Chapter 10!
It was now the month of April and the day was the fifth, this month was very special for two reasons. The first reasons was that it was Lorna's birthday in three days time and she would be turning twenty-four, the second reason was she would be able to see Levi the day after her birthday. Erwin had written her a letter and told her the date of their next visit, she was very excited about seeing him again after all of these months.
Lorna was more interested in finding out what Levi had been up to for the last three month, but she knew for a fact that he would tell her to mind her own business. He never liked speaking to Lorna about what happens on the expeditions, but from what she had learnt from him she knew it wasn't pleasant. She also needed to ask him about her family records and how he managed to get hold of them, if he had paid for them she would give him every single coin back. But there was also something else she needed to ask him, there were some pages missing from the book.
Lorna had read the book several times in the last three months, she thought she has made a mistake at first. But when she looked at the page numbers she noticed it skipped parts of the book, after she had examined the spine of the book she noticed there were remains of torn pages. Someone had torn pages from the Faith's family records and she wanted to find out if he had purchased the book in this condition.
Lorna didn't mind the missing pages, but it made her think that something important may have been torn from the records. The pages may have fallen out over the years, but the spine of the book told her a different story. At least the parts about her Father and Mother were documented in the book, it even had the names of their parents in it. But their was nothing about Doctor Jaeger, but this was about the Faith's heritage after all and they wouldn't state siblings down if they weren't of the Faith's bloodline.
Closing the washroom's door behind her Lorna walked into the room, they had closed the Tavern early tonight because of the weather. It was raining heavily and the bar area had gone dead by 10pm, it was an early night for everyone. She sorted out some clean clothes for tomorrow and left them hanging over the back of the chair near the dresser, she would have to wash her dirty clothes in the morning before she started her chores.
Lorna brushed her hair and blew out the candle that was burning on the dresser, she wouldn't need candlelight tonight because the fireplace was lit. It was chilly which was unusual for April, the weather would normally be warming up by now. But it was the month of April showers after all, it was a damp month.
After Lorna had finished getting herself ready for bed she walked over to the room's window, she looked at the many rooftops from her window and watched the rain bouncing off the tiled roofs. She remembered when she first experienced rain, it scared her half to death because it was cold and wet. She sighed to herself with a smile and took hold of the window's wooden shutters, but without any warning she was knocked to the floor by someone entering the room through the window.
Lorna quickly sat up and looked up at the person standing in front of her, she couldn't see their face because the person had their hood up on their cloak. But she recognized the cloak straight away, it had the emblem of Survey Corps on it. She watched has the person pulled their hood back, to her surprise it was Levi. He looked down at Lorna with a blank expression on his face, she had no idea why he was here.
Lorna gave him a smile and titled her head to one side, he looked like he was in one piece still which was a good sign. But her attention was soon drawn to her feet, there was water dripping from his cloak onto them. She wiped the water away from her feet with the sleeve of her nightgown, he was soaked through. It wasn't long under her feet were dry, but then she noticed that there was a puddle of water beneath the window.
Lorna looked up at him, she would have to clean it up before she retire for the night. But without any warning Levi grabbed hold of her arm and yanked her up from the floor, he then made her stand up properly in front of him like an adult would do with a child. She glared at him and shook her arm free from his grip, he then gave her one of his familiar scowls while he crossed his arms.
Lorna looked over her shoulder when she heard footsteps in the corridor outside of the room, she crept over to the door and listened to the footsteps walking passed the room. Whoever was in the corridor had stopped outside of the room's door, she just hope that the person in the corridor hadn't heard her fall. She turned her attention back to Levi and pressed her finger against her lips, she told him to whisper in case anyone was listening at the door. He gave her a slight nod of his head while she removed her finger from her lips, she wrapped her arms around herself and took a few step towards him.
" What are you doing here?!" Lorna whispered. " You're not meant to be here, I could get into a lot of trouble over you being in my room. I mean what if you have been seen by..."
" Lorna, shut up!" Levi interrupted, he covered her mouth up with his hand and spoke quietly to her. " I understand your concerns, but I was unseen by the townsfolk and I plan to stay that way until I leave your room. But remain calm and don't worry, I will be gone soon when I have spoken to you over a matter that has come to my attention."
Lorna pulled his hand away from her mouth, if he only knew the real reason why she was worried. He could have been followed here by an unknown person, she had no idea what Erwin was capable of outside of his office. If Erwin Smith found out that Levi had been in her company outside of their monthly visits, the contract's terms would be broken. But then again she was not the one seeking him out, he was the one seeking her out.
Letting go of his hand Lorna walked over to the fireplace, she was beginning to feel cold because her feet were wet again. She knelt in front of the fireplace and held her hands in front of it to warm herself up, she then looked over at Levi. He was still standing where she had left him, she gave him small smile and told him to come join her in front of the fireplace before he caught a chill.
Levi hesitated before he walked over to the fireplace, he knelt on one of his knees and rested his arm on his other knee. Lorna watched has a few drops of water dripped from his hair onto the floor in front of the fireplace, but then she noticed he was wearing three dimensional maneuver gear. She could never forget those deathtraps, they were the reasons behind why her parents had been arrested by the Military Police all of those years ago. She sighed to herself while she turned around to face him on her knees, she wanted to find out the reason why he was here to see her.
