Kellyn and Kris: The Final Battle
The arrival to Blackthorn City was met with desolate silence, which was standard considering how the residents love to do sneak attacks on citizens as jokes. The city being surrounded by mountainous land was perfect for the Pokémon Rangers and Dragon trainers to use, while the nearby Dragon's Den and Pokémon Gym were utilized by the city folk for training. However, now, the city was in ruins, especially the Pokémon Gym and Ranger Depot, which were completely obliterated.
The four were stunned to see the destruction as most of the buildings, which were homes and skyscrapers, were decimated and in flames. As the four began exploring the area cautiously and carefully, they were relieved to see that the Dragon's Den was spared thanks to it being embedded in an underground cave.
"This is awful…there has to be someone left alive in this city. Let's go to the Dragon's Den!" Kris said as they hurried to the cave entrance.
Once the group reached the Dragon's Den, they entered and began travelling downwards.
'This is strange…Gold said there was an assault coming from Blackthorn City…but as we're exploring, we haven't come under attack…though we also haven't seen a single person here either.' Kris thought as they soon came upon the Dragon's Den itself.
The Dragon's Den was the same as last time, though the Dragon's Shrine itself was closed off, with Clair and countless city residents at the Dragon's Den entrance. Upon spotting Kris, Clair hurried up to her, with tears in her eyes, a stark contrast from the Gym Leader who usually appeared to be cold and uncaring.
"K-Kris! Y-you're here…and with backup! You have to help us…Hunter J and Giovanni are using our city as their base of operations. They had their agents destroy most of the buildings with Pokémon and countless people were killed…" Clair said.
"We're sorry about your loss everyone, we're here to help. Do you have any idea where either of them could be right now?" Kellyn asked.
"Y-yes…after they ceased attacking the city, I saw a group of agents retreat into the rubble of a dark stone building that's right by the Pokémon Center." Clair said.
"Thanks Clair, we'll storm over there right now. Take care of the citizens, please." Kris said as the quartet exited the Dragon's Den and made their way back to the surface.
Espeon was on the lookout alongside Kellyn, Kris and Chairperson Erma, using its intense Psychic powers to possibly locate the hideout. After some walking, they discovered a building made of dark stone and entered, seeing that nothing was out of the ordinary.
"Hm, looks like the place was used as storage. Espeon, are you able to detect anything?" Kellyn asked as Espeon nodded.
'Yes, the entrance is right here.' Espeon said.
Espeon moved a cluster of tiles, revealing a white cylindrical opening which soon shot up to the surface, along with two buttons on the righthand side. Upon pressing the down button, the doors opened and everyone grinned, as they knew they had found the elevator leading into the hideout.
"An elevator…come on dearies, brace yourselves, let's go!" Chairperson Erma said as the three entered the elevator.
The doors closed and elevator immediately went downwards for a very long time, and Kris was anxious considering who she was facing. Kellyn however, held her hand tightly as they continued deeper underground, putting her at ease with a smile on her face.
'Kellyn and I have been together for a while and I'm glad that we found each other too, considering how sweet and strong he is. Giovanni was a horrifying foe to face and seeing Hunter J terrified me with how ruthlessly she attacked Kellyn. But…with him, Chairperson Erma and our Pokémon…gah, our Pokémon…they're not here! Espeon's the only one!' Kris thought as Kris and Kellyn's Pokéballs appeared on their waists.
'I had to channel enough energy to get the Pokémon here. You might be wondering why I didn't teleport my companions when we headed to the Ranger Union and the answer is simple. It's because unfortunately, while I couldn't locate Rhythmi's device, due to the way it was implemented. I did read her mind to know that she attached an explosive to the device, in the event that we knocked out her Electrode after it used Endure. I was able to determine she wanted her Pokémon to use that move, but I was so focused on trying to save Kellyn and prevent you and Chairperson Erma from getting hurt. The way the device was setup was terrifyingly good, meaning that if a small group of Pokémon were in the Top Operator's Room or if there were say…a full team of Pokémon…' Espeon said as Kris gave the Pokémon a troubled look.
"W-what would've happened?" Kris asked.
