Season Five
Episode 10
"Praying"
Scene 1: Mason House. Night
Spinner rises from the table carrying his plate to the sink. Emma takes Cristi from her highchair.
Emma: I'm about to get this little one ready for bed.
Spinner: I will clean this up.
Jack enters the house. Baby Gavin greets him at the door.
Jack: Hey. I'm home!
Jack makes his way into the kitchen. Spinner places the rest of the dishes into the sink.
Spinner: Hey.
Gavin reaches for Spinner. Spinner is about to pick him up but suddenly feels a sharp pain. Gavin begins to cry and Jack becomes worried.
Jack: Hey, Spin. Are you okay?
Spinner tries to stand straight and fight through the pain.
Spinner: I'm fine. Just getting old, buddy. I can't keep up the way I use too.
Jack: Should I go get Emma?
Spinner: No. I don't need her to worry unnecessarily.
Spinner smiles as he limps out of the kitchen. Jack could sense that something was going on with Spinner. He watches in worry.
OPENING CREDITS
Scene 2: Degrassi (Parking Lot). Morning
Brandon leans against his car waiting for someone. He looks around him to keep discretion. A young jittery student approaches Brandon.
Student: Are you Brandon?
Brandon (whispering): Aye! Keep your voice down before someone hears you.
Brandon reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small bag of pills. They make the exchange. Brandon quickly pockets the money. Ke'Anna spots Brandon. She waves him down as she makes her way towards him.
Brandon gestures the student to go away. Ke'Anna notices this but she greets Brandon with a quick peck on the lips.
Ke'Anna: What was that all about, Brandon?
Brandon: We should get to class.
Brandon wraps her arms around her and they proceed to walk out of the parking lot. Ke'Anna notices this weird behavior.
Scene 3: Degrassi (Main Foyer). Morning
Sierra enters the Degrassi foyer with a look of worry. She looks around scanning through the students passing in the halls. She notices Alicia laughing alongside Red and Shay. She watches in admiration.
Shay pivots and spots Sierra through the crowd.
Shay: Isn't that your birthmother, Alicia?
Alicia turns around to see Sierra waving. Alicia waves back and turns to her friends.
Red: You should probably go talk to her. It could be important if she came to Degrassi.
Alicia: Maybe you are right. It's the least I can do right?
Red: I'll catch you in class.
Red kisses Alicia's cheek as he adjusts his book bag. Shay takes hold of Alicia's hand.
Shay: I can stay behind if you need the support.
Alicia takes a deep breath and nods.
Alicia: I'll be fine.
She prepares herself and makes her way towards Sierra. Shay and Red make their way in the opposite direction down the hall.
Alicia: Sierra? Hey. Is everything okay?
Sierra: I just got a call from the doctor. They told me that you hung up on them when they called you a few weeks ago. They have your results back.
Alicia takes a seat on the steps.
Alicia: I'm sorry, Sierra, but I don't want to know if I have some genetic type of cancer.
Sierra takes a seat beside Alicia.
Sierra: I'm sorry you're dealing with all this, Alicia. I just want you to be aware of your future.
Sierra looks at her phone.
Sierra: It's getting late and you should get to class. It was nice seeing you, Alicia.
Sierra proceeds to exit out of Degrassi.
Scene 4: Degrassi (Hall). Afternoon
Alicia is deep in thought as she sits on the floor in the hall. Jack is walking down the hall when he notices her. He drops his book bag and takes a seat beside her.
Jack: What's with the long face?
Alicia: Sierra just came and visited me. She wanted to talk about the looming fate of having cancer.
This hits home for Jack. Alicia sighs before noticing what she just said.
Alicia: I'm so sorry, Jack. I wasn't thinking.
Jack: I thought you already had your test results back.
Alicia: I might have embellished the results. I couldn't bring myself to hear them, Jack.
Jack: You should find out, Alicia. You are scared…I get that but do not let that fear stop you from living your life.
Alicia: This can change my entire life.
Jack: You don't have to let it, Alicia. My dad did not let his cancer be a death sentence. It doesn't have to be one for you either.
Jack rises from the ground. He extends his hand to Alicia. She smiles as she takes his hand. Jack receives a text message. He smiles quickly fades.
Alicia: Jack?