" What do you wanted to speak to me about?" Lorna asked. " I mean it's got to be important because you've come to visit me outside of our monthly visits, you do realize you could have waited until then to speak with me."
" It's more complicated than you realize, I needed to speak with you in private outside of Erwin's office." Levi replied.
" I see, then what's wrong?" Lorna asked.
" Our visits are being documented from some unknown location outside of Erwin's office." Levi replied, he made eye contact with her. " I've come across several journals with each of our visits written down in descriptive detail inside of them, the handwriting is unknown to me. But I've got my suspicions who the culprit may be, this is why I'm asking you to not attend our visit this month."
" But how will I get out of the visit?" Lorna asked. " It's already been arranged by Erwin Smith, I can't just tell the Scout who come to collect me that I have decided not to come with them this month without a reason. I would end up being questioned or dragged to the office by force, the visits are not easy to get out of because we've signed a contract."
" Then fake an illness or your death." Levi said. " I will not be at the office if they force you there."
" Fine, I will think of something before then." Lorna sighed. " But can I ask who do you think is documenting our visits?"
Levi lowered his gaze from Lorna and took something from the inside of his jacket, he then told her he had something for her that may hold a clue to the culprit. He asked Lorna to read through the contents of the envelope and memorize each of the names, he then told her he had to leave now because he had somewhere else to be in this district.
Lorna told him okay while she wrapped her arms around herself again, she then looked over at the bed. But she noticed the book of her family's records was peering from underneath her pillow, she needed to asked Levi about the book. She quickly turned her attention back to Levi and grabbed hold of his arm, she had many questions to ask him before he left.
" Wait, I've got somethings I would like to ask you before you leave." Lorna said. " Was it you who brought the book of records for me about the Faith family's bloodline from the Karanese District's Town Hall? If so I would like to pay you back, I don't want you to be short of money because of me..."
" I paid for nothing." Levi replied.
" Does that mean you've stolen them?" Lorna asked. " Levi, you've got to take them back in case one of the clerks notices that the records are missing! Erwin Smith would also know about the records because I asked him about how I would go about obtaining them. I bet the clerks would also have other methods on knowing what they have in their library archives, do you know what the Military Police do to criminals up here? They hang or torture them or use the firing squad to end their lives cruelly, that's what they did to my parents!"
Levi looked away from Lorna and turned his attention to the window, he then said she shouldn't worry about it. Lorna shook her head at him, she didnt know if they had any methods of looking up family records. She would be the one getting into trouble because she would be documented in the citizen censorship records has a newcomer from the Underground City, she wasn't sure how many Faiths were still alive in the districts.
" Levi, I want you to take those records with you and dispose of them for me!" Lorma said, her grip tightened on his arm. " I will beg if that's what you want me to do, I don't want you or anyone else to get into trouble. I can't afford to lose anymore of my family, I don't want a repeat performance of Isabel and Farlan..."
After a while Levi turned his attention back to Lorna, his gaze soften and he cupped the side of her face with his hand. He told her that no one knew about the records location except for him and her, he reassured her that she would be safe. She gave him a small smile and told him that he should get going now before his garrison realized he was missing. But what he did next caught Lorna off guard, he learned in and gave her a single kiss on her lips.
" What are you doing?" Lorna whispered.
" Shutting you up." Levi said.
Levi leaned in and kissed her once again, his lips were quite soft which surprised her since he was out in all weathers. His kiss was gentle and not rough. She couldn't help but close her eyes while she leaned in closer toward him, she almost knocked him backwards onto the floor. She felt dazed when he pulled his lips away from hers, it felt like she was in the middle of a pleasant dream. He kissed Lorna's forehead and told her to get some sleep, he then told her to remain vigilant until he made contact with her again.
Lorna looked down at her hand when she felt something being slid between her fingers, she saw a white envelope. She looked at Levi and watched him slowly walking towards the window, he told her he had to take his leave now. She gave him a nod of her head while she took a closer look at the envelope, but without any warning he hurried over to the window and jumped from it's ledge.
Lorna hurtied over to the window, she quickly looked down into the street. Levi was nowhere to been seen, he had disappeared into the night. She had no idea which way he had gone, but then her thoughts were interrupted by the feeling of water underneath her feet. She looked down at the floor and saw the puddle of water from earlier, she then closed the window's wooden shutters.
Lorna's thoughts were interrupted again when the smell of burning caught her nose's attention, she quickly looked over her shoulder and saw the envelope Levi had given her. It was dangerously close to the burning wood of the fireplace, it was basically smoking and catching fire. She hurried over to the fireplace and grabbed the envelope without a second thought, she then hit out the burning part of the envelope with her hand which caused her to singe her finger tips.
Some of the envelope had been burnt, she just hoped the damage to the letter wasn't too bad. Lorna carefully opened the envelope while she walked towards the bed, she sat down on it and took several sheets of paper from the envelope. She looked through them and noticed that they were the missing pages from her family's records, but the next problem was some of the names had been burnt away. She was going to struggle reading and memorizing some of the names now, this wasn't good news at all.
