Chapter 24: Those Three Little Words
Danny and Valerie flew to the park, landing in an area hidden by trees. Danny still had Vlad's machine with him.
The same one Vlad wanted use to reprogram his brain.
"Well, that takes care of that..."The Red Huntress said. "I don't know what was going on, but all that matters is Vlad's plan was ruined..."She added.
"Agreed..."Danny said with a nod. "Thanks again for everything..." He said, holding out his hand to Valerie.
Valerie looked at it for a moment before shaking it.
"Like I said, we have a truce..."The Red Huntress said. "Besides it'd be no fun beating you when you have amnesia..."She joked.
At least, Danny thought it was a joke. He didn't remember her well enough to be sure.
Before he could say anything, Valerie looked to the machine.
"Taking that thing was a good idea..."She added.
"Even if he rebuilds the remote, taking this limits his plans..."Danny said and Valerie agreed.
"So, what now?..."She asked.
"Regroup and find a way to get my memories back..."Danny said in a determined way, until he noticed something.
The machine is still active and it was still humming, reading "Microvoyagers online".
"We should smash this..."Danny said, getting a bad feeling about it.
"You'll have to do that yourself..."Valerie said, not liking the signals she was getting from the machine. "Plus, we still got those ghosts back there with your crew dealing with them..."She said.
Before Danny could say anything, he heard footsteps.
"Danny!..."Was suddenly heard.
They both looked ahead to see Star, who is still with her jumpsuit, running towards them.
"I guess this is where I go. I'm gonna go see how your crew is doing…" Val said as she got on her hoverboard, flying off before Danny could ask what was up.
"Danny!..." Star called out
Danny looked to Star relieved to see her but he was also noticed that the others were not present.
"Star! What are you doing?..."He asked.
"I was worried about you and Valerie..."Star answered as she stopped in front of him. "Plus, we managed to keep the ghosts in check for now..."She added.
"How?..."Danny questioned as she reached him.
"We managed to knock them away and we kind of split up..."She said as she recalled what happened and how she decided to come and check on him.
FLASHBACK
A little earlier
It was about five minutes after Valerie left, that Star looked in the direction they had flown in. She also heard what she said about Plasmius possibly leading Danny to a trap and she was worried about her currently absentminded boyfriend.
She wanted to save him and help him get his memory back. She was also worried that Vlad would try something nasty again.
She didn't care how strong he is or how Valerie is already giving him a hand, she didn't want to leave him to deal with that maniac without her.
The ghosts were still sent back and Team Phantom was still recovering and regrouping before they had to deal with them again when they inevitably show up.
Star didn't even speak as she looked in that direction. A certain goth girl, who was taking a much needed breath, noticed her silence and decided to speak up.
"Star, how are you holding up?..."Sam said, only to notice that the blonde wasn't listening. "Star?..."She asked again.
Star wasn't listening as she continued to glare in the direction where they went.
She knew that she should pay attention and keep an eye out for trouble but she had someone else on her mind.
"I'm going after Danny..."She declared as she stood up.
"What?..."Jazz and the others asked, looking surprised.
"You heard what Val said, she's going to help take Vlad down..."Star said as he readied her saber. "I'm going with them..."She said before she ran off, wanting to assist.
It took a moment for them to register what she said.
"Star, wait?..."Sam called but she was already gone.
"There she goes..."Tucker said, while Jazz groaned.
"Seriously? I'm happy for Danny she's so loyal but we need deal with the ghosts..."Jazz said, annoyed.
She was ignored as Sam started to walk.
"I'm going too..."The goth girl said, only for Jazz to grab her arm.
"We can't split up any further. We still need to deal with the ghosts when they get back..." Jazz reminded.
Sam pouted angrily at that.
End Of Flashback
Present Time
In retrospect, she should've stuck around, but she couldn't wait.
"So, I came without thinking..."Star said in a slightly guilty tone.
"Well, I appreciate the assist but Val and I already kicked Vlad's butt..."Danny said.
Star sighed.
"Right, I shouldn't be so impulsive..."She said, not surprised that they managed to beat Vlad.
Before Danny could respond to that, something happened. Vlad's machine started doing something as sounds were coming from it.
