Chapter 13: Christmases When You Were Mine
A/N: I'm so sorry for lack of updates! 2 jobs during a pandemic and trying to live the mom and wife life leaves little time for creativity! I hope to get back to more frequent updates in the new year! This will be a Christmas themed chapter, of course with a bit of a hunt thrown in to the mix. Hope you enjoy xoxo
December 24th, 2:30pm 2009
Dean and Lyanna had gone into town to pick up a few last minute items they needed for Christmas dinner tomorrow night. After everything that had gone down with Lucifer and Jake a few weeks ago Lyanna had talked Dean and Sam into spending a few days over Christmas with Bobby like they had done when they younger, and try to have a traditional holiday break like the rest of the world.
"Why exactly do we need yams?" Dean asked as he watched Lyanna drop a bag of them into the shopping cart
"Because I'm cooking and I like yams for Christmas dinner." Lyanna shrugged, "If you keep whining I'll make you help me all day."
Dean's eyes widened slightly as he shook his head, "My lips are sealed." he said, following Lyanna to the check out.
The pair made their way out of the grocery store and back to the Impala. They had just finished loading the bags into the backseat when Lyanna felt something tug at her coat, she turned quickly and smiled when she saw a little blonde haired girl standing in front of them
"I can't find my Mommy." the girl pouted
Lyanna's eyes flashed with sadness as she looked closer at the girl. Her hair was tied messily with a red bow, and her clothes were a little dirty, "Hi, honey, what's your name?"
"Maya." the girl replied, "I saw her go that way, but she never came back…" she frowned, as she pointed towards the wooded area just outside the town
Dean let out a breath as he leaned into Lyanna, "Call the cops let them help her. We need to get back home." he said
"Dean!" Lyanna scolded, "No, we are going to help her, it's Christmas eve, we can't just leave her alone."
Dean rolled his eyes as he turned to the back of the car and popped the trunk, "Then we're bringing back up." he replied as he subtly grabbed a gun and shoved it into the back of his jeans.
Lyanna took Maya's hand and let the little girl lead the way to where she'd seen her Mother go, all the while asking the girl questions, trying to figure out where and why her Mother had disappeared.
"This is where she went?" Lyanna frowned as the three of them stopped in front of a worn down looking cabin about a mile from town
Maya shrugged, "Can we check inside? Maybe she got hurt?"
Dean grabbed Lyanna's shoulder before she took a step, "I don't think this is a good idea." he said eyeing the cabin with apprehension
"Then it's a good thing you brought back up." Lyanna quipped, shrugging out of his grasp and following Maya inside.
As soon as Dean walked inside they heard the door click. Lyanna turned on her heels and shook the door handle, "It's locked!" she frowned
"Where's the kid?" Dean asked as he looked around the room
"I'm over here! I found my Mom!" Maya's voice called from down the hall.
Lyanna and Dean rushed to the next room both of them frowning when no one was there, Dean grabbed Lyanna's hand and starting dragging her back to the front door, "I told you this was a bad idea." he mumbled, jumping in front of her as a creature approached them
The creature's mouth formed into a toothy grin, "Welcome to my home!" it said, "Mm, you two are going to feed me for months! I can practically taste the bittersweet memories radiating off of you two!"
Lyanna raised an eyebrow, as she recognized the red bow that had been on Maya's head, "You're Maya!"
The creature let out a shrill laugh, "Just one of my forms in order to get my next meal." it replied
"What the hell are you?" Dean snapped
The creatures face fell ever so slightly, "I'm offended." it replied, glancing from Dean to Lyanna, "Neither of you know?" it sighed, "I am a Kramcibatio!" it laughed, "We are rather rare…"
Lyanna shifted her feet and hid herself behind Dean, "Distract it, so I can text Sam!" she whispered
Dean cleared his throat, "Okay, so what's your next move… you lured us out here? So what now you're going to eat us?" he asked
Kramcibatio shook his head and let out a chuckle, "Now where's the poetry in that? No, I don't quite eat that way… I feed, but it's a… particular diet, you see, I need intertwined Christmas memories, lovers are the strongest, but really any two people with a bond will work."
