The Demon's Blood

"So what have you seen while watching over her?" A calming voice questioned from across the room. Through the flickering flames the voice's owner met with the three eyes gazing back at him.

"...Does that matter?" Came a gruff response.

"Of course it matters. You've been watching over her closely, especially these last 52 days. You've placed a great deal of emphasis of your progress on her response to you as an individual. A choice, I might remind you, which I warned you may only hurt your growth and your coaching." He scribbled some notes down on paper before trying to meet his gaze again. The three eyed boy sighed before clicking his fingers. As soon as he had done so the flames in the room seemed to grow brightly revealing the two occupants to each other.

"She's been through a lot. A lot more than I ever thought she'd be able to deal with. She had her wand giving ceremony. I thought that maybe she'd invite me to that, that maybe that would be my chance to show Starship that I've changed but she never did." Tom started to explain. He may not have been in attendance but he was watching. He had been using a small Demon to watch them. Floating in the corner, through it's eyes, Tom had watched as she'd unleashed chaos onto Butterfly Castle and laughed a lonely laugh unheard by any.

"How did it make you feel to not be invited Tom?" Alan asked with a gentle smile. He might finally get the break through the boy desperately needed. He reached up and scratched at his horn, a tell sign he was excited.

"Obviously I was angry. I felt hurt and abandoned. I know we broke up but we had always done royal events together ever since the Silver Bell Ball. I'd had her back and she had mine. Neither of us really enjoyed the formal events but we had each other. We could take a breather, pretend we were bonding and strengthening our Kingdoms' relationships. Then when we started dating the adults just let us do what we wanted. I know I was the one who messed up and pushed her too far but she's never not forgiven me before." Alan jotted down the response. Finally, true progress.

"Interesting. So you felt like by not inviting you she had cast aside your past together? And what of the boy? This Marco Diaz as the Mewni people call him. Sir Marco, The Red Knight of the Princess?" Alan knew he was pushing him. That this might just boil over his anger and ruin their limited development but it was a worthy risk. When he'd been approached by the Underworld Royalty and appointed as the Prince's life coach he had expected a brat ruled by his own ego. Someone who he could never change but when he met him, he was nothing like the rumours. The boy had sat in a dark room for hours playing back footage his Demonic spies had recorded with their magic eyes. He'd replay the girls laughter, a soothing melody that helped him rest. He was obsessed but he was also in pain. He realised why he of all people had been asked to help the Prince. Most other Demon's would have just laughed at the Prince and told him to go and take her by force. Tom knew it would only seal the end of their bond. He was reckless, childish, selfish but Alan just put that down to immaturity and inexperience. Given time, and a careful nod in the right direction, Alan believed the Prince of the Underworld would change like no one could ever believe.

"Cast aside? More like never existed. Starship had invited me to most events as her plus one even after our break to keep up appearances but this time she invited him. Marco. I wanted to burn him alive and watch his charred body fall before me. To end his life the first time I ever saw her smile for him. The bounce lounge was one of our places but they met there. He was just a helpful stranger but after watching I realised something strange." Tom admitted as he stood up. He walked to the window and looked out at the rocky terrain of the Underworld.

"Something strange?"

"Yes. I couldn't bring myself to hate him."

"Could you elaborate, my Prince?"

"He tried to protect her, although Starship hardly needs protecting. If that was me I would have set the boy who touched her ablaze and then smugly turned to Star expecting gratitude but instead he tried to leave. Thinking he'd ruined their evening. He didn't have an ulterior motive like I would have had and instead of yelling at him that, she didn't need his help, she asked him to stay and even gave him the invite to the ceremony." Tom turned back to see Alan staring at him perplexed.

"If you do not hate him… what do you think of the boy?"

"I'm not exactly sure. I'm curious about his past yet I know I'm not the only one. Several people from royalty, to secret magic dudes to ones less desirable are all seeking to answer the one question on all our minds. Who is Marco Diaz? So far he's the boy who helped Star to start mastering her magic. He's helping her hone her strength. So he's her teacher. He's supported her through the loss of her grandfather and cheered her up when it seemed no one else could. I wanted to go myself but I knew I wouldn't have been able to find the words to unbreak her heart. Ever since he showed up Star has been seen as a capable and passionate Princess. She's thought to be growing wise in his company and everyone loves her. She's becoming the girl I always knew she could be… without me…" Tom whispered the final to words as if too scared to speak then aloud.

"I think we've finally found the true source of your current emotions. You are scared that she, and if I may presume, everyone is moving on without you. You are being left behind and abandoned. With all those souls inside you, those who were abandoned by life and your own negative feelings syncing together you have an unbelievable level of fear which easily turns to anger and rage." Tom sat down opposite him again and looked back into his eyes. He was a lesser Demon, not an insult but his class and rank. From birth Demons have a set level of talent and skill. A potential to grow into, some like Tom and Mephisto were considered limitless. Their only handicap was the effort they were willing to put in themselves. However, Tom, coming from royal lineage, had the advantage of being born with immense magical power and control already engraved into his body. His third eye was a sign of his higher status but he didn't look down on the lesser demons, sometimes he even felt jealous of them. They weren't born with the same expectations he was. He was told he could achieve anything so of course his people expected him to achieve everything. And, because of this, the Lesser demons led very different lives that he could not really understand. All of the High Demon coaches had not been able to understand Tom's emotions because they had never had something they couldn't obtain with brute strength and force. Alan was the first to see some good in him and he wanted to try his best to be open with his new coach, more open than he felt he could have been with any other coach.

"So what? I have to learn to get over being left behind?"

"It's a choice you could make yes." Alan confirmed for him.

"What's the other option?"

"You could take action, try to change the situation in the right way." Tom flinched as he finished his sentence.

"You know?"

"About the Blood Moon Curse you intend to bind yourself with so you soul bond with the Princess. Of course I know, I am also a Demon Tom. Only non-demons would think the dance was just another ball. I just don't know if this is the right way to overcome your emotions."

"I'm not either.. but it's the best I can do. So when morning comes I will rise to Mewni and ask her to join me. I can only hope she says yes." Alan shut his book. This session had ended and he only had one thing left to say.

"I can only hope you aren't about to make a terrible mistake."

