Mine first -mine last- mine even in the grave!

Louisa May Alcott

Godric was stepping out of the dwelling when she attempted her song again but she rapidly faltered, her glowing eyes falling on his tense form instantly. He revealed his teeth, an animalistic snarl tore from his throat while he stormed in her direction.

Animalistic eyes watched the Fanera release a spooked hiss before she dove under the black waves and Godric pursued with territorial madness painting his vision red with a bloody fog.

He forced his transformation to be instantaneous under the tide. The pain was worse when he rushed but Godric didn't care, running on the adrenaline of bloodlust, his shifting body relaxed for an abrupt moment and he immediately tensed for a fight. His tail swiped under the currents powerfully with anger and his eyes tracked the fleeing figure of the Fanera.

A watery snarl was pulled from his throat and he gave chase into the deeper waters with a lashing tail, he was faster. The hybrid gained distance and just when he reached her fin, she veered around and swiped sharp claws for his face. Lethal talons racked across his cheekbone, turning flesh into ribbons and enabling his blood to stain the waters but the pain of her attack only fueled his rage, and he crashed into her.

Godric teeth tore into her flank and they were twisting around in the water with screeches and snarls. Sharp claws stripped at the flesh of his back and shoulders, leaving burning pain in their wake and it only caused him to bite down harder, tearing chunks of flesh from her thrashing body.

It was her teeth sinking into his gills that had him pulling away with an enraged roar and he wrestled from her grip. They backed off of each other and the undercurrent washed away the thick cloud of blood while they circled with gnashing teeth and bleeding forms.

"You mated with a human!"

She was clicking her tongue with animosity and disgust, swiping at him when he moved too close. Godric dodged her attack but continued to circle the injured Fanera, searching for an opening to destroy her quickly.

"He is mine."

The hybrid clicked back, unconcerned at the glare of her judging eyes.

"Worthless halfbreed, you've disobeyed our laws. I will bring others and they will devour him in front of you!"

Hostility and madness swelled inside his body before erupting into an insane frenzy. He lunged, claws out, and crashed into her anticipating teeth. The Fanera predicted his attack and was deadly with her strikes, she could have possibly killed him if she didn't reveal her throat to his poisonous eyes for an instant.

Godric lunged, tearing into the soft flesh before ripping the front of her throat out with his jaws. Slanted, silver eyes watched the Fanera struggle in his hold, bleeding profusely until she stilled, glossy eyes staring above his head, into nothing.

He released his claws from the corpse and watched her sink into the black void below while a curious, adolescent shark pursued the easy meal with a twist of his fin.

Godric spat the chunk of meat from his mouth and lingered with slow motions that glided his tail back and forth, through the dark waters while his mauled flesh healed gradually.

After the hybrid was restored of all injuries, he patrolled his territory with a searching gaze for any other intruders, not departing the waters until the sun appeared over the horizon and he was comfortable with Callum's safely.

He cleaned the gore that stained his legs from the transformation with ocean water before tiredly making his way back to his slumbering mate. Godric crawled into the loft and collapsed on his belly next to the warm body. Immediately, his exhausted eyelids closed and he was slipping into the void of unconsciousness.

"Godric, stop climbing into the bed soaking wet."

He was roused by the masculine voice of Callum and released grumbles of grouchiness in response, Godric buried his features back into the wet bedding underneath him. It didn't take long for him to drift back under the waking world.

Godric was somewhat aware of a voice huffing before warm lips pressed a kiss against his shoulder, once they pulled away, he dropped back into the dark vapors of sleep.

Godric woke to a dark cottage that glowed with dim firelight and listened to the sound of movement on the ground floor. Blinking sleep away, he changed positions, now resting on his knees, he rubbed the remaining sleep from his eyes with balled fists.

"How adorable."

The voice of his mate remarked from below the loft and Godric dropped his arms, locating the soaking wet man sitting cross-legged in the middle of the cottage, on the stone floor, a toothbrush in his mouth. A plate of fish rested next to him, that he must have caught, cleaned, and cooked on the fire pit outside during the daylight hours before the downpour of rain reached them. It was storming again. It always rained on their island.

