Chapter Eleven: Masters of the Game.
Schneizel's counter had Lelouch biting his lip. It was a legitimate counter and a smart move. Science was on his side and Lelouch had to agree. Rivalz did have a genetic advantage over humanity. The others did too though he wasn't too sure.
'Guys, I could use a hand,' Rivalz's voice echoed telepathically.
'Keep stressing we're not a threat,' Suzaku's voice said.
'Schneizel pretty much acknowledged that the Justice League has no intentional ill will towards Britannia or to humanity,' Lelouch's mind voice rang out. 'He's playing long term, forcing people to consider a threat they couldn't comprehend before. Extinction.'
'But it's crazy, it's not like we're going to start some kind of crazy breeding program,' thought Kallen, though she stood next to Lelouch in the clubhouse.
'No but...Schneizel isn't wrong about how children you have will be at an evolutionary advantage,' thought Lelouch.
'Can the Starheart's power even work like that?' Suzaku questioned.
'Alan Scott had children but for all I know they are dead,' Tohdoh's mind voice echoed.
'Clock's ticking,' Rivalz interjected.
'As much as it pains me to admit it Suzaku was right, keep the subject on how the Justice League is not a threat to the lives and liberty of the Britannian people,' thought Lelouch. 'That our only goal is peace and liberty for all humanity. That now that they have come to understand the fear of great power they can look at the Japanese and now see themselves where they could not before. As human beings, as equals.'
'That can still be played against us,' J'onn's voice said.
'I know but for now it's all we can do and I have other things on my mind,' thought Lelouch.
'The incident at Ashford, those people,' Suzaku's voice said.
'I did recognize them,' Tohdoh's voice said. 'They're part of Savage's Secret Society. Lawrence and Paula Crock and Clifford DeVoe. Alias the Sportsmaster, the Tigress, and the Thinker. I cannot stress enough why you should not face them alone. Take the boy and get out, DeVoe is most likely already counting on you to attack and has Sportsmaster and Tigress waiting.'
'He's not alone,' thought Kallen.
'Do not underestimate them, especially DeVoe,' thought Tohdoh. 'He was one Savage's best tacticians.'
'What about the other two?' asked Suzaku.
'Sportsmaster and Tigress are a deadly pair,' said Tohdoh. 'Tigress is a skilled hunter and a savage fighter. And Sportsmaster is one of the most skilled warriors I've faced in my lifetimes, despite what his appearance and weapons might suggest.'
'Which means?' asked Kallen.
'His weapons aren't conventional, they take the form of...sports equipment, hence the name,' Tohdoh's mind voice answered. 'Exploding balls, bats that act as bazookas, things like that. Its that unassuming form that gets his foes to drop their guard. Suzaku, he will be going after you. He and Alan were bitter foes. And even with the power of the Ring Alan would struggle against him.'
'They're still only human,' thought Lelouch, cutting off the connection.
Kallen followed suit, not liking the look in Lelouch's eyes.
"Lelouch..."
"Take Rolo off of school grounds and keep him safe," said Lelouch. "I'll meet with Suzaku and we'll deal with the enemy here."
"Lelouch..."
"Now!" he growled.
While Kallen had never been one to take such talk from anyone, let alone an exiled prince, her mind went to Rolo and he was innocent in all this. And she was supposed to protect the innocent. While it looked that Lelouch was only interested in punishing the guilty.
'Lelouch you are no help,' thought Rivalz.
"At a loss for words Superman?" asked Schneizel, an amused grin on his face.
'Well time to see if my nerves really are made of steel,' he thought.
"I said what I needed to say, that the Justice League is here to protect those who cannot protect themselves regardless of nationality," said Superman. "To encourage positive change in this world and stop the madness Emperor Charles preaches. You talk about how my children, who aren't even born yet I might add, and how we and other metahumans are going to take over the world. You know the thing you're trying to do with the Empire right now. And that's it, now, what's happening now. You might not want people to see it but the Empire is in the wrong. People might not see it because they're not forced to live in the kind of conditions that the Japanese are forced to live in but that doesn't mean they're not being used, they just don't realize it. The Emperor doesn't care about them, he considers his subjects nothing but fools whom he can lead down any path he wants. Even a path that makes them no better...than savages."
With that final word Superman cut a glare at Schneizel, whose eyes narrowed sharply.
'He's one of them,' Rivalz deduced, passing it to anyone listening on the link.
'Then he must know about Lelouch and the rest of you at the school by now,' J'onn's voice rang out.
'Lelouch closed his end of the link and so did Kozuki and Kururugi,' Tohdoh's voice cut in. 'Try and finish this and get to the school. That foolish boy is going after DeVoe and the others.'
'I'll do what I can,' thought Rivalz.
"I wasn't born on this planet, but I was raised on it none the less," said Superman. "I was raised in Britannia, I had Britannian parents who loved me despite me not being one of them. When they saw what I could do they realized how dangerous the world would be for me. They were afraid I'd be rejected by the world or used by it. They knew that people could be afraid of the unknown, the things that they can't explain, and what follows that fear tends to be hatred. So I lived life quietly afraid of revealing myself but as I did I realized I was letting something horrible happen when I had the power to stop it. So I'm not afraid, not any more, and you can try and spin my presence on this planet as causing a major evolutionary upset or whatever but the fact is I'm here. And what's more I'm not here to hurt people, any people regardless of nationality, I'm an alien who soars so high into the sky I can't see boarders or nations I only see one earth, my home. And I will do anything to protect it and the people who inhabit it from those who would do it harm. No matter who they be, Britannian or Japanese, noble or...savage."
As he finished that sentence an explosion on the other side of the Settlement was heard. Without another word Superman flew off into the direction of the explosion, not noticing the slight smirk on Schneizel's face.
Cornelia gritted her teeth as she was thrown back to the ground. Struggling to get up she cursed. Even her toughest drill instructors in the Academy were nothing compared to Barda. Joining her on the ground and struggling to get back to their feet were Nonette and Euphie, who insisted on joining them. Because she had apparently awakened to her full power Euphie was doing slightly better than Cornelia and Nonette, in spite of the years of experience the two had on her.
"Damn it, you're a beast," groaned Nonette.