The next morning felt like just another day to the residents of the Butterfly Kingdom. Marco looked away from his workstation and out to the sky on Mewni. The usual pink sky had an unfamiliar guest hanging in it's midst. Marco stared at the crescent red moon and wondered if it had any significance. Surely a moon such as that was an odd feature even on the colourful dimension of Mewni. He hadn't read anything about it in his investigations and research during Star's study sessions so he figured it must be connected to either a strange event or uncommon ritual that occurs. He made a note to ask Moon later on that day, as asking Star or River usually led to them having to go on a strange quest to find the answer which more often than not ended up with them asking Moon for the answer anyway. Marco smirked as he remembered the odd happenings that often occurred and wondered if these trouble-less times would continue.

Marco turned back to the table and picked up his heat crystal. It was a gift from Moon, it acted as a replacement for a soldering iron and he had loved it. He'd started to customise his gear more to adapt to the bigger array of adventures he and Star found themselves on. It was a bit conflicting for him as it meant he planned to stick around her but he kept telling himself it was just for the one year duration. He went to continue his latest project when there was a light knock at the door. He opened it to find the maid from the sleep spell incident waiting for him.

"Good Morning Sir Marco. It is the requested time." Marco thanked the girl and rushed to get ready. After the incident the maid had asked if there was anything she could do to show how thankful she was for his efforts to protect her and fix the situation. He couldn't think of anything at first but then came up with the idea to have her notify him when it was time to wake up Star. She had protested that it wasn't enough to repay him but he assured her it was plenty. Marco quickly changed out of his work clothes and slid his usual attire on before heading to get Star.

The morning carried on like normal from that moment forth as the Princess ran through the castle with Marco in tow to meet her parents. Everyone had grown so used to their routine that Marco barely had to interfere with the path anymore. The servants and castle staff knew how to dodge her and had even added a few new features to assist it. As Star flew down slid down the banister of the stairwell she jumped off onto a cushioned mattress and carried on running. Marco waved to the knights as they put it away until the next morning. During training Marco had told them all of her habits and they'd put into practice some new methods of reigning in Star's carnage. Some methods like the mattress was to ensure her safety and others, like closing off the hallway during the morning rush, were for everyone else's safety and without incident the Princess and Marco arrived at breakfast. Star crashed through the doors but this time the Knight guarding inside was holding the vase that she would almost always break and put it down gently.

"Good morning Star!"

"Morning Pumpkin! What adventures do you have planned today?" Moon and River smiled widely as their children joined them at the table. Star started to dig in straight away after saying hello leaving Marco to answer their questions.

"Good morning Moon, Good morning River. Today? We were thinking of just seeing if the Knights needed any help with the routine patrols. Star wanted to get a better understanding of the duties of the people in the Kingdom." Both her parents looked at her surprised. She quickly gulped down her corn and prepared to explain. Marco took the chance where she was going to talk to start eating himself.

"Yeah, Like Marco said I want to look into what the Knights and other staff do. After troubling everyone with my sleep spells I figured I should know what the citizens and castle's people do. Marco and I went around the markets and we got to see all the amazing stuff people have brought into our kingdom and what they send out and it got me thinking. If I'm going to be Queen some day I can't afford to overlook the people like that who are trying their best. So I want to know more than just spells and history. I want to know what our Kingdom is today." Star beamed a smile before digging into more corn. Moon felt her heart almost burst once more with both pride and love. Her daughter was finally thinking of these things, things that happened once she was Queen. Gone was the girl who would have burnt down the castle by accident and laughed it off and in her place was an incredible young woman who was thinking of everyone inside their Kingdom. River, on the other hand, found himself looking at Marco. He was more confident than ever that he had found the one who would stand by Star's side and guide her into the future. He had been there for Moon during her worst day and now stood by her at her best and he knew Marco could be that person for Star.

"Well, Star I'm very proud of you! That is such a commendable decision." Star smiled with glee at her praise. She turned and faced Marco. He gave a thumbs up back at her and they continued eating. Neither had talked about what had happened at the lake. The thoughts they shared there or the way things had ended. They were avoiding bringing it up thinking it would just be another argument. The plan was to get through the day with no surprises and no hostility. Unfortunately for them, plans often go wrong.

"Pardon my intrusion but there is a guest for both the Princess and Mr. Diaz." Manfred announced to the room. He puffed out his chest as he stood firmly. Marco watched as his little feather hat danced from the movement and tried to think of who the guest could be.

"Inform them we will be with them shortly, thank you Manfred." Star replied. He bowed in acknowledgement and then departed from the room.

"Expecting guests?" Moon asked as they continued eating.

"Not that I can think of… Pony Head wouldn't come through the proper channels. Kelly is too shy to come to the castle unannounced and I can't think of anyone else who would." Star thought deeply as she finished off her food. Marco wondered who Kelly was but more so who would want to see them both.

Meanwhile, in the official waiting hall, a three eyed demon paced back and forth nervously. He'd wanted to come in style, appear from the ground in flames, with a carriage pulled by an undead skeleton horse. He'd have waltzed through the kingdom leaving scorch marks in his wake and finally took her by the hand and asked her to the ball. But, Tom knew it wouldn't have worked. Not on the Star of today. She'd matured, at least enough, that if he tried to act like that he'd probably get turned into an ice cube and left to cool off.

So instead of trying to impress Star with over confidence and style Tom had decided an official and considerate approach would be much more meaningful. If he wanted to reach the Star who he had been watching he'd have to change too. He was tired of being left behind.

Tom had never really taken the time to look around the waiting hall of the Kingdom. He'd usually just fly straight to wherever Star was or spend his time pestering the Castle staff to get the girl to hurry up. It occurred to him he'd never bothered to look at the decor of the hall. The history that was being shown across the walls. He knew that the Butterfly Kingdom liked telling the story of their Queen's upon tapestry but the one before him was beautiful. It was a map of Mewni from here all the way to his own Kingdom. He could see that it was hand woven and that each Kingdom had been decorated with various colours and symbols that represented their culture. He held his hand up to stitches that spelled out his Kingdom's name and realised that it had been sewn with the silk of a Demon Maggot, a type of larva that would produce warm thread that could be spun into silk that never lost its heat. This tapestry didn't just show and try to convey the culture of the Kingdoms it showed it was created with a piece of each one. Tom wondered how many people walked past this and never stopped to admire the beauty of it all.

