Chapter 9

Saphira

I rumbled scratching my scales against the fowl earth. The stench of death and acid stung the sensitive membrane of my nostrils. My little one was in the standing cloth sack talking with our teacher. My wings ached to take flight and rid myself of this odious place. The two sheep were not quite enough to soothe my hungering. I was very unsatisfied with the goings on. Memory urged me to leave these scale-less hatchlings and seek the hot desert to wallow in. My hatchling was staying put so I had no choice but to do likewise. I amused myself by smiling at the soldiers in the scale-less way which showed my many wonderful teeth to them. They squirmed and I rumbled again in amusement. Then a whirl of confusion and surprise washed through the link and I looked at the sack, or tent as the little one called it. Avery stormed out, her bright hair and face matching in redness. My little one came after worry floated to me and I sent back comfort. He looked up with gratitude flashing in his eyes and through the bond.

"Avery wait, stop." I asked if he wished me to stop her and he shook his head. He caught up to her and took her hand.

"They are going to do nothing, nothing, goddamnit I came here to rescue my friend not to wait around and watch as they fight their battles, and try to decide my fate, the balls they have." She punched a thick pole of another smaller sack and it shuddered. These things broke so easily. I felt the fire in me grow at the thought but shut it away for another time.

"They will help but their hands are tied here, she is a strong person and will survive I'm sure. You need to focus on yourself in order to help her."

"What kind of fucking backwards thinking is that? She might be dead already if not tortured for the information she has. I can think of a lot of things they could do to make her talk including rape, so don't you dare fucking tell me that I should think of myself." She snarled sparks were dancing in her hair and a wind had picked up causing dirt to form into dust that swirled around her. Eragon backed up and held his hands out.

"Calm, Avery listen, I understand somewhat, when I left with Brom I left my entire village behind but there is nothing you can do for her now, we need to plan and you need to learn more in order to help your friend." She flung herself at him and started beating on him. Tears streamed from her face and she dissolved into sobs. My little one felt confusion and guilt, and the tiny bit of interest he held for her grew. I sighed and waited out the storm of tears wondering what would be next.

"She's my best closest friend Eragon, she's basically my sister. I can't just leave her in the company of people who would kill her." She stopped sobbing and looked at him.

"Avery we don't know where she's at, she might be in the capital but they might have taken her almost anywhere. The elves will help but for now there is nothing we can do. Your power is uncontrolled and we must attend to it. I wish I could do more but I cannot. Our battle is here for Saphira and I, we cannot let you wander the land without protection. For now you are here and I just hope that you can forgive me for bringing this upon you." I puzzled through the myriad of emotions swirling within my hatchling. He had grown and was becoming more of a fledgling each day.

"It's not you who has to answer for this, it's that bastard Murtagh, he's mine, I've never killed but for him I'll learn to." She said, I sensed the waves of anger and utter loathing she felt.

"Little one she must be watched closely her rage may lead to her death. She must be taught how to balance her emotions as you were." I felt him acknowledge and turn to her.

"Killing him will not heal you Avery, you must know this." He said gently but still with a touch of condescension which he had sadly gained during his time with the elves.

"Again your telling me how to feel, who do you think you are, fuck off Eragon." She snarled wiping stray tears that still clung to her lashes. She turned away and started walking in a random direction. My hatchling followed a few paces away still stinging from her rebuke. He was growing yet he still had much to learn.

"Controversial female, first she flings herself at me as if to kill me, then sobs in my arms, now she dismisses me." I snorted somewhat amused at his frustrated bewilderment enjoying his struggling, he would have to grow strong and wise if he wished to truly grow. We followed Avery as she walked around the camp, my hatchling was so enthralled by the quandary the girl proposed that he didn't notice as she looked over the defenses in place. I however keenly marked her and wondered how far she may go to rescue her friend, up to and including escape. It would be the scale-less ones problem, unless Eragon caught my aid in retrieving her I would watch, however fearsome this war was pleasure could be derived from the small pieces of life, including how frustrated this female made my little one.

"Are you hungry?" Eragon asked as he heard her stomach rumbling, Avery had said naught being stubborn and prideful. I could see clear she would not bend to acknowledge him even for food.

"I could eat." She said tone flat. I approved of her stubborn pride dragons bowed to no one. That drunken night before the scale-less leaders funeral did not count, for I did not and would not remember it. My little one's thoughts roiled with new frustration towards her. Words like mewl, stubborn, frustrating female, slid through his thoughts. I sent a wash of amusement to him wishing for him to see this from my vantage. He frowned at me as we walked towards more sacks, tents, that held scents of food. I too could do with more meat.

