"Maura?" Jane called from the foyer. She was freshly showered after practice and was carrying an armful of groceries. Walking into the kitchen she saw her girlfriend dressed in a pair of her sweats and a tight tank top. "Hmmm," Jane dropped the groceries on the counter and wrapped her arms around the blonde's waist. "I should just cancel on Katie," Jane moaned against her girlfriend's neck.
"You will not cancel on Katie," Maura laughed as she turned in the brunette's arms. "Help fill the bowls with snacks."
"I'll fill your bowl with snacks," Jane retorted.
"Ew, gross," Maura giggled. "Never again," she scolded.
"You're right," Jane laughed. "That was bad," she released her girlfriend and poured Katie's favorite snacks into bowls and brought them to the living room as Maura finished dinner. "What's for dinner?"
"Grilled chicken with penne alla vodka," Maura winked at her girlfriend from across the room. "And a green salad with a vinaigrette."
"Sounds healthy," Jane frowned.
"From what I can recall Katie likes healthy," Maura laughed. "You're actually the only one I know that doesn't like healthy meals."
Suddenly, they heard the front door open and a couple of voices causing commotion. Jane looked towards Maura with a confused expression and saw her girlfriend just shrug her shoulders. So Jane took off in the direction of the voices.
"Jane!" Katie laughed as she ran to hug her best friend. "I brought some friends."
Jane looked beyond her best friend and saw the two rookies standing in the foyer looking uncomfortable. "How much have you had to drink?" Katie just giggled. "How much has she had to drink?" Jane looked towards the rookies. "Did she drive?"
"Um…" Sarah started.
"No, she had a couple of lemon drop shots at The Dirty Robber after practice," Brooke laughed. "Then she told us about a sleepover at your house so we figured we'd drop her off, but she insisted we join you," Brooke explained.
"We can totally go though," Sarah ended.
"No, it's fine," Maura smiled as she entered the conversation. "Thank you for bringing her safely."
"No problem Dr. Isles," Brooke smiled and nodded her head.
"It's Maura, please," Maura smiled. "Come in, there's plenty of food," Maura ushered the two rookies into the kitchen and turned to look at Katie and Jane. She saw Jane's worried expression from where she was standing and turned to give them a few moments.
Jane pulled away from the tight hug of her best friend and rested her hands on either side of Katie's face. "What happened after I left?"
"Chris texted me to see if I was home so he could pick up the last of his stuff," Katie let a tear fall. "I didn't want to go home and be alone and I certainly didn't want to let him pick up his stuff," she pulled Jane back into a tight hug.
Jane returned the hug and sighed. This is the worst she has seen Katie after a break up. Usually there's a night full of alcohol, a couple of tears, lots of junk food, and she's good as new. This was going to be harder this time. "What do you need?" Jane whispered. "Maura made a healthy dinner and we have all of your favorite snacks. What else can I do?" Jane felt her friend's arms get tighter around her. The tears her friend was holding in escaped through heaping sobs.
"He…" Katie sobbed. "He didn't…" She tried again.
"I know," Jane rubbed her friend back. "I know he didn't," Jane finished for her. She knew exactly what Katie was trying to say. She pulled away from her best friend and wiped her tears. "Let's just get drunk tonight? Do you want wine or vodka?" Jane laughed.
"Vodka please," Katie leaned into her best friend's touch.
Jane led them towards the kitchen where the rookies were chowing down on Maura's dinner. "My god rookies," Jane laughed. "Slow down there's plenty of food," Jane pushed Katie into the chair beside Brooke and nodded towards Maura to get her a plate.
"It's just so good," Brooke mumbled with a full mouth.
"You guys act like you haven't eaten in weeks," Jane laughed as she grabbed a plate for herself and Maura.
"I've been living off of boxed mac and cheese because I'm the worst cook," Sarah laughed.
"You can't live off of boxed mac and cheese Sarah," Maura reprimanded. "Your diet is a big part of your success as an athlete. Just ask Jane," she laughed.
"I hate this diet," she frowned.
"Don't frown," Maura laughed. "How's your performance on the field?"
"I feel like I have more energy," she sighed in agreement. She hated to admit that Maura was right about this. She hated eating healthy, but her training had improved.
"Then it's settled," Maura started. "We will start cooking lessons," she looked towards the two rookies. "Jane, you too."
"Maur," Jane whined. "Why would I need to learn to cook, when I have you?" Jane pinched her girlfriend's waist. "You're so good at it."
"You flatter me," Maura smiled. "But you need to learn," she decided. Maura pulled her plate from her girlfriend's hand and winked.
Jane watched as her best friend slowly brought a piece of chicken to her mouth. In the amount of time it took Jane to finish her dinner, Katie had only had four bites. She was worried now, Katie had a belly full of alcohol and nothing in her stomach to absorb it. She wasn't eating. "Finish your chicken Kate," Jane encouraged. "No more alcohol until you eat something."
Katie looked at her best friend with pleading eyes. Jane knew exactly what she was feeling. Her emotions were running too high and her body was rejecting food. She didn't want to eat. "You gotta eat babe," Jane pushed. "You can't afford to lose your muscle mass," Jane continued to try to convince Katie to eat.
"Ugh," Katie sighed as she ate another bite of chicken. She ate a little faster this time.
"If you finish your dinner I'll let you have dessert," Maura winked at Katie.