"I think that part is really something else." Tom turned to see himself come face to face with the boy who had plagued his mind and emotions so much in the weeks passed.

"Do you? What about it?" Tom found himself asking without much thought. He'd been surprised to see the boy first and wasn't sure how to react.

"The silk thread used. It's a special material from the Underworld. It's produced in abundance from the Demon Maggot but because of people's twisted views they refuse to use it for clothing. The product of both a demon and a maggot turns people off but if they were just willing to embrace what was different they'd realise that it would be pretty beneficial to make thermal clothing from it."

"Thermal clothing?"

"Oh… it's a term from where I come from. It refers to clothing made from materials that would help protect against certain temperatures. For example, the silk could be used to create a tight fitting under clothing that while unseen by others would make the wearer more adapted to move around in cold temperatures." Tom's brain started to process the possibilities of what he was saying. If what he said was true and could be utilised then it could be an industry changing produce his Kingdom could profit from. Like he had said, the silk was abundant, they often destroyed it because it had little use to them but if they managed to market and sell it they would turn a huge profit. Tom quickly pondered a little test.

"How would you overcome people's negative view on this?" Marco looked at him curiously. It was a layered question. Anyone could give an answer but he wanted his opinion and it seemed he could also understand the value of what Marco had explained.

"Well where I come from royalty is a dying tradition. It's the people who lead the people but here you have key figures of influence who set trends and styles. People here tend to see what their leaders do and follow. If you were able to change the view of a few royalty, at least those from two Kingdoms then I imagine once people knew that the people at the top could see value and desired it then any negative views they had on it would become just an unimportant thought and it would be marketable." Marco had wanted to make himself some thermal gear from the silk but it turns out that he isn't able to do everything well like Star seemed to believe. Simple clothing fixes, check but making tight, body fighting clothes that didn't hinder his movement out of silk from a Demon Maggot was something he hadn't been able to grasp let alone master.

Tom didn't want to admit it but he could see what Marco proposed as being a very effective move to try and change the populous' perspective. He could easily get several people in the Underworld to try and make a product he could market and within a few weeks start distribution of the thermal clothing. Before Tom could reply or thank Marco for his advice a flurry of golden blonde ran in between them both and stood arms out as if shielding the boy from his presence. He looked at her face and was disappointed to see both worry and annoyance written across her face.

"Nope-nope-nope-nope-nope. You need to leave right now. We broke up! Period! So go back to the Underworld Tom." Star informed him before he even had a chance to greet her. Upon hearing his name Marco figured out who he was. Star's jerk of an ex boyfriend, but oddly, Marco had thought that he seemed alright and had been enjoying their conversation.

"Woah Starship, Just give me a chance to explain myself, please?" Tom asked calmly, his voice was smooth as he held up his hands and smiled to show his good intent. Star was a little caught off guard by his demeanour, as she had been expecting him to blow up like always. Before she could refuse she felt a small tapping on her shoulder and turned to see Marco.

"Star, I think we should hear him out. He did come here through formal channels and wait for us. Plus I would like to finish the conversation we were having." Marco requested. Star looked like it pained her to agree but she motioned for them to follow her to the meeting room. She held the door open for Marco before taking a seat and letting Tom catch it. Tom mouthed 'thank you' to Marco without her noticing and he nodded in response.

"Thank you Marco, You are as kind as the rumour says. Star I'm not here to cause trouble I'm just here to invite you both to the Blood Moon Ball" Tom held up his hand making a flaming crescent moon to illustrate to them.

"It's an event that only happens once every 667 years, so for you, it's once in a lifetime. I planned to invite you there when we were together but I know that's over now and I'd like to make amends." Tom smiled hopefully to be a little crestfallen once more to see Star returning his smile with a scowl.

"Amends? A likely story." She scoffed.

"Hang on, I'm a changed man, okay? I've got a life coach, I've been working through my emotions and trying to improve myself. I've been anger-free for 53 days." Tom revealed a sigil on his shirt that turned from some flaming runes to spell out '53 Days Anger Free'.

"Please Star, give me a chance to prove that I've got myself under control." Tom could see he was convincing her but knew just how much she had changed. The old Star would have agreed to go just because it might have been fun and was unique. Tom knew that the Star of today would require an actual explanation for his behaviour.

"You should go…" Marco said softly to her. She looked at him betrayed. He held his hands up defensively.

"Woah chill Star. I'm just saying. He's trying to make amends and you said he was a Prince. Wouldn't it be a good idea to improve diplomatic relations with allied Kingdoms with something fun like a ball?" Clever, Tom thought, play to her desire to improve. It was slight manipulation that carried a lot of truth. Each moment he spent with the boy he realised how impressive he was but at the same time how dangerous he was. He could see Star had agreed with him the moment he said it. If you could sweet talk the Rebel Princess then you could easily sway the masses into whatever agenda you wanted. Tom knew he had no reason to doubt Marco but part of him grew immediately weary of the boy's potential.

"Well, no matter what you decide I hope to see you there Starship. No pressure, but if you decide to come just toll this bell, with this little hammer." Tom laid down a small black bell and a tiny skull-shaped hammer. He stood up and walked to the door before turning to the pair.

"A pleasure to meet you Marco, I hope to see you there too, and Starship, before you decide to just write me off as the jerk I was, just remember, I'm not the only one with horns." He pointed up at her headband before bowing and leaving.

The sun began to set as evening was soon creeping in. Marco entered Star's room as she stood looking at her dresses. She had a variety of colours and styles fit for a princess but was trying to think of what would both go with the theme and location.

"I still think this is a big mistake." Star muttered to herself. Marco heard her and sighed.

"Star, it could help you out a lot in the future to be on good terms with the future ruler of the Underworld and you never know, it could be fun?" It was Star's turn to sigh. She knew he was right and deep down she really wanted to go. She wanted to see what a special ball in the Underworld was like. She'd really started to appreciate the lives and culture of her own Kingdom and was eager to explore even more of others. She finally took a pink ball gown off of the rack and turned to face him.

