A/N: Thrice upon a time, a young boy BURIED THE LIGHT DEEP WITHIN!
Sorry for the bad joke, but seriously man...I'm goddamn hyped by Special Edition: Featuring Vergil from Motivation May Cry V and 3.0+1.0. Add Animaniacs and I'm now a truly happy geek.
And yeah, this is the latest chapter. I'm still thinking about how to incorporate Vergil's V skillset into the story. Also Cereza means Cherry, so yes the witch's Bayonetta in disguise.
"Ah, this is good..." Lady murmured as she enjoyed her Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
All of them just agreed that if finding the Dead Sea Scroll of Lumen Sages proven to be impossible, they'll try to steal the ones from this world instead. Neither options were easy, but they truly need to see what's inside the scroll. They also had theory that Dead Sea Scrolls was the reason how Faunus found out about Adam's embryo, which made the scroll even more important.
"So if you only got here since three weeks ago...how did you got enough money to pay for all of this? I know my wine, Bayo. This is not some cheap stuffs."
"I maxed my platinum credit cards. Not like they can charge in parallel world," Enzo whistled at her brazenness while the rest shook their heads. "I also took the highest paid dirty job I can find. People will give you the good ones if you can catch a .44 Magnum with your teeth and chew it out. Also my reputation so far's clean. Few broken silverware, no cracked secret stashes."
"If there's one thing you're better at than Dante, it's doing your job without ended up destroyed something valuable," Vergil snarked.
"Thank you, boy."
"I'm over 50," Vergil gritted his teeth slightly.
"And I'm over 600 years old. To me, all of you are just good little kids. Badass little kid for you especially, Mr. Alighieri, but still a boy," Vergil took time to recompose himself, and it was a while before anyone open their mouth again, started by Lucia.
"Well, Bayonetta, so you get your money by doing high-end devil hunting and stuffs. Shouldn't you worry about someone finding you out with how high profile you've been? Especially since you've found out how UN have fallen."
"It's not like I have any lead anyway, and I already took some active measures by going a little ambiguous."
"What you mean by that?"
"My persona as demon hunter is slightly different. Near complete silent during meeting time, and just as flamboyant during combat," Vergil somehow got reminded of his father, considering the stories from his mom about Sparda's feats. Only in reverse. "All being said, I'm fortunate enough that my first lead is from my alternate Enzo and his friends here, not the-" a phone ringing, which belonged to the witch. She answered her phone with much distant tone. "Cher."
"Cher, I have a big job from you. Luka Redgrave, the son of a famous reporter. He said he wants to complete research of his father, and he's searching for the biggest gun for hire. Heard his backer's a big name in UN. Maybe this is the first job that can give you a challenge."
"I'll take it," the woman closed her phone. "Well, that's a pleasant surprise."
"What does he said?"
"Turned out there's a Luka Redgrave in this world after all. He wants to complete the writings of his father. But there's a catch: he's being bankrolled by someone big in UN. What do you guys think? Should I take the job?" Bayonetta asked.
"Well, on one hand, we need a good mole there, and you can fit since they've found out about us once. On the other hand, you still haven't fully accustomed with how this world worked. Things could be different enough to make your job far riskier than it should be."
"I already know that here, powerful demons mostly turned into weapons when they're subdued into your will, or give you new attributes to help your fights when they lacked in sentience. I prefer having option to have them as pets that I can call, but I know a man who forged my weapons by exactly that method, so this can do."
"That's good, but I also have to tell you this: in this world, no one ever know if there's true hell and heaven, but godlike beings have ruled their own hell and heaven," Lucia explained." Maybe that's why you have problems with your powers: your contract belong to a dimension we haven't step into yet. In case you truly need your full power, you'd better find the hell where you belong."
"Hmm, will keep that in mind..." the tall woman remarked as she swiped her phone.
Her face softened when she saw the picture of the son of Reporter Redgrave.
Oh, Luka...
Somewhere, in a school of Tokyo-3...
"I can't believe you used your new laptop for disco ball! That thing must've cost you a fortune!"