"I will take that as a compliment," said Barda. "But you're all exhausted, time to rest. There are springs I like to use from time to time, good for relaxing the muscles."
"Alien hot springs," Euphie sighed. "But I wonder how I get out of..."
In a flash of light the suit she wore vanished and her hair returned to its natural pink color.
"Oh, I guess that makes it easier," said Euphie.
"I'm sure Fate will explain better the next time we speak to him," said Barda, her armor retracting back into her crimson bikini-like outfit which she then began to remove. "But for now we bathe and relax."
Barda, now nude led the three tired women to the hot springs and was the first to enter the hot water. The other three stripped as well and joined her in the pool.
"Ah that feel so much better," said Nonette.
"Wonderful," sighed Euphie.
"Finally," Cornelia groaned as she hit the water the hardest.
Cornelia was the one whom Barda pushed the hardest out of all three of them. Even after Cornelia swore she'd side with Lelouch, though she made it quite clear she was only doing this so she could protect her siblings. She still didn't believe in this story about a shadowy immortal running the Empire with her father as a front. But she did acknowledge that her father's policies as well as the presence of H.I.V.E. was a threat to Euphemia and thus to Lelouch and Nunnally. This satisfied Barda for now though she none the less sought to drill Cornelia into the ground until she was willing to serve Lelouch without question.
She knew it was no different than how she had been brought up by...her, but it was for the sake of the boy who was her son.
"You're progressing well with your power," said Barda, resting her arms on the edges of the pool. "But if we're to believe Fate your true power stems from chaos. Possibly rage is what will allow it to come in full."
"I have no trouble getting angry," said Cornelia. "Trust me I've been angry all day."
"Yes, and it shows in your sloppy form towards the end," said Barda. "You started well at the beginning but in the end you let your temper get the better of you. It makes you powerful but it also makes you unfocused. It can be the flame that gives you strength from within but must be controlled."
"You know I am an experienced soldier," grumbled Cornelia.
"Yes but I have a few centuries on you," said Barda, a proud smirk on her face.
"You look good for a gal your age," said Nonette.
"Perks of being a New God," said Barda.
"What does that mean exactly?" asked Euphie. "I mean, what qualifies a New God?"
"Sounds kind of presumptuous to me," said Cornelia.
"Says the supposed Goddess of Victory," said Nonette.
"The origins of my people are long and storied," said Barda. "But if you were to ask me to turn water into wine the answer would be no. We're long lived and endowed with great power, so we're gods in the classical sense you may expect from the gods of your ancestors."
"Don't tell me they were real right?" asked Cornelia.
"Quite a few of them were," said Barda.
"And were they what you'd call the Old Gods?" asked Euphie.
"No, the Old Gods I refer to are ones you would never have heard of," said Barda. "As I said it is a long story."
"A story you intend to tell Lelouch and Nunnally," said Cornelia. "For someone who declares herself as their mother you seem to hide quite a bit of your past from them."
"Because unlike you I am truly ashamed of what I've done," said Barda. "Though perhaps you can understand the guilt in my heart when you realize that all you've been is the pawn of a monster. The Emperor would throw you away and find another toy to wind up. You're meaningless to him, all of his people are, especially for those as sweet as Nunnally. I could not believe someone who suffered as her could still be so kind. And she was so happy when she was healed that..."
"What?" yelled Cornelia, rising up in the water. "Nunnally...can...she can walk and see again?"
"Her sight and legs were restored though she does tend to keep her walking to a minimum, a bit of lingering trauma that even Mother Box cannot heal," said Barda.
From where their clothes were laid a Ping came from the small computer machine Barda held.
"I know you try your best Mother Box, I wasn't criticizing," said Barda.
"You actually talk to your machine?" asked Cornelia.
"She is alive," said Barda.
Another ping was heard.
"And she doesn't always take to well to being called a machine," said Barda.
"Seriously?" asked Nonette.
"And...'she' healed Nunnally?" asked Euphie.
"She did, healing is one of Mother Box's many abilities," said Barda. "And the two of them seemed to have a natural rapport with one another."
"They do?" asked Euphie, truly intrigued.
"Yes, you see Mother Box gives unconditional love to all those who have access to her," said Barda. "The same way Nunnally has only ever been so kind and sweet to just about anyone and anything. That is truly rare, for any species. Particularly humans."
"And the so called New Gods are better?" said Cornelia, her irritation present.
"Some more so than others," said Barda.
"So if you're going to tell Lelouch about your people and history does that mean we'll get to hear it too?" asked Nonette.
"You have yet to swear fealty to my son," said Barda.
Cornelia once more grew irritated with how Barda so casually referred to Lelouch as her son. But given who apparently the warrior woman from the stars had guarded and raised Lelouch as her own, Cornelia could not properly argue against the case.
"But...because we are in similar standing Cornelia, I believe you could at least become a kindred spirit of sorts," said Barda. "And at least you have the wisdom to know that there is danger for the ones you love in Britannia as is. But how much you are to be told is up to Lelouch. He is the leader of this cause, and I as well as his mother am a soldier under his command. Your fate is in his hands. Euphemia I feel he will protect but he may yet still harbor doubt and suspicion of you Cornelia. Imprisonment would be the likely fate for you till you prove your loyalty. Though, recall my promise. If my children are harmed by you, or by you Knight of Nine, your lives are forfeit. As are the lives of your men, including your lover Guilford."
"What?" yelled Cornelia, a blush on her face. "Guilford is my...he is not my lover he is my knight."
"Keep telling yourself that Nelly," Nonette said snidely while Euphie blushed.
"He initiated contact with the League to rescue you from Hugo Strange, risking disgrace and death by going against his lord and master Charles," said Barda. "Only love gives one the courage to do such a thing. I should know, I have felt that love, it set me free. Free from...who once was. And..."
Barda was interrupted by a loud ping from Mother Box. To the other three bathers this meant nothing but Barda's eyes widened she she leapt out of the pool with lightning speed and ran to Mother Box.
"He's doing what?" yelled Barda.
Mother Box pinged in response which didn't do her mood any favors.
"Is it Lelouch?" cried Euphie, standing up in worry.
"There's a breach in security at his school," said Barda. "The enemy is there and he's about to engage."
"Does he have support?" asked Cornelia rising as well.
