Writing is already hard, but writing a nonverbal dialog sucks!
Here is what I was trying to convey the dragons to be saying when Hiccup and Merida met them in the clearing:
["Stay behind me," Hiccup instructed as he pulled her behind him and backed up slowly from the clearing.
That is the one who rides you.
Yes. He's most curious. Slipping over the boulder he grabbed Hiccup with retracted teeth and pulled the pair into the clearing.
"Crash course in dragon training?"
"You're respectful, nonthreatening, and unafraid."
"All at once?"
I don't understand why you stay with him. Does he try to control you?
He's my brother. I influence him as much as he influences me.
And the female?
His mate.
She's timid. She prowled closer. Then sniffed Hiccup's leg. I understand trusting him I suppose, but do you trust her?
Hiccup sidestepped her, staying between the two, and dropped into a defensive position.
"I thought ye said to not be threatening?"
"Usually. But I also said I'd protect you. I don't know her intentions and she's not getting near you until I do."
Ooo, he's a protective one.
She hasn't been around our kind long.
So she fears us?
Something like that. She'd be stupid not to.
Her attention was returned to the pair.
Is he challenging me?
She is his mate.
But you trust him despite that?
The razorwhip fluttered down from the tree and landed on Merida's shoulders. I like her! She dropped a little further to cling to the woman's back.
Humans hurt our kind.
Not these ones. I fly because of him.
An exception I would think. She approached Hiccup. I will...try to trust him.
Thank you. Toothless showed her how friendly Hiccup was.
It is hard to trust someone when they and their loved ones don't trust you. She indicated Merida.
Stop that. Toothless bopped Hiccup's head. Let her approach.
"Well, Toothless wants me to trust her," he grumbled, rubbing his head with the hand that had just been on Toothless.
"And what does she want?"
"Are you going to be okay if I answer that?"
"I can do this." Hiccup held her as she extended her hand to the Light Fury.
They will have my trust. This is...nice. Merida was rubbing up her snout. You think they can help me?
They will help you.
This will hurt… She bared her injury and was surprised by their immediate attention.
.
You were right. This will hurt.
What is that concoction?
You said you would trust them.
I said I would try.
"Oh for the love of Thor!"
Weapon! She watched as the blade pierced his skin. He just…
It will be alright.
She watched the woman bandage the man.
"Your turn."
Alright… She closed her eyes waiting for the pain. A branch to chew was appreciated. She could feel the constant weight of his head and paws on her to sooth her. His tones breathed into her ears. His calm seeping into her despite the pain. She'd have to be treated again, but the wound would close this time. She could hardly move and was glad when he curled up with her and oblivion met her. ]