"Relax, Shinji! That money from our business is good enough to make us live a good life until 69!" as Kensuke said, the shipments went successfully. Both boys were now multi-millionaires, but they didn't show off too much. Well aside from that 4K gaming laptop's RGB lighting system as disco ball thing.
"I know, but just because we have enough money to buy the school that doesn't mean we can just throw them away."
"Hey, I'm just a boy living a dream, Shinji. You did dumb shit sometimes too, right?" Kensuke retorted to the boy with purple jacket.
"I'm just giving you an advice here. I know a little about some people who blow away their money here and there, and then unable to get some for a while because of them being lazy bum. Don't want you to end up the same since we haven't get this much money on our hands before."
"Yeah, yeah. I'll keep that in mind. Look, why don't you flatter the new supermodel of our school while I talk with Touji for a while? She's trying to talk with Ayanami. Can't be good considering their personality contrasts," Kensuke pointed to the two girls.
"You think? She's on the roll with everyone worshiping her today, and none the wiser about Touji selling her candid pics. Doesn't seem anything can break her day," Said Shinji.
"Dude, she's a volatile girl who we just met to boot! You think you know the way her mind works? She could be ready to explode for all I know!" Kensuke warned, and his friend ended up running to the two girls just to make sure. Their hunch was right: Asuka stood against Rei who was reading about chemistry, and she looked exasperated.
"...the hell, girl, you're so weird!"
"Girls, what's going on here?"
"Shinji! I was asking Rei if she wants to be a friend, but she rejected me..." The Second Child used her best innocent charm against Shinji to help her case. It barely worked for the boy, but he knew he couldn't just scold her.
"Your reasoning was that it would be convenient. I do not believe it's a good foundation for a relationship," Rei retorted.
"Well, Asuka. Did you mean that it would be good for fellow pilots to have good relationship, or you're just looking for an easy friend?" the question took Asuka off her game.
"Well, I suppose it's a little bit of column a, and a little of b..." the girl admitted.
"I think you girls need to know what you're getting here before trying to befriend each others. Just like your colors, both of you can be exact opposite. Getting too fast could hurt both of you. So why don't you two just shake hand to show that you're willing to be amicable?" the girls looked between each others for a while. When the red-headed girl offered her hand, her blue-haired fellow pilot took and shook it. Shinji noticed a little hesitance from both but he'll take it for now. "Now that wasn't so hard, right? You two don't even have to do stuffs like hanging out and laughing together right away. Showing that you two are willing to take a step to better relationship alone is good enough sometimes."
"Yeah yeah, I hope it's the case..." deep down, Asuka still hoped it would worth it. But Shinji's words made her believe it won't be too harmful even if things didn't work out. Truth was, her friends always came from similar background or almost objectively sweet girls, so hearing that Rei was her almost polar opposite scared her a little.
"Look at you, my man Shinji. Already working on your harem, huh?"
"W-wait a minute! What are you talking about, Kensuke?" Shinji stammered at the sudden appearance.
"What the hell are you on, nerd?!" Asuka growled as Rei's cheeks slightly reddened.
Even in the face of an enraged German girl, the boy did not flinched. "Oh, it's so unfair! You already got Ayanami-san, did you have to take the new hot chick too?"
"Y-you two are items?" as expected, Asuka changed her focus.
"No! I-I don't even know what he's talking about!" both of them bickered, but soon they looked back at the bespectacled boy as he suddenly guffawed.
"Man, at the end you're just a boy too. It's just a joke, guys! I don't mean most of it. And I can't believe the girls took the bait too!"
"...Ha-ha. You got me...Wait, what do you mean with most?" asked Shinji.
"You befriended Ayanami here. I think that's more than everyone her could go with her," Kensuke explained.
"Wirklich? I thought she would fit with some of the intellectuals and nerds considering all she did is reading some books in her time!"
"Trust me, she doesn't hang with anyone," Rei just ended up hiding her face with the book as the rest talked about her, somehow feeling insulted and embarrassed. "Anyway Shinji, Touji wants to talk to you. You haven't visit Sakura, right?"
"Oh, yeah. Haven't had the time yet. Last time I have a break, I need to babysit Pen-Pen and ended up in camping trip with you. I guess see you girls later, then," waved Shinji as he walked into their favorite spot.