Barda glared at Cornelia, and before any could react she ran into the water and grabbed Cornelia by the neck.
"Did you know about this?" she yelled.
Nonette attempted to strike at Barda but was only kicked aside for her trouble, Barda's focus still on Cornelia, whom she held up over her head.
"Barda please, we didn't even know Lelouch was alive let alone that he was Batman," said Euphie, a light white glow radiating from her.
Barda glared over at the young princess and began to calm herself and released Cornelia. She then got out of the pool once more and quickly began to dress.
"Wait...I'm coming too," said Cornelia, trying to catch her breath.
"Out of the question," said Barda as she readied her outfit.
"You cannot expect me to nothing while my sibling is...
"You did it before," said Barda. "You can do it now."
"No," yelled Cornelia. "I will not stand by and allow them to come to danger again."
Barda cut a glare back at Cornelia.
"Now or never Princess, make your choice," said Barda. "Swear to obey Lelouch's leadership and forsake Britannia under the control of Charles. Because going out there to face Lelouch's enemies know that your father, your entire Empire, is counted among them. You will be branded a traitor and hunted by your countrymen. But perhaps Lelouch will deign himself to allow you back into his graces in spite of your sins and failures."
The self-proclaimed Goddess of Victory locked eyes with the New God Barda, their wills matching.
"I will," said Cornelia.
Barda stared deep into Cornelia's eyes. She knew lies, she knew evil, but in Cornelia's eyes she could only see a righteous kind of fury.
"Very well, dress yourself quickly," said Barda. "You and I will go to Lelouch. He won't be happy you know his secret but when he sees you grovel before him I'm sure he won't mind. Or he could have me take you prisoner. Either way you're no longer an obstacle."
"I'm coming too," said Nonette. "If something bad is happening as a Knight of the Round I have a duty to protect my fellow Britannians. And as Nelly's friend I am not going to let her go with someone as clearly dangerous as you alone. Even if it is to lead her to her brother."
Barda also looked over to Euphemia, who was glowing white once more with the power she had awakened. It looked as if she'd be going in force, with plenty of gifts for her adopted son.
Another Ping came from Mother Box.
"What now?" asked Cornelia.
"It appears there's another issue happening in the Settlement," said Barda. "One perhaps you could be of help Knight of Nine."
Arriving on the scene of the disturbance Rivalz saw a familiar Knightmare Frame opening fire on civilians. Increasing his speed he dove down and knocked many of the bullets it fired into the ground and evacuated the people from the block. He made sure to get everyone in the block away from where he knew the fight would be.
"Since when does the Britannian Military open fire on its own civilians?" he yelled.
His only answer came in the form of a green colored energy beam fired from a cannon in the Knightmare's arm. It was powerful enough to force him into a nearby wall. When he fought the machine before its weapons were enough to knock him back but never did much damage. This time, Rivalz felt truly ill when the beam struck him, coughing up blood as he straightened himself inside the rubble as his veins began to show.
"What...what the hell?" he coughed.
Before he could fully comprehend the silver Knightmare, Metallo, leapt into the building.
News copters capturing the battle were broadcasting to the entire Area. Even to the debate area where Guilford watched it happening on a screen in the van Milly was using. He recognized the Knightmare instantly.
"What the hell?" he yelled.
Alongside him Darlton saw and was equally furious. He got on his radio with that same fury.
"I want to know who deployed the Metallo without authorization," he yelled.
Milly heard this and turned towards the two men.
"Excuse me, General Darlton are you saying that this Knightmare is property of the Britannian Military?" she asked, her phone hidden to record everything.
Guilford took her by the arm and drew her into the van, kicking out Olsen and anyone else in the van.
"Turn off anything you're using to record this conversation Ashford, now," said Guilford.
"Why not just kill me and get it done with?" she countered. "Seems like you've got no problem with..."
"That machine did not launch on my, Darlton's, or any orders of anyone I am aware of," said Guilford. "I don't know why it's out there attacking civilians."
"Or armed with what I'm guessing is the Kryptonite Prince Schneizel was hoping to ambush Superman with today?" she said.
Guilford narrowed his eyes at Milly but couldn't counter. Of course Superman would tell her. He had done his research after seeing Superman's face un-blurred. He was Rivalz Cardemonde a student at Ashford Academy. Out of respect for what he had done for Cornelia, Guilford never pressed the lead. As for hat green energy may well have been Kryptonite but he had no idea Schneizel had weaponized it so soon. After the security breach which cost him the pendant Guilford thought that was it. But...an idea came to his mind. One he dared not speak before a reporter.
'Could...could this be Prince Schneizel's attempt to test the Kryptonite?' he thought. 'Was that always the plan and the pendant was just bait? But that would only work if...if he believed there was a chance someone from inside would reach out to the Justice League. He...he might even already know about Princess Euphemia and Cornelia's conditions. Damn him and now he's putting our citizens at risk.'
"So...what's the story?" said Milly.
"There is none," said Guilford. "Stay out of this Ashford, this is a military matter."
"I'd say it's a job for Superman," said Milly.
"Not if the Kryptonite does what Prince Schneizel believes it can," said Guilford.
"This is wonderful," yelled Lloyd, looking over the field data from the Metallo.
Cecile could only stay back and watch in silence, disgusted by what she was taking part in, even if she was bound at a chair. Kewell Sorsei of the Purebloods had forced his way into the lab along with several other armed soldiers. They demanded the Metallo be outfitted with a Kryptonite power cell immediately. Lloyd jumped at the chance but Cecile refused, not having been told of any authorized refit. For her trouble she was tied to a chair as a small mercy as Lloyd helped set things up. Once it was done Kewell took out the Knightmare and began to reek havoc in the Settlement to draw out Superman.
"The Kryptonite power cell is working at least ten times better than the Sakuradite one," Lloyd continued. "And Prince Schneizel's theory was correct, Superman is vulnerable to it."
"Lloyd for the love of god stop this," Cecile yelled.
"Be quiet," yelled a male soldier who pistol whipped Cecile so hard she fell to the ground, still bound in her chair.
"Enough," yelled Villetta, kneeling down to help Cecile up and tend to her wound. "Ms. Croomey, it is best if you remain silent. If you do not wish to be a part of this operation then this is the best way to ensure you will not be held accountable for your actions if we fail."
