mabel: Stories have it he was taken to be executed, but he got free during the battle and blew up the Gunsway's gunpowder cache.
Dipper: Oh, so grateful Avery brought along?
Mabel: Exactly.
Dipper: What about that other guy?
Mabel: Heard he started as a nobody, but became a fearsome swordsman.
(The lamp shines lights on the second ring of spheres. Dipper does the same thing and turns the spheres on the gears to get the same symbols in the lights. Then he moves the spheres into the lights.)
Dipper: Got it!
(The lights turn off and four more statues appear around the room.)
Mabel: Here we go again...
Dipper: Who've we got?
Mabel: Let's see... Joseph Farrell, William Mayes, Tanriq bin Malik, and Christopher Condent.
Dipper: Eight out of twelve.
Dipper: That bin Malik guy looks Moorish.
Mabel: That he is.
Dipper: What's he doing so far from the Barbary Coast?
Mabel: Same as us. Coming to where the action is.
(Lights appear on the third and final ring of spheres. This time the spheres rotate as they turn.)
Dipper: Hey, look. The symbols on this ring are constantly rotating.
Mabel: Devious.
Dipper: Okay... gotta track how far off they are when they're in the light.
(He carefully analyzes the path of the symbols and turns them with the gears so they match the lights when they reach them. He soon figures it out.)
Mabel: (laughs) I think you got it!
(He moves the symbols in the lights and they turn off. Three more statues appear.)
Mabel: And the last of our crew... Richard Want, Edward England, and Thomas Tew.
(A part of the wall opens up revealing a side chamber.)
Dipper: Mabel, look. Guess that's where we're going.
Mabel: (confused) Wait a minute. That's only eleven pirates.
Dipper: We're missing our star pirate.
Mabel: Uh-huh, kinda weird.
Dipper: Well, let's see.
(They enter the side chamber where there's a lever in the floor. Dipper pulls it and the floor ascends upward like an elevator.)
Dipper: Okay, where to now?
(They're takes up to a ledge at the top of the cliffs on the large island. From there, they see the smaller island with the tower. A very large statue of a pirate captain comes out of the ground near the tower.)
Dipper: (smiles) There's your missing Avery statue.
Mabel: Wow, so that's what the door over there was covering. You know, I'm starting to get the feeling that our friend was a bit of a narcissist.
Dipper: Ya think?
Mabel: (chuckles) Let's go see what he's got in store for us.
(They move along the ledge to find a way back to the cave where they left their boat.)
Mabel: So, Dipper, be honest with me. How does this stack up compared to your other adventures?
Dipper: Ask me again when we finish.
(They find a long rope connecting the high ledge to a lower one. Dipper uses his hook to slide down it.)
Dipper: (frantically) Don't snap, don't snap, don't snap!
(He reaches the bottom safely.)
Dipper: (relieved) Ha! Didn't snap... sweet.
(Mabel comes down right behind him. They get down off the ledge and find the cave entrance.)
Dipper: Boat's down there.
Mabel: After you, captain.
(They enter the cave and get back in the boat. They drive out of the cave and around the island.)
Mabel: Okay... island with monstrous Avery statue is to the right. (ecstatic) I'm so excited, my hands are literal shaking.
Dipper: Yeah. I know the feeling.
Mabel: Either that, or I need another cigarette. Maybe a little bit of both.
(Dipper moors the boat on the beach of the smaller island. They get out and look up at the statue. It's holding a small telescope but is holding it up at its shoulder instead of its eye.)
Mabel: Looks like he's got a spyglass... but he's not really looking through it.
Dipper: Maybe he wants us to look through it.
Mabel: (smirks) Treasure Island, eat your heart out.
(The siblings get up on the hill with the statue. They're so focused on finding out where to go next that they fail to notice that since they left the island's interior, the sky got covered by dark storm clouds and it started to get windy. They reach the top of the hill where the top of the statue leans against the ledge. Dipper gets behind the statue and crouches down.)
Dipper: Hey, Mabel... C'mon...
Mabel: Oh, no. You do the honors. I insist.
(She crouches down under the statue's shoulder. Dipper gets on his sister and she lifts him up on the shoulder.)
Mabel: Alley-oop!
(On the shoulder, he can look through the statue's telescope.)
Dipper: Alright, Captain. What are we looking at?
(He looks through the spyglass and gets a direct view of a massive island with a mountain in the far distance. Much bigger than the one they're at. He's certain that's where they go.)
Dipper: There.
Mabel: So...? Big, skull-shaped island? What?
(Dipper jumps down from the statue.)
Dipper: No skull. But it is a big island.
Mabel: (excited) That's gotta be it. Libertalia!
Dipper: (unenthused) That's optimistic, considering everything.
(Mabel is annoyed by her brother's lack of enthusiasm.)
Mabel: You know, it is just us here. You're allowed to feel just a little bit of excitement over this.
Dipper: I'll get excited when we get Alcazar's noose off your neck. C'mon.
(He starts to head back to the boat.)
Mabel: (sighs) Okay...
(She stops talking as Dipper turns back to her with curiosity.)
Dipper: What?
Mabel: I said "okay".
Dipper: (sternly) No, no, no. Your "okays" are never just okay. It usually means the opposite of okay. So what is it?
(Mabel's about to answer when she looks off in the distance and gets alerted.)
Mabel: Whoa, whoa...
(They both look out and see several small motorboats approaching the island.)
Dipper: (nervous) Is that our boy Tyrone?
Mabel: Who the hell else?
Dipper: Ah, shit.
(They rush for the boat and immediately take off in the direction of the big island as lightning flashes in the sky and thunder roars overhead. Rain starts to fall heavily as they speed across the water with the Shoreline boats chasing after them.)
Mabel: (urgently) Dipper! They're gaining on us!
(They engage in a fight with the mercenaries as they race towards the island. They wreck a lot of small boats and damage a big one. They proceed towards their destination as fast as they can while the storm rages above them.)
Mabel: Head straight to the island.
(Dipper sees the faint silhouette of the island as they get closer. The attacking boats suddenly back off and the big boat that's now on fire comes out of nowhere from the side and speeds towards them.)
Mabel: (frantically) Watch it, watch it!
Dipper: Oh, shit!
(Before they can get out of the way, the boat rams into their's and capsizes it. They're both thrown off and Dipper's hat flies off his head. He's hits the water and is knocked unconscious. The last thing he hears is Mabel yelling his name.)
Mabel: (horrified) Dipper!
And so, we've reached the point where the prologue takes place. It all makes sense now, doesn't it?
