We've reached the end! Thank you all for your lovely reviews, especially those of you who reviewed this story so regularly. You are all beautiful!
And of course, thank you for reading my story. Much love, LSS.
It took them another day to return to Voltura, coming into the city during the blackness of night. For her she'd just left, but for everyone else she'd been gone much longer. Granted although it wasn't a particularly long time to a vampire, she was sure they had felt every minute of it. Entering into the cool stone halls of the castle made her feel at ease.
It also felt slightly like deja vu as she walked through the guest entrance that lead into the throne room. There they sat, as they had before deciding whether her creator got to live or die. Both beautiful, both throwing themselves to their feet at the sight of her, rushing forward to wrap their arms around her in an embrace.
She could feel their fear and relief with equal measure, "I'm here." She croaked out emotionally, surrendering to the tight embraces. They stood there, as Wendy felt the relief of everyone in the room. She stepped back looking at them, touching Aro's hand gently. The anger flared first then a sober sadness.
His voice echoing through the chamber, "Marcus is dead."
Caius nodded, taking it the way a soldier takes the lose of a fellow man. She could feel their sadness, everyone's as they all paid a silent homage to the lost king. He added to her, "They will pay for this. We let them live out of mercy and-"
Wendy cut him off, touching his cheek. "You let them live as an example, not kindness. You let them live like men waiting for the axe to drop."
Aro gave her a wry smile, "Always so sharp, amore." She just raised an eyebrow at him.
"Besides now is not the time for it. I want to talk with the two of you." They nodded, issued their dismissal to the guard and were off to Wendy's room. As soon as she walked through the light doors she let out a happy sigh, it was good to be home. They seemed just as happy to see her in the space, which had been kept meticulously cleaned for her, barely a speck of dust in sight. She looked at them, taking in both men standing in the room, and their glowing emotions for her.
"I'm okay." She said again, now that they were alone. The reaction was immediate, both men caved in different ways. Aro rushed forward to touch her face, soaking in her thoughts like they were the only ones he wanted to read. And Caius dropped to his knees. Wendy moved forward sinking to the ground before him. "Caius?"
The look on his face broke her down the middle as she began to rake her fingers through his hair. The guilt coming off of him, so strong it could choke her. "I'm a warrior, the only job I have is to make sure you're safe. I failed, I let them take you and I couldn't find you. You were just gone, ripped away like the wind and I couldn't." Caius's voice cracked, as he desperately held on to her. "What is this life without you, but cold power and misery. This was a quarter of what Marcus must have felt, and I left him like that, trapped in Hell."
Wendy just held him, not knowing what kind of words she would need to stitch such a large wound. Even Aro looked surprised, crouched by the two of them, his hand still hovered against her lower back, like if he let go she would disappear completely. The love from them was humbling, to have been missed so utterly. She could tell from the way Caius shook that if he could, he would be crying.
Aro's playfulness was gone, leaving the two of them looking like soldiers that had just returned from a bloody war. "I'm here." She didn't know what to say more than that. "I'll be more careful. I am so sorry."
"Do not apologize for someone else's folly, Wendy." Aro's voice remained serious, an edge to it she'd never experienced before, "You're not the one that will reap the consequences." She was once again finding that the two of them were different than they presented themselves. Her Aro was secretly a lion heart.
Wendy gave him time to stand before she spoke, "Sit down, love. We're immortal, there's no rush." He did as she asked, fluffing out his suit jacket before sitting, ankles crossing politely. Even in anger, he peacocked. She smiled at him, eyes sparkling even as her hands still stroked through the silken strands of her other mates. "Between the two of you," She scoffed, "I'm surprised Voltura stands."
Caius who's face was pressed against her chest, laughed. "Indeed." He leaned back, wiping at his clean features with some foreign long forgotten reflex. "The guard was ravenous to find you as well, you've got us all at your feet." He reached out touching a loose strand of her hair. "You smell of stale air, would you like to wash up?"
Wendy nodded, shifting to stand, holding out one hand for each as she pulled them into the bathroom with her. Both men glanced at each other in surprise, not used to intimacy when all together. Yet Wendy didn't seem to mind as she pulled off the clothes, dropping them into the waist basket underneath the counter. The two stared, both unabashed, in a way that made her feel even more beautiful.
She walked toward Caius first, hands on his jacket, so she could lift up to kiss him gently on the lips. Dropping down she did the same for Aro, feeling his hands ghost familiarly over her hips. "Minx."
Wendy smiled at them, "Who said you both weren't invited?"
At this both men grinned, the way men do when offered affection in such ways. She left them to walk into the shower, waiting the few seconds it took for both to undress as she turned on the hot water. Caius was the first to make it inside, arms wrapping around her waist as he joined her under the stream. He let out a teasing hum of approval as Aro leaned against the wall close by.
"You claim victory now," Aro said causally catching her eye, "But we will see whose name she cries loudest."
Wendy covered her mouth with a hand to stifle the huff of desire. "This is a game I would like to play."
Her blonde mate's lips came to her ear, arms tightening. "Let's get started them." He didn't give her time to react to his words, pressing her chest first into the wall, hands coming to pull back her hips. Caius leaned down placing an open mouth kiss on her shoulder, before having his way with her.
Though Wendy could say later with some relish that it was Aro, as it always seemed to be, who got her to shout louder. They lay there, comfortable on her bed as the sun filtered through the clouds. Aro who lay closest to the windows, shone the brightest, skin sparkling like chainmail. She traced a spiral across his stomach, while her other hand wrapped in-between Caius's fingers.
She had found her voice, her place in the world, and the strength she needed to succeed here. More than anything however, as she looked at Caius's peaceful expression and Aro's complacent stare she knew that she'd found love. The home she had always been searching for, the missing in her chest. She was floating, like an untethered balloon, curious of how high she would go.
Wendy was sure, she would touch the heavens.
Just so you all know! There's no plans for a sequel or future works with Wendy and the kings. This is the end of their story for me. And remember, anyone can be a writer. Get your dreams out there!
Reviews are unexpected, but always appreciated! I'd love to know what ya'll thought of the story as a whole!