"What is that?..."Star asked.
"A machine Vlad wanted to use to try and turn me into a slave..."Danny explained. "I took it before he could use it..."He said until the sudden thought of destroying the machine entered his mind.
Danny had a thought.
"Maybe this thing getting destroyed will restore my memories?..."He considered.
"Maybe..."Star said in an unsure tone.
Danny was about to destroy it, only for it to go off.
"What's happening?!..."Star asked nervously.
"I don't know..."Danny said, stepping back in alarm.
Things went south when the machine began vibrating like crazy and loud beeping could be heard. Then, he felt something.
Something painful.
"What the-..."Danny said in shock as he felt it in his head.
It seems Vlad had one last trick up his sleeve. During the fight, Vlad had remotely activated the machine, which resulted in it sending a signal to the nanobots.
Now the machine is making the robots do something...and Danny was suddenly experiencing a migraine!
A big one!
"AHH!..."Danny exclaimed as he fell to his knees.
It was like the pain he has felt during his visions...only WAY WORSE!
"Danny..." Star called out in worry.
He tried to reach Star but the pain was too much for him.
It was like something inside was on fire!
"AH!..."Danny screamed again, gripping his head.
"Danny!..."Star shouted in concern at the sight of him on the ground, hissing in pain.
She didn't know what to do but Danny, despite his pain, pointed to the machine.
"Star, shut down the machine!..."Danny ordered, trying to ignore the throbbing pain in his skull.
"How?!..."Star asked, trying to figure a way out of this.
"You gotta disrupt the power flow with something!..."Danny suggested, still holding onto his head.
It felt like the nanobots were attacking his brain.
Star tried to think fast for anything that could work. She then got an idea but it was risky.
"Please, let this work..."She thought as she picked up her saber, stabbing it into the machine, twisting her saber inside it.
Sparks flew as she then proceeded to cut her saber through the machine, ripping through the circuits. It created a small burst that pushed them back and hit the ground but they were relatively fine.
"I think it worked..."Star said as she looked to her boyfriend.
Danny then slowly got up, rubbing his temples. He let out a sigh of relief as the pain just left. He was glad that it was over.
It felt like something flowed in and cleaned his head. He had a feelings those nanobots can't hurt him anymore.
Still...
"Just to make extra sure…"He said as he punched it and pulled out a large piece of the interior.
The result was the machine's insides being shattered and in pieces. Anyway, with the machine's power dealt with, Danny wasted no time in phasing the parts out of it, effectively rendering it useless.
Good.
With the remote smashed and the machine destroyed, Vlad can't try to brainwash him or his mom again.
"Way to go, Danny-Boo!..."Star said happily, smiling widely.
Danny smiled at that.
"Just doing my job..."Danny said modestly, before he smiled.
Star smiled at him, relieved that he wasn't hurt anymore... and maybe a little hopeful.
"Do… does this mean… you remember?..."She asked, hoping for the best.
Danny only blinked.
"Remember what?..."He asked and Star's smile dropped, her heartbreak returning.
"You still don't remember… us? Do you?..."She asked, sounding sad.
Danny tried to think, but couldn't think of what to say. He did recall some memories with her and things were a bit clearer but nothing to imply romance.
He was remembering a lot, just not everything. It was kind of cloudy but not clear enough. He shook his head. It was like a puzzle but he didn't have all the pieces, so he couldn't put it together.
"Star, I'm sorry..."He said sincerely as he saw the disappointed look on her face.
Star sighed sadly.
"It's okay… take your time. Just know this… I'm sorry for the fight we had. I know you can't remember it, but it was a stupid idea to celebrate something for 3 months, a concept not everyone would do. Just know… I'm sorry… and… I love you..."She said as she then kissed his left cheek.
"She...loves me?..."Danny thought, wide eyed and turning red.
As Star sighed and looked away, it happened.
Suddenly, more visions came to his mind. This time, visions of the blonde girl before him, but not like the ones from earlier.
"Oh, Danny Boo..."Star said in the vision.
"Yes, Starlight..."Danny said with a chuckle as she hugged him.
He then had a vision where she hugged him from behind, apparently happy to see him. Unlike when he remembered Colette doing it, he remembered that he smiled and seemed happy to see her.
