Chapter 12 – Dino Rescue and Release

It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. A pack of raptors, Una and Eric stood on the out fringes of that clearing just staring at the Spinosaurus.

It had stopped is low moaning bellow, clearly because it realized that they were there now and they were deciding whether or not to help.

Una glanced to him, glanced back to the trapped Spinosaurus and then took a step forward. Eric gabbed Una's arm and dragged her back.

"Are you out of your mind? If we free that thing it'll kill us!"

"It's crying for help," she told him and then she just stared at him. This expectant sort of stare that was telling him to basically just understand that it crying for help meant they should help it.

And he already knew he wasn't going to argue either. There was no point. She had made up her mind and he could either help or leave.

He sighed. Great. They were going to set free a giant human-eating monster who probably didn't like them very much.

Una moved forward almost slowly. She was crouched down low and slowly easing her way towards the massive bulk of the dinosaur and the wires that were binding it up.

And as she moved its head moved so it's one good eye could follow them. She reached out a hand to grab the first line she came across and then looked it over.

She had clearly never seen anything like it before.

But Eric had.

It was a braided metal.

No wonder it couldn't get itself free.

"You can't cut with this with a knife," he told her. "We need cable cutters."

"Do you have… those?"

Eric nodded. "Don't do anything until I get back."

Eric ran all the way back to the compound. And with him went two Raptors, flanking him as he ran. He was going as fast as he could and yet he could tell that they were basically slowed to a trot to keep his pace. It warmed his heart to have the pack run with him, because he realized that they were there to help him, to make sure he wasn't cornered by another predator because he was on his own.

They got back to the compound, he got into the garage and found the cable cutters, then he was on his way back to the clearing. It was also great that the raptors had come with him because they'd be able to direct him back to where they had left cause in his panic he had not marked out a route.

By the time he got back he couldn't see Una anywhere but the Spinosaurus was chewing on something.

Oh god.

No.

"Una! Where's…"

But Una popped up on the other side of the Spinosaurus's head. She then clamoured over it's snout. Dear god, why was she treating the thing like a goddamn jungle gym? She couldn't have gone around?

She scampered towards him while he just glared at her.

"What the hell is it eating?"

"Pack hunted it food."

They had gotten it food? This wasn't normal behaviour. "Why?"

"It's hungry," she said as if that explained everything.

"What were you even doing? Over there? Why would you go near it?"

"Checking the eye. Make sure it's healed," she said and when he glared at her she said: "Predators deserve help too, Eric!"

Yeah, okay, sure, but this one was probably holding a grudge so it probably wasn't wise for the person who blinded it in one eye to be anywhere near it's mouth.

"Right, let's get this over with, okay?"

Together they went to the Spinosaurus's side. He put the cable cutters to the first wire. It took a lot but eventually he got it to go through and it came free with a metallic ping.

But that was the problem. The sound was foreign and therefore frightening. So the Spinosaurus began to thrash.

"Tell it to calm down!"

"Can't. Don't know it's words."

She couldn't speak it's language?!

So instead she put her hands onto it's hide and began to talk Raptor to it, like that was going to work. But then all the raptors joined in and eventually the Spinosaurus calmed itself down but it's whole body was heaving as it took big deep breaths. Not calming breaths, it was clearly panicking.

She motioned for him to cut again, and he did. That same ping hit the air and the Spinosaurus let out a little bit of a huff and the dirt around it's mouth went flying. The raptors standing with them began to shift on their feet. A sort of high whine came out of it, like it was getting upset.

Una kept her hands on its hide trying to chirrup to it to keep it calm, but even Eric could tell that it wasn't really working.

She turned back to him her wide eyes even wider, clearly starting to panic herself. "Keep going. Go fast."

So he did.

He clipped the third wire when the Spinosaurus began to thrash again. And as it thrashed the cables moved making it harder for him to really get a grip of the wires. Una took a step away from the creature as it continued to struggle, trying to get up.

The raptors all retreated to the bushes, except for Una's mother who was barking to her.

Una was clearly ignoring her though. She instead rushed to Eric and helped him steady the rope.

"Keep going!" Una cried so he did.

With her help he managed to cut through six more wires before the rest of them snapped or slid away from the creature and then suddenly it was free and struggling to get up.

Eric scrambled back as it lumbered up and the out of that hole. He got all the way to the bushes and only then realized that Una was with him. She was still out in the open, her mother standing a few paces back making this chuffing whine at her, but Una didn't move.

Well Eric wasn't about to leave her to face it alone, so tried to rush back to her. He got to her, put a hand out to try to pull her away but by then the Spinosaurus was out and it was clearly too late.

Finally free the Spinosaurus stood there, heaving before it let out one long terrible roar. Eric clapped his hands to his ears, so did Una, but she didn't run and he couldn't move her.

And then the Spinosaurus turned to them.

For a long while it just stared down at her while she stared up at him. Eric was only half a step behind her, a hard at the ready to grab her out of the way in case it tried to gobble her up, not that he thought it would help.