"But why? You're attacking our own people," Cecile asked.
"That is a...regrettable sacrifice," said Villetta. "But if we can destroy Superman, one of the mightiest of the Justice League, we can reclaim the honor of the Purebloods and of the whole Britannian Military. As well as demonstrate to the other freaks that Britannians, not metahumans or aliens, are the strongest people on the face of the Earth."
As Villetta said her lines inside she was torn. This was against everything she wanted when she enlisted in the military. She wanted to serve her Empire and become rewarded with nobility for her service. When these metahuman creatures appeared she thought she'd get her big chance to defeat a great enemy of the Empire and become a hero to her nation. But the efforts of H.I.V.E. and the sheer power of the Justice League made that seem like an impossible goal.
But this Kryptonite seemed to be the edge that the Purebloods needed. She only wished she were feeling better about it.
As she and the others turned their eyes to the combat data, Villetta thought she heard something that sounded like thunder for a moment, even though there was perfect weather today.
Mother Box had informed him of the incidents happening in the city but Lelouch ignored her. Once Kallen had gotten Rolo off of campus he contacted Suzaku and the two met to initiate their attack.
"After what happened to Rolo's parents the school cancelled all classes," said Lelouch. "DeVoe is expecting us."
"Sensei said that Sportsmaster fought Alan Scott before so he's bound to have a way to counteract my ring," said Suzaku.
Lelouch hit a part of the wall of the which gave way to reveal a secret cache of Bat gear, a sword included.
"You have these at the school?" asked Suzaku.
"I always expected that the school might become a battleground," said Lelouch. "I don't think we have time to go over a majority of the equipment."
"I made sure to watch for what you used and how," said Suzaku. "The belts are the same right?"
"Yes," said Lelouch.
"Then I should be alright," said Suzaku. "But shouldn't we wait for support from Sensei and the others."
"Rivalz's having trouble with that Knightmare," said Lelouch. "Anyone who can will go support him. Kallen has Rolo with her so for now it's you and I. Even if you don't plan to use your ring let me take Sportsmaster. You go after Tigress, I'm sure that's the reverse of how DeVoe would have placed us."
"And what if he figured out that's how you would figure it?" asked Suzaku.
"Then in that case he'd..."
Lelouch could not finish as both he and Suzaku were vanished in a flash of light.
"...do something to ensure we were placed where we wants us," Lelouch finished.
By the time he did he was in the halls of the school's sub-basement. A veritable maze in the dark that was easy to get lost in.
"At least I know I'm right," said Lelouch.
He was without his suit but that did not mean he was defenseless. He had been trained to use the darkness. To rely on his other senses when he couldn't use his eyes. Training which paid off as he dove out of the way of an oncoming arrow.
From above a masked woman smirked, this could be fun.
Suzaku appeared in the gym where a man dressed in sports themed body armor and a hockey mask stood waiting at the center. He held a baseball bat in one hand and juggled three baseballs in the other.
"So you must be Sportsmaster," said Suzaku, making his Green Lantern outfit appear, his borrowed utility belt and sword still on. "Did you find us because me?"
"Don't flatter yourself...Kururugi," said Sportsmaster. "Surprised you used old Scott's name but hey it was nostalgic. The big boss knew about you guys since day one."
Suzaku gasped at that revelation, Savage knew about Lelouch and them ever since they started. Then why now were they being attacked at the school?
'I have to focus,' Suzaku thought. 'Sensei said Sportsmaster was one of the strongest fighters he'd ever seen. And if he and the real Alan Scott were enemies he would have means to counter the Starheart's powers.'
Sportsmaster threw up the three balls and quickly struck them with his bat. Recalling Tohdoh's words about how Sportsmaster would disguise his weapons as sports equipment and leapt back as the balls struck, revealing they were in fact grenades. Suzaku had put up a protective shield of green energy around his person but some shrapnel from the grenade balls got through, if only minor bits. This caught Suzaku by surprise since only plant matter seemed immune to his power.
"Surprised?" said Sportsmaster. "A little something H.I.V.E worked up. A chemical compound based on plant matter."
"Your weapons and armor are covered in it no doubt," said Suzaku.
"Correct," said Sportsmaster.
"So be it," said Suzaku, drawing the sword. "I can fight without it."
"Let's just see how well," said Sportsmaster.
Suzaku struck first and his sword clashed with Sportsmaster's bat. The clash taught Suzaku a lot about the type of man he was fighting. A true fighter, well trained and determined to win. Sportsmaster drew back and quickly attempted to spin around to attack once Suzaku was off balance. But Suzaku dove as Sportsmaster turned and rolled forward as his enemy attacked. He quickly attempted to strike forward but Sportsmaster's hockey padded right arm guard created its own Blaze Luminous shield which guarded him from Suzaku's blade.
Suzaku drew back, careful of his foe.
'He can defend against most of my attacks and the gadgets Lelouch uses and the chemical he's coated in protects him from my ring,' Suzaku thought. 'For all I know he coated the entire gym in the same material to avoid me using my power on the building to try and give myself the edge. This was well planned, but Sensei knows that they're here so he should be on the way with back up. I just need to hold out until then and try and determine his weaknesses.'
Barda had been able to boom Nonette close enough to the Hanger as to avoid detection. She made her way in the rest of the way covertly, silently taking out any of the rogue soldiers she could find until she came to the hanger where her Ystin was parked.
Throwing in a smoke grenade ahead of her she dove in, confused gunfire firing in her direction. But she managed to get to her shining Knightmare and quickly entered the cockpit. After activating it she drove off, tearing off the doors as she did so.
The Purebloods would get theirs later, but for now she had to aid Superman, as according to Barda's conditions to ensure the safety of Nelly and Euphie. She just hoped she wasn't too late.
In his office DeVoe looked at the reports of the Metallo's battle with Superman to the battles between his pawns and the other two Leaguers. Kozuki had taken the boy Rolo off campus and if anything she would soon be chaffed to enter the fray. As would Hawkman and the other members of the League.
DeVoe chuckled as he moved a piece on his chessboard, initiating the next phase of his plan.