At this Lyanna and Dean both share a look and let out a laugh, "Then you're out of luck, bub." Lyanna snorted, "We just work together." she lied
Kramcibatio took a step towards them, "I don't like liars. And I know that's what you are doing cause I can see your memories with this man. Does he know you've loved him since you were 15? After that night at the ice skating rink?"
Lyanna felt her face flush as Dean's eyes landed on her, "Skating rink? I don't reme-" his voice waivers as bits and pieces of the past come back to him, then he turns on the demon, "Alright, I'm kind of over the small talk." he growled as he pulled the gun from his jeans, "Whatever you are this should at least slow you down long enough for me to gank you."
But before Dean can pull the trigger the Kramcibatio advanced on them and jabbed both of them with a pointed bone that is sticking out of it's wrists, "Sweet dreams my lovebirds."
December 23rd 4:45pm 1998
"Bye Baby! I'll see you in a few days! I love you and Merry Christmas!" Vanessa Summers called from the drivers side door as Lyanna slipped out of the passenger seat with her suitcase, "Bye Mom. Be safe and don't forget to call!"
Lyanna sighed softly as she watched her Mother's car pull out of Bobby's driveway
"Get your butt in here, Lya! Before you catch your death!" Bobby's voice boomed from the front door.
Lyanna slowly walked up the front steps, "Hi, Bobby, Merry Christmas." she said as she shuffled her way inside
"Merry Christmas, Lyanna." Bobby nods, "Hey I got a surprise for yah." he smiled, leading the small girl into the study
Lyanna's face lights up as she recoginizes the two boys sitting on the couch, "Sam! Dean! Merry Christmas!"
Sam grinned as he got to his feet, "Merry Christmas, Lya." he said
"Hiya, Princess." Dean smirked "Your Mom dump you off here to go off on a hunt?"
Lyanna's smile falters, "I'm just not old enough to go with her yet." she countered, "Why are you here? Nineteen's plenty old enough to go hunting, unless John thinks you can't handle it.." she snapped
"I'm here looking out for Sammy." Dean replied glaring at the younger girl
"All right, enough!" Bobby groaned, "I'm not having the two of you at each other's throats all weekend." he said, "Apologize so we can get this holiday over with huh?"
"Sorry."
"I'm sorry."
"Good, now why don't we watch a Christmas movie and have some popcorn?" Bobby suggested
"What about dinner?" Lyanna frowned
Sam and Dean share a look and grin at each other, "Welcome to your first hunter's Christmas, Lya." Sam laughed, "We don't play by the books, you know that." he added, slinging an arm over her shoulder as they walked into the living room.
Christmas Eve, 5:34pm, 2009
"Lya.." Dean whispered, "Hey, Buff, you gotta wake up.." he said, nudging her with his foot
"Dean?" Lyanna frowned as she opened her eyes, "Why can't I move?..."
"Pyscho Christmas demon tranq'd us!" Dean replied his voice hoarse, "A little light bondage too." he added, nodding his head to where their palms had been cut and their hands tied together
"Yes, unfortunately that's the best way to share the memories between humans." Kramcibatio smirked as it stepped into the light, "Good news though, you won't live long enough to worry about the scars it'll leave."
"We have people coming for us." Dean replied, "Hunters. They'll figure out how to kill you."
Kramcibatio merely shrugged, "Won't matter. Once I inject my venom into you, you'll have hours before you're trapped in your Christmas memories forever." it said, walking over to them and stabbing them once again with the boney pointer, "Thanks for the memories." it laughed before walking out of the room.
Dean glanced at Lyanna, "It'll be okay. You messaged Sam right?" he asked
Lyanna gives a small nod, "But I only got as far as what had us and what it looked like… I hope it was enough for them to figure it out.." she replied, her voice growing small and wispy, "Shit, see you on the other side, Dean." she said with a half smile before the world around them faded out to black.
Christmas morning, 1998
"Look guys I know it ain't much but, well, your parents kind of sprung this on me last minute…" Bobby rambled as he handed the three kids their gifts. To his surprise each kid seemed genuinely happy with what they got
"Okay, my turn!" Lyanna smiled as she pulled out three presents wrapped in old newspaper, "Sorry about the wrapping."
