Chapter Ten
It was 5:00 pm and Todd planted a bomb somewhere in National City before he took Kayla and William; everyone had to work fast if they wanted to find it before it blows. They all gathered at the entrance to the Fortress, and with Kayla and Alex still out of commission, they were short two members who could fight. Felicity, Caitlin, and Iris stayed behind. The Supers and Barry grabbed John, Cisco, and Oliver and raced to the city.
They didn't care if they were going to get caught. They didn't care what General Lane would do to them; all they knew was that there was a bomb hidden somewhere in Kara's city. Clark and Kara flew overhead, and used their x-ray vision to see through the buildings; it had to be here somewhere. Barry was running the streets, looking under cars and in crowds of people; no luck. Oliver was manning the rooftops of the highrises. He came to one of the tallest buildings and on top, just sitting somewhat in the open, there it was. It was the size of a large cardboard box.
"Guys, we have a problem," Oliver said through the earpiece. "I found the bomb. I've seen one of these before, and if it explodes, it could wipe out the continent and most of Russia."
"Alright, we're coming to you," Clark responded. People were beginning to notice Kara and Clark's return; some were calling 9-1-1, others were calling news stations and, soon enough, news helicopters were flying to the scene. The heroes carefully examined the explosive and figured that there was no way to diffuse it. They sent a picture to Felicity, and she showed it to Alex; she even said that it was going to explode. Kayla heard all of this and decided that she was going to use her powers to help people. She knew she had to do it because the world needed Kara and Clark. She leaped up from the bed, luckily she felt her powers come back as soon as she woke up. She ran out the door in a heavy gust of wind, and flew straight to the people she called 'family'.
As she was flying in, it was about to turn 5:15, so she sacrificed herself, flew straight at the bomb, grabbed it, and flew high in the sky. She threw it up, but it wasn't far enough from her. She dropped through the air, nothing underneath her until she flattened on the ground in a crater of dirt and cement. Kara raced to her side, with the others close behind, and knelt, cradling her body. She was hysterical. Now, many civilians were surrounding the crash site, all watching Supergirl be human and break down; they were crying along with their hero. They saw a young girl, who Supergirl clearly held close, sacrifice her life for them; they began taking a knee to show their gratitude towards her and her actions. Soldiers came running to see what happened, all of them ready to take the superheroes down, but then realized that they had lost one of their own, someone who saved them. General Lane was yelling at them over their earpieces, telling them to shoot them; not one followed his orders, and all took a knee instead.
…
Over the next couple of hours, Caitlin used the help of the military doctors to help Kayla, as the entire Armed Forces turned on Lane. Alex was reinstated as the Director of the D.E.O. and had the medical bay and lab closed to anyone but herself, the doctors and lab technicians, Kara, Clark, and the rest of the team. Caitlin had gotten Kayla stable, but she kept dying, and there soon needed to be a decision made. After the last death and resuscitation, she had to ask for Kara's permission to pull the plugs keeping her alive. She couldn't decide, so Alex did.
Caitlin was unhooking the monitors and taking the breathing tube out of her throat when she crashed completely. There was no trying to save her this time, and Kara almost died from the pain of losing her. Alex made up her mind, and finally told her sister what she found before Kayla was kidnapped.
"You're telling she's…" Kara began, almost not able to finish. "...my sister? And now she's dead? Why Alex? Why did you tell Caitlin to turn off the life support?" she cried even harder. "It was only ten minutes after she died, and Alex told her this now?" she thought. They were still standing in the room with Kayla's body when something extraordinary, something unexplainable, happened. Kayla's heart began to beat. She shot up like she was coming up for air after an extremely long swim; Kara's hand flew over her mouth, Alex's eyes unbelieving and they didn't know what to do.
"Kara?" she said, not remembering what happened. "Alex?"
"Kayla!" Kara ran over and held her in her arms; this time she cried tears of joy. Her biological sister, something she never thought she'd have, was alive and in her arms.
"What happened?" Kayla asked, still trying to recall what happened to her. "Why are you crying and hugging me so tight? Why are we at the D.E.O?"
…
Everything was explained to Kayla over the next few days, she was able to recover, and stopped dying. Kara, Clark, Barry, and Oliver were deemed heroes once again, General Lane was dishonourably discharged from the U.S. Military and arrested for unlawful use of military personnel and equipment, and Kayla was awarded a 'Purple Heart' medal, even though she was not military. Team Arrow and Team Flash had to head home after the ceremonies. Kara and Kayla found an apartment together and were making up for the lost time. The two and Alex became closer than a fish in water. This was their life now, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
That's it!