Kallen had taken Rolo to the park. She knew he was still in rough shape. Buying him an ice cream cone she took him to a secluded bench and sat down with him. He had barely said anything the whole time, and she knew what he was feeling. Reaching into her bag she pulled out a photo she had kept with her always. She gave it to Rolo who took it with some curiosity. Looking down he saw an image of a younger Kallen, as well as her mother, and a young man with brown hair.
"That's my brother Naoto," said Kallen. "He's...no longer with us. Our father wasn't around too much so he was kind of the man of the house. Losing him was hard on me and...my mother."
"Oh...I'm sorry," said Rolo, handing the photo back to her.
"The damage took a...a bit toll on the both of us and...I didn't realize how badly it was hurting my mother in particular," said Kallen. "My own reaction was...less than stellar."
"What...what did you do?" he asked.
"I...I fell in with a rough crowd," said Kallen. "It got a little harry but now...now I'm trying to fix things with my mother and make things better for us."
"And...are things better?" he asked.
"They're coming slowly," said Kallen. "I guess that's the thing, things will get better but it's going to take time. You're not going to get over this easily. It'll be tough but...but I wanna be there to help. So does Lelouch, you see...he's...adopted. He lost his birth parents a while back."
"He did?" asked Rolo.
"Yes," said Kallen.
It was the truth in a sense. His mother had been killed and Emperor Charles could hardly be called a father so he might as well be dead.
"When he saw what happened and saw you...it really struck with him," said Kallen. "He managed to find people he could count on and help him come to terms with his loss. And now he wants to do the same with you. He might not show it a lot and it might not seem like he's always really there but...he does want to help and he does understand what you're going through."
"Is he...your boyfriend?" asked Rolo.
"He...he's just a friend," said Kallen.
She didn't really know what to think of Lelouch half the time. As the Batman he was an effective combatant and commander, when he wasn't brutally beating the corrupt in front of already traumatized victims. As Lelouch when at school he came off as a sort of playboy. As Lelouch unmasked with the League he wasn't so different from the Batman. He had so many masks she wondered if she'd ever really know the real Lelouch. Or if there was a real Lelouch at all.
"That foolish boy," groaned Tohdoh as he donned the mask of Hawkman. "When we hit the ground STRIPE, Red Tornado, and Fate will go help Superman. I'll fly straight to the school to secure Batman and Green Lantern. Shazam is currently with a civilian boy under her care so for the security of her identity we should consider her indisposed. Any word on Barda's location."
"She's on the move, Mother Box informed her about what Lelouch was doing so expect her to be on the scene," said Scott. "And if anything you should try not to get between her and the enemy."
Scott then opened up a Boom Tube but before he, J'onn, STRIPE, Dr. Fate, and Hawkman could enter a communique came in from Oracle.
"We may have more trouble on the horizon," said Scott.
His strength and speed diminished the green energy weapons of the Metallo, Rivalz still did all he could to fight on. Having gone back to the streets and in the sunlight, he skirted through to avoid the blasts of the Kryptonite beam weapons while he soaked up power.
"Damn it will you stop firing this is part of the Britannian city," Superman yelled. "You know the part you're supposed to protect. If I didn't evacuate it earlier innocent people would be in danger."
"Necessary sacrifices for the ultimate good and glory of Britannia," yelled Kewell's voice from inside the Metallo. "To prove that Britannians, not aliens and metahumans, are the strongest of all people on the face of this Earth."
"And this is what you want to do with your strength?" yelled Superman. "To terrorize and destroy?"
"That is the right of the strong," yelled Kewell, striking out with the Metallo's fist. "If you were truly a son of Britannia, adopted or not, you would understand that."
"I was raised...to believe differently," Superman groaned as he caught the fist, his strength still not fully returned.
"Yes, I heard," said Kewell. "Raised by traitors who instead of turning you over to the Empire and instead hid you and gave you this weakling's philosophy. When I find out who they were, if they're still alive I will see to their execution personally. If not I'll smash their graves."
That made Rivalz furious and with all his strength he threw up the fist of the Metallo and delivered a blow to its chest. Strong enough to force it backwards, and to crack the armor, revealing a green glow, which poured over Rivalz.
Rivalz doubled over at the greater exposure from the Kryptonite. The Metallo was about to deliver a fatal blow when it was struck by the blade of the Ystin. The shining Knightmare then struck again before the Metallo could react, taking out its leg.
As she covered Superman, a motorcycle rode up and its rider, Guilford, grabbed Superman and drew him away from the Kryptonite.
"You alright?" he asked.
"I...I will be," said Superman. "Just need to soak up a few rays. What's the story with..."
"The Purebloods have gone rogue," said Guilford. "Or...at least that's what it looks like. But...something else is going on."
"What?" asked Superman.
As his abilities began to come back to him Rivalz looked into the sky and saw...
"Flying Samurai?" he said, legitimately puzzled.
Barda, Euphie, and Cornelia landed on the outside of Ashford.
"Something was able to disrupt the Tube," said Barda. "We should be inside."
"We can still get in the old fashioned way," said Cornelia. "Euphie you get back to..."
"My god," Euphie said, pointing up.
The other two women looked up and saw several armored figures flying from on high. They appeared dressed in classical samurai armor but flew with rocket powered wings.
"Another JLF attack?" asked Cornelia.
Mother Box pinged.
"According to Mother Box these are machines," said Barda. "This is no coincidence. We've walked into a trap."
Several of the robotic samurai landed and drew their blades. The blades began to glow and in perfect unison they slashed out sending waves of energy at the three women. Barda quickly grabbed Euphie and Cornelia and drew her Mega Rod which propelled the three of them out of the way as the waves hit. However this was anticipated as another samurai android struck out at Barda. She had blocked the blow but was none the less forced to let go of the siblings.
As she feel Euphie became compelled by some strange instinct and she caught her sister and coordinated herself in the air catch onto a nearby streetlight and leap off with the skill of an expert gymnast.
As this happened Cornelia could only seethe in anger. Not at Euphemia's ability but at her own weakness. All of her failures had been thrown into her face of late by Barda had been building up her fury for some time. Her failure to protect Lady Marianne, her failure to stand by her siblings in their time of need, her failure to find them after the invasion, her failure to keep Euphie safe in this time of uncertainty. And now these robotic toys were keeping her from going to her brother's aid. To keep her from making up for her many failure to him and Nunnally. It made her so furious all she wanted to do was to tear these creatures, and whoever was threatening her siblings now, with all the ferocity of a wild, screeching...