Katie's ears perked up, "what's for dessert?"
"Angela's homemade cannolis," Maura smiled. Everyone loved her cannolis and there was a good reason for it.
"My mom made cannolis?" Jane smiled.
"I called and asked her after you left my office today. I figured we'd need some sugar to top off our evening," Maura smiled. "Speaking of, how's your face?" Maura pulled the brunette's face in her hands and slightly roamed her fingers over the black eye and the stitches above her brow.
"Hurts like a bitch," Jane laughed. "But at least Brooke made it without a scratch."
"Hey, I forgot to thank you for that," Brooke smiled.
"She's suspended for the first game at least," Jane reassured her teammates. "Hopefully, they'll trade her before her suspension is over. She definitely doesn't approve of the gender I'm in a relationship with," Jane laughed. "She's a third string anyway. We can definitely get by without her."
"Yeah," Brooke sighed.
"How's your long distance going?" Jane questioned. Today seemed like a good day to bring it up. Allow for someone else to wallow in their love life besides Katie.
"It's not good," Brooke sighed. "We've both been busy, I mean with two a day practices here I've barely had the energy to pick up the phone. But in two weeks we travel to Houston for a game, and she doesn't want to meet up before or after the game. It seems to me that she's seeing someone and is afraid to tell me."
"We'll figure it out," Sarah patted her friends back.
"Yeah we're here for you," Katie smiled slightly as she forced another bite of chicken. "We've all been through it."
"Hell, my ex broke up with me and it took me thirty days to even realize it," Jane laughed.
"Jane!" Katie laughed.
"Okay, movie time," Jane clapped her hands. "I'll clean up, Katie you get to pick the movie," Jane ushered the four into the living room so she could clean up the dishes.
After putting away the leftovers she quickly made a vodka cranberry for her best friend, a glass of red wine for her girlfriend, two glasses of water for the rookies, and a beer for herself. She gathered the five drinks in her hands and carefully walked towards the living room. "Room service," Jane laughed as she handed off the drinks one by one.
"No vodka cran?" Brooke whined.
"Household rule kid," Jane teased. "Until you're twenty-one no vodka crans."
"But we are twenty-one," Sarah sighed from her position on the floor.
"No alcohol for rookies," Katie jumped in. "More alcohol for me," she held up her empty glass and pointed to it. "I need a refill."
"Dude," Jane sighed. "I'm never going to get to see the movie," she begrudgingly took the empty glass and went to fill it.
Jane returned and plopped down on the couch in between her girlfriend and best friend. Her arm wrapped around Katie's shoulders and her hand resting on Maura's knee. Maura leaned over to cover Jane and Katie with a blanket.
"Pass the Cheetos please," Katie whispered to Brooke who was sitting below her.
As the credits rolled on the second movie, the two rookies were passed out at the foot of the couch covered in blankets that Maura had placed hours ago. Katie was asleep on Jane's shoulder.
"Kate," Jane shrugged to wake her best friend. "Let's get you into bed," she carefully stood so she didn't step on Brooke or Sarah. Jane quietly led a sleepy Katie towards the guest room and tucked her into the queen sized bed.
"Thank you," Katie yawned sleepily.
"I love you," Jane kissed the top of her head as she quietly snuck out.
"We'll the kids are asleep," Jane whispered to her girlfriend who was standing in the middle of the hallway.
"Jane," Maura laughed.
Jane brushed her up Maura's arms and leaned in for a kiss. "We can be quiet," Jane whispered as she backed Maura towards their bedroom. She kissed Maura again, this time with more force as her hands traveled from the blonde's arms to the shadow below her breast's.
"You know very well, we've never been able to be quiet," Maura laughed as she pulled away.
"Maur," Jane whined. "You promised in your office today."
"Technically I promised yesterday," Maura laughed as she checked her watch. "It's one in the morning."
"Maur," Jane whined again. "Please?"
"I'm tired Jane," she sighed. "Can we compromise and say in the morning?"
"You know I can't say no to morning sex," Jane sighed. "We haven't had morning sex in a while," Jane thought back. Morning sex seemed appealing, it was her favorite time of the day. There was no better way to start your day. "Okay," Jane agreed as she stripped off her sweats and sweatshirt, leaving her standing in her underwear and sports bra.
"You can't sleep in that," Maura scolded. "What if someone comes in?"
"We all use the same locker room. I'm pretty sure they've seen it all before," Jane shook her head.
"Fine," Maura stripped off her tank top and sweats. She unhooked her bra and pulled it off.
"What are you doing?" Jane stood shocked.
"They're all women, it's not like they've never seen breasts before," Maura nodded and untucked the comforter on her side of the bed.
"They've never seen your breasts," Jane accused. "Have they?"
"Not mine particularly," Maura laughed as she sat on the side of the bed.
"Maura," Jane sighed. She left her place from beside the bed and walked over to her dresser. She pulled her bottom drawer open and grabbed a couple of t-shirts. She walked back in front of the blonde and held up a shirt. "Up," Jane gestured for Maura to lift her arms above her head. She slipped the shirt over the blondes head and begrudgingly did the same for herself. "Better?"
"Much," Maura nodded as she pulled Jane into the bed on top of her. She leaned up to kiss the brunette. "I love you."
"I love you too," Jane readjusted herself in bed and felt Maura curl up into her side. "Good night."
"Night," Maura sighed into her chest.
