Daigo's feet left the ground in the last leap from it he would perform during this training.
Some dirt and pebbles from the ground jumped up along with his feet, but they hit the ground right after. Unlike that dirt and those pebble, Daigo did not hit the ground and instead climbed higher and higher into the air.
Instead of being directly in front of him, the first blade was spinning as if cutting through the air from the bottom upwards. It would not be as simple as stepping on the hilt of the blade and moving to the next one as if jumping on rocks placed in a river. This time he would have to move with more precise movements as if those moving blades were footholds within two walls.
It was possible to climb walls by jumping from one to another with a great amount of force to start the climb. Some footholds may be sent in place or pieces of the wall could be used to keep footing, but otherwise it was based on the continued movement and pushing force of the person who tried to climb the walls. The same thing would apply here in order to reach the eighth and final blade for this Hassou Tobi.
The main issue that came up was the fact that these blades were suspended in midair and were continuously rotating upwards.
There was nothing keeping those blades in place once he landed on one of them and tried to hop off of them. They would be pushed away while still rooting upwards, forcing him to move even lower towards the ground. From there he would need an even stronger push to maintain his speed, balance, and height, but that would only put even more weight on the falling blade. There was no proper way to land on top of those hilts without them falling to the round and dragging him along with them.
"In that case... Let us do this in an importer way."
Once he got to the maximum height he could reach with his leap from the ground, Daigo saw how the blades were positioned and which directions they were all going.
The first blade could be seen moving to the right with the hilt going towards the ground and the blade moving upwards to face the sky. It was still in the beginning stages of the spin, so it was the best one for him to land on, but also the one most likely to increase the speed of his fall.
Disregarding the possibility of falling faster, he placed some weight with his downward moving body while trying to keep himself upright. His foot touched the rotating blade and he felt just how it could mess him up if he was not careful. The way it had been moving moved together with his body, so he used enough force to jump back up by leaping from the blade.
The blade made a quick spin before stabbing into the ground in a slanted position.
Next came the second blade which had the hilt closer to the ground than the first one.
Instead of placing his foot on the top of the hilt or the closest part of it, he extended his foot a bit more so that it would land on the other side of it. From this angle it would be impossible to turn around and jump to the next one without messing up or falling to the ground. So instead he did something else.
"Hisato. How far back do I need to go?"
"It's 2 meters behind and to your right! Going in the same direction as the first one!"
He was glad that Hisato understood what he had been asking and that his response was immediate.
Leaning forward as if taking a step had forced the blade to begin rotating in the opposite direction. Daigo used this to his advantage by leaping backwards while pushing the blade towards the ground.
The blade made no spin as it was forcibly stabbed into the ground with a solid sound.
Like Hisato had said, the new blade had been 2 meters behind him and to his right. It was difficult to gain his balance due to the awkward position of having to jump backwards.
Unlike the first blade, he could not make a quick leap to escape. Unlike the second blade, he could not force it to turn in the opposite direction. This left him to simply fall backwards along with the blade as it rotated.
"I suppose that is it for me. I should just give up."
The sound of something hitting rang out in the area as the blade he was standing on jumped up.
"Thank you very much, Hanzaki-san."
The hilt of the blade had been shot and the shot had almost reached his foot. Because of the shot the hilt and been pushed in the opposite direction of how it had been originally rotating.
The push from the hilt that sent the blade into an opposing rotation had also sent Daigo moving forward instead of backwards, giving him the momentum needed for the next leap.
The fourth blade had proven that he could go further than before. Three blades had been the limit for him when they had first started, but now he was reaching the fourth.
I require the help of others, but that is fine since these blades are not organized like the last times.
Both sides had something going for them so that the other side could not accomplish what it wanted. Daigo's side consisted of Hisato nearby to help and Hanzaki ready to fire at him should he make a mistake. The other side had Sekai and Yuki moving the blades in a way to keep him from reaching the eighth blade to finish this training.
The fourth blade was the halfway point.
And yet Daigo found it rather easy to reach.
The blade had moved enough that it was horizontal in the air instead of vertical or slanted like the other three before it. This gave him the surface he needed to land on it and gain his balance to turn around. The moment his left foot touched the flattened edge of the blade, his right foot moved to touch the flattened hilt of it. He shifted his weight from there and turned his body while making another leap.
The fourth blade and halfway point had been passed without any help from Hisato or Hanzaki.
The fifth blade was not as easy once he saw that it was similar to the third blade in that it was slanted and already turning in the same direction as he was coming.
"Should this be where you give up?"
"Damn these idiots for using me like this."
Hanzaki groaned as he lined up his shot. A shot that should have been meant for Hisato, but he knew exactly why his friend had said those words.
