Zim: Happy New Year, my friends! Goodbye to that accursed year and hello to 2021!
Gaz: Yeah! But still, we are going to be close to the end and we'll make sure to have this story end with something grand.
Zim: Indeed, Gaz. But for now, this chapter is all about us coming together and finding closure to what our past has come to no longer haunt us! Now then, let's begin!
Chapter 10: A Start To Recovery
Zim was gulping down some green tea to calm his nerves down and Tak was looking pale as to what she had to hear. After leaving Professor Membrane's job site, Dib offered a ride to Gaz and the others to go back home to the Membrane residence. Before heading there, Zim told Dib to head to Bloaty's to order pizza so Gaz can feel better. They were back home and got themselves comfortable, but Gaz decided to be alone in her room to think about what has happened. Although Zim wanted to comfort her, he decided to give her some space.
While settling down, Dib was informing them on what had transpired inside the Conference Room about what would be a shocking discovery. Zim and Tak were unable to say anything after hearing that both Dib and Gaz Membrane were actually genetic clones of their deceased selves. Zim thought it was a joke, but Dib wasn't kidding when he knew that his own 'father' would hide something so grim and wrong that it was impossible to lash out in any way.
"Wow. That's...That's a lot to take in." Tak said while rubbing her neck. "I'm thinking that you must've felt different in your entire life to realize something like this."
Dib shook his head and replied, "I never even knew I was clone this whole time. I just couldn't believe that he...would straight up hide this from us. His own family. But...I don't know what to believe anymore."
Zim and Tak felt bad for the poor teen as his life became a project that Richard Membrane reviewed on and didn't even tell them until now to explain to them about who they were. It was actually surprising that Dib was taking this all in than Gaz. But Zim thought that he must be distraught deep down and trying to lessen the emotion.
Tak, getting over her shock, decided to comfort him as she placed her hand on his to make sure that he's okay. "Well...I believe that you are still here in this world."
"But...how, Tak?" Dib spoke with an uneasy tone. "I feel like a fraud; a copy of someone I just instantly took their life and-"
"It doesn't matter, Dib." Tak interrupted and making Dib gasp. "To be honest, I was shocked and horrified on how your original self was dead. I was even mad at your father for keeping this secret for so long that it was just wrong to make clones instead of living with the consequences of his own actions. But then...I would wonder what would happen if I ever met the original Dib Membrane."
Dib was feeling disheartened from that response. He must think that Tak would be better off with someone who isn't a clone or someone original. But then, he heard a giggle coming from the female alien.
"But it probably might be the same one that will do the same thing as you. Original or clone, you're still the same Dib Membrane that I would still care for. Besides, you're the only person to accept me for me and I really appreciated that from you." Tak finished with a soft smile.
Upon hearing that, Dib couldn't help but feel a little better from that speech and knew that he couldn't keep questioning himself if he keeps doubting more about his existence. Even if he was a clone, it was like he was living a good life much like the other one.
Slowly, Dib captured Tak's hand and closed as he smiled at the alien teen. "Thanks, Tak."
The girl nodded and replied, "No problem, Dib. Happy to help out."
Zim was glad that the two are understanding the situation and knew it would be a lot to overcome this dark secret that was hidden from the Membrane siblings. But then, Zim got curious to what was going on between the two.
"Hey, Dib? Tak? Just one question." He asked.
Dib and Tak looked at Zim and the older Membrane decided to reply. "Sure, Zim. What is it?"
"Is there something going on between the two of you?" Zim asked with a suspiscious look.
Upon hearing that, Dib and Tak soon blushed red. It was that moment when they knew either Zim or Gaz would ask about their...connection. That timing was something when Tak literally gave it away when calling Dib her honey and holding on to each other's hands.
"Should we tell him?" Dib asked and Tak nodded. "Go ahead."
Tak smiled and looked at Zim to speak. "Things were a little different lately for the past few years…"
Flashback
Planet Dirt was something I never expected to be in after my failed attempt to conquer Earth. It was really stressful when I had to find parts to repair Mimi's software and get her back to normal. I was stranded and running low on so much that I had to find ways to make the place durable until help arrived. Still, it was a lot worse when my ship was gone. Yep. I was in Hell. Luckily, something was dumped near the crash site and found me a flux drive engine to power up what's left of my escape pod. After a few repairs, I was finally out of Planet Dirt and somewhere that I can really rest my feet.