'That same device Rhythmi was using to make those fiery rings would go off and trigger an explosive that would detonate instantly. If that were to have happened, I would've been unable to save us in time.' Espeon said as everyone shuddered.
"Geez, that's seriously scary…but now we're heading into Hunter J and Giovanni's territory, so they must be preparing an ambush for us. I was surprised we weren't attacked when we came here." Kellyn said.
"I agree, it is quite strange that we haven't been bombarded upon our arrival." Chairperson Erma said.
The elevator continued on for some time and the group's anxiety increased, though the elevator soon stopped moving and the doors opened to reveal a large open area decorated with lights to provide ample lighting, as the craggy rock made things hard to see due to being underground. As the group looked up, they saw a metal staircase spiraling upwards which led to a massive room that was essentially sandwiched between the top of the staircase and the underground ceiling. Something noticeable that stuck out about the room was that it was pitch black with no discernable features, and aside from the staircase, lights and the room, the area itself was empty.
As everyone began their climb, they wondered where the agents were since they left the city in disarray, as well as them attacking most, if not all of the Kanto cities and towns. Unfortunately for them, the group soon felt the staircase tremble, as if a pair of Rhydon were on it. Listening closer, they soon encountered what was making the noise, a horde of grunts, dressed in a fashion almost identical to Team Rocket grunts, though instead of a giant R on their shirt, it was one with Hunter J and Giovanni's face.
"We knew you scum would be here! Come on guys, let's finish them with our Pokémon!" One grunt said as the crowd cheered.
'Grrh, these idiots, this staircase can't take much more weight, if they release any Pokémon out, this thing will collapse.' Espeon said.
"Guys…let's run…now." Kellyn said as the three of them and Espeon ran down the staircase, with the grunts in hot pursuit and yelling all the way.
"Hey Johnson, don't let them get away! Let out that Haxorus of yours!" A grunt shouted as they heard a thud on the metal staircase.
"Oh no…" Kris said as the metal rails supporting the staircase began to creak and bend.
In one swift motion, Kellyn released his Dragonite and ordered it to fly to the side of the staircase. Wasting no time, everyone hopped on the Pokémon as the staircase began to fall. The grunts were in a mad scramble to get out their Pokémon, with some of them managing to send out multiple Hydregion, Staraptor and Skarmory as they hopped on. As the four of them fled on Dragonite while being chased by the grunts, Chairperson Erma took out her Sylveon, which made the henchmen and the Hydregion flinch in terror from the dainty looking Fairy-type.
"Sylveon, Moonblast!" Chairperson Erma said as Sylveon fired a large, round projectile at a grunt that was about twenty feet away, knocking his Hydregion backwards as it struggled to stay airborne.
To make matters worse, the thirty grunts that got on their Flying-types didn't even attempt to rescue their comrades that were still trying to get off of the staircase, which began to collapse at a faster rate thanks to some of them sending out more Pokémon to attack Kellyn's Dragonite. Ice Beams, Flamethrowers and even Solarbeams were aimed at the Pokémon, which it managed to dodge as Kris took out her Suicune atop the Dragonite, which wasn't bothered at all with the extra weight.
"Suicune, Hydro Pump those Skarmory!" Kris commanded as Suicune shot out a torrent of water, which managed to propel Dragonite a bit further and hit two of the grunts' Pokémon, making them knock into each other.
A few minutes and a lot of fighting later, Dragonite reached the elevator that led down into the dank area, with the grunts hot on their trail as they got off. Kellyn immediately sent out all his Pokémon, who were ready to fight off the goons that were nearing them. A few of the Skarmory and Staraptor were using Wing Attack relentlessly, though Kellyn's Pachirisu dissipated the moves with Thunderbolt, while Umbreon and Mimikyu used Shadow Ball.
"Hah, dumb Ranger, using Shadow Ball on a Skarmory won't do too much damage!" One of the grunts said as the two were closing in, soon flying five feet above the ground.
"I was just trying to get the real attack ready. Dragonite, Flamethrower, take those Skarmory out!" Kellyn said as Dragonite arched its head back before letting out a massive Flamethrower, hitting the Skarmory head-on while the grunts themselves weren't injured aside from singed hands.