Eventually it huffed, and a warm foul-smelling gust of air blew their hair up and off of their face. Eric waited, barely breathing but after a long while it just straightened and walked away.

Eric doubled over sucking in as much air as his lungs could handle while the raptors around them had brayed and barked at it's retreating back.

But Una, Una was watching the way it walked her head tilted to the side. Eric could see it too. It was limping.

He turned to the woman who he loved dearly more than anything. "Don't you dare think about bringing that sucker back to our nest. And don't go after it either."

"I won't," she said but he could tell that she had something in mind he just wished he knew what it was. "I'm going to go help the others. You do your work."

She moved away, her and her pack heading back towards the bushes to disappear.

Eric nodded, moved to turn away and then promptly paused.

"Wait a second did you say others?"

Una eventually led him further into the jungle where an upturned parade of cages was found. Trucks were overturned, cages lay on their side and inside were different kinds of dinosaurs, mostly juvenile or small, were caged inside.

He could already tell that some were injured which meant they would be coming back with him to the compound

But what upset him the most was the logo on the lead truck. Ingen's logo.

Ingen had sent people to capture dinosaurs.

It hadn't worked out well for them. By the looks of it the Spinosaurus had picked them off before they stuck it into that hole.

But if someone had trapped it in there, where had that person gone?

And he got his answer when he asked Una if the pack knew of any bipeds walking around. Bipeds that weren't them or Billy. Not only did she know about the other person, but she knew what happened to him too.

Eaten.

He had come across Una talking to her mother, and her mother had the pack hunt and kill him.

Eric might have been angry had it been any other circumstance. But seeing as there was no way Ingen could ever find out about Una he would have had her pack kill him too. Or, since the pack didn't listen to him, had gotten Una to tell the pack to hunt him down.

So, after helping Una free the trapped dinosaurs. After helping her get the injured ones back to their nest to heal. After Una ran off with her pack, her backpack over her shoulder, to deal with what she said was raptor business. After Eric was certain he was alone, he picked up his satellite phone and called his contact at Ingen.

When Masrani Global Corp bought out InGen and the two islands, the whole management changed. Not that that mattered to Eric because he didn't know them but it meant that he got to deal with people who only knew stories, and hadn't been there to see it all originally fall to shit. Made it easier for him to talk his way into this little project they thought he was on.

Riker was his main contact, he was a director of the research team, or something like that. He had some fancy title that Eric didn't care to remember mainly because it made no sense. But it was Riker that he had been sending all of his info to, so he figured that if someone was sending teams to capture dinos it would be him too.

He answered on the second ring, which was standard for him because he was always eager to get more information from him.

They exchanged pleasantries and then Riker asked what Eric wanted, or if he had new information for him.

"Actually, I do," he said. "That team you sent to the island… yeah all of them are dead."

For a moment Riker was silent as he took that in.

"I uh…"

"And I freed the dinosaurs they caught," Eric snarled. "I don't know what you were thinking…"

"I was thinking that Ingen owns those creatures and we can do what we want with them," Riker told him. "Capture and Construction went without a hitch on Nublar with your intel, your island is the only one giving us issues and I'm starting to think that you might be the problem."

A beat of worry ran through Eric.

Construction? As in another park? They were really going to try and open Jurassic Park… again?

"What are you saying? That I'm controlling the dinosaurs?" he asked because he knew it was the ridiculous thing to say. To accuse of someone.

And he prayed to any god who'd listen that Riker wasn't about to bring up Una who could very much talk to dinosaurs. Maybe she couldn't control her, but the listened to her and that was all Ingen would see.

That and dollar signs.

"No. But maybe you're… sabotaging…"

"I didn't know they were here until all the chaos was over. And if you're really using my intel to capture these creatures maybe I'll just stop…"

"Stop what? Sending us updates?" Riker asked. "You go a head and stop all you want Mr. Kirby, but the only thing that's keeping you alive on that island is our continuing to send you supplies. You cut off the intel and we'll cut off your supplies. See how long you survive without us."

Eric was quiet.

He had survived 8 weeks on this island by himself with no supplies other than what Una got for him, with this set up, with Una's friendships with the other dinosaurs on the island, he'd probably be able to survive even longer.

The problem was they were going to be coming to this island whether he was there or not, and if they came here they'd find out about Una and they'd take her away, and either put her in a cage to display to everyone or put her in a lab to do all these tests on her.

Riker must have taken his silence as agreeance because he said: "There, see, now you understand. And the next time a team shows up on that island you better make sure they don't have a lick of a trouble."

Eric frowned. It was an island full of dinosaurs, what the hell did this man expect him to do?

"You can send whoever you want to send Riker. But if they die, that's on you. Not on me."

And then he hung up. His hand shaking and his heart racing. He was freaking out he couldn't help it.

He needed a plan, some way to make Una safe, but he didn't know how to do that without getting her off this island.

And he knew… there was no way she would, or could, leave.
