It was dark. I could see, but not very well.

The dust all around me was swarming in my vision, making everything blurring. However, I could still see Percy beside me. I could feel the itch at the back of my throat. My hands were covered in blood; my blood. My blonde curls were all grey from the dirt.

The realization hit me like a brick to the head; we had gotten into a car crash.

I tried to squeeze myself through our flipped car, but it wouldn't budge; we were stuck.

As my vision cleared, I saw the people on the roads all around us were on their phones, dialling quickly, probably calling the police.

The truck driver that hit us was crying on the side of the road, seemingly praying. At least he cared.

My attention veered back to Percy. He was coughing. He probably had dirt in his lungs, like me. His jet black hair was covered in dust. His sea-green eyes met my grey ones, asking a silent question: are you okay?

We both knew his question was ridiculous since we both obviously weren't okay, but I nodded anyway.

"Can you open your door?" I asked him through a series of coughs.

He tried opening it, pushing it open, kicking it, but nothing worked. My fiancée tried everything, but the universe really hated us today.

"Come here," he said, motioning for me to get close to him. I did. I crawled to him, as hard as it was, and once I was in his arms, we cuddled like there was no tomorrow (which there might not be).

After another ten minutes, an ambulance, a firetruck and a police car arrived.

I couldn't hear what they were saying exactly, but I did hear a lot of screaming.

"It's gonna be okay," Percy reassured me as he felt me shiver in his embrace. "It's gonna be okay, we're gonna be safe."

And I believed him. I really did. But then I smelled gas.

That was a bad sign.

Finally, the firefighters managed to get the door on Percy's side open.

I sighed, relieved, but neither of us could walk at this point, and all of us knew that.

"Hey, guys, you okay?" the guy who opened the door asked.

I nodded, but Percy's expression stayed neutral.

"C'mon, dude," the guy said. "Let's get you out of here."

"No," Percy said firmly. He looked me straight in the eyes. "Her first."

The firefighter nodded, and Percy passed me to him. The slowly dragged me out. I couldn't carry my own weight, so the man had to carry me. I was facing Percy. He smiled and mouthed, I love you.

Then the car exploded.

;;;

I was silently crying in my room when Thalia came in. Ever since the accident, I moved in with Thalia. Honestly, I couldn't ask for a better friend.

"Hey, you okay?" she asked, even though she knew I wasn't. It's been a month, two weeks, and four days since Percy died.

"No," I said, sobbing. "Not at all."

"Come here," she said, hugging me tightly. I hugged her back, crying into her shoulder. Why did he have to die? Why couldn't this all just be a dream?

When we pulled apart, I sniffled before saying, "Today was supposed to be our wedding day."

"I know, sweetie, I know," Thalia said, pulling her into a hug once again.

For the rest of that day, I just sat in Thalia's arms, sobbing, and thinking about how he had said to let me out first. He knew the car would explode. He wanted me out before it happened. But he knew. He knew he would die.

"Her first," he had said.

Her first.

Those words changed everything.

IM SORRY, OKAY?