The Skarmory were knocked out from the powerful move, making the grunts hit the ground and roll towards the group. The grunts on the Staraptor hopped off and tried to gang up on the heroic group, only for Umbreon to use Confuse Ray, while Mimikyu used Play Rough on the Staraptor, knocking them out in one shot. The grunts on the other Flying-types observed the fight from above, wondering how they would tackle the situation given how adept they saw Kellyn was at fighting.
Figuring that since their Pokémon were knocked out, the grunts charged towards the group, specifically towards Kellyn, which wasn't smart. One of the grunts that got within five feet of Kellyn was hit by Mimikyu with Shadow Claw, which sent the man far back, hitting another charging grunt. The other grunts on the Flying-types swooped down, with Sylveon and Pachirisu stepping up to help. Pachirisu first used Thunder Wave on the grunts, rendering them unable to move as they fought paralysis, while Sylveon used Dazzling Gleam on the Hydregion preparing to attack. Despite the moves used on the grunts' Pokémon, there was still a multitude of Staraptor, Skarmory and Hydregion charging onwards, continuing to use moves such as Dragon Pulse and Wing Attack.
Kellyn's Pokémon, Kris's Suicune and Chairperson Erma's Sylveon readied themselves to attack as they tried avoiding the moves. Luckily, Kellyn ordered Espeon to use Protect, shrouding the entirety of the group with a purple barrier, making the Dragon Pulses and Wing Attacks harmlessly bounce off and damage the ground around them. Espeon retracted the barrier and every Pokémon launched their strongest moves at the opposing forces, causing a massive cloud of smoke to surround the grunts and Pokémon. Kellyn and Kris made sure that their Pokémon wouldn't use moves that would inadvertently kill the henchmen, since their goal was to go after Hunter J and Giovanni and stop them instead of killing people. Once the smoke cloud cleared, they discovered that all the grunts were knocked out alongside their Pokémon, while the grunts and Pokémon on the staircase had ended up collapsing, though somehow, they were completely fine.
"M-more foes…how many are there? Twenty? Thirty?" Kellyn asked as Espeon momentarily focused.
'To be precise…forty-seven. We're in for a tough fight and even trying to sneak past into that room wouldn't work.' Espeon said as the goons and their Pokémon lumbered forward.
"In that case, let's take them out!" Kellyn said.
Kellyn, Kris and Chairperson Erma's Pokémon continuously attacked the group, barraging them with powerful attacks that went flying. Both sides were taking damage, but luckily, the trio's work as serious trainers made the enemy forces take more damage despite the far greater numbers. The majority of grunts were quickly and soundly dispatched of, though five of them remained and were raring to go, even with scars and burns adorning their bodies as they giggled with glee upon reaching the group.
"You guys are pretty strong to have survived that onslaught. We should let them go ahead…Hunter J and Giovanni would love to rip them to shreds." One of the grunts said as Chairperson Erma attacked the grunts' Absol with Sylveon's Dazzling Gleam, hitting the Dark-type hard as the goons shielded their eyes.
The other four lackeys sent out their Pokémon, consisting of three Druddigon, four Garchomp and two Machamp. Considering how powerful Sylveon was against Pokémon its moves were ineffective against, then this would be nothing for the Fairy-type since its enemies that are weak to its moves.
"Heh, what's this? A frilly pink thing? C'mon…" A grunt mocked.
"Sylveon, Draining Kiss!" Chairperson Erma said as Sylveon bounded forward and gave one of the Garchomp a kiss on its head, which hurt it badly as Sylveon recovered a good chunk of health.
"Don't worry, we'll help out!" Kellyn said as he prepared to have Pachirisu use Thunder Wave on the Machamp, though Chairperson Erma stopped him.
"No worries, I'll take it from here, you guys head on to that room, Hunter J and Giovanni have to be in there!" Chairperson Erma said.
"L-leave you?! But…" Kellyn said.
"Actually, there's no way you guys could win, so go ahead, listen to the old woman." The grunt said as his Absol went to attack Chairperson Erma directly, only to receive a Moonblast in the face, knocking it out.
"You guys go ahead, I'll fend these thugs off." Chairperson Erma said.