"Wait.. why are you still wearing those clothes? Why haven't you gotten ready?" Star asked him, lowering her dress down onto the bed. Marco looked down to see his usual attire and understood what she meant.

"Look Star… I'm not going. I feel like I'd only ruin your night if I went. Tom probably only invited me because he was worried you wouldn't go if he didn't invite me too." Marco knew this wasn't true. He had been genuinely intrigued by the Prince and felt the situation was the same for Tom. He also knew the invitations they were given were prepared beforehand. They had been allowed to have them once the castle knights had checked them for any poison.

"But what about everything you just said? About how this could be important and that it could be fun?" She looked at the time and realised she was running a little late. She pushed a button on her inter-dimensional mirror, converting it into a three-panel divider. Marco turned around to give her privacy and Star started to change. She threw her outfit off in a rage causing her clothes to scatter around the room.

"I'm sorry Star but royal diplomatic relations aren't really anything to do with me. I know that the people here call me Sir Marco but it's a nickname. I'm no one… and it's not really my kind of fun. It's a different kind." Star finished putting on her dress and carefully used her magic to blast her hair into a top knot with ease. The days where she would feel side effects were over, Star had grown to be able to control most simple spells with as much ease as breathing. Some didn't even require the chants any more. This did lower their efficiency but they were still useful nonetheless.

"Marco, you were invited. Trust me this could be fun for us both." She stepped out from behind the divider and waited for him to turn around. Marco heard her move and spun his head to see her standing there, ready for the dance. Her dress covered only one shoulder, simply decorated at the top by a pink love heart, matching her cheek marks with simplicity. Star's gown was shorter than her usual dresses, resting just above her knees. The lighter pink frills that adorned the bottom seemed to dance by themselves as she twirled. Marco couldn't help but be captivated by her movement. Some of Star's dresses seemed to honour the innocence of her age but this dress, much like her horns seemed to suggest a more intimate side to her. The bow around her waist, once again decorated with her signature heart, seemed to capture her figure as she slid the last of her long elbow length white gloves up her arms. Her boots made her taller as she stood before him, waiting for him to comment on her beauty, yet part of Star was wrapped in fear, a small worry that Marco would see her and not accept her. An unfounded fear it seemed.

"You look… amazing.. Beautiful even.." Her heart seemed to leap in excitement but her mind knew it wasn't the end of his sentence.

"But Star… I just don't think we should go together… not after the other day and I'd probably just get in your way. I'm gonna head back to my room. Have fun Star.." He seemed to flee from the room, tearing his eyes away from her figure as he closed the door behind him.

"Don't go." Star whispered as he left the room swiftly. She felt her heart ache a little as she felt the distance between them shift again. It felt like no matter what she did there was always something keeping them from moving forward. From becoming closer than what someone else's story decided for them. She turned to leave before looking at the door once more.

"Coward." She whispered coldly. She knew it was cruel to even think it but part of her felt like he pushed her away out of fear, a fear she couldn't understand. She reached for the bell and rang it, surprised by the deep resonating gong it rang out. Outside, in a pillar of fire, a small elevator cart carried by a red winged demon appeared. The cart dinged open and lowered a short drawbridge.

"Let's get this show on the road." Star said enthusiastically.

"Which floor, mortal?" The small winged demon questioned.

"Uh, I guess the bottom." Star climbed in and watched the door close as the elevator lowered into the Underworld in a pillar of fire.

Down in the Underworld the various denizens of darkness were gathering at the Hall of the Blood Moon. A demonic ceremonial hall only ever used for this one night every 667 years. From the hottest depths of the Underworld to the top of the freezing cold peaks, Demons and Monsters came for their chance to bath under the red light. Some were driven by the chance at the bond but others were here because they knew that anyone who was anyone and didn't mind a fiery pit of hell would be here. A chance for people with less than ideal intentions to meet and conspire.

Hunter looked up from his communication device and at the castle-like building in front of him. It was decorated with a ruby like crescent moon surrounded by three flames and two spiky horns. A clear representation of what this ball really was. A curse by demons and fire to bind you within. An interesting tradition that had been turned into a rather gory celebrated event. He walked past the shattered remains of a skeleton as a man with a spiked mace nodded to him. He wondered if it was just decoration or if the skeleton himself had been a living skeleton. He'd met those, easy to kill once you crushed their skulls into bone meal.

Hunter buttoned up his wool trench coat. It was a dark grey colour, had a lapel style collar and front double breasted closure. He brushed some ash off of his three button cuffs and smiled. He had made sure not to spill the blood of the previous owner of the jacket. It had been his most treasured trophy from a hunt. It wasn't one he wore often but he had a feeling that just this coat alone would be enough to draw in the subject if he saw it. He liked the weight of it and the fact it concealed the many weapons he had attached to his body. He looked ahead as a reptilian like thing in a suit passed through the doors into the hall. He would follow and wait for his subject. It seemed like it could be a fun night. He made way for the Lucitor brat to pass outside as he went inside.

"Master Tom, Princess Butterfly has arrived." An axe demon announced as he drew closer. Tom watched as the elevator lowered to the ground and Star stepped out. He took one look at her in her dress and smiled.

"Star Butterfly, You look beautiful." He bowed to greet her which she returned with a curtsy. She looked around at the Blood Moon Hall and responded with a wow at the site. Star had been to the Underworld many times but she realised much like the beauty she was discovering in her own Kingdom the Underworld had places they treasured too. Tom peered into the elevator to see it empty before looking at Star who met his gaze. She looked a little irritated. Tom realised his mistake and that to bring up the absence of the boy would be the worst decision he could make.

"What is it?" Tom thought quickly and pulled out a horned spider. It was clear Marco hadn't come. That and that it annoyed her greatly. Personally this worked out better for him. He was surprised, he was a little disappointed he didn't get to continue talking to him, but now Star was his alone to entertain.

"It's a hair thing. It goes in your hair, It'll help you fit in down here." Star looked at it and thought it was a little gross but she remembered what Marco said about trying to build a good relationship.

"How sweet, Tom… Do you want to help me put it on." Star said reluctantly. She didn't really want it anywhere near her but was willing to try and build bridges. Tom was happy she accepted it however for the first time in perhaps forever realised it was only him who wanted that. He smiled as he tossed it into the flaming abyss through a crack in the ground.