Godric climbed out of the loft and stepped over to his mate, who was rising to his feet and handing the blue plastic plate of cooked fish over to the hybrid. Godric had found the plate years ago along with drenched luggage that had the very same toothbrush, located in Callum's mouth. Toothpaste as well. Apparently, humans needed these things to keep their teeth healthy and strong. Godric never had that problem, his teeth were always strong. Powerful and deadly with the strength to keep his mate protected. The green and white brush was still wrapped with paper and plastic much to his mate's pleasure when he searched the bag that Godric had hauled onto the coast of their island years ago.

"Where did you go last night?" Callum was inquiring around the toothbrush while Godric accepted the food. He didn't care for the taste of cooked fish but remained voiceless, not wanting to harm his mate's feelings.

"I patrolled the territory." He answered simply. Callum didn't need to know about the incident with the Fanera. It would only make him worry and there was no need for his mate to be worried. The sea witch was dead and Godric emerged out of the battle as the victor.

Scorching warm knuckles brushed across his cheek and Godric lifted his gaze away from the plate to stare up at his Callum. He made a mistake. Mischievous multicolored eyes were gleaming down at him, the toothbrush was gone from his mouth, held in his free hand that rested by his side. The knuckles were removed from Godric's skin before a hot palm snagged the back of his neck and pulled him into a deep kiss. Godric gagged around the taste of toothpaste while a warm, probing tongue pushed past his slack lips. His grip tightened on the plate of food before it fell and he yanked himself out of Callum's hold, immediately flaring up with a disgusted, savage hiss.

Callum only laughed deeply, not fazed in the slightest at the sight of Godric's hostile form. The human, his human just turned on his heel and bent down slightly to grab the handle of the jug, filled with fresh water, lifting it off of the handcrafted, driftwood table that rested beside the door while the hybrid watched with an irked expression. Godric stewed with irritation while Callum cleaned out his mouth with water and spit out the door, the view of his shoulders, and head covered by the blue tapestry.

Godric waited for his mate to turn his exquisite eyes back to him, and when he did, Godric was prepared.

"Stop doing that!"

"Stop climbing into our bed when you're wet. And not in the good way." Callum shot back with humor, placing his toothbrush and jug of water on the table beside the tube of unpleasant toothpaste. Godric released a hiss, turning his back to the human, sitting down with a huff, and proceeding to eat the food prepared for him.

A hot, rain-soaked torso was pressing against the expanse of his back, the wet fabric of shorts rested against his rear, and hot fingers were digging into his hair. Godric lolled his head back with a moan when his scalp was massaged soothingly. Eventually, he went back to eating when Callum untangled his braid before fingers stroked through his dark strands. He finished his meal, setting the plate down in front of him while fingers weaved his hair back into a long braid. They rested against each other in the speechless dwelling as the malicious storm ranted outside. Callum coughed from behind the hybrid after he completed the braid before tossing the neat plait over Godric shoulder, warm features then buried into the nape of his neck, arms fastened around his waist and pulled him closer against the heated body that rested behind him with tanned legs bent at the knees, lounging against his sides. Godric leaned back into his mate with a relaxed exhale.

And Callum coughed again with a racking gasp, against the back of his neck. Godric stiffened, currently perceiving the impression of fevered skin burning hot against him.

"Callum?" The hybrid was whirling around, facing his mate with concern pulling at his eyebrows. Arms loosened their embrace around his waist but remained encircled around him. A heated hand roamed across the bare skin of his hipbone. "Hmm." His lover hummed, multicolored eyes engaging his with impish fatigue.

"You're ill?"

Callum shrugged his shoulders, "I haven't felt the best for the past few days but it'll pass."

"Are you sure?"

"I'll take the Tylenol that you found for me."

"Tai-luh-naal?" Godric recited with his worried features pulling up into confusion.

"It's a remedy...medication," Callum cooed. "I'm surprised I haven't gotten sick previously, with the amount of time I've been here but then again, I rarely ever became sick in my childhood."

"How many times do humans suffer from this deficiency?"

Distress was rolling the meal in his stomach, making him nauseous.

"Shhh, little love." fingers were reaching up and tracing over his paling expression, the pad of a warm thumb was brushing over his bottom lip. "It's just a cold, it'll go away with time."

"How long?" Godric rasped against fevered skin.