"So..." the bespectacled eyed both girls. "You two and Shinji-"
"It's just business between pilots, Aida. Back off."
"Sohryu's statement is valid, Aida. You do not have the rights to ask us."
"You forget that Shinji chose me as a co-pilot, which means I have the rights for that information," Kensuke wiggled his eyebrows.
"Do you want me to revoke it with my fists?!" Kensuke gulped as the fiery readhead brought her knuckles together.
"P-point taken..."
Sometimes later...
"...So really, I had no training at all before fighting the angel! Of course I'm still sorry, Sakura-chan. I'm just saying that things could've been different."
"It's okay, Shinji-san!" the little girl coughed a little. "Since you still kick the...bottom of the monster, you must be really great, right?"
"Well Sakura-chan, I'm not meaning to brag, but I definitely always try to be as stylish as someone could be!"
"But I'm still more awesome, right Sakura?!"
"Hmm, I don't know, Shinji-san sounds really cool..." Touji slightly slumped. "But it's okay, onii-chan. Even if there are cooler guys out there, you'll still be the greatest guy in my life!"
Touji let out a breath. "Glad I still got it! Anyway Sakura, I'm going to take a dump first okay? You go talk with Shinji-man here."
"Your brother really love you, huh?" Sakura nodded as Touji closed the door. "Well girl, I think both of you really deserve something better."
"I've told you that-"
"I'm not talking about your injuries. You have seen this orb?" the bedridden girl shook her head. "You may don't believe this, but I also know a little or two about magic, and I'll see if this can cure you. If you're scared about magic, then I'll stop, and we'll never talk about this again."
"Is onii-chan brought you here for that?" Shinji nodded. "Then why should I fear you if he already trust you?"
"Then let's get started. Did the doctor said anything about your condition?"
"They didn't say anything to me, but my tummy and head hurt. And Doctor Saki's medicine taste yucky..." the older boy chuckled as he ruffled the girl's brown hair, but deep down he knew how unfortunate the girl was.
"Don't worry, once you get better, Doctor Saki'll not give you the nasty medicine anymore," Shinji placed his green orb on the abdomen area of the little girl. He then squeezed it, giving the girl some of the essence. "How do you feel?"
"I...I think my head and tummy don't hurt that much anymore..." the girl answered.
"Well that's good. I'll search your brother to tell him the good news," The raven-haired boy kissed the girl, and walked out of the door.
And it turned out Touji had been waiting outside for a while.
"So everything's going to be fine?"
"I hope so. Can't heal her completely because the hospital staff will catch on and she's too fragile, but now most of her internal bleeding have been healed, and I've stopped complications from the critical care. If you don't feel it's enough, I'll return soon."
"Nah, for now we're good. All I ask is for you to make sure NERV won't have leverage against my family, that's all."
Shinji nodded before he commented, "You know Touji, that's surprisingly smart of you to anticipate their moves."
"Dad sometimes told me stories about his job, and even some of the politicking he had to do. Ain't hard for me to see how dirty they can be."
"I know it already. I'm the son of the goddamn Commander, and he nearly arrested me for a prank."
"Shit, man. Your father's really such an asshole!" Touji clapped his own mouth after he realized what just came out of it. "Sorry, dude-"
"Nah, it's fine. We...never have a good relationship in the first place," for a while, Touji could see his otherwise super cool friend looked vulnerable.
"Oh man, you really got a hard life. Look, there's nothing much I can do about it, so all I can say is that you have me, okay?" Shinji nodded as he gave a slight smile. The taller boy could sense that this smile's slightly bitter. "What if I buy you the ice cream? I know you can buy the store now, but it's the thought that's matter, right?"
"Yeah, I guess-" unfortunately, the alarm rang, signaled an incoming angel attack. "Man, it's barely ten days...sorry, Touji. Maybe later."
"My offer will still stand!" Touji shouted, just barely heard by Shinji as the raven-haired boy ran faster. Had he saw how fast The Third Child could go, Touji would've thought he could defeat the Angel by himself.
"Okay, let's go!"
"Asuka, wait!" the purple Evangelion grabbed its red companion by the arm. "The Angels are so bizarre and unpredictable. I think it's a real bad idea to just rush it since we can't based our strategy on previous angel."