'She knows what to do, let's hurry!' Espeon said.
Kellyn and Kris healed up all their Pokémon and then recalled all of them except for Dragonite and Espeon as they climbed aboard. As they headed towards the intact room, they could hear Chairperson Erma yelling at the grunts, which was rather comical.
"Call me old will you?! Gah, Sylveon, Dazzling Gleam on these Pokémon!" Chairperson Erma said as she continued to valiantly fight off the grunts with ease.
"Hey, stop them!" A grunt shouted from below as Sylveon continued to attack the grunts with Moonblast.
It didn't take long for Kellyn and Kris to reach the room attached to the ceiling and even though the upper part of the staircase was still intact, the duo didn't want to risk the staircase collapsing on them. Meanwhile, Hunter J and Giovanni were waiting in the nearly empty room, discussing their plans while awaiting their archnemeses.
"So J, we have Kanto being attacked and the grunts that were in this hollowed out area have been defeated…I heard the monstrous noises taking place outside. Why didn't we make this dingy place into a sprawling maze?!" Giovanni asked.
"Giovanni, that's an easy question I have an answer to – it wouldn't work. Think about it, when the Dex Holders stormed all of your hideouts on mainland Kanto and the Sevii Islands, who was the first to reach every time?" Hunter J asked.
"Kris was…but…how's Kellyn with solving traps, tricks and puzzles?" Giovanni asked.
"Terrifyingly good, if he were on our side, we'd literally be unstoppable. After the defeat of Team Dim Sun and Team Debonairs, I thought that somehow, I'd have some advantage due to using trickery to escape on four separate occasions. Heh, how wrong I was…from what I was told, Kellyn scaled the nearly sixty floor Altru Tower by himself in under four hours…plus to make things more frustrating, he also single-handedly located me every time, aside from the one occasion where he teamed up with that fool, Ash. Believe me when I say this, no hideout we could have come up with would've slowed Kellyn down." Hunter J said.
"Well then, let's fight them as hard as we can." Giovanni said.
Right as Giovanni finished speaking, Kellyn's Dragonite burst through the floor of the room. The room itself was barren of anything aside from a table in the center, but Giovanni along with Hunter J were ready to battle Kellyn and Kris.
"You two are certainly fast, even I couldn't have fathomed you getting here so quickly." Hunter J said.
"Enough talk J, let's end this!" Kellyn said as Giovanni sighed.
"Just like Kris, always wanting to battle. So be it, you two are going to be finished!" Giovanni said as Hunter J and him took out their Pokémon, while Kellyn and Kris did the same.
Hunter J and Giovanni's team consisted of two Rhyperior, two Arbok, three Weezing, Gengar and a Heracross.
"We'll fight for the Ranger Union, Kanto and Johto! I can't believe you convinced Rhythmi to work for you guys!" Kris said as Hunter J snickered.
"Rhythmi? That stupid woman didn't mean anything dead or alive. I would've expected her to at least stall you two, but she couldn't even do that. Least I won't have to pay her anymore." Hunter J said as Kellyn's Mimikyu launched a Shadow Ball at the Gengar.
The resulting battle was even more chaotic than what took place with the grunts, as attacks got lobbed back and forth. Due to the closed quarters of the room, Pokémon on both teams got hit quite often, with Kellyn's Pokémon trying to protect Suicune and hold off against the fierce Heracross and Rhyperior.
"Suicune, hang in there! Use Hydro Pump!" Kris ordered as Suicune shot a torrent of water at a Rhyperior, making it slam into a Weezing.
"Grh, annoying brat, Heracross, Megahorn on that Suicune!" Giovanni said.
"No! Espeon, Haxorus, Protect!" Kellyn said as both Pokémon put up their barriers.
Despite the strength of Kellyn's Pokémon, Heracross teamed up with another Rhyperior and they both used Megahorn, shattering the barrier as Espeon, Haxorus and Suicune took a hard blow, with Espeon in particular getting hit badly.
Kellyn's Mimikyu and Umbreon jumped in with Shadow Ball, hitting the Heracross and slamming it into the Rhyperior, with the sturdy Rock and Ground type getting knocked unconscious, though there was still one left.