"A few days maybe." Callum pursed his lips in thought before shrugging again.

"Not fast enough!" Godric snapped with stress, pushing the hand away from his face, he reached up and snagged Callum by his neck. Pulling his mate to his lips, he sliced his own tongue with his teeth, spilling his blood before shoving the split muscle into a warm mouth. Callum tensed against him with alarm before relaxing into his embrace and accepting his lifeforce with a pleased grunt.

After his tongue healed, he pulled from the liplock with slanted eyes, immediately examining his mate's muddled expression. "Better?" Godric questioned, hoping his unique blood would fight against the mortal illness. He would not lose Callum to human disease.

Brown eyebrows raised over multicolored eyes and Godric watched Callum swallow the remaining blood that pooled in the back of his mouth, "I think so."

"Good."

It didn't work!

For the first time in his long life, his blood had failed him. Callum became worse, presently residing in the loft for the past seven days, wracked with fever, chills, and coughs while Godric absolutely panicked, reduced to frustrated tears more than once. Disgusted with himself when Callum would lift himself from where he lay and reach for Godric with fevered hands and disheveled hair, muttering soothing words of comfort for the hybrid, who was not strained with an illness like his mate.

His heart ached with unbearable affection when his companion continued to put him before himself.

"You stupid fool." Godric's voice had cracked with sorrowful tenderness. The hybrid dug his fingers into the sweaty hair of his mate and pressed the side of his face into Callum's freckled features. Cheek to cheek with his human while Callum chuckled until it was twisted into rough coughs. Godric trembled even when his mate settled beneath him with fevered hands rubbing at his lower back.

Callum was dying. Though he continued to inform Godric that he wasn't while trembles racked his frame constantly. His Callum felt either hot or cold, never both.

Desperately, the hybrid continued to provide his mate with large amounts of freshwater and sought to make him eat small bites of fruit. When Callum pushed the food away and couldn't be persuaded into consuming anything, Godric became hysterical from the recollections of his mother doing the same before she passed.

He had to do something!

On the final day of waiting for his mate to become better or to depart this life, Godric had slipped into a dangerous type of insanity, and a risky idea formed in his weary mind. Moving the hasty plan into motion, he called to Callum who responded weakly, peering down at him from the loft with heavy eyelids.

Godric motioned for the shaky human to climb down, urgency in his voice had Callum following his order without an argument. When his human was in his reach, he pulled him from the latter and embraced him in his arms.

Situating Callum's pliant body against his chest, he exited the dwelling with hurried steps, bright sunlight blinded his mate and a tanned arm came up to shield dull eyes. "Where are we going?" Callum rasped his question while planting his cheek against Godric's shoulder.

"To get you help."

Godric entered the ocean, instructing Callum to hold his breath before ducking under the waves. His mate did what he asked with eyes closed and the hybrid swam out a distance before allowing the transformation to start. He buried his snarling expression into Callum's neck while striving not to dig sharp claws into the warm flesh against him.

After he stilled, he opened his eyes and lifted his head to confront the pretty stare of his mate. It was wonderful to know that Callum could hold his breath for unnatural periods nowadays. Bonding to Godric had gifted the human with powerful lungs. Callum had timed his breath a while ago and declared that he could hold air in his lungs for thirty-two minutes before needing to breathe.

The hybrid bent his head down and rested his forehead against his mate's gently. A palm was cupping Godric's face and Callum's lips pulled into a smile, under the blue sea, he was otherworldly. Beautiful.

They lingered together in the tranquil world for a short period together before Godric ultimately had to pull away and swim for the destination of the mainland with a sick Callum in his arms.

Later, when Godric pushed fresh air into Callum's lungs, his mate struggled against him. The human unintentionally sucked in saltwater as coughs forcefully made themselves known and Godric swam to the top of the sea, pushing Callum's drowning head above the tide. Large, silver eyes watched his mate spit the water out that had choked him before releasing rough coughs. When his human settled, breathing severely. Godric drifted closer, crowded his mate's space before pulling Callum's frail body against his. Human legs brushed his tail below the water and Godric purred while a forehead settled against his jaw.

They drifted in the massive ocean, resting for a short period while silver eyes assessed the faint shape of a white vessel with his peripheral vision.

Almost there, my heart. Almost there.
