Chapter X

Questions, Answers, and Friends

True to the doctor's words a nurse had arrived later in the day with, tasteless, soft food, the moment it hit my tongue I gagged my eyes narrowing at the plastic spoon then towards the tray. Slowly I placed the spoon down then looked towards the nurse who stood next to my door arms crossed looking rather bored as she leaned against the wall. Sensing my stare, the nurse looked towards me, a frown on her face matching mine, after a second of staring at each other her eyes drifted towards the tray her frown seeming to deepen.

"I was told to make sure you eat." The nurse said with a huff as she looked back up at me with a pointed look. "You won't get anything that tastes any better I promise you that." She added smirking when she watched me glared down at the tray, I copied her gesture with my arms crossing over my chest, wincing when I pulled my sore muscles. "Can you eat up so I can go deal with others?" The nurse grumbled softly as she pulled out her phone for a second, typed a few things then returned it to her pocket.

All I could do was to point at the chair on the right side of the bed in an attempt to tell the nurse that she might as well take a seat because I was not going to take another bite of this, whatever it is. I hissed in disgust pointing towards the tray like it was poisoned, this caused the nurse to scoff and roll her eyes.

"Whatever I don't get paid enough for this." She grumbled lowly, as she turned ready to walk out of the room, rolling my eyes I looked back towards the tray then towards the drawing that sat next to it. "Who are you?" The Nurse said making my head snap towards the door, my eyes narrowing into a glare at the man that stood in the doorway wearing a tan trench coat that he was reaching into a pulled a wallet out.

"I'm a detective, Naomasa Tsukauchi, here to question the young Sanders." The man stated showing a badge to the nurse she only huffed softly as she backed out of the doorway allowing the detective to enter my room, she then quickly walked out of the room leaving me alone with the detective, who walked to the front of my bed pulling out a pen and a small notepad. "How are you today?" He asked flipping through a couple of pages before finally stopping. He looked up at me expecting an answer but frowned when I didn't answer, making me roll my eyes as I pointed to my neck. "Can you talk?" He questioned, giving out a frustrated huff when I nodded my head. I gave a small smile as I reached forward-moving the food tray to the edge of the table picking up a new piece of paper grabbing the pen I started to write.

I can't really speak, but I can write, am I still a suspect? I wrote then handed the paper to him he read in silence, then looked at me.

"Not anymore, thanks to Mr. Aizawa voguing for you. As did a couple of your classmates, though I think in order to keep this from becoming a major problem, updating your quirk form to apply that you have two quirks might help." He said handing the paperback, with a small smile as he watched light shine in my eyes. "I came here to inform you that a week after you left for Japan your family's farm was attacked, both your parents were killed as was your unborn Sister and your brother is missing." He said seeming to ready himself for me to break out in sobs, but this was something that I already knew. Closing my eyes, I attempted to hold back the tears while a lump formed in my throat, painfully I swallowed the limp in my throat as I grabbed the paper and wrote on it.

Where is my brother? I wrote showing him the paper.

"There is no sign of your brother, I hate to say this, but the local law enforcement called off the search for him." He said with a frown, my shoulders dropped.

Thank you, Detective, for telling me. What will happen to me? I wrote trying my best to not break down. I hadn't fully believed that my family was gone. I wanted to believe that my vision was all just my imagination, but now that I was being told the truth. I pulled my knees against my chest feeling something wet slowly fall on the right side of my face.

"Temporarily you will live with your host family until a casework is assigned to you, then they will decide if your host parents are able to take care of you if not you will be moved to a children's home." He said his frown deepened as he closed his notepad "though if I were you, I would prepare to be moved either way." He added placing the pad in his pocket then turned and started towards the door looking over his shoulder one last time before he left the room.

When he left, I sat in silence reading over the questions I had asked and mull over the answer he had given me. Though it didn't take long for the tears to start flowing down my face, anger rushed through my body placing my hands on the tray I roughly pushed it backward with enough force that it knocked over with a loud bang spilling not only the food tray but the papers. Not wanting to see said papers I crossed my arms over my chest lauded down and faced the window basking in the harsh rain that fell. That's when I started to cry not caring if anyone walked in at the moment, this was really happening to me my world was crashing down and I most likely had no way of going home, the thought alone scared me. Why was the world so cruel? I wondered, noticing that my sight went blurry, eyes starting to sting slightly making me close them the longer they stayed close the hard it was to open them as I drifted off into sleep.

When left to your thoughts in a silent room your ears tend to become more sensitive to the sound around. This was one reason why I liked sleeping with a fan on because it was something my ears could latch to a sound that drowned out all other sounds. But being stuck in this room with the only sound being the rainfall outside and the repetitive beeping of my heart rate from the monitor. I was painfully aware of when the nurse returned, cursing softly under her breath but at that time it sounded like she was shouting, she quickly cleaned up the mess of food that I had made a small ping of guilt racked my body for a second but the soft tapping of the rain against the window pushed me back into a light sleep. I was once again awoken when I could no longer hear the rain, it was my own saving grace from the rest of the hospital. 'Someone please come speak to me.' I cried out in my mind as I stared out the window watching as the dark clouds disappeared into the distance, but no one did. I was left alone to my thoughts which were becoming increasingly dangerous by the second. I didn't know who held the record for the quickest stages of grief but I'm sure that at the moment I was taking home that prize. Closing my eyes tightly I allowed the tears to freely flow down my face once again, at the thought of home. The sound of the door to the hallway opened sending my heart rate skyrocketing, though I didn't move if it was a villain coming to finish me off, I didn't care.