"You know what, forget that, you have your own thing and we should just go have some fun." Tom offered her his hand instead of the horned spider and Star accepted. She was glad not to have to wear the gross spider but more glad that for once Tom was seeing her, for her.

Marco sat alone inside one of the halls inside the Butterfly castle. He closed his eyes and tried to reason with himself about the choices he had made. By now Star would be on her way to the Underworld and he wouldn't have a chance to stop her.

He told himself as he reached for some of the nachos he had made earlier. He threw them up and caught them in his mouth before continuing to ponder the situation.

"Marco?" He opened his eyes, breaking away from his mental conversation to see River looking at him perplexed.

"What are you still doing here? Didn't you and Pumpkin head down to that ball?" River noticed Marco sigh and slump his shoulders. River hadn't always been the smartest person but he had his instinct and he knew how to read people. He felt like he knew what was wrong.

"Hmm.. let me guess. While saying you were looking out for our Star, you chose not to go and left her to go ahead, alone and are now regretting that choice." Marco just nodded in response.

"I see.. well it's not too late, go after her." River instructed.

"I can't.. I made a choice already.." River looked down at him with a smile.

"You can't? Well I am shocked. The great Marco Diaz, Red Knight of the Butterfly Kingdom can't do something?" River watched as his brow twitched in annoyance. He had heard from Star about Marco's dislike for both his title and the grandness given to it.

"Well, in my opinion I think you are running away my boy. It's clear that your friendship with Pumpkin has grown more deeply of late and it's probably more than you bargained for. I may not be as smart as Moon or as wise as Glossaryck but I am a leader nonetheless. I have led men into battles and seen those forged by the flames of war. When we met it was clear you were one of those who had been raised through hardship but whose heart instead of crumbling like coal in a fire solidified into a diamond, strong and bright." Marco stood up to follow after River as he started walking towards the window. They stood and gazed out onto the kingdom as the sun began to set, showering the kingdom in a blazing orange light.

"You have been on the move so long, taking a break feels wrong. You've put your own life and goals on hold for our Star and now you are facing things you would normally have run from a long time ago."

"Wait.. how do you know all that?" Marco asked, suddenly worried his secrets had been revealed.

"No one gets as smart and capable as you by just staying in one place. Yet no one is as withdrawn and careful as you are without having something to hide. If you don't know what the men you serve with will do in each situation you are lacking as a military leader. I know which knights will fight, which will flee and those who will turn the tide of battle. You learn to read those around you or you suffer the consequences." River raised his beard and pull down his shirt to reveal large claw marks across his chest.

"Sometime you make the mistake of trusting someone which can cost you your life. You should be careful but not at the cost of losing what's important." River finished explaining as the last of the daylight hue faded to dark.

"But what is important?" Marco asked River sincerely. Ever since he had saved the boy and risked his life for him during Star's unexpected growth, Marco had found himself trusting River's guidance a bit more. He had grown fond of both River and Moon, yet denied himself the connection to them he had started to desire.

"It's simple, you m'boy!"

"Me?"

"Yes, You. No one should be more important to you than you. Life is a gift and choosing not to live it out of fear or obligation is nothing more than harm of oneself. Right now, and dig deep to find the answer, what do you want to do?"

Marco started to grumble as he tried to think of an answer when River grabbed hold of his shoulders and locked eyes with the boy. As if gazing into his soul and tearing out the answer the words seem to leave Marco's lips.

"I want to go to her.." Marco was paralysed by his own truth as a mysterious red light started to shower from the sky.

"A blood moon tonight, the moon of lovers" Marco saw River looking out onto the sky and turned his head to see a red crescent moon peering down at him. He felt some connection to it that he had never felt before. It was as if it had started to draw him in as he was hypnotised by its light. Without realising Marco had already started to move towards her room where the small bell awaited when River jumped onto him causing them to crash.

"Wait Marco, you need a change of clothes and to know how to dance if you are headed to a ball." Marco looked down at his red hoodie and agreed that indeed it was not the right attire. River clicked his fingers and the castle staff rushed forward to bring him to a changing room. They held up many outfits to see what would suit him as Marco was puzzled by how prepared they were with outfits for him. After going through all the choices and none of the staff agreeing the door burst open to reveal the maid Marco had saved before, she rushed forward and held up a set of black dress robes with golden embroidery lining the edges. Murmurs of agreement filled the room as they left him to get changed.

"Smile" growled the creature clad in red from behind the canvas. From beneath its shroud its many arms sprung forth each armed with a utensil for drawing. Within seconds upon the canvas the figures before it were captured as blood poured down from above bathing them in its warm blessing.

"Star, we don't have to do this if you don't want to. I don't want the blood to ruin your dress." Tom said awkwardly as they walked to have their likeness drawn.

"Oh Tom! Don't be silly it's not real blood!" Star chuckled before seeing him look sheepishly.

"It's real?"

"Well I thought about trying to change things to make them more.. likeable for you but then I realised when I was looking at the map of Mewni and it's Kingdoms that it's our uniqueness that defines us and if I try to show you a tradition that I've dressed up then am I really showing you a tradition for what it represents." Tom tried to explain to her. His talk with Marco had impacted him quite harshly as he was now conflicted about his whole goal tonight.

"I see.. in that case let me just make a little adjustment." Star grabbed Tom and jumped onto the platform as the blood started to pour. Tom covered his eyes as the Red clad artist sketched away. Tom opened his eyes and saw that the blood had splashed everyone around them who were laughing as Star span with her wand above reflecting the red fluid with its shape.

"Star, what is that?" He questioned as she skipped to look at their likeness.

"Apparently it's called an Umbrella. Marco told me about it. He said it's used to stop rain from soaking you. He can't make me a real one yet but I learnt to make one with my magic." She chuckled at Tom's drawing as he tried to dodge the blood. Tom saw her smile as she spoke about him and guilt filled his heart when he felt a tap on his shoulder.

"Master Tom.. we need to talk." Alan noticed the conflict growing on his face and decided to try to talk to him once more.

