"And now some words from your new captain," Coach said to the crowd standing in front of him. It was no surprise to Kuramochi that Miyuki was the one to step up in front of the crowd and address them as Seido's new captain.
Kuramochi caught his best friend's eyes and gave him an encouraging smile. Miyuki nodded in response and began to address the team. Kuramochi listened intently to Miyuki speak and by the time he had finished, Kuramochi concluded that he had done an incredible job.
Miyuki moved through the crowd and stood next to Kuramochi. The whole team began to listen to Coach's long talk about what the season would look like from here on out.
Kuramochi let his eyes wander a bit as Coach continued to talk. He glanced around the field and at everyone else standing there until his eyes settled on Miyuki.
He did not appear to be listening at all. Miyuki was tapping his foot against the ground, his hand was fluttering across his side, and his eyes were wandering the field.
He must be anxious about everything, being new captain and all, Kuramochi reasoned.
As Coach droned on, his words didn't appear to comfort Miyuki much. His foot still taped rapidly against the ground and his hand continued to move at his side.
All of the sudden, the hand that was fluttering at Miyuki's side reached out and grabbed Kuramochi's hand. They both said nothing as Miyuki intertwined their fingers.
Feeling the tension in Miyuki, Kuramochi gave his hand a comforting squeeze. Miyuki quickly looked over in Kuramochi's direction and Kuramochi nodded at him. Neither of them made any move to untangle their hands.
Gradually Miyuki's foot stopped tapping against the ground and Kuramochi could feel some of the tension leave him. Every now and then Kuramochi would squeeze Miyuki's hand again, just to help him know that he was here and that everything would be ok.
Soon, Coach had finished his talk and everyone made their way out onto the field to begin practice. Kuramochi reluctantly let go of Miyuki's hand but then threw an arm around his shoulder as they both headed out onto the field together.
"Ughhhh," Kuramochi moaned. It had been a grueling day of practice and every inch of him felt like to was on fire. He was exhausted.
He flopped down on Miyuki's bed and sighed. He had a habit of passing out in Miyuki's bed, actually. The first time it had happened he remembered waking up late at night to a blanket having been tossed over him and Miyuki asleep on the floor next to him.
As the two of them got closer, Kuramochi found himself actively going to Miyuki's room just to sleep in his bed. Sometimes Miyuki would wake him up for dinner or anything else they had to do and sometimes he would throw a blanket over Kuramochi and quietly do his homework at his desk. Miyuki would also just join him in the same bed sometimes and the two would fall asleep together.
Kuramochi struggled to keep his eyes open. No, he couldn't fall asleep right now, he was actually in Miyuki's room to wait for him to get back from the showers so he could talk to him.
Just at that moment, Kuramochi heard a click from the door and Miyuki strode into the room. He immediately quieted his footsteps upon seeing Kuramochi sprawled out on his bed, expecting him to be asleep.
"I'm awake," Kuramochi said groggily while lifting up his arm and flashing Miyuki a peace sign.
Miyuki gave a slight laugh.
"What's up?" he asked as he flopped down on the bed next to Kuramochi.
"Eh, nothing really just wanted to talk," Kuramochi sat up with a groan and turned to face Miyuki.
"Alright sure, about what?" Miyuki asked.
"Well, you looked super nervous during practice today, I just wanted to make sure everything was good," Kuramochi scanned Miyuki's face carefully. Miyuki didn't like to talk about his emotions much and, if he could, he would try to get around it. But Kuramochi knew Miyuki too well for that to work. There were small little tells in Miyuki's face he could pick up on to see if something really bugging him.
"Don't worry about me, I'm fine," Miyuki smiled at Kuramochi...a fake ass smile, he knew.
"Oh come on, you and I both know that's bullshit," Kuramochi said softly. Miyuki laughed dryly and turned away from Kuramochi.
"Ok, so maybe I am a bit anxious," he relented.
"You know you can talk to me about anything Kaz," Kuramochi grabbed Miyuki's hand and gave it a squeeze, just like he had done during practice. Miyuki gave another laugh at the nickname and turned back to Kuramochi with a nod.
"Great, so tell me what's up," Kuramochi said with a comforting smile. Again, just like in practice, he made no move to take his hand out of Miyuki's.
"I guess I'm just worried that I won't be able to be a reliable captain, I mean, I'm not sure I'm really going to be able to connect with everyone," Miyuki murmured.
"What makes you think that," Kuramochi questioned.
"A captain has to be someone people can rely on, not just in a game setting, but for everything. I'm not the most approachable or open person in case you couldn't tell, I'm not going to be reliable when it comes to matters outside of games," Miyuki explained. Kuramochi nodded.
"I see why what you mean," he murmured, "But I think you'll be just fine! Hell, look at you, you're being pretty open right now."
"That's because I trust you Yosh," Miyuki grinned at him. Kuramochi felt those words go through him like bolts of lightning.
Miyuki always had trust issues, like, serious trust issues that he should honestly probably go see someone about but he never did. So Miyuki saying that he trusted Kuramochi...well he knew just how much it meant for Miyuki to say those words to him.
Kuramochi picked up Miyuki's other hand and held it.
"I know emotions really aren't your thing, but I know you can understand them if you try, you always understand me. When it comes to the rest of the team all you gotta do is just think about it a little harder. Sometimes all people need is someone to listen to them vent or a solution to a simple problem. It's all shit I know you're definitely capable of doing. You got this Kaz, you'll be the best damn captain Seido has ever seen. I believe in you!"
Miyuki stared at him, shocked, for a moment before he threw his arms around Kuramochi.
"Thanks, Yosh, you're the best," he murmured.
"Of course Kaz, everything I said was true," Kuramochi ran a hand through Miyuki's hair, "Now I don't know about you, but I'm fucking exhausted from that practice today," Kuramochi felt Miyuki nod in agreement oh his shoulder.
"So what do you say we watch a movie?" Kuramochi asked.
"Sure, I'm in," Miyuki grinned and the two of them stood up to go pick out a good movie on TV to watch.
Kuramochi could tell just by looking that his words really had helped Miyuki.
Good, he thought, everyone else can see he's gonna be a great captain, now we just need the dumbass to see it for himself.
