I'm back! Not quite two years late but life has a way of being unpredictable. I won't bore anyone with the details. Essentially a move and then home repairs that led to water damage and well chaos from there. I want to jump back into this because I always enjoyed writing it and I really want to write the sequel. So here it goes. The finale. Not how I wanted to end it but better late than ever. Enjoy!
Jack, Roy, and Brenda stood off to the side and let Julie and Ethan mourn. Sarah, Benny and Evelyn did their best to console them. They had decided to not wait around like sitting ducks after they didn't hear from Ross for over an hour. Jane was back at the hospital with Erica and Rory. No one but Sam would get into the hospital for the rest of the night. Now here they were. In the Morgan house with Ross's body.
"Loyal to the end," said Jack. "Damnit, Ross."
"We can't let him pick us off one at a time," replied Brenda. "Any ideas, Jack?"
"I might have one. It's risky. But it'd take all the power away from this guy. I don't care what sort of items he has. He won't stop this," began Jack.
Sam and Ethan walked away from Ross, tears in their face. Jack knew they were hurting but also that they knew they'd have to mourn later. They had to be in the moment to deal with this guy.
"I want him dead," said Sam through gritted teeth.
"So do I. I have an idea. You won't like it," warned Jack.
"I think we'll try anything at this point," assured Evelyn.
"Alright. Right now we could use Julie, right?" Asked Jack.
"Yes. Unfortunately she's dead," reminded Brenda.
"But powerful. If we let her possess someone, we can use her powers," suggested Jack.
The adults all went pale and Evelyn shook her head. Brenda and Roy exchanged nervous glances.
"She would destroy the vessel. They'd be finding pieces of them for days," warned Evelyn.
"And only another Seer could survive long enough for her to do anything," reminded Roy.
"Of course. And even if that Seer survived enough for her to help us, they're as good as dead. At least most of them. You'd need a Seer nearly as powerful. Like her son," said Jack.
He was looking at Ethan who raised an eyebrow and pointed at himself. Jack nodded.
"If you hold your hand on her grave long enough, she'll possess you. Then I don't care what tricks this guy has. He'll be defenseless," explained Jack. "A bullet between the eyes will take care of the rest."
"Jack, no. Ethan's too young. He's just growing into his powers. He can't-"
Jack was looking at Ethan. He walked over and put his hands on his shoulders.
"He's got Julie's blood. He can handle it. It's just, there could be some physical damage. And this will develop your powers even more. You'll be as powerful as she was. Which makes you a target. Are you willing to do that? Yes or no. Right now."
"I'm ready. This guy is going to pay for what he did," said Ethan.
"We go to the graveyard. Stay close together. If need be, we'll distract him. Right guys?" Asked Jack, looking at Brenda and Roy.
"We're with you, Jack," assured Roy.
"Watch your selves. Stick close to us. Sarah, you're in charge of your friends. If we have to distract this guy, get them to the graveyard," said Jack.
"What do I do?" Asked Sarah.
"Hold Ethan's hand to Julie's grave. She'll do the rest. Let's move out."
…
They were a block away from the cemetery. Jack was in the lead. Roy was taking up the rear. Brenda was staying close to Ethan. Sarah stayed between Ethan and Sam. Benny and Evelyn would not be able to help due to the hunter's magic protection so they were defenseless but Evelyn wouldn't let an attack on Whitechapel go unanswered.
Suddenly Ethan pitched forward, grabbing his stomach and screaming. He was having an incredibly powerful vision. He looked up, his eyes white.
"Dad, watch out!"
Jack turned just in time to catch a bullet in the shoulder, which dropped him. Sarah put her arms around Ethan, Sam, Evelyn, and Benny. Brenda was on it and held up her rifle, firing into the night where the shot that had hit Jack had come from. Jack was alive and crawled across the ground towards the group.
"Sarah, get him to the cemetery. Use your speed."