I found myself arriving at Planet Meekrob and thought I could find something to contact the Tallests. Just then, I heard screaming and it was coming from the hills. When I got a little closer, I was surprised to see Tenn there. Right then, she was against a horde of malfunctioned SIR bots and Tenn was freaking out. From one Irken to another, I decided to help her out. An EMP scrambler was all I need to fend off the SIR bots as I blasted each one until they were deactivated. Once it was over, Tenn came up and hugged me with tears of joy. I was confused, but I hugged her back to calm her down.
While I was staying with Tenn, she explained to me that the Tallests were not helping her out with a rescue previously while the SIR bots were out of control. She was unable to get in contact with any Irken fleet as Tenn became pissed at their actions. Leaving her alone to defend herself against other enemies and surviving on her own. But I made a stand with her and helped her with her own mission. Meekrob was taken by us; no help needed by the Tallests as they can stuff it. I, on the other hand, wanted to know what was happening with our leaders.
As it turned out, Operation: Impending Doom IV was in effect as I was with Tenn for a few years until we've ran into Skoodge. His mission became a failure and was banished. Along with me and Tenn. How? We received transmission from Red and Purple and they were surprised and unamused to see us alive. They heard about Meekrob and considered it a 'lame and uninterested' planet to rule under Irk. And due to the fact that Tenn was given malfunctioned robots by them instead of a battle suit, Red told her that she was redeemed useless to let them take her down.
Tenn was hurt and broken to hear that she was banished and the Tallests weren't done as they spotted me and Skoodge. We were banished because I failed for not killing Zim and Skoodge failed because he couldn't conquer a planet long enough for them to rule. They cut me off before I said anything and ended transmission. Ungrateful bastards!
I decided to leave Meekrob and go off on my own to find a new home. Tenn wasn't going to rule the planet alone as Skoodge stayed to keep her company. After our last goodbyes, I got on my ship and left to give the Tallests a piece of my mind. At last, I've reached the Armada. From there, I can confront the leaders and tell them to change their decision to unbanish my friends. But before I would get to them, something passed by me and destroyed one of the fleet ships. Soon after, more lasers were gunning at them one by one and taking out the armada without hesitation!
Zim had his head down to know she meant. His satellite did damage to the armada, yet killed many Irken soldiers in the process.
The carnage was over as the Command ship was left with half the damage than the others. And to think: If I was real close to them, I would really be a dead Irken. I didn't bother to stick around as I left the destruction of the Irken Armada. I know Planet Irk would be a no-go for me, so...I set my coordinates to a new home I'd never thought I be again: Earth.
For my location, I found a nice spot near the woods as I prefer to have peace and quiet. It was perfect and made it better with a huge touch of good culture. While I was exploring my surroundings, I made sure my disguise was on in case any humans ask some questions along the way. It was pleasant and started to learn the customs of Earth's lifestyles. Hell, I even tried to test out this elixir to help rearrange my DNA into a human and combine it with my disguise. Luckily, I found the right female teen and took a sample.
I waited two months for my elixir to work, so I killed some time interacting with humans and learning how to be social with them. And when this month arrived, the elixir was done. But before I would test it out, I decided to check on someone who I truly missed for a long time: Dib.
Paused Flashback
"Wait! You've been here for two months?!" Zim stated. "Why haven't you've contacted me or anyone?"
"I was getting used to Earth and hid my surroundings from the crowd. I didn't want familiar faces to notice me yet, so I just became invisible and used my hologram watch to turn me into any human possible." Tak replied.
"Hmm." Zim placed his hand on his chin to notice something really different about Tak. He was then seeing something that was not on her back. "Um...where's your PAK?"
"Oh. Well, I say I didn't need it anymore since Skoodge and Tenn gave me equations and formulas to make an elixir to alter my DNA." Tak explained. "But...something happened along the way while I was talking to Dib again."
Zim raised an eyebrow. "Like what?"