"Shinji's right. None of the angels are similar. In fact without its blood, we would considered Fifth Angel as some kind of android," Misato agreeing.
"Yeah, yeah, I got it. Look, we already agreed I can go first, so why don't you play a backup for me? Not that anything can go wrong with Me, but better safe than sorry."
"Whatever you said..." Shinji just shrugged as Asuka momentarily forgotten that he was supposed to be superior in many sense.
Asuka charged into the Angel with her brand new lance, and cleaved it into two with ease. She proudly smirked as Misato affirmed how she did a really fine job.
So it surprised everyone to see the Angel just turned into two individuals instead.
"Oh, give me a break!"
Just after the split, both angels pummeled Unit-02 with coordinated moves. Everything barely registered to Asuka, who only managed to deflect two strikes that ended up meaningless thanks to the other half. She ended up planted to the ground after the angels were done.
The two of them ended up got blasted with a gun just as they turned around to face the other Evangelion. They fused instead of split further, and the damage were not seen anymore just as quick.
"So their AT Field strength is nowhere near as good as even the Third Angel, and they're not stronger than the Evangelion, but they're so well coordinated and recover even faster than Third Angel it barely matter. Shinji, I think we're facing our worse nuisance yet. Easy to beat, and yet hard to kill."
"On the bright side, they can't turn into triplets. Fine then. I guess we can go a little wild!" luckily, The Third Child picked Brawler style before the battle. He joined Agni and Rudra into one, and used The Spirit in left side.
Both halves of the Angel stopped the conjoined twin swords, but the different property of Agni and Rudra suddenly activated, hurting them in different way. As the ones with Rudra got pushed off, Unit-01 stabbed the other half repeatedly and shoot it every other stab. The result was an angel with 80% of its torso missing, and Unit-01 moved to the other half.
But it knew Shinji's aiming at it now. The Angel grabbed the Glaive that Asuka dropped, and he clashed with Unit-01. The weapon's extreme vibration made Shinji dropped his weapon, and the angel used the opportunity to merge into one again.
Both of them then split again, and they fought against Unit-01 that just grabbed The Spirit again. Unit-01 attempted to shot both halves, but they turned into one to dodge it. The larger Angel tried to whack Shinji to the ground, but his shot forced it to split into two again. He retrieved Rudra from the ground just in time to deflect the two Angels. The twin angels attempted double sweep kick at Unit-01, and the pilot dodged it nimbly. He then attempted to maim both Angels from high attack.
Then they used their momentum, swung their whole body while grabbing the twin swords. They slammed their feet into the temple of the purple mecha, cracked its skull and gave it massive concussion.
One of the half pinned the disoriented Evangelion to the ground as its other half picked Agni and lifted it above the head. The Evangelion's pilot tried his best to get up, but it was too weakened in the current state to do anything.
Then the sword burned the Angel's hand before it can struck the owner.
"HEY! DON'T THINK WE'LL JUST LET YOU DO ANYTHING TO OUR MASTER!"
And its other half was taken away from Shinji, thanks to the red Evangelion turned it into Shish Kebab with Sword of Damocles from below the ground. Unit-02 kicked both disoriented angels out of the way, and helped The Third Child to get to his feet.
"You fine?"
"Yup." Shinji shook his head. "But I believe these things are too much for us to handle now. Misato, as soon as we pinned it down we need to drop an N2 into these annoying twin."
"But I-"
"Asuka, these things are far too coordinate for us to fight. Shinji don't even have time to hook his umbilical cord. We need to analyze how they fight first before we can kill them for good. Before that, we just have to swallow our pride and let the N2 bomb damage them enough."
"It's supposedly my time to-"
"It's no use, Asuka. The Angels recover too quick. You can't win this one yet. I beg you, be patient."
The tone of her AI somehow calmed the fiery pilot. Whether its strange familiarity, or she just needed another voice to remind her, Asuka's stubbornness wilted. She ended up saying nothing, but for the rest it's enough.
With Asuka agreeing, a stationed bomber plane's about to embark...
Later...
