Toshinori got to the teacher's lounge a few minutes after the end of the school day, holding the animated films in his arms. Nezu looked up with a smile: Midnight paused briefly.
"Oh, hello there, Toshi. I was just on my way out, so I can't chat for long. I hope you have a nice night." She patted his back as she walked back him, Toshinori stuttering out,
"Um, bye, Midnight. I hope you get home safely." She walked out with a calm wave, Nezu saying cheerfully as he sat with a large cup of tea,
"How are you this evening, Mr. Yagi?" He bowed to the small mammal, saying politely,
"I'm fine, Nezu-sama. How are you? Your coat is looking excellent as always." Nezu beamed, nodding at him.
"I am quite well, and I've been brushing more frequently than typical. It certainly does keep one's coat gleaming. Is something bothering you?" Toshi hesitated, but asked,
"Nothing very important, sir. I was wondering, um… where's… where's Snipe?" Toshi asked, looking around for the already elusive teacher. They had agreed to have a debate about whether Zootopia or Inside Out were more influential on the movie business. Well, more like they were going to watch them and explain why they were good while doing so. Nezu smiled.
"He unfortunately had an appointment today. Ectoplasm went with him, so they should be back soon enough. Why do you ask?" Toshinori frowned.
"Well, we were going to watch a few movies together, that's all. If he's sick, I'd rather him recover." Nezu smiled, shaking his head slightly.
"Oh, no, he's not sick, though I appreciate your offer to let him rest. He's just had this scheduled for quite a while, and I denied him the opportunity to reschedule this time." Toshinori nodded, shifting slightly. What on earth did Snipe have an appointment for, and why was he trying to reschedule it?! He sat down, waiting as Nezu finished his tea and cleaned up, humming quietly. "Well, I will leave you to it, Mr. Yagi. Have a pleasant day." Nezu walked out, leaving Toshinori to his thoughts. It was only 3 minutes later that Snipe came in with Ectoplasm. Snipe was leaning on a cane, mumbling in English under his breath as Ectoplasm almost carried him to a chair.
"D*** arthritis… Sorry I'm late, Toshinori. Thanks, kid." Snipe looked exhausted.
"My pleasure, but please follow what the doctor said. I don't want you to get hurt much worse."
"I'm fine. It was just a little surgery." Toshinori's eyes popped slightly as Ectoplasm laughed and headed out, shooting a glance at him and mouthing,
"Don't let him move around too much." Toshinori asked, sputtering slightly,
"Surgery? What on earth for?" Snipe waved him off, wincing slightly from behind his mask.
"I've got bad arthritis, and I had to get back surgery today to help with the pain. It's not as big a deal as people say." Toshinori was by no means a medical expert, but he was pretty sure any kind of surgery was a big deal: Snipe was likely trying to play it off and nothing serious to not let other people worry about him.
"I've…I've never heard of getting surgery on your back for arthritis." Snipe shrugged, mask twitching from a wince.
"I've been putting it off, and Nezu-sama said I couldn't do that anymore."
"Why would you push something like that off when it is causing you…" Toshinori felt the warning glare, and bit his lip. "…Never mind, that's a silly question."
"Yes, it is, Mr. No Stomach for 5 years." Toshinori raised his hands in mock surrender at the sharp tone.
"Is…is there anything you shouldn't do?" Toshinori asked nervously. Snipe slumped slightly, looking more annoyed at the situation than Toshinori now.
"A whole list of things. Mainly no stairs, no lifting over 10 pounds, no strenuous activities, and plenty of rest in a reclined setting so the bones can realign and things like that. But I'm telling you, it's no worse than surgery for your hand." Toshinori wiped the spurt of blood away, exclaiming,
"You've had surgery in your hand?!" Snipe chuckled, pointing to his right hand and moving to his left forearm.
"One in my hand after some nutjob stabbed it, and one in my forearm because some loon shot it." Toshinori's jaw dropped, and Snipe said softly, looking away, "You of all people know hero work is one of the most unforgiving jobs out there."
"W-well, yes, but…" Toshinori wiped blood away from the corner of his mouth, reeling from the thought Snipe got that injured. "You're so…"
"I'm long distanced based, not invincible, Yagi-kohai. I've got quite the collection of injuries now."
"Oh…I'm surprise you remember me after so long." Snipe chuckled.
"Of course, I remember the hot-blooded kid who wanted to save the world. Ow." Snipe shifted slightly. "Let's get this party started." Toshinori put the movie in, and sat next to Snipe gingerly. "I'm not breakable yet, Yagi."
"Sorry, Snipe. I just always thought…well, you would kind of always be untouchable." Snipe chuckled.
"I always thought I'd retire before you did, but look where we ended up. Life rarely works the way we think it will."
"Well, you aren't wrong about that. What brought you back to UA?" Snipe said casually,
"Nezu-sama contacted me about a position opening up, so I took him up on the offer. You?"
"Pretty much the same as you: Nezu offered me a position and I decided to take it on. I guess you've had a lot of adventures, then." Snipe laughed, wincing.
"Not as much as you, Mr. Symbol of Peace. I've done this and that, just trying to do my part." Toshinori looked down.
"Based on what I just heard, you've done more than your fair share."
"Yet there's always more to help out with. Weren't we going to watch a movie, Yagi?"
"Right. Here we go." Toshinori looked at the man clearly in a lot of pain. "I don't think you give yourself enough credit, Snipe." Snipe definitely didn't hear him, focusing on the movie.