Sarah took hold of Ethan and hurried off to the cemetery. Brenda went over to the group as Roy scanned the area. Jack sat up and leaned against a nearby car, checking his shoulder.
"How bad is it, Jack?" Asked Brenda.
"Through and through. I'll be fine. Shit. Letting him get the drop on me. I must be getting old," said Jack.
"Join the club," joked Roy.
The hunter was suddenly behind Roy and Jack and Brenda gasped as the hunter plunged a knife into Roy's neck. Roy gagged and his hands went up to the wound as the hunter pulled the knife out. He collapsed to the ground, gushing blood everywhere. Brenda turned around too late to do anything and got two bullets in her stomach for good measure.
"Fuck, no," gasped Jack.
"Washed up old hunters. We all age out eventually," reminded the hunter. "One day I will too. But you won't get the chance."
…
Through the pain in his stomach and a throbbing migraine, Ethan directed Sarah to his mother's grave. His head felt like it could explode.
"Do it, Sarah," he yelled.
Sarah held his hand to the headstone and Ethan let out a primal scream. His whole body felt like it was on fire and he felt a power unlike anything he had ever felt before surging through him. Then he felt nothing.
…
The hunter wiped the blood off his knife as he approached Jack. Roy was lying still on the crowd, a pool of blood spreading out from his gaping neck. Brenda was holding onto her stomach, painfully wasting away. Jack just stared the hunter done. The young hunter was distracted. That was his goal.
"You were the best once. I'm honored to be able to kill you. I'll let other hunters know of your heroics," assured the hunter.
"You kill the boy and you'll be a wanted man," warned Jack.
"There will be no witnesses. Can't afford to. But there will be a new Whitechapel massacre," said the hunter.
"Leave them alone!"
Everyone turned to find Ethan standing in the street. His eyes were completely white though and he was zeroed in on the hunter.
"Facing it like a man. Well done, Mr. Morgan," said the hunter.
"You won't take my son."
Jack gasped and backed away on his butt a little. Julie's voice had come out of Ethan's mouth. It had worked. The hunter laughed.
"Possess the boy with the mother. Well done. But you think I'm an amateur. Kill the vessel, take care of the spirt."
He pointed his gun up and fired. Sam screamed but the bullet did nothing, evaporating before it got to Ethan. Jack smiled.
"She's got more powers now. You're fucked," growled Jack.
Ethan held up his hands and the hunter screamed in pain. Julie acting through Ethan was twisting his insides, firing his nerves. The hunter backed up from the pain, his screams barely audible as he couldn't air in his lungs.
"Jack, now," said Ethan.
Ethan released the hunter and Jack raised his gun and emptied it into the hunter. The young hunter gasped and spit up blood as his body shook from the bullets and he fell back. Ethan's eyes returned to normal and he collapsed, vomiting for a full ten seconds.
"Oh my God," he said.
"You ok?" Asked Jack.
"I think so. I'm nauseous," replied Ethan.
"It will pass."
"Why didn't she just destroy him?"
"She could have hurt you too. She possessed you enough to give me an edge. It worked."
He looked over to the hunter, who was slowly bleeding out on the pavement. He was trying to say something. Evelyn went over to him.
"What are you trying to say?" She asked.
"The Missouri Boogeyman. I took care of it. It won't t-t-t-take anymore children."
Evelyn nodded.
"I'll let people know it was you," assured Evelyn.
The hunter smiled and then spit up blood before the life went out of his eyes. He was gone. Sam went over to Jack and helped him up. Jack immediately went over to Brenda, who was still holding on.
"We'll get you to Jim's," assured Jack.
"My liver's hit. No good. Hurts like hell, Jack. Do me a solid. Better to go out by your hand than that son of a bitch's," said Brenda.
"Are you sure?" Asked Jack.
"I am. Help me up."
Jack helped Brenda onto her knees. She held his gun to her heart and nodded. She looked him right in the eyes.