"Knock out my Rhyperior will you?! Gengar, Shadow Ball on that Suicune, now!" Hunter J said as Gengar lurched forward and shot a Shadow Ball at Mimikyu.
Kellyn saw the attack and jumped right in front of Suicune, taking a direct hit as he clutched his stomach in pain. Pokémon on opposing team were stunned from the act, seeing Kellyn willingly take a hit for a Pokémon that wasn't even his gave them a very different perspective from how Hunter J and Giovanni treated them, though they still had to follow their trainer's orders, begrudgingly. Unfortunately for the dastardly duo, Kris and her Suicune were absolutely furious, their eyes were filled with rage from the callous attack that was done.
"Suicune, Ice Beam on that Heracross and Rhyperior!" Kris said as Suicune shot out a misty, cold beam.
The move made an impact on the Heracross first, freezing it solid while the second Rhyperior was overwhelmed by the sheer power of Suicune, getting knocked out quickly. Now that both Rhyperior were down, Kellyn focused on the Arbok and Weezing, which attacked sparsely.
"Okay. Pachirisu, Discharge on those Poison-types!" Kellyn said as the small Pokémon unleashed a torrent of pent up energy towards the opposing forces.
One of the Arbok became paralyzed, though it recovered almost instantly thanks to Shed Skin. Two of the Weezing survived, but barely, while the third got paralyzed. The second Arbok shot out a Gunk Shot, hitting Mimikyu and making the adorable Pokémon faint, which only made Kellyn want to fight harder as his rage built up.
'That look in his eyes…it's just like the first time I escaped from him…it's terrifying…' Hunter J thought as Dragonite and Haxorus used Dragon Pulse on the still frozen Heracross, knocking it out as the ice shattered.
"No! I won't lose! Gengar, Shadow Punch!" Giovanni ordered as Gengar vanished and subsequently reappeared, punching Umbreon right in its face as it retaliated with a fierce Bite.
"Weezing, Ice Beam." Hunter J said as both Weezing launched their Ice Beam at Haxorus.
"Umbreon, Protect!" Kellyn said as Umbreon tried to jump in front of Haxorus, though unfortunately, the move was too quick and Haxorus got hit at a critical spot, knocking it out.
'M-my Pokémon…I'm sorry…' Kellyn thought as he grit his teeth.
"Alright, looking good. Arbok, aim for that Umbreon with Sludge Bomb." Hunter J said.
"Pachirisu, Shock Wave! Espeon, Psychic!" Kellyn said.
"Suicune, let's lend a hand with Hydro Pump!" Kris said.
Espeon's Psychic energy enveloped one of the Arbok as it swung the Pokémon at the second Arbok, hitting both of them hard as Pachirisu's Shock Wave hit them as well. To make things better for the dynamic duo, the Arbok's Sludge Bomb didn't execute as it was charging up, so the poisonous move ended up splashing over their bodies, knocking out one of them. The first Arbok was hit by the Hydro Pump, barely hanging on with a sliver of health left.
"Nice work team, okay, Umbreon, Shadow Ball on that Gengar!" Kellyn said.
Umbreon launched a fast moving purple ball at the shadowy Pokémon, which it tried to avoid with no avail and the Gengar took a direct hit, getting knocked out as Hunter J smirked, with both Umbreon and Gengar collapsing.
"Having some of my Pokémon not attack often was a good choice, hm? Destiny Bond is a good move." Hunter J said.
"Grh…you disgust me…Dragonite, Hyper Beam!" Kellyn said.
"Suicune, Aurora Beam, go!" Kris said.
"Dodge it!" Hunter J said.
Unfortunately for her, neither Weezing could dodge such well-timed moves and the fiery Hyper Beam and Aurora Beam hurt both Weezing for a ton of damage.
"J, do we retreat?" Giovanni asked.
"No way, we'll keep fighting!" Hunter J said.
"Pachirisu, Thunderbolt!" Kellyn said.
Pachirisu shot out a fast, fierce wave of electricity, which the Weezing dodged as they followed up with Double Hit. Even though Kellyn tried to get Pachirisu to dodge, the Weezing's attack still managed to connect, knocking the Pokémon back as Kellyn caught it.