"Hawk!" Cornelia yelled, a crimson glow about her like there was a white glow around Euphie when she transformed.
Barda and Euphie were slightly blinded by the red hot glow though the machines were not. One drew close to Euphie, sword raised, but before it struck a white and red blur intercepted the machine and tore off its arms. A clawed gloved red hand gripped the sword and proceeded to slash through the robot before charging out at the next one.
When Euphie and Barda could see again they saw how Cornelia had transformed. She wore a red and white outfit with a segmented cape, clawed gloves, a bird-like face mask, and her normally purple hair was blood red. She growled like a wild beast as she tore through the enemies, either with her clawed gloves or with the sword she took. She tore through the armor easily and her strength was on par with those of the machines.
'Perhaps she will be of use after all,' Barda thought with a smirk as she entered the fray with Euphemia tentatively following behind.
In the sub-basement Lelouch had led Tigress on a merry chase. He had been able to dodge the arrows she continued to shoot at him. In her frustration she tried to pounce on him, scraping at his shoulder. But this was what Lelouch had been hoping for. As Scott always sought to instill in him, he should always be prepared. As such his clothes had special tech in his clothes. Once Tigress had compromised their integrity they delivered a flash of light which greatly pained Tigress given her night vision lenses in her mask.
Once he got the opportunity Lelouch slammed both his hands against her temples, discombobulating her. She tried to swipe at him but he grabbed her arm and delivered a powerful blow to it, snapping the bone.
"I bet you expected that without my suit I was defenseless," said Lelouch.
Tigress attempted to kick up at Lelouch, who now activated the emergency night vision contact lenses in his eyes, dodged. Before he moved to far he placed a small device made to look like one of the buttons from his sleeve onto her boot. As soon as she stepped down the vibrations sent a powerful electrical shock to her entire system. This allowed Lelouch to strike her down to her back. He gripped her leg and stared down at her.
"I'm sure you're a great hunter," said Lelouch. "You just chose the wrong prey. And the wrong hunting ground, but that's not what this school is. Right now...it's an operating table."
Lelouch snapped her leg in one fluid motion. He didn't stop at just one.
"And I'm the surgeon," he said.
Suzaku and Sportsmaster had continued to match each other blow for blow. Thanks to Lelouch's tools Suzaku could counter many of Sportsmaster's weapons. From the razor hockey pucks he countered with a series of Batarangs. A sonic mini-mine to counter a smoke grenade Birdie, taking out Sportsmaster's ears when the villain tried to take his eyes.
"Gotta admit you're pretty good kid," said Sportsmaster.
"You've got skills too," said Suzaku, being honest. "But why? Why are you working with a man like Savage?"
"Simple, he's the coach on the winning team," said Sportsmaster. "And the Sportsmaster and Tigress are all about winning."
"Then why did you kill the Halliburtons?" Suzaku asked.
"That little twerp out shot my lady at the fair," said Sportsmaster.
"That's it?" yelled Suzaku in absolute disgust.
"Like I said, my lady and I are all about winning," said Sportsmaster.
Ever since he got the power of the Lantern Suzaku had tried to keep his emotions in check. Even joining a stressful profession like the military he had sought to keep himself composed. Always afraid that he would hurt someone with his power, even if they were a bad person.
But Sportsmaster's reasoning so filled him with disgust, Suzaku could not see him as anything less than a monster to be put down. He had ruined an innocent boy's life for no reason other than the most minor of slights to his pride. That was unforgivable.
"Damn you," Suzaku yelled, charging out propelled by the power of the Lantern.
Sportsmaster dodged but he was not fast enough to completely dodge a deep slice to his side from Suzaku's blade. Suzaku then sliced at Sportsmaster's tendon, effectively forcing him to his knees.
"You know...Scott never did something like this," said Sportsmaster.
"I'm not Alan Scott," said Suzaku. "But...I'm not like you either."
"Yeah...you're a loser," said Sportsmaster, throwing a knife hidden in his boot.
Suzaku caught the blade, though it did cut his hand given how it was covered in the same material as all of Sportsmaster's weapons. Before Suzaku could react, the glass roof of the gym gave way as the battered image of a woman in a tiger mask fell.
"Paula," yelled Sportsmaster, attempting to run to his wife despite his bad leg.
When he did so a dark shadow came over him and all became dark.
"Lelouch are you..."
"I'm fine," his friend answered in a modulated voice.
"How did...how many suits do you have hidden around the school?" asked Suzaku.
"It doesn't matter," said Batman. "But...fifty-two. Now, we have work to do. Go out into the city, there's trouble that could use your power. Barda's outside the school with two newcomers. Tell her I'm alright and to focus on restoring some calm. I'll take DeVoe."
"You shouldn't go alone," said Suzaku.
"I have Mother Box, if they try to teleport somewhere else she can bring me back," said Batman. "Now, go we'll have a lot to talk about later. As for these two."
Mother Box opened a Boom Tube which took in Sportsmaster and Tigress into itself before vanishing.
"Where did you send them?" asked Suzaku.
"To the Watchtower holding cells," said Batman. "Scott has them fully automated and equipped to treat all injuries. I intend to have them interrogated later. They know where we are so we're essentially compromised. We'll have to leave the school and stay on the defensive. But once we get some information on the Secret Society we'll can take the offensive again."
"L...Batman," said Suzaku, addressing Lelouch by his code name. "Sportsmaster said Savage knew about you even when you first showed up saving me with the others."
Lelouch scowled beneath his mask as Suzaku flew off to help the situation in the city.
The robotic samurai had descended to the park where Kallen and Rolo had gone. When the began slashing their energy wave katana Kallen led Rolo out of the way. She couldn't transform into her hero form without exposing Rolo to the life. If she did that she'd be putting him in even more danger. Even though at this time that appeared to be impossible, especially when one samurai android appeared before them. Kallen dove to cover Rolo as it raised its sword. But the blow never came, thanks to the appearance of Martian Manhunter, who tore apart the robot. Rolo looked up to the green man in some awe before suddenly falling asleep.
"Rolo?" Kallen gasped.