Lyanna bit her lip as she watched the three people she cared about open their gifts. She didn't have any money, nor did she know Sam and Dean would be here until after she arrived so she improvised with what she had. For Bobby she'd made a small blade, she had known she was coming to Bobby's so she had time to make his gift. As for Sam she gave him her old first edition copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, and for Dean, a homemade gift certificate that he could redeem for any 3 types of pies, cakes, or cookies. She knew they weren't the best gifts but it was all she could do with minimal notice
Dean let out a chuckle as he eye'd the gift certificate, "Does this expire?" he asked, "And can I cash one in now?"
Lyanna grinned a bit, "Good for one year, and yes." she nodded, "What would you like Mr. Winchester?" she laughed
"Apple Pie." Dean replied, rolling his eyes, "Obviously." he teased
"Obviously." Lyanna nodded
Christmas Eve, 6:12pm
"I found something!" Sam called as he stood up to walk over to Bobby, "Kramcibatio, only active for 3 weeks out of the year with their final feed being Decemember 24. Christmas Eve. Afterwards they will hibernate for the next 49 weeks living off the memories they collected prior…"
"Does it say anything about how to kill it?" Bobby huffed, "We're running out of time here, Sam, for all we know Lya and Dean could already be dead!"
Demember 22nd 3:56pm 2000
Lyanna was sitting on Bobby's front steps watching the highway. He had come out about fifteen minutes ago with a blanket and some hot chocolate. She was waiting for the Winchesters, John had called two days ago to let Bobby know that he needed to drop the boys off over Christmas again. As much as Lyanna missed her Mom over the holidays she was glad she had her other family to spend it with.
John Winchester said his goodbyes to the boys and honked the horn before leaving for the week. Dean watched as the Impala faded out of view and he took a deep breath, he really wanted to go with his Dad this time, but apparently Sam still needed to be watched over.
"Heya, Buffy." Dean smiled as he noticed the small blonde wrapped up in a blanket on the front porch, "Waiting for Santa?"
Lyanna let out a laugh, "Waitin' for you two." she said, "Your Dad said, 3:30."
"We ran into some unexpected trouble." Sam shrugged, "Let's go inside and we'll fill yah in.." he smiled, helping Lyanna to her feet and following Dean into the house.
After everyone got caught up and had a pizza dinner the three younger hunters were doing their traditional camp out in Bobby's living room and watching cheesy Christmas movies in the dark. Dean went to the kitchen and returned a few minutes later with three beers, "Merry Christmas kids." he grinned
"I'm not a kid." Lyanna scoffed, "I have a boyfriend now." she beamed "His name is Liam."
Dean rolled his eyes, "Which Backstreet Boy is that?" he laughed
Lyanna frowned and crossed her arms over her chest, "He's real. He goes to the local highschool, and he has a car." she smirked, "He just turned 17."
Sam glanced at Dean who looked a bit pissed, and then turned to Lya, "You'll have to introduce us over the holiday." he smiled
Lyanna nodded, "We have an ice skating date on Christmas eve, you guys could join us…" she suggested, looking between the brothers
Christmas Eve, 12:46pm, 2000
Lyanna flopped down on the couch next to Sam, "Liam had to cancel our date." she pouted, "Some family drama."
Sam shrugged, "So, we can still all go." he said, "No need to mope around the house over a boy." he grinned
"I'm not moping." Lyanna replied, "Fine, I guess you two can be my back up dates." she teased.
It was a few hours later and Sam, Dean and Lyanna were on their way down the ice skating rink, "After we can get hot chocolate and people watch." Lyanna babbled, she was still feeling down about Liam breaking their date, so she was trying to distract herself by constantly talking, just so she wouldn't hear her own doubting thoughts
"Are you ever gonna shut up?" Dean snapped, "Man, you've been a motormouth since this afternoon." he laughed
"Sorry, I'm just happy that I get to hang out with you guys, you know, outside of Bobby's house." Lyanna smiled.
The three of them paid for their skates and then made their way down to the rink, stopping at the benches to change their boots. Dean and Sam made it out to the ice faster than Lyanna and were making fun of a couple who were in a very public display of affection in the middle of the rink
"What are you guys laughing at?" Lyanna asked as she joined the brothers
Dean smirked and pointied to the couple who had just come up for air, "Oh they decided to breath."