Jack: Spinner...he's in the hospital.
Alicia: You should go.
Jack quickly sprints down the hall.
Scene 5: Degrassi (Gymnasium). Afternoon
Brandon is running drills with the basketball team. Ke'Anna storms into the gym. She was furious and everyone could tell. She makes her way towards Brandon on the court.
Basketball Player: Get off the court! You're ruining our practice.
Brandon turns around to see Ke'Anna. He quickly runs to her pulling her off the court. She snatches away from him.
Ke'Anna: Do you want to explain why some random guy asked if you were dealing and how to find you!
Brandon: Keep your voice down!
Brandon pulls her further away from the team.
Ke'Anna: Are you dealing, Brandon?
Brandon: It's not what you think, Ke. I'm only doing this to protect you.
Ke'Anna: Protect me? Does this have to do with Maddox? I'm going to kill him.
Ke'Anna storms away. Brandon chases behind her and grabs her arms.
Brandon: I can handle this. I don't need my girlfriend fighting my battles.
Ke'Anna: I'm sure you're capable of handling yourself, but Maddox…he's dangerous.
Brandon wraps his arms around Ke'Anna's waist. He pulls her closer as he kisses her.
Scene 6: Hospital. Afternoon
Jack rushes into the hospital room in a panic to see Spinner lying in the bed asleep. Emma stands beside him wiping the tears from her trying to put on a brave face for Jack.
Jack (worried): Spinner? Emma? What's going on?
Emma (voice breaking): Spin…He's um…
She tries to fight back the tears, but it becomes too hard. Jack approaches Emma and comforts her. Spinner slowly starts to wake up. He caresses Emma's arms. A smile comes across Emma's face as she starts to kiss Spinner.
Jack: What happened? Why is Spinner in the hospital?
Spinner: Hey, buddy. I am fine. I just tripped at the Dot.
The room door opens as the doctor enters.
Doctor: I see he is finally awake.
Emma: Is he going to be okay, Doc? Is my husband going to be okay?
The doctor takes a deep breath as he opens a folder and begins to review.
Doctor: I'm sorry, but it looks like his cancer has come back.
The room becomes silent. The news breaks Emma. Spinner tries to process, but he looks over to Jack.
Spinner: Jack.
Jack doesn't respond. Emma wraps her arms around him, but Jack rushes out of the hospital room.
Scene 7: Degrassi (Athletic Field). Afternoon
Jack is sitting on the athletic field bleachers in deep thought. Decker makes his way up the steps and takes a seat next to Jack.
Decker: I saw you come in here. You look upset. Are you okay, Jack?
Jack (breaking down): Spin…his cancer is back. I don't know what to do. He lost his dad to cancer. I lost my dad to cancer. I can't lose Spinner.
Decker: You are NOT going to lose him, Jack. I know Spinner is like a father to you.
Jack: I'm scared. I know the feeling of losing someone, but I don't want Gavin or Cristi to be fatherless. I don't want Emma to be without her husband.
Decker starts to laugh, which takes Jack by surprise. Decker tries to sniffle his laughter.
Jack: I'm pouring my heart out right now and you're laughing.
Decker: I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at you, Jack, but I forgot that you can sometimes wear your heart on your sleeves. You think about everyone else but never yourself.
Jack is flattered. He tries to hide his smile. Decker inches towards Jack's hand, but hesitate to grab it.
Decker: I'm glad that we can be friends again, Jack. Especially after everything, I put you through last year.
Jack: You don't have to keep apologizing.
Decker: I do, Jack. I just need you to know that if I could change what I did I would do so many things differently.
Jack: I know.
Jack and Decker's eyes meet. Jack rises from the bleachers.
Scene 8. Scott's Home (Living Room). Afternoon
Alicia enters her house. She notices Sierra and her mother sitting in the living room.
Alicia: Hey. Mom? Sierra?
Sierra: I'm sorry. I thought she knew.
Mrs. Scott: Sierra told me that you could potentially have some genetic cancer.
Alicia sighs in frustration. She did not want to have a conversation.
Alicia: This is the reason I didn't tell you, mom. I did not want this to be a thing.
Alicia tries to walk away.
Mrs. Scott: Don't you walk away from me, Alicia Scott.
Alicia ignores her mother and continues to make her exit.