"He is alright," said J'onn. "I merely telepathically induced sleep. Your power is needed, I will stay with the boy in your form in case he wakes early. Hawkman and the others are already at work. And once it's settled meet at your home, the school has been compromised."
"What?" asked Kallen.
"Batman and Green Lantern are alright," said J'onn. "But for now..."
"I get it, immediate emergency first," said Kallen. "Shazam!"
The lightning came down and she was thus transformed and flew off to meet the mysterious androids.
In DeVoe's office he removed two white pawns with one move of a black knight. As he made such a move Batman threw open the doors of the office.
"You're just in time," said DeVoe. "Early even according to my calculations."
Batman said nothing as he drew close to the desk.
"Yes, no small talk from you I suppose," said DeVoe. "A pity I'd love to discuss the architectural designs of your clubhouse on the moon."
That stopped Batman in his tracks.
"Yes, we're well aware of your base," said DeVoe. "At least one of them, I assume Hawkman's secrete cache of equipment from the JSB is where this support army of rabble you've been building is located. Even I haven't been able to deduce where it is. Dr. Fate's doing no doubt."
"You have all the answers don't you?" said Batman.
"It is my purpose to have all the answers," said DeVoe. "To determine the best strategy and what my opponent is going to do next. I fully expected you to have this school well stocked with emergency weapons for your convenience. And even with your emotions flared by your sense of sympathy for the boy your mind was focused. You adapted to the sudden transportation, your training allowed you to determine how best to counter Huntress in the dark, hidden tools in your clothing helped you get the best of her where you were quickly, and brutally, able to defeat her. Sportsmaster was nothing but a brute and met his fate as such."
"Do you think because you're smarter than them you won't get the exact same thing as they?" asked Batman.
"No, it is because you're more sentimental than most would believe," said DeVoe. "Your sister Nunnally is on your moon base isn't she...Lelouch?"
Lelouch bit his cheek as he reluctantly removed his mask.
"So Savage always knew where I was," said Lelouch. "Then why not make a move?"
"Until your rose as the Batman you were of no consequence, even if you were alive," said DeVoe. "But you have inspired him to say the least. Now you are of grave consequence."
"What does he want?" asked Lelouch. "Why..."
"Don't expect me to answer all your questions her and now dear boy," said DeVoe. "What fun would there be for you then?"
Lelouch drew a sharp Batarang but before he could threaten DeVoe with it, the faux principal turned his computer screen to show an image of Kallen's mother in her house resting comfortably.
"The technology you used to build that base has significant defenses," said DeVoe. "So for now your sister is safe from us. But the boy Rolo and dear Kallen's ill mother...well that's another story. Not to mention sweet Millicent. Or perhaps the mother of the missing Shirley would like to know what happened to her daughter? Oh you could take them but they're not rebels like the ones you found in Shinjuku. Nor are they soldiers like Cornelia who has had quite the transformation. A shame if that were made public knowledge. They'd all be hunted for the rest of their lives. And you cannot protect them forever. Not without depriving them of the freedom you want for all mankind."
Lelouch growled but none the less sheathed his weapon.
"So...your move," said Lelouch, noticing the chessboard.
"Oh I...or rather we have already won," said DeVoe. "This round at least, we shall play soon."
"Your henchmen are my prisoners," said Lelouch.
"And they may remain so for however long you wish," said DeVoe. "They served their purpose well."
Lelouch thought about the incidents going on in the city. The Metallo and the samurai androids that were attacking the city. With him and Suzaku fighting Sportsmaster and Tigress they couldn't go to Rivalz. Same with Kallen taking care of Rolo. But the rest of the League was coming in and would have been able to help Rivalz and then...
"This has been a series of distractions," said Lelouch. "The Metallo, Sportsmaster and Tigress, these flying..."
"Samuroids," said DeVoe. "My own little contribution. I've always admired Japanese culture, a shame that Britannian policy outlaws it. I simply must have a word with Brainwave about that. The man has no culture in his soul."
"Even the debate," said Lelouch, ignoring DeVoe. "You set it all up."
"Indeed but why?" asked DeVoe. "How about this, it'll be your homework for the weekend. Tell me why I arranged all these 'diversions' and I'll be sure you get top marks. I'll even put young Rolo in the more advanced classes. Oh don't be so shocked, I have no intention of having you or your friends depart the school. Given your ages it's reckless and goes against my principals as an educator. And as I said, you cannot protect the boy and all those others without not only exposing your secrets to depriving them of their freedoms."
"So you'd have us stay right were you can keep an eye on us," said Lelouch.
"Think of it as us keeping our eyes on one another," said DeVoe. "It's chess my boy and you may actually be a worthy opponent. I've been without one for some time now."
Lelouch cursed internally, DeVoe was a clever man he had to give him that. And while Lelouch would be against the idea of forcing innocents to have to uproot their lives he was still willing to do it.
"They'll always be hunted," said DeVoe, as if reading Lelouch's mind. "And do not believe we cannot find them even if you do not keep them with you. Keep that in mind boy."
Lelouch scowled but none the less nodded. He'd be sure to get DeVoe back for this. But for now as he had said, this allowed both of them to keep an eye on each other. He doubted that was DeVoe's only goal. This whole day was about something else entirely.
"I expect you in class on time and with the reason for my scheme on my desk by Monday at the latest," said DeVoe. "Till then, enjoy the weekend my boy."
The efforts of the Justice League soon got the Samuroid issue under control. Reports would blame the JLF for the attack and question whether or not the actions of the 'renegade' Pureblood faction were in league with them.
The Purebloods had been arrested by Guilford upon returning to the base with Nonette. Superman even handing over Kewell himself. The Metallo had been stripped of its kyrptonite core, much to Lloyd's dismay and frustration.
By the end of the day the news was filled with how people were thanking the Justice League for resolving the incident. By the time Lelouch saw the reports things were beginning to make some form of sense.
However there were other issues he had to worry about. Such as Cornelia and Euphemia whom Barda had revealed his identity to, now being in the Watchtower. Their arms were around Nunnally as the two of them bent down in tears upon seeing her, with her eyes open no less. Seeing that, the genuine emotion they held, told him they weren't a threat to her, and Cornelia was not the one who killed his mother.