"He needs a father," whispered Brenda.
She made Jack pull the trigger. It was over in an instant and she slumped onto him before sliding down onto the ground. Jack sighed and shook his head.
"Damnit," he said.
He managed to stand up and nodded at everyone.
"We'll have time to mourn later. We need to get moving. Through the cemetery."
Sirens could be heard in the distance. Jack led the group through the cemetery and away from the chaos.
….
TWO WEEKS LATER
Ethan and Benny walked into the bar to find Jack behind the counter, wiping it down. Things had been quiet for the most part since the night of Ethan's possession. Currently the big news was the triple homicide by the cemetery which authorities was believed to be related to the murder of Ross Morgan. Ethan, Sam, and Jane had been staying with Benny and Evelyn. Jack had vanished on the same night but now was back in town, the head of the new Whitechapel bar.
"Welcome. Get you a drink?" Asked Jack.
His left arm was in a sling but it didn't seem to phase him.
"No drinks. How's the arm?" Asked Ethan.
"It'll heal but my days on the road might be over. Whitechapel needs a new bar. I'm available," replied Jack.
"It'll be nice to have backup now whenever the next monster show up," said Benny.
"You won't really need me. Ethan, how's the powers?" Asked Jack.
"My visions are much more clear. And if I focus I can read people's minds and even control them. Scary to be honest," admitted Ethan.
"I will help you control your powers. But you should be able to handle any monsters that come through. I'm here for hunters, not you two," said Jack.
"Right of course. And now with my mom involved, I think we've got a good team to keep Whitechapel safe," replied Ethan.
"And my grandma is now more trusting thanks to Ethan's new powers," added Benny.
"I'd hate to be whatever supernatural being comes to town next," said Jack.
"That night. The hunter said he dealt with the Missouri Boogeyman. What did that mean?"
"Bad creature. Boogeymen are nasty and hard to track. This one was stalking Missouri for years. Had an appetite for children. Hunters never seemed to be able to trap it. I guess he did. That's a big deal," explained Jack. "But he's no hero. Not after what he did."
"At least mom has justice," said Ethan.
"She does. Anyway, get out of here. Hunter's bars are no place for kids. Keep Whitechapel safe. I'm here if you need me," assured Jack.
Ethan and Benny nodded and salted before leaving. Jack went to the window and watched them walk away. He and Julie had always dreamed of settling down somewhere one day and being parents. This wasn't what Jack had in mind, but it would have to do.
….
The night was quiet and Whitechapel was safe. Ethan sat on the porch of Benny's house, listening for any signs of the supernatural.
"Things won't be able to slip in past you so easily anymore. Not with your powers. But any that do will be more dangerous than anything you've faced," reminded Evelyn, not looking up from her knitting.
"We'll be ready," assured Ethan.
"We don't go to the hunters every time. He's in case of emergency," said Sam.
"I know. But maybe we go, just to say hi," replied Ethan.
Sam smiled and nodded. Evelyn was not smiling though.
"We've suffered greatly. You've been exposed to a more dangerous world. With that comes responsibility. So be ready."
Ethan was about to say something when suddenly he had a vision. He could see man, standing in front of Mr. G's old classroom. He had a devilish smile on his face, as if he enjoyed chaos.
"Mr. Morgan," he said. "Please come up to the board."
The vision ended and Ethan turned to face everyone.
"I think we've got a monster. Mr. G's replacement," warned Ethan. "And I think he's what's known as a trickster."
Evelyn stood up, her face white.
"You know how to attract them. We might need a hunter for this one," said Evelyn. "But only a Seer can help fight a trickster."
"What are they?" Asked Benny.
"Demigods. They just create chaos. Wander the earth and cause mischief and pain. Are you ready for a fight, Ethan?" Asked Evelyn.
Ethan crossed his arms and nodded.
"He's toast," said Ethan.
If all goes to according to plan continued in the next story. But not quite the showdown you think. Please review.