Both Shinji and Asuka were in Command Deck, waiting for the opening for review of their fight. None of them were looking pleased, and neither were their superiors, Captain Katsuragi and Vice Commander Fuyutsuki.
"My first fight in Japan, and it went to hell. Can't a girl catch a break before any of you chewed me out?"
"You disregarded basic common sense! We've told you angels are not to be approached so lightly because there's always something fishy in them!" Misato erupted after Asuka's opening.
"But you said great job after I sliced it! It's not my fault the damn thing's just refusing to die!"
"You-!"
"That's enough!" Fuyutsuki interrupted both women. "Pilot, what's your job?"
"Pilot the EVA-"
"To save the world," The Vice-Commander finished his pilot's line. "If it got through us, the world is damned. And it's going to be goddamn tragic if earth went through another Impact thanks to the ego of a teenager, and you definitely don't want to be marked in history as the moron who ended earth, right?!"
"Correct, sir..." Asuka tried her best to use the military values that was drilled to her, which thanks to Vergil made it clear it wasn't wasted.
"Sorry for being harsh to you, but you need to get it clear that this is not mere competition. This is war. We can't let erroneous mistakes to get pass us because there's no second try."
"Especially since in far worse case, we'll be busy settling down with the land owners and barely have time to enact our plans. You're lucky that your own Devil Arms was good enough to pin the Angels into a government land, so they are more ready to accept our mistake."
"You know, speaking of Pilot Sohryu's Devil Arms, are you sure she got it from an e-Bay's transaction?" Fuyutsuki still couldn't fully believe that story.
"Well she said it only got its strength when she brought it to the cockpit, so it fit Nina's description that some Devil Arms needs some kind of awakening from another source to fully use it. We should've been glad instead since there are stories about people getting screwed and possessed by their own Devil Arms," Fuyutsuki slightly shivered at the thought of being possessed by powerful demons, and contained his fear deep within.
"Anyway, the fight was not a total embarrassment. The strikes that both of you landed on the twin angels did its job. We now know how their healing work, and how to overcome it."
"How are we going to do that, anyway?"
"It's simple: both of you need to synchronize your last attack to the cores of the Angels before its yin and yang cores fused back. But getting to it, now that's the difficult part," Ritsuko showed them the graph. "You see, both angels are nowhere near as strong as the previous angels, but they're very well coordinated because they're still one mind in two body. If you overwhelm only one of them, the other will find its way to turn into whole and regenerate easily. And then the cores need to be hit at the exact time; we've seen one of Shinji's shotgun shot hit the Yin and it healed instantly. That means both Shinji and Asuka need to be in the same place at the same time to strike them. To be exactly. you need to hit the core in 1.25 seconds."
"Sounds pretty difficult, but I'm ready for it. But as Asuka said, how?"
"Initially, I wanted to suggest synchronized dancing," both pilots shuddered from Kaji chiming in. "But considering Shinji is a great fighter on his own, and Asuka being pretty well trained herself, I would say 'dancing battler training' is the better solution. Do any of you two know martial arts drill for and against multiple fighters?"
"I believe so," The Third Pilot answered. Not that he truly mastered one, but both Agni and Rudra know a lot of it considering their brother-ship.
"Then incorporate the move to fight the angel. Do whatever you need, but remember that both of you need to be very well synced," both pilots nodded to Fuyutsuki's words. "We have seven days before UN dropped N2 on the twin angels again and destroyed more scenery and our reputation...with only 40% chance of destroying it for real. Both of you will be placed at Captain Katsuragi's apartment while she bunked in Geofront's room. All of you are dismissed."
"I cannot believe all of it going this badly! Schiesse, Schiesse, Schiesse!"
"Relax, Asuka. We're still in one piece, and there's only some minor reconstruction on our robots."
"Well, then I'm not that-" the girl recomposed herself as she got reminded that the boy was Vergil's pick to teach her. "I'm just upset that we ended up getting help from UN to nuke them. Things are not going that well between UN and NERV, you know? It's like military branches, but instead of tough love it's nothing but politics at its worst. And as you know, I'm not a fans of those idiots."
"Then we just need to hit them hard. And I'm sure you're up to it."