"Eragon, I must hunt. Thorne and Murtagh are not here I will be safe, stay with her."

"Must I? Fine, stay safe Saphira, come back as soon as you can." I sent a wordless confirmation then took to the sky. I sped away into the mountains using the magic of air currents to push me along. I was soon in fresh air and amongst the trees. I indulged in a few silly acrobatics that I would never be able to perform with Eragon on my back. Then I floated towards the ground sighting a herd of very large deer. I closed my wings and prepared to capture my meal.

Evening breezes bore me back to my hatchling and as I glided above the tents I scented him in one closest to the center most tent which was largest. The evenings were cold and so many fires dotted the encampment. Eragon was outside of another tent holding a large cloth bundle in his arms arguing with someone on the inside. I had felt his annoyance faintly throughout my hunt.

"Avery I have clothes that are more suitable please will you just take them. Your clothes have blood stains and are ripped, you are proving nothing but that you are letting your pride and stubbornness get in the way of sense." I gazed curious how this would play out.

"Fine just leave them there then." He sighed set the bundle down on a piece of canvas, then stomped back to his tent. A few minutes later Avery's tent flap twitched, then her face peered out eyes squinting in the gloom. She saw the bundle, snatched it, then went back into her tent. I heard the shifting of fabric and a sigh, then very quiet crying. I wished to comfort her which was odd to feel, I usually did not feel much for the scale-less ones around me, the little ones yes, but the grown ones, no. I decided to settle near Eragon's tent and so rested my head, one eye on Avery's tent.

Hours had passed, the dim night was littered with small sounds, shifting men, conversations, soft singing. Then I heard a sound close by and lifted my eyelid a little to gaze at Avery's tent. Her shadow was creeping soundless through the space between her tent and Eragon's. I snorted soundlessly amused at my current assertion that she would try to run. However foolish it was, she was stubborn, loyal, and brave. I followed her with my eyes and a light mental touch as she wove through the camp surprisingly deft in her movements. A span of minutes later I heard Eragon stirring and pretended to sleep closing my eye. I heard him cross his tent, then relieve himself. He pulled on clothing, then exiting his tent. I heard him cross to Avery's tent and gently pull back the flap concern for her coming across the bond. I sent sleepy contentment. A sharp oath cut through the air along with a surge of, anger, frustration, fear, and concern rushed through him.

"Saphira! She's gone!" I could sense Avery was through the barriers somehow and was moving fast towards the river. I stood offering a leg feeling his urgency and knowing we would gain her within seconds. I took to the air with a large leap, beating my wings to gain height. I could see her running and stumbling now and then. She glanced behind her not seeing me but hearing the beat of my wings. I dove circling to land a few feet away from her. I did so with a thud which had her stumbling yet she righted herself turning and dashing away. My hatchling leapt off me and sped after her easily catching her, she punched him, which socked him. He let her go and once more she set off. Eragon spoke three words in the ancient language which halted her and lifted her a few feet in the air. She cursed at him fowling the air with her vitriol.

"Stop it, what did you think you would do? You have little idea where you are or where Amber is. If you don't stop your pride, and stubbornness will see you killed, then who will save Amber." Avery slumped in her bonds tears sliding down her cheeks, then pattering to the ground.

"I can't stand idly by, I can't." Desperation, fear, and despair oozed from her. Her hair hid part of her face, I could yet see the anguish that furrowed her brows. Eragon sighed and turned walking back to my side, Avery still in the air coming in his wake.

"Then train, learn how to use weapons, and your magic. The elves are masters in both, they can train you faster than any human. I will make sure to do my best to locate Amber for you. For now that is the most you, and myself can do." Eragon leapt into the saddle, then lifted his arms to receive a still immobile Avery. He loosed the magic on her taking her weight, He put her in front of him and wrapped his arm around her. I leapt into the air gliding back into the encampment. I alit quite softly which had me preening in my prowess and skill. Eragon cradled Avery once more and leapt to the ground. Then he let her go stepping back a pace.

"Thank you, Amber is usually there to stop my more stupid stunts, and I owe you." She then landed a blow on his chest making him grunt in surprise but not pain.

"Why did you hit me?" He said bewildered.

"For using your magic on me, and manhandling me, don't do that again." Eragon smiled and nodded.

"I apologize, now we shall sleep and in the morning we start training you." With these words the humans left me to my pondering.