"Star.. I'll be back in just a minute." Star nodded before bouncing off to see what else the Blood Moon Ball had to offer.

She approached a table and noticed a skeleton fish swimming around the boiling liquid inside. She decided to see if it was drinkable by putting some food she found inside it and when it melted away she made the choice to pass on the drink.

"Here he comes again!" Star chuckled as a small demon was seeing what she was doing.

"His name's Henry." She told him as the skeleton fish kept swimming. In the distance she heard someone yelling and screaming. She looked to see a horn hatted demon or a demon with a hat with horns, either working in her opinion, screaming in front of a man in a heavy jacket.

Hunter frowned as he walked away from the bumbling buffoon as he cried about what was wrong with the ball. He'd been trying to find new allies but so far had been unfortunate enough to only run into fools and absolute morons. He bumped into some boy dressed in black and gold with a skull for a head and apologised before heading towards the entrance. This was clearly a wasted endeavour. He had just reached the door when a loud voice rang out. He walked over back with the rest of the ballroom to the red faced demon who had addressed the audience.

"Ahem. Good evening, ladies and gentlebremen. It is my pleasure that I request you now to turn your heads skyward." Everyone gazed upwards as the roof began to creak and slid. The panels above opened to reveal a ruby red crescent moon, much like the one outside.

"When the light of the blood moon drubbles down and selects two lucky souls, binding them together for eternity in its hypnotic, ruby brodum."

"Whoaaa" Star uttered as music began to play. Tom's head spun towards the organ playing the music and rushed off.

"Don't go anywhere, I'll be right back" He called back. Star started to wander off and explore when a hand reached out and grabbed her, pulling her towards them. Star was suddenly holding hands with a stranger clad in black and gold. His face was hidden by the skull which was adorned on his head yet his eyes seemed to scream something to her. Before she had a chance to react to him or even take in his presence they both found themselves bathed in a red light as a new song began to play. He guided her across the dance floor as they moved in sync with the rhythm. She felt her heart flutter as he drew in close to her.

She had been to balls before but had never felt so in union with anyone like she was in that moment. Every step they took together was as if they were dancing across stars themselves scattered across the sky, there was nothing but them. Each key of the piano pressed was like a beat of her heart as he twirled her with a flick of his wrist. She put her hand onto his shoulder as he took a step back, once more guiding her across the floor. She felt at ease as he held her in his arms. As if no harm could befall her. She wasn't the all powerful princess before him, she was Star, a girl, a dancer, his partner. Through her white gloves she felt the heat of his body as between the holes of the skull he adorned she saw the red light shining back at her. She couldn't remember the original colour she had seen as now all she could see and feel was the mysterious power of the red light.

Marco felt like a puppet as they flew across the floor, every demon standing back to witness the spell that was being cast. He had no control over his body anymore, the music and the light were like strings controlling him and her, his Star, she was like the puppet master weaving her magical show. He felt her small slender body in his arms as he thought for the first time in a while how small she really was, the burdens she carried within her and the challenges she still had to face. As the music picked up and the alluring sounds seemed to force them deeper into its harmony the two found themselves spinning as the world around them blurred. They were becoming one.

"Star." Her name slipped from his lips as he called to her tenderly. The moment he spoke she felt her heart flutter with excitement. It took all of her strength to resist reacting to it. It was her mind that reasoned with her that no matter what it couldn't be him.

"How did you know my name?" She asked back, still caught in his spell. No amount of resisting could hold back the longing her felt to confirm what she felt.

"It's me, Marco." Pulling up the skull to reveal his face Star started to smile widely with excitement.

"Marco.. you actually came." She was completely shocked by his presence and more by the fact they kept dancing in union. She moved closer to him as their dancing form became more intimate. She couldn't believe he was really here. Her lips curled into a sweet and immensely happy smile as her head rested against him.

Tom watched on from the crowd feeling defeated. His heart seemed to scream with anguish as he knew he'd never see that smile shine for him. He had wanted Marco to come both to convince Star to come but to also see the boy more himself but even here he could tell that the Star that would fall for his charms was no more. She was a different person to the Starship he once knew yet his heart longed for her all the more.

His eyes locked with Alan, the lesser demon shook his head, as if reading his thoughts. Tom could hardly believe a time would have come when he would make this choice. If he interrupted this dance he could have everything he ever wanted but it would be tainted and ruined. Yet, the very act of interrupting could cost him everything.

Tom listened as the music he had chosen, the piece that was meant to represent his bond with Star, his love for her seemed to be coming to an end when all of a sudden the hall was filled with the sounds of additional instruments. As Marco led Star with his dominant hand to the very centre of the room the piece seemed to change. It slowed slightly as the higher keys of the piano echoed around the room leaving the violin to shake the very air they breathed. Tom felt his heart be pulled with the music as the other guests seemed to take to the floor. The light refused to shine on them as it followed the enamoured pair around but they did not seem to mind. Much like Tom the music seemed to be telling a story beyond his own now. The piece's tempo changed again back to a faster tone.
Tom cast his gaze to the organ only to find it empty and the keys being pushed as if by nothing. He chuckled slightly as he realised this piece was never for him. His three eyes fixed on the couple, he wiped away a tear as they glided from his left to his right. He dried his tears and rushed to the organ. He clicked his fingers together and then started to play the piece alongside whatever higher calling was serenading the pair. His accompaniment seemed to elevate the music and the room. Demons started to dance across the sky as Marco and Star looked up in awe as their dance continued. Beneath the mask, Marco could hardly control his smile. He felt her slender hand sink into his as he twirled her again. He wasn't sure what had driven him to this but he pulled her close and they continued across the floor. She leaned closer, resting her head on his shoulder, hoping to hide the tear of happiness that escaped her.

Entering the final notes the room seemed to stand still as Marco and Star stared into each other's eyes. Bonded, once more, in the moment.

Tom stood up from the organ and rushed to meet the pair with a smile on his face. He reached the edge of the circle that had formed around them and then found himself frozen in indecision, as if his feet were unable to take him towards them, like the light they were cast in was a force keeping him from interrupting. As Tom remained frozen someone else took the chance to push past him and head towards the couple.