Dib soon blushed red and decided to answer that. "It was like this…"
Flashback
After a failed attempt to uncover an unknown sighting of Bigfoot, I decided to head home. Assumed to know that Gaz was playing her games, I head to my room to speak to members of the Swollen Eyeball Network. Just then, I got an instant message...from Tak. At first, I thought it was a trick, but it was really her as her alien self. I was shocked to see her without her looking like she wanted to kill me with fury. But instead, Tak was smiling and gave me a wave. I had a SEN member trying to call me, but I hung up and spoke to what Tak wanted.
Soon after we've had a long conversation, Tak and I made sure to chat again if we needed someone to talk to. Once I was done talking to her, the entire SEN council was looking at me with upset looks. Knowing that I lack evidence of no alien life forms and other mysterious things, they've had enough from me and told me I was no longer a part of their organization.
"Ouch, that sucked." Zim winced. "But were you mad?"
I was, but I let it be. During that time, Tak called me again and showed me her cooking skills. I told her what happened and she felt bad that SEN gave up on me and insulted me for the bonus. She felt bad but had a smile on her face to say that she wanted to make me something special. I didn't know what to say except taking her offer. She was smiling happily and told me that she would bake a small cake as an acceptance to new beginnings. It was...great. It was like having a good friend for the first time in years.
I was getting ready for Tak to show up to the house as I wanted to make sure things were great for her arrival. Since Gaz left for unknown reasons, I had the house to myself. Still, I was nervous that Tak would really come up here and talk to me in a real conversation. But I toughen it out and gained some confidence. The doorbell rang and I opened the door to see Tak to arrive. But...it was different as she was...underdressed. Completely underdressed…
Flashback End
Zim was completely shocked and his jaw dropped while staring at the blushing teens. "Wait a minute! Tak...did you-?!"
"No, I swear! That wasn't supposed to happen!" Tak raised her hands in defense as she was blushing more. "See...I took the elixir and it was before I had to get ready to head over to Dib's home. Nothing happened so I went ahead to leave. While I was walking, I started to feel something burning a little and more energetic than I was before. I thought it was the humidity and I didn't notice something glitching my PAK. I was in my little world and...my PAK was no longer connecting to me anymore. Plus...I felt something yanked off of me. I ignored it as I was two houses down to Dib. I made it and rang his doorbell while I was waiting. He opened the door and he suddenly blushed red. I, on the other hand, just carelessly hugged him as he suddenly pulled me inside. And...before I knew it...I was human...and naked. Hehe."
"Sweet jumping chili beans." Zim stated while still shocked. "Although I'm amazed that you are officially human, but I'm surprised you weren't freaking out that you walked down two blocks naked!"
Tak shrugged her shoulders and replied, "Meh, it was nothing. But I was glad Dib got me inside and gave me some clothes to wear while I was getting used to my new altered body."
Dib added, "And after that, we started talking and ate some cake in my room. It was a short visit and we promised to meet again to hang privately. We didn't want anyone knowing us being together yet, but we waited until Tak was registered at Skool. She was approved and she starts Monday."
"That's great!" Zim smiled. "But, Dib, why did you try to sneak inside my base?"
"To be honest, I was actually going to tell you that I want to end this sudden 'battle' we've been having and just start over as friends. Tak already finished her old life as an alien and wanted to start over as a new human. And...Gaz told me a few things about you."
Zim looked down with a sad look and replied, "She told you, huh?"
Dib nodded slowly. "Yeah. You being lied to by your own kind and they exiled you. In my ideals, that was just terrible and they were wrong for that. You and Tak didn't deserve that treatment and they've lost two great soldiers of their own race. Plus: I get to see Tak again and I'm happy to have her by my side."
Tak giggled and said, "Aww, thanks."
"And Zim...I know we've been going at each other's throats for awhile and I hope that we can end this feud and start over again. You and I have had crazy moments and insane battles, but I think we should just end it and...be friends. So, what do you say? Truce?" Dib stated as he extended his hand out.
Zim was surprised by this gesture and never knew that Dib would offer a hand of friendship to the former alien. From this new experience, he knew that him and Dib would just fight for nothing and the two of them would need to end this war on another. It was the fact that Zim and Dib were done and wanted to become friends after everything they've been through.