"Of course The Great Sohryu is ready for some more! Who do you think I am, huh?"
"So...you two are going to do some synchronizing battle, huh?" the voice stopped both pilots from talking further. It was Tony Redgrave. "Gotta admit, that sounds like a bad sexual euphemism for me."
"Who's this asshole?" Asuka sneered.
"This asshole, is none other than Tony Redgrave, at your service. My job here's to clean up the mess the monsters caused around the city," the man introduced himself.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not in the mood to talk with our cleaning service."
"And rumor goes by, I'm as cool as Shinji boy here," this stopped Asuka from stepping out of the conversation. But alas, she looked at him in disbelief. "C'mon, Shinji. Tell this stubborn girl I'm the real deal."
"He's right. By cleaning service, he meant 'using two gigantic saw that can merge into superbike to slowly cut the corpses into pieces'."
"There's also my trusted Dr. J's hat, but drunk people mistook me for famous people whenever I use this, and in this city, you need every liquor you can find to deal with all of it. So I haven't use it for a while. Not after that one time things got rowdy between the three bridge bunnies who can't decide if I'm Heartbreak Kid, MJ, or a really gay cowboy."
"...I'm sorry, what was that part again?"
"It's not my place to describe it in details. But anyway, here's my offer: I can teach you some things about fighting in highly coordinated manners. I have been working with awesome people as a team. Not as smokin' as me, but very few does. So I can teach you how to fight together, even if you ended up sticking with different styles. After all, you two just need to make sure the last hit really sealed it."
"You sure you want him to teach us, Shinji?" the boy nodded. "Well, if he trust you, then so do I."
"Good, because I need to borrow him for a while," Tony grabbed Shinji to a nearby room to have a talk. "Okay, what's the plan here?"
"I'm thinking about letting Agni and Rudra to teach us their tricks, Dante."
"Those two noisy fellows? You sure you won't drive the redhead crazy with their chattering?"
"Well, if she can't handle it, I can just say 'Vergil will be disappointed by your lack of motivation'."
Dante slightly chuckled. "I forgot you're his substitute. Well, I'll still drop by one day to give you two some helping hands. Also, is it true that you're suspecting that your Evangelion is different?"
"Why else my Eva can't absorb the Angels' essence while Unit-02 can?"
"Sure it's not because you're using a Test Unit?"
"And what's missing from the Test Unit then?" Shinji asked back, and the Legendary Devil Hunter nodded in understanding.
"Well I'll send the message to Nico. Let's hope she make some breakthrough in this organization to see what they're really doing. Adios, until then!" the man walked out of the door, and Asuka quickly entered it.
"You know, Tony's quiet a heißes. Not as good as Kaji, but still."
"He's married. And what's with you and older men?"
"I'm a college-graduate girl! I think I deserve to be seen as a fine young woman, in higher caste than you!"
"...You do realize there are kids fantasizing about hot adults, right?"
Shinji ended up having to leap between windows to escape from his fiery redhead's companion.
As the night came, Fuyutsuki Kouzou was in deep thought, unable to rest his mind for a slumber. He let a sigh.
He knew Ikari so well, almost as good as Yui was. Despite him being a weird man with no social skill, and unwilling to improve in that area, Gendo was not a bad person. While he couldn't get the sweet side that Yui got from the man, they were on close relationship. Close enough to understand each others. And it still lasted to this day.
But Yui's death...it broke him. It turned him into someone even colder than ever. But most importantly, it made him twisted all the teachings from Yui herself, a wonderful woman who believe you can be happy in your own paradise even in hell, if you're willing to live in it.
For Gendo, he has found his heaven, and he'll get it back no matter the cost, everything be damned.
Fuyutsuki sighed once more. It was one of those time he thought about his role as accessory in this whole madness. He never truly enjoyed it, but he was the only one who Gendo could trust. The only one who could curb some of his worst tendencies. He then taking a book from the pocket.
The cover was signed 'for Third Child Ikari'. Knowing the truth, he chuckled at the lacks of mention regarding Yui and Gendo's involvements.
"Shinji and Misato, I gave you the first key to our rotten foundation. When you solved the rest of them, even if you found me not worthy to be atoned, then so be it."
