Chapter 9:
The boys all began their training at Kami's lookout, with Mr. Popo's guidance. At one point, in the middle of sparring with Chiaotzu, a few days into the regime, Krillin absent-mindedly asked Kami, "Hey, how is Goku's kid?"
Kami laughed, having been able to watch Kura's training with Piccolo, "I think she's alright."
"Okay, good," Krillin stated. Chiaotzu paused in his attacks, "I bet Piccolo is a tough teacher."
"That he is," Kami muttered, walking over to the edge of his lookout. He had seen the events unfold after the last few days. Kura started to practice fighting with Piccolo right away- after beating a dinosaur and proving herself, of course. That first night, however; things didn't go so smoothly.
As the sun started to set, Piccolo suddenly stopped fighting. He stood still, But Kura didn't notice. She huffed out and took a running jump towards the green man. She wanted to land a punch so badly. All she could think about was how her dad was gone, well, how he sacrificed himself. If she thought about it too long she knew she'd start to cry. If there was any chance of feeling better, she would have to get stronger. At least, that's what Piccolo had been telling her.
She jumped at him, her fist wearily up in the air ahead of her. With ease, Piccolo grabbed her wrist, stopping her attack completely. He held her, her small body dangling in the air.
"Hey!" Kura yelled. "Let me go!" She struggled, kicking her legs.
"That's all for today!" Piccolo stated seriously, tossing her down.
"B...but I didn't hit you…"
"I know," he folded his arms and looked down at her, "That means you don't get this." Piccolo turned instantly. He held out his hand and vaporized the sliver of dinosaur meat.
"Wh-what?!" Kura gasped, "What am I gonna eat?!"
"I don't care," Piccolo shrugged his shoulders and started to cackle, "You need to get stronger quickly, so you better adapt fast or starve!"
Kura scrunched up her face. She didn't like the idea of not eating until she hit him, but she almost agreed with him that she needed to learn how to fight quickly. She saw her dad get attacked by Raditz and if more guys like that were coming… Well, what was the Earth gonna do? Would she even change anything?
"Why are you training me?" Kura asked quietly, sitting on the ground when she was thrown.
"Huh?" Piccolo was confused by that question.
"Why do I need to fight? Can't you just beat these new guys?" Kura began to feel kind of down on herself. She was a little kid, she didn't understand why Piccolo would even kidnap her to train her. What was she going to do?
"No," Piccolo admitted, looking away. "These men are stronger than that Saiyan we fought. And I needed your father's help. I could not have beat him on my own."
"Oh…"
"The Saiyans coming to this planet are going to be stronger than the last. Stronger than me." Piccolo went on, "I need to train in order to stand up to them, your father is going to train and I bet your stupid friends will wish him back to life. You can whine and cry all you want, but you are powerful like your father."
"I am?" Kura's eyes went wide.
And Piccolo rolled his, "You are half Saiyan."
Kura dropped her hands on the ground, "But I don't know what that means."
Piccolo thought about how he did not really know what Saiyans were either. He just knew that Goku's brother and apparently Goku was one too. Creatures from an alien race. And more of them were coming to Earth soon. If Goku's daughter was able to be half as strong as Goku, maybe they had a chance. At least, she would be a useful ally, if he could train her right. They had only been together for about 24 hours now, not counting the fight against Raditz, and she had pouted and cried, but there was still a glimmer of fight in her.
"I won't give up Piccolo," Kura stated, and Piccolo glanced back at her. A small child with a bushy brown tail, who watched him kill her father. Her eyebrows flared, staring at the dirt on the ground, "I'll work hard so you can get stronger."
"Hmph," folding his arms across his chest, Piccolo turned on his heels and began to walk away, "Go to sleep. Your real training starts tomorrow."
Slowly, Kura curled up in a ball on the flat terrain. It was going to be impossible to fall asleep like this, she thought. She wanted her nice bed at home. She wanted her mom and dad to kiss her goodnight and make her feel safe.
Instead, she felt that this strange green demon man who fought and also killed her father, and who stole her, left her completely alone. In reality, Piccolo only took to the air. He wasn't going to let his trainee out in the open to get attacked by wild animals or die, at least without watching to see how she'd react.
"Ugh," Kura breathed out, rolling over onto her back. She stared up at the night sky. The stars twinkling. "Aw, I've never seen this many stars before..." She said, holding a hand out. Up on the mountain, she could see the stars, but they didn't look this clear and bright. And usually, she went to bed pretty early.
Kura started to count the stars, trying to find constellations. She moved across the sky, pointing her finger.
"What is she-?" Piccolo asked, observing.
Her eyes shifted over and over, until she saw it. The moon.
"Wow!" She gasped, smiling. "It's so big!"
The moon was full, huge, and glowing. Kura couldn't help but stare.
Watching the moon, her Saiyan blood began to boil. Her arms started to shake.
Piccolo focused, looking down at her. Why did she seem to be growing?
Her arms got hairy. Eyes went red. Her body grew, increasing out in size and ripping her clothes. She was turning into a great ape.
"What the hell-?!" Piccolo shouted. He had no idea what was happening, having never seen Goku turn into an ape as a child. As Kura grew bigger and bigger into a full-sized ape monster, Piccolo became increasingly worried.
Up on the lookout at the time, as night fell, Kami just laughed. Maybe he should have gotten rid of Kura's tail like he did Goku's many years before. But oh well, he kind of liked seeing his other half deal with this situation.
In the middle of the wilderness, walking through the darkness, Chichi looked up. She could see the silhouette of an ape head on the moon. "Oh my gosh!" She shouted, "Kura?!" Chichi took off blindly running towards the moon.
Before she and Goku got married, Bulma and Krillin had mentioned that Goku used to turn into a horrific giant ape, but she didn't really believe them. Yamcha insisted he saw it and explained how Goku had destroyed the World Martial Arts Tournament building and arena during his fight with Jackie Chun. The only way he knew to transform him back was cutting off his tail, but Jackie Chun (Master Roshi) destroyed the moon.
The fact the Goku used to turn into the great ape during the full moon didn't really affect her much, since he didn't have a tail anymore. Apparently, according to Goku, Kami cut that off and restored the moon with the dragon balls. She never had to worry about him transforming, but when her child was born with a tail. Even though she didn't fully believe what Goku's friends were telling her in hushed conversations, she made sure to put Kura to bed before the full moon was out.
Chichi narrowly dodged trees and probably stubbed her toes on rocks and boulders, but she kept on going. Determination pushed her forward to get her daughter back. That great ape had to be her. There was no question.