Scene 9: Degrassi (Hall). Morning
Ke'Anna approaches Brandon at his locker. He closes it and tries to kiss her, but she moves away. He notices the somber look on her face.
Ke'Anna: I think we should take a break. Just until Maddox calms down and find someone else to bother.
Brandon becomes upset.
Brandon: I told you…I have this under control.
Ke'Anna: You're an addict, Brandon. He has you selling drugs! I will handle Maddox.
Brandon: Can you just drop it?
Ke'Anna takes a moment. She knew she could not waiver. She proceeds to walk off.
Brandon: Ke'Anna!
Brandon continues to call her name, but no response. He hits the lockers becoming upset.
Scene 10: The Dot. Late Evening
Decker enters the Dot. He makes his way to the counter where Jordan is working the register. They exchange awkward greetings.
Decker: Hey…Can I get a large black coffee.
Jordan turns around to pour the coffee. He returns to the counter and places Decker drink on the counter.
Decker: I know we haven't seen eye to eye, but I'm glad Jack has you Jordan. He's going to need you with Spinner's cancer coming back.
Jordan has a confused look on his face. Decker realizes that Jordan did not know about Spinner.
Decker: I'm sorry. I thought you knew.
He quietly takes his drink and leaves.
Scene 11: Scott's Home (Alicia Room). Night
Mrs. Scotts knocks on the door as she enters the girl's rooms. Alicia is doing homework on the desk. Shay gets off the bed and leave.
Mrs. Scott: I spoke to the doctor today.
Alicia: I don't want to know. I made my peace with it, mom.
Mrs. Scott takes a seat on the edge of the bed. She places her hand on Alicia's shoulder.
Mrs. Scott: You don't have the gene. Sierra did not pass it to you.
Alicia quickly turns to look at her mother. She finally felt a weight being lifted from her shoulders. Mrs. Scott embraces her daughter as tears run down both of their faces. Red appears at the door.
Red: Mr. Scott let me in. I hope that's okay.
Alicia runs into Red's arms. Red is confused but embraces and comforts the emotional Alicia.
Alicia: I'm going to be okay.
Red: I knew you were.
Mrs. Scott makes her exit out of the room.
Scene 12: The Ravine. Night
Maddox is sitting with his friends drinking and smoking. Ke'Anna appears in the distance approaching the group.
Maddox: The princess of the Ravine has returned! It's time to celebrate.
Ke'Anna: I thought I made myself clear, Maddox. You and I are over. Leave Brandon and me alone.
Maddox turns to his friends with a smirk.
Maddox: Fine. I'll leave your boyfriend alone, but you have to come back to me.
Ke'Anna: No! I'm done. I'm not scared of you anymore, Maddox.
Ke'Anna storms off. Maddox smiles disappear as he becomes filled with rage.
Scene 13: Mason's House (Jack's Room). Night
Jack is lying on his bed with his headphones on. Jordan knocks on the door. Jack takes off the headphones and takes a seat on the edge of the bed.
Jack: I didn't know you were coming over.
Jordon has a somber look on his face. He quietly makes his way further into the room.
Jack: Jordan? Is everything okay? You look upset.
Jordan chuckles.
Jordan: I ran into Decker today at the Dot. And he told me that Spinner's cancer came back.
Jack rises from the bed.
Jack: I was going to tell you, Jordan, but everything has been somewhat hectic.
Jordan: You told Decker though, Jack! I'm supposed to be your boyfriend.
Jack: And you are.
Jordan (upset): You should have come to me before running to your ex. I tell you everything that is going on in my life.
Jack grows frustrated.
Jack: It's different! You were my best friend, Jordan. Now you're my boyfriend and there is no separation between those two things. I need to be able to talk to someone outside of you.
Jordan: So you decided to tell your ex-boyfriend.
Jack: I love you, Jor, but you are starting to sound crazy. Decker and I are friends.
Jordan: He is your first, Jack! He is your first boyfriend and your first love. You two will never be just friends. And I don't think I can do this anymore, Jack.
Jack: Are you serious, Jordan? You want us to break up.
Jordan: For the last four years I wanted to be with you and only you. I always put you first no matter what.
Jack looks into Jordan's eyes as he becomes emotional. Jordan fights back the tears as he leaves out the room.