Lyanna's smile quickly vanished from her face when she recognized the blonde boy twenty feet away from them, she frowned as she pushed past Dean and Sam and skated towards the couple, "Liam?!" she shouted, "This was your family emergency?"
Liam frowned as he realized he'd been caught, "It-It's not what it looks like…" he stammered
"Oh so you weren't just sucking some skanks face off?"
"Lyanna, calm down.." Liam snapped, "You're causing a scene.."
"Good!" Lyanna yelled, "You're a jerk! How could you do this, on Christmas eve?" she frowned, crossing her arms over her chest
"Lya, everything okay?" Sam asked as he skated up to her, "What's going on?"
"Who's this Lyanna?" Liam asked glaring at Sam, "Looks like you're-"
"Sam is my friend, he's staying at my uncles with his brother for the holidays." Lyanna snapped, "Don't you dare turn this around on me! Ugh, you're such a-a-an asshat!" she stammered as she skated off the ice, with Liam following after her
Sam made his way back to where Dean had been watching, "Lovers spat." he chuckled
Dean narrowed his eyes, "Dude was cheating on her, and now look at him." he said, motioning to where Liam was sitting beside Lyanna clearly trying to sweet talk his way back into her good graces
"Yeah, he's taking a page outta your book." Sam laughed, nudging Dean, "Oh come on, Lya's smart she won't take him back.." he shrugged
Dean shook his head, "I hope you're right…" he started, then he frowned, "Where'd they go?" he asked, noticing the bench they'd been sitting on was empty now
After about twenty minutes of skating around and asking people if they'd seen Liam or Lyanna they got a tip from an awkward looking boy with bottle cap glasses. He said he'd seen Liam dragging Lyanna to one of the utility sheds behind the rinks.
"Dean.. Dean!" Sam called, "You can't just go in there like a protective older brother, what if they're making up.." he sighed
Dean gave Sam a look, "Lyanna was pissed no way is she taking the loser back, not unless he does some major ass kissing." he scoffed
The brothers approached the seemingly empty building, almost as if they were hunting a monster, they were quiet and and on edge
"Liam, no!" Lyanna's muffled voice filtered through the air, "Please, no… Liam-I-I don't want too.." she cried
"If you loved me you would, otherwise what do you expect me to do, why do you think I was out here with Missy… she puts out.."
"Get your god damn hands off of her!" Dean shouted as he pushed the door open, "Pretty sure she said no."
Liam shifted off of Lyanna and pulled his shirt back on, "Hey, dude, why don't you mind your own business…" he scoffed, "She's my girlfriend, and she likes it when I'm rough." he smirked, glancing at Lyanna who was trying to button up her pants and pull on her sweater
Dean grunted as he pushed Liam out of the way and helped Lyanna to her feet, "Sam, get her outta her. Take her back to Bobby's and make sure she's okay." Dean said, his voice low and dangerous
Sam opened his mouth to say something but he thought better of it, "Okay." he said as he wrapped an arm around Lyanna who was trying to stifle the sobs coming out of her mouth.
Once Dean was sure they were gone he turned back to Liam, "How many other girls you pulled this shit on?" he asked
Liam rolled his eyes, "It's none of your business… plus you know how girls are no never really mean no, come on, man, you know that."
Dean scoffed and shook his head, "Yeah I guess you're right." he shrugged then he cocked his arm back and punched Liam right in the face, continuing to beat on him
"Man, c'mon! Stop, I'm sorry, no, please..." Liam cried, as Dean continued to pummel him
Dean gave Liam a smirk as he stopped momentarily "No never really means no, come on, man, you know that.." he repeated, as he nearly beat the kid to death.
Dean didn't leave the rink that night until Liam promised never to go near Lyanna or any other girl again, and before he went back to Bobby's he stopped at a gas'n'sip bathroom to rinse the blood from his clothes and hands, the last thing he needed was Lyanna seeing him covered in someone else's blood, he was pretty sure she'd be just as mad at him as she'd been at Liam. But he couldn't stand by and let some little punk try and pull something like that on her.
He made it home that night a few hours later and Bobby stopped him when he walked in the door, "You didn't do anything stupid did yah?" he asked
Dean glanced at the ground then back at Bobby, "I took care of her." he replied, "He-he was gonna…"
"I know Sam told me."
