"You brought this case to me, I should have tried harder" Maggie said to Alex who had his hands on the sides of her arms. Maggie had closed herself in the supply closet after informing the parents and Alex had followed her there. She was fighting tears that had been on her eyes ever since her heart stopped on her table.
"What's going on here, Maggie?"
"She should have lived, that's what's going on"
"Is this about Avery?"
"Are you being serious right now, Layla just died on my table and somehow you think this is all about Jackson"
"Then what? What's your deal today because you have been a mess all morning?"
"Nothing, no deal, I have no deal. I'm mad at myself for thinking I could have helped her, I failed her and I also failed her parents" Maggie said trying to push Alex`s hands away but he didn't move with his hands still on the sides of her arms.
"No, you're not, hey, look at me" Maggie lifted her glossy eyes looking at Alex "you're clearly mad at something because in that OR you did everything you could. You were not a mess in there, you were amazing. You tried, you did your best, and we both did. You didn't do this; her heart couldn't handle any more stress so that is not on you"
"They kissed" Maggie blurted out
"No, she kissed him, there is a difference" Alex said fixing Maggie`s jacket and zipping it up
"Who told you" she rolled her eyes "why am I even asking, of course he did"
"He was feeling bad; he just needed someone to talk because you wouldn't talk to him"
"He goes away with a surgeon who has hots for him, they do whatever they do, he immediately gets on a plane and shows up early in the morning wanting to talk. Tell me that`s not guilty behaviour"
"You won`t know unless you talk to him, go home and talk to him okay" Alex said to a now calm Maggie. She walked out, met Meredith in the hallway and walked past her without saying anything.
"Hey Maggie, so I want to introduce Robert to the kids, do you think it`s too soon or what. I mean I want to but I don`t know" she said following her sister "haven't talked to Amelia yet, Bailey sent her to NYC this morning with Link for some patient" Maggie continued walking ignoring her "good talk" Meredith said as Alex caught up with them pulling Meredith aside while Maggie continued walking "What`s her deal? Is this still about Jackson and that trauma surgeon?" Meredith asked Alex
"You know work things, Layla died"
"Oh crap, want to scrub in? I have a liver transplant"
"Sure" Alex responded
...
She walked inside the penthouse and found April, Catherine, Harriet as well as Jackson. He walked towards her and went in for a kiss but Maggie looked away and the kiss fell on her cheek. He took her bag from her while Harriet pulled her leg screaming for her. She lifted her up and gave her a kiss.
"Hey princess, I didn't think I will find you here"
"Thank God you are here, she was refusing to leave without saying goodbye to you" April said to Maggie with a smile.
"Oh I am so sorry, I left in a rush this morning and didn't say good bye" she patted Harriet`s hair "you should have called me. If I had known I would have come earlier. Hey Catherine"
"Maggie" Catherine responded
"I know how hectic it can be, I didn't mind waiting, can we go now sunshine?" April said to her daughter who just nodded her head curling on Maggie`s shoulder. Maggie walked them out to their car with Harriet still in her arms. She congratulated Maggie on her engagement when they were outside and the two hugged saying their goodbyes. She made her way back and found Catherine already on her feet about to leave
"I was also about to head out" Catherine said
"I hope you are not leaving because of me"
"Oh no dear, I need to get home to my husband and I am tired, Boston took all the energy off me"
"Mum" Jackson said giving his mum an eye
"I was also waiting for you" she said with a smile "Maggie, I am so sorry for putting you in an impossible position about Jackson`s father. I promise that it won`t happen again. I was out of line" "Thank you Catherine that really means a lot"
"Oh dear, come here" she pulled her into a hug patting her back and whispered "please forgive my son as well okay. I know he can be difficult sometimes"
Jackson stood watching the two women embracing each other. It was a sight to behold. All the women in his life adored Maggie and only he could mess this up. He watched them chatting while getting lost in his thoughts. He had called his mom over so they could talk about his father. His mum told him, she didn't want him getting hurt because Robert had asked Catherine not to tell him because he had already failed him. She had tried her best to talk him into having at least a conversation with Jackson but he had felt embarrassed to face him in his condition. Jackson apologized to his mum about his behaviour towards her. He was lost in his thought when he heard his mum saying goodbye with Maggie closing the door behind her. She stood for a moment still holding the door without saying a word until Jackson spoke. Jackson had spent the day with Harriet but all day the only thing he could think about was how his conversation with Maggie had gone in the morning. Maggie on the other hand, she had not had a good day, it had started with Jackson showing up unannounced and dropping that bombshell on her to losing a patient who she was looking forward to make medical history with.
"Babe, do you think we can talk?"
"Jackson I am tired" she walked past him towards the kitchen
"I am sorry about Layla, Alex told me things were rough for you today" he was standing leaning on the kitchen counter
"Seems like the two of you have been talking a lot today" she said giving him a look.
"Come on, he was just worried about you" he said softly watching her grab a water bottle in the fridge and then turning to make her way upstairs "Maggie stop, I just- all I want to do is –"
"What? What? What Jackson? What? What do you want?" she turned back towards him putting her bottle on the counter
"I just want to talk to you okay" he was startled by her response
"So now you want to talk? Huh?" she folded her hands in front of him. She was livid
"Maggie that is all I have been saying"
"If she hadn't kissed you, were you going to tell me about how she had a thing for you?"