The individual had been slowly making his way to the pair, using a simple but wide eyed demon as a dance partner to lessen the distance when in spite of the music he had heard the target's name. Marco. The princess of Mewni had confirmed the identity of the individual and now he was open prey. He had waited for his moment, when the pair froze and settled and the music lay completed.

"Diaz!" The voice cried out as the man rushed forward and threw Marco across the dance floor. He slid on the marble like floor before coming to a halt. Star moved quickly to strike the man but with grace much similar, if not more ruthless, to Marco he dodged her strike before knocking her into the punch table. Marco jumped to his feet to confront the man who had ruined their dance. The stone above began to close but the man threw a dagger cracking the blood moon jewel in half and causing himself to be shroud in darkness as Marco remained shrouded in a blood red.

The musician returned to the organ and began to play a sombre yet intense tune as if to give character to the moment before him. The Demon's faces seemed to contort and form into sinister smiles as they moved to block the Princess out.

"Who are you?" Marco questioned while taking a quick assessment of the situation. The person was strong, and trained. He knew how to fight and his style seemed oddly familiar. Something about it unsettled Marco. He couldn't quite make out his clothes or any distinguishing features. Someone so much a stranger but seeming to elude familiarity.

"I'm just a lonely hunter, excited to finally meet his prey." The Hunter laughed. His cruel glee echoed around the ballroom. After all this time, all those dimensions and wastelands he had finally found him. He had found the target. The demons watched on in good sport. Any violence was fun for them, they were willing to look past the ruining of their tradition as long as the bloodshed sated their thirst.

"Show yourself." Marco bit into his lip, his brain racked for the answer. He was desperately trying to avoid the one that seemed true. His body seemed to prepare itself for combat, as if he had trained for this moment and this moment alone for all his life. His instincts seemed to know and his brain did too but his heart, still caught in the light of Star's company, was holding him back.

"You first." He clicked his fingers and from the crowd came two large spears. The spears themselves looked like the severed tails of a poisonous beast. Marco was sure one hit was lethal enough to kill. It was clear they had been taken off of the wall, a decoration no more but more of a life ending sentence. Marco had done his research enough to know that all it took in the Underworld for a battle for the death was a click of the fingers and a simple disagreement. The strong survived down here and the weak had no right to complain. Hunter kicked the spear into Marco's hands before rushing forward to thrust it. Marco rolled to the side and jumped back. He ended up in the wall of Demons who pushed him back to the floor. He hit his lower face into the floor bruising his chin and cutting his lip. Blood trickled down his face as he wiped it away.

The Hunter dragged his spear on the floor causing a horrible screeching noise before swinging the spear down as if it was just a bat at Marco. He raised his in his hands to block which allowed the Hunter to push him into the darkness. The two were locked, neither able to push down and defeat the other once Marco had regained his balance. Marco felt like he was being toyed with, played like just food for a beast.

"Who are you?" Marco gritted his teeth to ask the stranger who was still hiding his face. Hunter could see his brown eyes through the skull and smiled. He drew in closer and whispered something to Marco. Marco's grip seemed to slip as Hunter threw him into the red light. Marco stood and stared into the darkness. His palms were sweaty as he tried to hold his spear as his fears were becoming realised. The Hunter was at the edge of the light, revealing his attire to Marco. He took one look at it and seemed to be trapped in his own mind, his breathing was rushed as his heart felt like it was going to burst. Hunter smirked before stepping back into the shadows. Marco was flooded with fear, anxiety and he felt his insides almost seem to freeze under the red light. Everything seemed to stop for him as he was overwhelmed by negativity but, like how night must give way to day, Marco's heart and body seemed to blaze with anger. Blind and furious rage consumed Marco.
Marco rushed into the darkness, immediately clashing weapons with the Hunter. The Demons who could see in the dark were enjoying the exchange as the two moved with precision and skill. Marco was using every technique he had at his disposal that wouldn't damage the spectators but it was like this Hunter was all too familiar with the techniques of his home. Marco used his spear to volt kick into the Hunter, forcing him into the light, dropping his own spear in the process. Hunter stood up with a grin that stretched from one ear to the next. He hadn't had this much fun in so many years. When he had killed his last target he was eager to find the next, the next thrill, the next hunt but it had been taken from him. The boy before him, a pale reminder of what once was available to him.
He looked up to see Marco's eyes reflecting the light as he walked forth. With his skull helm and the shine Marco could almost pass for a denizen of this domain. Hunter started to laugh as he raised his fists and took a stance much too similar to Marco's. He could tell it triggered the boy as he dropped his spear and took his own stance. Hunter waited for the boy to make the first move but was a little surprised when he didn't, even with blinding rage Marco wouldn't make a mistake that would ruin his sport. Hunter moved forward but let Marco strike first. His fists were sharp, aimed at his neck and eyes. Vital areas for sure but in a flurry just as fast Hunter deflected and dodged all of his strikes. Marco moved, kicking Hunter in the abdomen but Hunter just used the force to roll back, returning a kick to Marco's side at the same time. Both stood up again and regained their stance. To the demon's the fight was like a dance, they were entranced by it, absorbed into it as the two swiftly moved. This time they were taking it more seriously, each landing blows but still using their skill to take the blow in a way that wouldn't hinder them. It seemed almost as if the fight was equal when Hunter dropped low and used his leg to flip Marco. He tried to regain his footing but Hunter kicked him across the floor. Winded Marco took a moment to stand as he turned to see both Hunter and the spear missing.

"WHO ARE YOU!?" Marco yelled out in rage as he stood up, scanning for his opponent.

"Your end." Came from the darkness as the Hunter threw his spear at Marco with all the force his muscular body could manage. Marco couldn't see it coming as it flew from the shadows. It's poisonous tip seemed to glimmer as Marco's world seemed to slow down. He looked beyond the spear, obsessed not with the death that was looming but the man who had thrown it. He hadn't managed to get a good look at his face. He had been too distracted by his words, his speed and clothes, the Hunter remained somewhat a faceless beast. A beast that was about to end his life.

Marco seemed to accept his end, he felt the world begin to speed up again as a flash of flaming white appeared in front of him, caressing his face with dry and hot air, he felt his whole mouth go dry as he saw the person who now stood before him..