"Then you know what I had to do." Dean sighed, "Is she still up?"
Bobby nodded, "She was waiting for both her boys to be home. She wants you guys to sleep in her room tonight." he sighed
Dean nodded, "Night, Bobby." he said as he made his way up the stairs.
Dean took a breath and tapped on the door, pushing it open after a minute, "You two should be sleeping." he grinned
Lyanna let out a tired laugh, "We were waiting for you." she said, patting the spot on the other side of her
Sam glanced at Dean, who just nodded, "Alright, Lya I'm gonna go get you some water, but you really gotta get some sleep. Dean'll stay with you."
Lyanna nodded as she yawned and leaned back into her pillow, "I-I wouldn't have let hi-"
"Lya just go to sleep huh?" Dean said with a small smile, "You can make it up to me by baking me a pie tomorrow." he added with a laugh
"Okay. Deal." Lyanna nodded, "Thanks Dean." she whispered as she tucked the blankets under her chin and closed her eyes
Christmas Eve 7pm 2009
Bobby and Sam made their way to the last place Lyanna's phone had given out a signal. About 10 minutes later they spotted the cabin, "That's gotta be where they are." Bobby whispered as they approached the house.
They had figured out that the only thing that would stop the Kramcibatio was it's own boney pointer, that had to be broken off and stabbed into the back of it's neck, so they decided Bobby would lure the demon out and Sam would work on getting the pointer.
Once they got into the house it was oddly quiet and they made their way to the back room where Lyanna and Dean were unconscious and tied together on the floor, both of them looking pale and gaunt, "I don't think we have a lot of time, Sam!" Bobby yell whispered, "We gotta find this thing!"
December 31st 2003
Lyanna was pacing her room at Bobby's, it was 3:35am and about 2 hours ago she had received a phone call from John Winchester, it wasn't so much a phone call as it was a warning. Something was out to get Vanessa, and her, and because of Dean's attachment to Lyanna, whatever it was wanted Dean dead too. And John couldn't have that, so he told Lyanna if she loved Dean and wanted to protect him, she needed to run, and make sure that Dean wouldn't go looking for her.
Lyanna grabbed an old suitcase and packed a few things in it. Some clothes, a few books, a few pictures. She glanced at the shining silver ring with the bright blue water lilly diamond on her finger and stifled a cry. She slipped it off and placed it on top of the picture her and Dean had taken a few weeks ago at the ice rink, "I'm so sorry Dean." she whispered, "I love you, but I won't let you die because of me." she frowned, "I need to protect everyone I love and that means I have to disappear, as if I never even exisited." she sniffled.
Lyanna took one last glance around the room before she grabbed the keys to her car and shimmied herself out the window and down the side of the house. She got into her car and pressed on the gas peeling out of the Singer driveway, blinking the tears away as she forced herself not to look back.
Christmas Eve 7:18pm
"Lyanna! Dean!" Sam called as he gently shook his brother and Lyanna
"I knew it wasn't gonna work!" Bobby snapped, "Balls!"
"Bobby, we're good." Dean croaked as he opened his eyes, "Mind untying us though?"
Lyanna let out a breath as she slowly became aware of what was happening, "You got my message." she smiled, as Sam helped her to her feet
Sam nodded, "You gave us just enough to work with." he said, "You guys are gonna be a little out of it for the next couple of hours though, apparently Kramcibatio venom is like morphine but way more lethal."
Bobby slipped his arm around Lyanna while Sam grabbed his brother and they helped them out to the Impala and got them settled into the back seat, "So what was it like being in the memories?" Sam asked as Bobby started driving back to his place
Lyanna and Dean exchanged a look, both of them seeming flustered, "I-I don't really remember right now.." Lyanna lied, "Dean?"
Dean shrugged, "Yeah, it's kinda fuzzy." he nodded
Sam didn't look convinced but didn't press it any further, "Maybe after some sleep you guys will be able to talk about whatever it is you did see." he shrugged
Lyanna bit her lip and nodded, "We definitely need to talk." she whispered to Dean
"Tomorrow." Dean agreed, "You can make it up to me by baking me a pie." he smirked, before he shut his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