"What are you, crazy? Of course I would have" Jackson said with a scowled face
"When? When Jackson? You mean this morning because if I remember correctly you said there was nothing to tell. Do you mean maybe the night you met her? When? Hmmm? When Jackson because all I know are the things you haven`t told me? You know what, I don`t think I want to hear this, I think I need to be alone" she said walking away from him but instead he grabbed her arm so she wouldn't move.
"Stop, stop okay? Come on Maggie, this is crazy; don't you see what's happening? Nothing happened with this woman okay. Yes I met her that day; she was all flirty but I wasn't flirting with her, she ran after me when I was leaving and made small talk which I don`t even remember what it was about"
"Was that the only time you saw her"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes because I know for a fact you saw her several times after"
"What? Maggie please-"
"Did you or did you not see her again?"
"Fine, I saw her at a bar near Link`s the second time when I went for a drive after you and April had that fall out and again nothing happened-"
"Oh my god"
"I was waiting for Link and yes she invited me for a drink. I declined and drove back home" Maggie slowly removed her hands from him. This was a lot for her; she started walking away until Jackson spoke "I was wrong. I should've told you the truth from the-"
"You SHOULD have! Why didn't you?" she turned back to him and this time practically screaming
"Because I didn't think it was a big deal in the first place and then I was afraid. How do I say it without looking-?"
"GUILTY? Guilty? We are engaged Jackson. You're supposed to trust me, you let this happen"
"You think I encouraged this?" Jackson was also getting frustrated
"Don't play games with me and don`t give me that innocent bullshit"
"Maggie what is this? I didn't think it was a big deal-"
"Do I ever ask you for anything? I don't ask you for anything. All I ever asked was for you to not keep things from me"
"I told you the truth!"
"NO!"
"I DID!"
"NO, you didn't. You LIED. You lied and you want me to trust you? We are supposed to tell each other everything, no matter how ugly or uncomfortable it might be. I specifically asked you if anything interesting happened that night. What did you tell me? You said nothing only Alex who was trying to set up Link"
"Maggie, you know me"
"No, I don't know you. I don't know you. I at least thought you were the Jackson that told me everything and didn't go around kissing strange women" Jackson knew that this wasn't going anywhere. He figured the more he defended himself the more Maggie got angry. He kept quiet and gazed at her hoping she would cool down. She moved and took a seat on the steps "was that the only times you saw her and please don`t lie to me" he moved and sat next to her
"I ran into her in an elevator on her first day, she made some funny remarks about my eyes. Then yesterday she was crying about her problems with her boyfriend, I swear to you nothing happened, I was just trying to be there for her nothing more and I think she took it wrong, she found me at the bar at the hotel last night, we had some drinks and that's when she kissed me. I am sorry Maggie, I know I should have told you everything but honestly I didn't mention all this because I honestly didn't think it was a big deal until she tried to kiss me"
"So in other words you led her on?" Maggie said in a dangerously questioning calm voice looking at her
"Maybe I did, once again I am sorry but there is nothing between me and this woman, nothing happened I swear to you"
"Funny how you keep saying that"
"Because it's the truth, yes she might want me but I don`t want her, I only want you, I want to marry you and not anyone else" Jackson said softly
"I am beginning to see a trend with you because this is not the first time we are fighting about a woman jumping you, my problem is you hide these things from me and expect me to just roll with it. First it was April, and then there was a Kate who clearly wanted to sleep with you even though you denied it, now Collins. My issue is how you let it go on with women who clearly want to get in your pants while you brush it off as if it's nothing, you turn a blind eye when it's happening" Maggie said
"I know, I get it, I was wrong not to tell you and I am sorry, I really am. I promise that it will never happen again. Can we please not let this come between us? I need you okay, I need us to be okay" Maggie said nothing avoiding his eyes "please look at me Maggie" he said placing his hand on her back rubbing it softly and she lifted her eyes looking at him "we cannot fall apart right now, especially not now. We are so much better together" with those words, she couldn't stay mad at him. She could see it in his eyes, the love he had for her, the fear of losing her was written all over his face.
"I am still mad at you" she said with a little smile of assurance
"I know" he pulled her under his shoulder, embracing her, kissing the top of her head burying his head in her curls. It was as if he was afraid she would change her mind and call everything off.
"You are sleeping in the guest room tonight"
"That`s okay" he wasn't going to protest, at this time he was prepared to take whatever crumbs Maggie gave him. He kissed the top of her head one more time "you're everything to me Maggie and I am sorry about how I treated you in SF. I love you so much and I'm going to do everything in my power to prove it because I can't live without you. I don't want to live without you"
"I love you too Jackson, I love you so much but you need to know that I can live without you, I just don't want to. I don't ever want to" she smiled at him and pulled him in for a kiss.
So who were you with in this fight and why. Was Jackson at fault or was Maggie over-reacting? Your thoughts?