Tom held his hand up and the heat from his powers eradicated the spear in less than a second, never even allowing it to make contact. The spear was turned to ash which flew into their eyes blinding them both for just a fraction of a second. His flames burst around the room engulfing it in light. In the place of the shadows remained nothing. The Hunter had disappeared while they had been blinded by the ash.

Tom stood, flames ablaze looking for where the assailant could have disappeared to, he turned to face a crushed Marco when a flash of light blue froze him in a giant cube of ice.

"Let me guess. He said something about the dance being for him. I shouldn't have expected anything else. Let's just go Marco." Star walked from behind the Demons. She had a cut on her face but other than that looked unharmed. She turned to Marco who was on his knees, cold sweats pouring from within. He looked at her and then back at Tom before clarifying the situation.

"Star… Tom didn't attack me. Tom saved me." Star's face turned pale white as she rushed to undo her magic. She flicked her wand as a swarm of red hot butterflies burst forth and seemed to engulf the Prince.

Tom dropped to the floor struggling to breath. He felt the chill still spreading in his body.

Tom whispered to himself as Marco rushed to pull him up.

"I'm so sorry Tom." Marco began to apologise as Tom held up his hands. He turned to address the room.

"I want to thank Princess Star and Sir Marco for helping me with the entertainment this evening. We thought it would spice up the evening if we put on a little performance. Please help yourself to the most disgusting of beverages and enjoy the rest of your evening." All the demons roared and clapped in glee before rushing to the plates of food that Tom's servants began to bring in. He signalled for the two to follow him out of the room and in silence they did.

"Tom.. I'm so-" Tom interrupted Star this time. He sat down and ran his hands through his hair. He loosened his necktie and looked up at her.

"It's not your fault Star. If I had never acted like I did in the past I wouldn't be suspected of the worst. I made mistakes, big ones, ones that I can't even explain how much I regret but I am trying to change." Tom admitted as he looked up at the spiked rocks that littered the sky in the Underworld.

"Thank you." The pair looked up to see Marco staring off the bridge into the streams of molten lava below.

"You're welcome but from what I saw you shouldn't have needed my help."

"Guess I got distracted." Marco glanced at Tom who seemed to see past his excuse.

"Whatever the reason I don't think it's best you stay in the Underworld. Star, could you go and call the carriage?" Star looked like she wanted to refuse after not even being given the chance to explain herself or apologise but instead walked away crestfallen.

"Why did you help us?" Marco broke the silence left by her absence.

"Like you said, Can't have the future King's and Queen's at war over a simple mistake."

"Just that?"

"No, not just that. I will protect her, just as you do but the threats she faces from me are much less dangerous it seems than the ones she faces from you." Marco froze. Tom's words seemed to pierce his heart like a thin sliver of ice tearing through his chest.

"What's Echo Creek? I was close enough to hear him whisper it earlier. You seemed to lose your mind when you saw his weird symbol but lose your composure when he said that name. You gave into rage and went for the kill." Tom asked as plainly as he could, not allowing Marco to respond to his previous comment. He watched as Marco's head seemed to spin unnaturally and face him. His cold sweats returned as he felt his breathing tighten. Tom immediately stood up to support him as Marco's feet gave way. Marco felt like his lungs were burning as his world seemed to spin around him.

"Marco.. what do those words mean that they could turn someone as strong as you to this.. what exactly is Echo Creek?" Marco was struggling to breath and seemed to be shaking more and more uncontrollably. Tom held his hand to Marco's heart and felt the fear and coldness spread around his body, it was like nothing he had ever felt before.

"Marco. What is it?"

"Home." Marco wheezed as he felt darkness consume his vision and the world fade to black.

In the ruins of a much older building a short while away Hunter found himself being held in the air by a scaly tale of the well dressed lizard. The creature threw him through the decaying brickwork before sitting down at a table it had prepared, waiting for him to get back up.

"I hadn't expected to be pulled from the flames by a complete stranger." Hunter coughed as the dust settled. He knew if the creature had wanted to hurt him it would have.

"Oh.. my apologies, my name is Toffee and I feel we have much to talk about." It's mouth grew wide revealing it's sharp, razor like teeth.

"Toffee? Not the most intimidating name I've ever heard of but I will thank you for the assistance. Hunter. Names Hunter." He pulled out the other chair and sat down, brushing off some debris from his jacket. Toffee's eyes fixated on the emblem that decorated his upper arms. Alongside some strips that used to indicate rank was the symbol of a rising phoenix, breaking forth from a shell of green and blue. The flames seemed to shimmer in the blood moon, almost making them feel alive.

"Interesting attire. What does the symbol represent for it to inspire such anger in the young hero of Mewni?" Hunter saw his deranged eyes look at the symbol in a euphoria of twisted joy. It seems that he may have found what he was looking for.

"It can mean many things, depending on whom you ask.. but that sort of intel can only be shared with those we trust."

"We?"

"Let's hear all about it, your reasons for targeting the Princess and then I'll tell you everything your little reptile body wants to hear." Toffee seemed to snarl, snapping his jaw shut and staring at the Hunter.

"Why would you think I was after the Princess?" Hunter smirked then pulled out his notepad.

"The creature known as Ludo seems to be amassing an army. One would suspect it is for the destruction of the Butterfly Kingdom but I have reason to believe possible contact with the target had changed this. In my opinion, Ludo seems to be wasting time in order to quell monster anger. Maybe an empowerment move?. Further observation will be required.

Additional Observation: Only one monster was turned away from the recruitment drive. A lone reptilian like creature. I suspect that he may have an alternative motive to defeat the Butterfly family that caused friction with the new regime. Requesting decision on whether to approach.

Headquarters response: Negative. Any creature too pitiful to join Subject:L7D0 is worthless to us" Toffee's scales seemed to shake with annoyance, he was being watched, not just watched, but ridiculed by some organisation he viewed as lesser to him.

"Let's just say we go back, way back. I have a point to prove and the Princess could help me do it." Toffee witnessed a gentle smirk mirror on Hunter's face. He released that he, himself, had started to grin again, the thought of having a competent ally seemed to warm his cold blood.

"Then I think we have a lot to discuss."

Both denizens of death continued to smile, each aware of the gift the blood moon had given them.