As a better man, Zim shook Dib's hand and smiled. "Truce."
Tak smiled at this peaceful moment that Zim and Dib are no longer enemies; they have become friends and found closure. 'Hmm. This is nice.' Tak thought.
Once the boys let go of their handshake, Dib's phone was vibrating and quickly picked it up to answer it. He thought it was Professor Membrane to explain more of his actions, but it was a message from Gaz.
Hey. Can u come see me in my room? I wanna talk. Please?
Dib raised an eyebrow to see this message and never thought to have his sister say 'please' to anything or wanting him. It must be urgent and got up from the couch.
"Where are you going, Dib?" Tak asked.
"Gaz wants to talk to me upstairs. Seems like it's important." Dib sighed. "Still...I'm a little nervous. I mean...I cussed her out, shouted at her, and I...never knew that she was going through so much hell in her life. I was just wasting my time doing my things and never paid attention to my own sister and her demons. I don't even know if she wants me as her brother anymore."
At that moment, Zim came up and touched Dib's shoulder and looked him in the eyes. Dib noticed this and paid attention. "Trust me: she does. Gaz's life was pretty sad and tragic to hear. I was lucky enough to see how would go changing herself and open up about her struggles and how she managed to confront her demons without a second thought. I could care less if she was a clone or human, because Gaz is someone who can face the world and pull through. And right now, I think you both need each other at this time. She needs her brother, Dib. Go to her."
Dib listened to Zim's words and he knew that the former alien was right. He was careless to ignore her pain, but now he will correct the mistakes he'd made for 11 years. The older Membrane sibling nodded and went up to see his sister.
Zim sighed and looked at Tak. "Hey, um...there's something I wanted to tell you about. It's about the Armada incident…"
Tak raised an eyebrow to hear what Zim had to say about that. And by the look on his face, it won't be pretty.
Gaz's Bedroom
The goth teen was sitting on the floor while leaning on her bed to listen to music on her radio. During the events for today, Gaz was having many things inside her head to process everything that was utterly chaotic in her life. Knowing the fact that she was a clone of her deceased original, Gaz doesn't know how she will process this...outcome. She never felt so broken, yet she was strong enough to not go down that path again.
But then, she thought about Zim. How will he react to this: Will he leave her? Will he stay by her side to comfort her? Or...will Zim be able to...like a clone like her? Her mind was racing as Gaz shook her head and kept staring at the wall as it was the only thing left to do.
"Playing The Abandoned by Memphis May Fire, I see." Gaz gasped softly as she turned to see her big brother peeking his head through the door. "It's been awhile since I've listened to it."
Still feeling upset, Gaz looked back at the wall and replied, "Never pictured you into listening to songs like this."
Dib shrugged as he came inside her room. "I listen to any songs by random and saved them for when I'm feeling down."
"I see," replied Gaz as she moved her legs to her knees. She continued while placing her head down. "So, how did they take the news?"
Dib sighed as he took a seat next to Gaz. He said, "They took the news well; still shocked about the situation because of you-know-who. But Zim and Tak were understanding and like us for who we are.
Gaz eased herself with relief that Zim still likes her even if she is a clone. But now, she just wants to work things out with her brother since they've been lacking a proper conversation towards another. "Dib?"
"Yes, Gaz?" He answered.
Gaz sighed and replied, "Do you hate me?"
The older brother was surprised to hear this from her, but understood what she meant. "Is it because of what I said back at the place?" Gaz nodded. "Oh."
"I'm sorry for...for everything I've done to you." She spoke sincerely and a bit timid. "For years, I have been a total bitch to everyone in my life. Ever since mom died, my happy side died along with it. I was just...mad...angry...sad. It was so much that I tortured people and kept insulting the. I thought it would make me feel better...but it never did. I felt bad for it. And for hurting you? It was stupid of me to just use you as a punching bag and nearly sent you to the hospital. I was…*Sigh* I needed to change that. And I really got a reality check when I almost killed myself. I'm just tired, Dib. I want to be happy again."
Dib understood what she meant and knew that he wanted nothing more but to be accepted by his peers. But he became a joke to others and felt depressed by their insults. But he found ways over it and did his own ways to better himself since Tak will be helping him out. Just then, he placed his arm around Gaz's shoulders and sighed deeply.