"Dragonite, Wing Attack! Espeon, Psychic!" Kellyn said.
Both Pokémon attacked the Weezing simultaneously, knocking both out as the battle with Hunter J and Giovanni finished.
"Let's rally these two up so they don't escape! Espeon, hold them in place!" Kellyn said as Espeon held the two evildoers in place.
"Grh…I-I can't believe it…you two beat us…" Hunter J said as Kellyn tied the two up.
"Sorry Kris…you and my Pokémon were my team in this fight…and this fight had you guys get hurt too much…" Kellyn said as Kris began healing up their Pokémon to full health.
"Don't say that, it was insanely difficult. I'm glad we brought these two down!" Kris said as the opposing team's Pokémon were put back in their Pokéballs.
"Yeah, come on Kellyn, we all fought hard to get these guys! Now that we're settled here and all healed up, let's head back down to Chairperson Erma!" Espeon said as it teleported everyone back down to where Chairperson Erma was.
The scene displayed in front of Kellyn and Kris as well as Hunter J and Giovanni was surprising, as the fierce grunts and Pokémon were destroyed by Chairperson Erma's Sylveon, who didn't even have a scratch on them.
"Hello Hunter J and Giovanni, you're finally in our clutches." Chairperson Erma said.
"Hmph, Chairperson Erma…for an old woman, you're quite the fierce one." Hunter J said.
"Do you want to get beat up again?" Chairperson Erma asked as Giovanni and Hunter J flinched.
"N-no…I'm fine, really! We'll, er…go quietly." Hunter J said as Wendy, Keith and Sven came into the cavernous area, hauling away the grunts and nefarious duo.
Kellyn quickly gave Red a call to get an update on the situation, and the usually silent man answered.
"Kellyn, just the man I wanted to talk to. How'd it go with J and Giovanni?" Red asked as Blue shouted in the background.
"Woah, you actually talk?!" Green asked as Kellyn chuckled.
"Good Red, thanks to the help of Kris, my mom and Pokémon, those two are done with. How's the damage in Kanto?" Kellyn asked.
"Most of the cities aren't super bad, a couple of them aren't doing too good, but there's already Ranger Union employees helping with repairs and the like. As for the goons attacking the mainland, we've rounded quite a few of them up thanks to the Area Rangers and Top Rangers." Red said.
"Wow, that's quick, sounds good Red, keep me posted!" Kellyn said as he hanged up.
"Well…my house isn't really habitable at the moment, what do we do?" Kris asked.
"Simple, you two can stay at one of the luxurious hotels in Almia!" Chairperson Erma said.
"That's true…plus Hunter J's been caught so I'm certain I'll have to…go back to Almia…" Kellyn said.
"I'll visit you every day then!" Kris said.
"Actually…it looks like Kellyn has a much better idea!" Chairperson Erma said as Kellyn smiled.
"I do…Kris, how about you and I stay at the hotel and once your house is fixed, I can live with you! Then we can visit my mom often and not have her worry!" Kellyn said.
"I'd love to visit her, but…will we be staying be in the same room?" Kris asked as Kellyn blushed.
"Y-yes, is that okay?" Kellyn asked.
"Of course it is, what are we doing here for? Espeon, can we go right now?" Kris asked.
'Sure! Looks like you two are going to get hitched reaaaaal soon!" Espeon said.
"That sounds good to me, Espeon, take us to Almia!" Kellyn said.
Espeon teleported the three to Almia and they went into one of the snazziest hotel in Almia, and while Chairperson Erma bid the two farewell at the lobby as they went up to their room, soon reaching the door as Kellyn put Espeon in its Pokéball so it can sleep.
"Kris, are you still sore from that battle too?" Kellyn asked.
"Yeah...you're hurting too!" Kris said.
"Yup, but that's okay, we can snuggle together in bed for some comfort, how does that sound?" Kellyn asked as Kris smirked.
"I'm ready for that, let's go!" Kris said.
Kellyn and Kris excitedly went inside their room, ready to snuggle the night away and enjoy their lives with one another now that evil was stopped.