"Mara are you okay?" Izuku voice rang out through the room, I could feel my body relax when I heard his voice. Body tensing for a second, when I saw the light come on. I moved my face into the pillow letting out a soft groan, at the sudden brightness, when my eyes adjusted enough, I shifted ever so slightly rubbing my eyes to the point of seeing stars, pausing when I heard the sound of paper shuffling from the floor. "What happened?" he asked as he set the papers down on the table. Slowly I turned over to look at him with most likely bloodshot watching as Izuku's face morph into one of worry, as he helped me sit up a small grunt of pain pushing past my lips as I pulled the table closer to me and began to write everything that the detective said and showed it to Izuku. Whose eyes widen when tears threaten to fall from his face as he quickly wrapped his arms around my neck pulling me into a hug causing a squeak to escape my lips, I sat frozen before finally hugging Izuku back. "I'm sure my mom wouldn't let anything happen to you." He said trying to reassure me, as he pulled away leaving me to give a small smile.

How is the class? I wrote down showing it to him in hopes of changing the conversation.

"They are doing alright from what I can tell through a couple of us were worried about you everyone says that your screams caused a couple of people to stop fighting. Mr. Aizawa, I think was the most worried, I watched as he tried to cover your body when Nomu went for another attack. Can you believe that even after all of his injuries he was back to teaching the next day, told us that even after the villain's attack we had no time to rest. The UA Sports festival is only two weeks away, so everyone is excited as well as cracking down on their training. It's a requirement that we participate in the Festival, as Pro-Hero's will be there to scout out protentional sidekicks, but I'm sure you won't be doing it because you no longer have a quirk." I stopped listening to Izuku's mutter after that comment, my shoulders dropped as I looked away. "Oh, Mara I'm sorry I didn't mean anything by that." Izuku quickly said catching on to what he had said, rolling my eyes I gave him a small smile.

I'm still going to participate, I am a student of class 1-A, quirk or no quirk. I will be a Hero. My mother once said a hero doesn't need power to save people, if everyone is watching this, then maybe Villains that attacked will too. I want to show them that I will stand back up every time I'm pushed. I wrote rolling back my shoulders to show that I was determined, clenching my free hand into a fist. I watched as Izuku looked from the paper then back to me with a smile across his face.

"Then I will be with you through the entire thing," Izuku said holding his fist up as we both fed off each other's determination. A couple of seconds passed until Izuku placed his yellow bag on an empty part of my bed, pulling out a stack of work. "This was the work you missed out today." He said pulling out another stack of paper causing my eyes to widen. "These are my notes that you can use, I'll bring your bag tomorrow so you…"

"That won't be necessary young man." The doctor's voice called out causing both of us to jump. "Miss Sanders will be released from the hospital tomorrow morning; we would like to make sure that you are fully healed." The doctor said with a small frown as he looked down at his hip "I must go." He said as he turned to tell and walked out of the room, leaving the both of us surprised.

A couple of seconds passed until Izuku turned around, looking at me with a smile on his face making a smile appear upon mine as I grabbed the paper. Can you bring my school uniform and bag tomorrow before you go to school? I wrote showing it to Izuku.

"But you're not fully healed, are you sure?" He asked worry crossing his eyes making me shake my head as I gently patted his shoulders.

I'd rather be in class than on-bed rest. Besides I need to be prepared for the UA Sports Festival, right? I wrote huffing softly as at the fact that if I could talk this conversation would have gone on a lot quicker slowly, I removed my hand my eyes narrowing into a glare towards the nurse that entered with a tray of food. She returned the glare as she set the tray on the table then looked towards Izuku with a frown.

"Make sure she eats." The nurse grumbled lowly as she turned and walked out of the room, we both watched her leave my eyes remained on the door as Izuku looked back towards me.

"What does she mean by that?" Izuku questioned as he looked towards the food then back to me. I looked at Izuku for a second before flipping over the paper I was writing on and started to write.

Because the food here is nasty, I can't wait to get out I want a nice juicy steak. Just like my fa … I paused in my writing thinking back to the barbeques that my father would have, laughing having fun at the time I didn't understand the saying 'you don't know what you have until it's gone.' Yet now, now I understood, and it burned my core with different emotions, but as they settled down only one stayed, burning rage, a rage for those that took everything from me. I let out a small sigh as I turned to look out the window watching the sky then turned to look back at Izuku and finally back towards the paper. We should get to work on the homework. I added watching Izuku raise a brow towards me, but he nodded his head. Grabbing the tray, I set it down on the ground and placed the work that I missed down, opening up the first book and started to get to work until the sun started to set.

Izuku was packing up his books into his yellow bag along with his homework leaving his notes and my work out. "I'll be back tomorrow before school, are you sure you want to do this?" he asked looking up from his task, I nodded my head grabbing a random sheet of paper.

Please don't tell anyone what I told you, about my family. I wrote handing him the paper as he finished putting his notes away. Silently he read the words for what seemed like a couple of times judging by the way his eyes moved back to the beginning of the sentence. When he finished, he looked towards me with a frown and watering eyes, he whipped his eyes with his sleeve then nodded his head.

"I won't but you shouldn't keep that from everyone." He said placing a gentle hand on my shoulder while placing his bag over his shoulder. "I'll see you tomorrow," Izuku said as he turned around and left. When he was out the door, I slowly closed my eyes letting out a deep breath my shoulders relaxed as I stared at the rough blankets that covered my legs, allowing time to pass by. Excitement and worry flooded my body at the thought of returning to school, I would have to work even harder to be a hero.