"Same here, sis. Being a paranormal investigator is weird and hectic as I was trying so hard to prove that we are not alone. My life is just a doozy: I never made friends, the Swollen Eyeball Network told me to fuck off as they deleted my membership, and...father hiding grim memories in the closet. I was just done with my life and wanted to just leave the city for good." Dib then smiled and continued. "But Tak came and brightened my day. At first, I thought she wanted to rule the Earth, but she wanted nothing more but to be with me. Knowing that she was an alien, the SEN would have a field day and bring me back. But...I went against it and wanted to see her again."
Gaz looked at her brother in shock. "You didn't turned Tak in?!"
Dib shook his head. "What's the point? They'll think it's a prank and laugh at me again. Anyway, I was against it and took a day with her as we bonded. One thing led to another and we started dating. Although she was an alien, I could care less. I took a break from paranormal and just hung out with her more. And once I was relaxed, I thought to myself that maybe I need to start over and be a better Dib than some loser. I even went to Mom's cemetery to speak to her."
"You went to see Mom?" Gaz asked.
"Yep. I've been telling her what's been going on in the years and deliver flowers to the grave. I thought she would be happy to know how we cared and missed her." Dib stated sincerely.
Gaz wiped her eyes to feel tears coming down. "I didn't know you visit there."
Dib replied, "I wanted to pay her some respect as she wanted us to get along well without fighting one another. Hell, me and Zim buried our hatred and became friends. And...I wanted you and I to be brother and sister again."
"Really? But...after all I've done to you-" Gaz was then interrupted.
"It's fine. You've been through enough as it is and I was glad you didn't take your own life. The moment I heard that, I felt broken inside to think what would life be without you. I didn't want mom to suffer more to one of us seeing her too soon and I would feel like I've failed as a big brother to do anything about it. Gaz, I don't care if you and I are clones. I'm glad we were given a second chance to make a better life. And I promise I will make up all the birthdays I've missed and try harder to do better. You're my little sister, Gaz Membrane, and I love you." Dib stated with a smile and a little tear coming down his eye.
[The Fray - Look After You]
Gaz, however, was speechless and felt her eyes bringing tears to produce. Her heart was beating to know that Dib forgave her and willing to change for the better to get along. They both hugged and started crying and apologizing to one another. Through all the pain, isolation, and dark secrets, the Membrane siblings would find a way to make everything better.
After five minutes of hugging, Dib and Gaz let go and got up from their spot. Gaz was looking around her room and thinking about many times she was stuck there and thinking how it was her safe haven from the world. But then, it wasn't safe anymore due to many things her life had been through and thinking that her father couldn't even bother from coming in to his own home. She wanted to change that as Dib looked at her.
"Hey, Gaz, are you okay?"
"Yeah, it's just...wondering if I'll ever be free from this...nightmare." Gaz stated.
Dib caught on to what she meant and thought that the house was nothing but a prison with emptiness and no joy. He always wanted to find ways to leave, but couldn't find a reason why. "Same here. But...I think it's the time to make our own decisions. To be honest, I was planning to leave this house on Christmas. But…"
Gaz knew what he meant and thought about it. After everything that has happened today, she wanted to be happy again. She wanted to be free and be herself more. And...she wanted to be close to Zim. Taking a deep breath, Gaz asked, "What do you have in mind?"
"Well," Dib replied, "we do have two aliens with advanced technology, right?"
Gaz soon smiled to know what her brother stated and decided to text something to her crush.
The four teens were sitting in the living room enjoying some pizza and drinks while Tak's service bots and Zim's brother were packing up all of Gaz's and Dib's stuff from their rooms. Reason? They decided to leave home and move in with the former aliens. At first, Zim and Tak were surprised to hear this request from Gaz, but they both knew it was actually better than living in a home that felt like prison. Tak summoned her service bots to do the heavy lifting and GIR assisted with folding and stacking clothes and other necessities.
While waiting, Zim was explaining to Dib for what made him change his ways and his deceased sister Nikita. The older Membrane was appalled and shocked that he felt terrible for the former alien to lose a sibling. And he also thanked him for saving Gaz from a suicide attempt.