As for Barda, and why she had done such a reckless action, with now the Knight of Nine aware of his identity even if that were a relatively minor issue, he could tell. Her bloody past was going to be revealed to him and Nunnally, and she was afraid she'd lose them. Hence why she sought one one whom they loved previously and who also had blood on her hands. A kindred spirit whose acceptance would give her hope that she wouldn't lose the love of her adopted children.
"About two months after you found us Nunnally got sick with a fever," said Lelouch, talking to Barda privately. "Mother Box was able to cure her but none the less you were worried about Nunnally so much you wouldn't let her out of your arms until she was healthy enough to plead to be put down. It was like you were afraid she'd break like glass if you let her out of your arms. That's when I knew you...that you weren't a threat to us. I can't tell how bloody your past is, perhaps even worse than what Cornelia has done, but that day is a part of your history as well. That's the part that matters to me. And Nunnally...honestly I don't think she could ever think a bad thought about anyone. We all...got a second chance. You and Scott from whatever you were running from. And we got to have a mother again."
Tears began to flow from Barda's eyes as she wrapped her arms around Lelouch, lifting him off his feet. Despite the slight discomfort he returned the hug in kind as best as he could.
The day had been rough and difficult for him. Full of fury and he feared defeat. But he had reaffirmed with Barda how she was his second mother and her fears about him rejecting her for her past were unwarranted. It was a small victory but it made him feel better none the less. Even if DeVoe's strategy had forced Lelouch to hold off on his next move, the simple comfort of Barda's love in this moment let him believe that he could overcome this.
And Barda had brought his half-sisters, with whom he was once so close, back to him. And with Cornelia he had access to the Britannian military, at least those who would follow her no matter what. That was a win for him, in so many ways.
He was in check for now, but he was determined to never allow himself to get to mate in this game against DeVoe.
"The actions of Kewell Sorsei and the Purebloods have left a black mark on the Britannian military," said Schneizel, a glass of wine in his hand. "Faith in the army and even the Empire has diminished in the hearts of the people. While the attack from what appears to be an Eleven blitz with advanced weaponry continues to make Britannians weary of Elevens. However the actions of Superman and the Justice League, arriving to defend those who doubted and feared them, have begun to stoke the fires of hope in their hearts. It all worked perfectly."
"Naturally my boy," said DeVoe, clinking his own wine glass with Schneizel's. "All the pieces did their work perfectly. Even the unexpected elements worked to our advantage."
"Yes, Cornelia and Euphemia now appear to have fully awaken their powers," said Schneizel. "They will side with Lelouch."
"As we expected," said DeVoe. "Even if it appears a little premature for the both of them. You should keep an eye on the Knight of Nine as well. I doubt it will take long for Lelouch to determine the purpose of our little play."
"Or at least what he believes the purpose to be," said Schneizel.
"A puzzle within a puzzle," said DeVoe. "The only thing we truly need to feel concerned about are the ones who have allowed him such technological aid. However the Master has already taken that into consideration and is taking the necessary action."
Schneizel's wine caught in his throat for a second.
"Is...is my father gone with to see...him?" he asked, with an uncharacteristic stutter.
"I believe so," said DeVoe. "And perhaps soon enough you will be granted the honor to go and meet...him."
Charles Zi Britannia was not a man one would expect to see on his knees willingly. But given the two who stood before him there was no other option but to bow. His own master, Vandal Savage, who taught him to control and hone his power. But even Vandal gave a slight bow of respect to the towering figure who stood before them. His massive frame was silhouetted given the light of a great plume of flame coming from the ground despite being from a distance.
"You were wise to come to me Savage," the darkened figure said in a voice that made Charles tremble. "Their presence could very well disrupt our...arrangement."
"Thank you...great Darkseid," said Savage as the dark figure turned.
He towered over Savage, his arms clasped behind his back with skin the texture of granite. His eyes billowed with crimson, flaming energy complimenting the expression he wore. A face many would describe Charles wore when he ruled over the Britannian Empire. But standing before Darkseid, Charles's eyes were touching the ground in fear and his expression matched.
Only Savage smiled as he spoke to Darkseid.
"I have found the island great Darkseid," said Savage.
"Excellent, as I have managed to locate our quarry," said Darkseid. "And you believe these...children can be of use?"
"I do," said Savage. "All I need to do is get them to the island if you can get him into position."
"Child's play," said Darkseid. "Although the issue of my wayward ward is indeed problematic."
"We do not know if they sense your involvement," said Savage. "They could be completely ignorant of your hand or great one."
"But none the less, the boy who leads these children, this Batman, is no doubt close to them," said Darkseid. "He is yours is he not...Charles?"
"Oh...yes Great Darkseid," said Charles. "Lelouch, he is my son born of...of my most beloved bride."
"And sadly the only one of your children who shows true promise," said Darkseid. "Disappointing isn't it when the children who please us the most are the ones who rebel against us the greatest. You have the sympathies of Darkseid."
"You honor me," Charles said meekly.
"But the terms have been set," said Darkseid. "And the Hand of Darkseid must not be seen anymore than it already has."
"Yes great one," said Savage. "As such, I would like to humbly ask for a return of property I lent to your man Desaad. With it, I believe I can throw off our enemy and place them exactly where they will serve us best."
Darkseid's eyes bore down on Savage who continued to smile as he took knee before him.
"Very well," said Darkseid. "You may reclaim your...V.V."
"Thank you Great Darkseid," said Savage, rising and extending his hand. "By your wisdom and benevolence, our pact survives."
Darkseid took Savage's wrist and the two shook while Charles looked on only one thought in his mind.
'Brother,' he thought.
Author's Note: Sorry if it seemed like Sportsmaster and Tigress went out a little too easy. But there were a lot of things I had going on here and if anything I wanted to try and demonstrate how Lelouch's is extremely prepared and how they were too cocky and were really just expendable pawns. The real thing I wanted to get on with was DeVoe and Lelouch, now essentially playing chess with each other while beyond them Vandal Savage and his 'old friend' Darkseid are playing a game of their own with the League as planned pawns.
And now Barda knows her adopted son is not going to think any less of her and has brought in three new additions. The newly awakened Hawk and Dove, and Nonette will shine on her own soon enough. But they won't be trusted so easily just yet and there is another bird in Japan ready to fly.
Next Turn: The Hawk, the Dove, and the Owl.