"Huh?..."Danny let out as more visions came to his mind.
Unlike the other times, this was neither unpleasant or filled him with fear. No, it was happy and full of love.
He saw visions of them hugging on some kind of island, she seemed really happy with him about something. Another vision involved them in a cramped space, practically pressed against each other but they were talking and they both seemed calm and happy with each other.
More of these visions...these memories came and they just got clearer and more consistent. Everything came back to him like a bolt of lightning but without the pain.
It felt the opposite.
"Hey...there..my...pretty Starlight..."He said, and unknown to him, he was saying this out loud.
Star is surprised at what she just heard.
"Did he just say-..."Star thought in shock as she turned around, wondering what's going on with him.
"Danny?..."She asked in concern, while he still looked at her funny.
She got worried.
If those nanobots were still doing something to Danny's mind, she'd tear Vlad apart molecule by molecule after this.
"I said...my Starlight..."He continued, still saying his thought out loud, unaware that she was listening as more memories came to him.
He didn't notice. He was too busy letting what was happening in his head happen.
He remembered everything now!
He remembered who his friends are, who his family is. He remembered he got his powers and how he'd been wanting to be an astronaut since he was five. He even remembered last Tuesday's math test where he got a B-.
However, the last and most important memories were the one's with Star in them.
He remembered her smiling face as they were in the locker that night.
He remembered kissing her in the Ghost Zone, starting their relationship.
He remembered kissing her as Danny Phantom under the moonlight on their first date.
He remembered walking through the school together, holding hands.
He remembered saying something and making her laugh. He also remembered that she has a nice laugh too.
He remembered he kissing, the hand holding, the times they've saved each other.
It was amazing, it was like he was becoming whole!
He remembered EVERYTHING!
Suddenly, the visions stopped and Danny opened his eyes in shock. He remembered everything.
Everything!
He then turned to Star and felt his heart pound in his chest. It was like he was seeing her for the first time. There was a smile was on his face as he looked at her, he remembered who she is and what he feels for her.
She really WAS his girlfriend.
"I-I remember...I REMEMBER!..."Danny said in pure joy now.
"Star, I'm Back! I remember us!..."He said in excitement.
"You remember?..."Star said and to her amazement, Danny approached her.
He no longer looked at her with mistrust, confusion or even tolerance as of recently. No, he looked at her...like he was falling in love with her all over again.
"Star...I remember everything! I remember who I am. I remember I'm your boyfriend..."He said excitedly as he put his hands on her waist lifting her in the air and he spun her around happily
Star was slowly smiling as she was placed back on her feet.
"Really?..."She asked hopefully
Danny smiled widely and couldn't stop looking at his girlfriend.
HIS GIRLFRIEND!
The girlfriend who said those three little words he realizes he feels for her. He had a response.
"I remember that you're my girlfriend...and...that I-I think I love you..."Danny declared as he smiled warmly.
Star's eyes widen upon hearing that. Her heart beat fast upon hearing those words. Those three little words she has wanted to hear for so long.
"F-For real?!..."Star asked in a hopeful, joyous tone.
"For real..."Danny said as he hugged her.
Star then felt tears forming in her eyes as she hugged him back, savoring this moment.
"Now this is a memory!..."She said as she felt so happy right now.
She finally had her Danny-Boo back and he told her that he loves her.
He really, truly loves her!
It's what she wanted to hear all day.
"Danny...My Danny-Boo..."Star thought happily, feeling so light right now.
He picked her up and spun her around again, looking up at her with the biggest smile on his face. After a moment, he lowered her to the ground and looked into her eyes.
"I love you too..."She declared, saying it and meaning it with all her heart
Danny and Star soon shared a kiss. The blonde girl wrapped her arms around his shoulders, holding him tight while he put his arms around her waist.
The young lovers held each other tight, not wanting to let the other go. They just had to hold onto each other. It was worrisome if someone saw them but if felt like the right thing to do. Star had one thing to say after they pulled away to breath.
"Best Quaterverserary ever!..."Star whispered as she looked into his eyes before they continued to kiss.
After all the pain and suffering they had to go through today, her Danny is back to normal.
She finally had her boyfriend back!