Everything was packed inside two round orbs and they contain their stuff and automatically set up the things for them in their new rooms. Tak's service bots left and GIR hurried back home to set up everything for Gaz when her and Zim come back home. Before they would leave, Dib placed a note on the table for Richard to read to state that they no longer live in the house anymore. The teens left the house and headed out to the one place to show respect.
Allentown Cemetery
Dib and Gaz were sitting by the tombstone and paying respects to their late mother. Zim and Tak were behind them for support and seeing a heartfelt moment of the siblings. They were bonding again and letting emotions go out to explain the pain they've been through. After they were done, they came up to the former aliens and smiled to know that they were glad to have them as good friends.
After leaving the cemetery, Dib and Tak decided to head back home and see how Dib's room looks like. Gaz gave them both hugs and hoped to see them Monday. "Promise to tell me how you're doing at Tak's home, ok?"
Dib nodded. "I promise, Gaz. I hope Zim treats you well. I still have my doubts, but I trust him than these idiots here."
"You have my word, Dib. Your sister is in good hands with me. Just make sure you do the same with Tak." Zim stated.
Tak giggled and got closer to Dib, making him blush. "I'll be fine with darling here. Let's go, Dib! My show's about to start!"
The former alien girl soon dragged Dib to their home as Gaz shook her head and Zim chuckled. "My brother is weird. But...at least he's happy."
"I agree, Gaz." Zim replied. "So, what do you want to do now?"
"A walk in the park sounds great right now. I've been emotional all day and I need to relax." Gaz answered as she was feeling a bit tired. After letting out her dark past and confronting her father, it drained her completely.
Zim spotted this and smiled softly. "I'll do you one better."
"Hmm," stated Gaz with confusion. But upon that, she saw her friend crouching down and turning his back towards her. Gaz was still confused until Zim answered for her.
"Care for a ride?"
Three seconds later, the goth girl knew what he meant and blushed pink: A piggyback ride. Gaz wanted to refuse, but knew that she was feeling tired and her legs were about to cave from walking all day. She sighed and decided to get on his back. Zim got up on his knees and walked to the park while carrying her there.
"I hope I'm not heavy for you to carry."
"Nah. You're light as a feather. Strong, but light. You go ahead and rest. I'll be fine." Zim spoke softly.
Gaz smiled softly and gave Zim a kiss on his cheek. She started nuzzling on his back and took a quiet nap. Zim chuckled and continued to walk to the park. But what Gaz didn't realize is that Zim has other plans in stored for her.
Membrane Residence
Feeling like a complete and utter mess, Professor Richard Membrane was on his couch to know how he truly messed up with his kids. After they left his job, Richard was alone and feeling so much guilt that he wouldn't find ways to forgive himself for anything. His years wasted for changing the world that he has forgotten that his kids were there and needed him. His love of science was something he should've ignored and knew he had to make up for what he has done.
Once he arrived home, Richard was calling out to his kids to see if they were home. But as he reached to their rooms, he gasped to see nothing in both of them. He was wondering what had happened before he made it back home and search the house for clue. However, he found a note on the fridge and took it to the living room to see what was written. It reads:
Dad,
By the time you got this, IF you ever come home, it's a sign saying that we no longer live here. We're sorry, but we were actually planning on moving out since you never even bother to appear and/or be with us in our lives. We trusted you, we loved you. But your love for your job has been nothing but a distraction to be with your own family. At least Mom was here before she… Anyway, we're just done being broken and alone here since you left us here all alone and didn't even celebrate our birthdays or never showed up at her grave site to pay respects. We're done. Just...done. We're your kids; not experiments. You're our father; not a spectator. We're a family; not a project. Just don't bother finding us. We have our friends let us stay with them for as long as we want. We can take care of ourselves; we've been doing it for more than 10 years. It's better this way and you can do whatever you want now. We just need some space. Just...until we are ready to face you again. Goodbye.
Dib & Gaz
After finishing it, Richard then dropped on the couch and could no longer think of anything now. First Annabelle and now his own kids. Richard, for the first time in his life, covered his face and started to cry in the loss of his true family.