It was not a way for him to get shot or for the area near him to get shot. It had been a way to force him to fire a shot at the blade that was orating in the same direction that Daigo was moving in. Hisato had wanted him to fix that blade before Daigo could even reach it.
For the third blade he had to be careful with his shot so that he did not hit Daigo in the foot, but this time he did not need to be so careful since the other boy had yet to reach the blade at all. Even so, that did not help how he felt about the situation.
"Using my words against me like this... I would think only Girikage would do that. Hisato following him in that just drains me too much to deal with either one of them."
"And yet you still fire for them."
Hokari's words from behind were ignored in favor of firing the shot.
The shot fired moved through the air before colliding with the sixth blade. From his scope he could see Daigo land messily on the blade before taking his leap to the seventh blade. There were only two more and then the training would be done.
Watching both Daigo and Hisato do this training had put a sort of pressure on him once he saw just how they were going about doing it. Both of them had been messing up in obvious ways that had seemed to have gotten the ire of Sekai.
Hanzaki never liked the man, but even he could tell that these mess ups were not something to really take lightly. Even so, Sekai seemed to be the only one of the two supervisors to think this way.
"Hey, do you know why Yuki-san is being so casual here?"
"It's probably because he has no real reason to be serious here. This is something that was meant for Hikigane Squad and Hisato, he was just dragged along into this. Probably by Kirikari."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because he would get serious if it really mattered."
Hokari sounded confident in his answer, but Hanzaki felt that there was much more to it than just some confidence in his words. It was something that he, and likely Arafune, knew, but not something Hanzaki himself knew.
Thinking about it too much would mess with his firing, so he chose to turn his attention back to the two who were trying to pass this training session. What he saw from that distance though was not what he had expected in the slightest.
Can I make it!?
Hisato's thoughts continued to go through his mind quickly as his legs pounded against the road as hard as they could. He was sure his blood would be pumping and his heart would be racing if he was in his flesh and blood body instead of this trion-made one. That was just how much excitement he felt as he ran along the road in order to keep up with the two moving bodies ahead as well as the spinning blades.
He was grateful for Hanzaki fixing the sixth blade with his shot. He felt bad for using his friend like that, but it seemed worth it when he was helping out another friend. It seemed like a fair tradeoff.
But now what could he do?
Hanzaki had fired a shot and did not seem like he would fire another one for the seventh blade. Even if he could, is there even a chance he could fire it in time without getting in Daigo's way, he wondered.
Daigo was already airborne as the sixth blade stabbed into the ground with a solid sound. The seventh blade was as far away as the other blades had been from each other, so it was easy to guess the amount of time it would take to reach it.
Since Hisato was running along a straight path, with Yuki in front of him, he could see things from a different angle. It also meant he could reach the seventh and eighth blade before Daigo, who had to take his leaps and move in a slanted way instead of in a straight path. The time difference between them both reaching the blade was minor, but Hisato was certain he could reach it before Daigo could.
The issue came in that he would not know what to do after reaching that seventh blade.
The blades that hung in the air for a moment were still relatively high, so he could not just reach them unless he also took a leap. Unlike Daigo, his leaps were not that great and could not reach the tops of those blades without already having some height.
So what can I do to help here? Think, think, think, Hisato!
If Daigo could easily make that sixth leap to the seventh blade then there would be no reason for him to even try to help. It would work out just fine and he could watch Daigo move to the eight blade and go from there. But that was not the case.
Even with Hanzaki's help, he still only barely made it on time to make that leap. It didn't look balanced at all when he jumped and it doesn't look like he'll make it out some help here!
There had been a reason for him to help here. He could see how the leap would go from a different angle and could tell that Daigo may be able to make it to the seventh blade, but he would not be able to jump from there to the eight blade. It would put him in the worst position he could be in before finishing the training.
What could he do though? That thought ran through his head as his feet ran along the road. The thought that had followed was where he found his answer.
Can I make it?
Directly ahead of him was Yuki. Yuki had not gotten in the way of the shots or stopped Hisato from moving forward to help. It was because he had said that he would not directly interact with either one of them from the start and would only be focusing on the blades so that they would be ready for use when they made their leaps. Since this was the last chance, he did not even try to get the blades that had been stabbed into the ground and instead focused his attention on moving forward. He was likely just watching at this point.
The points they had received at the start of the training came back to mind as he looked to the moving back of his upperclassman. Hisato had not done anything to lose any points after having failed his attempt at the leaps. That meant his twenty points were still there and not being moved at all. Those points would be deducted if they missed one of the leaps or attacked Sekai or Yuki, so they had not thought of doing anything like that.
But what if he was no longer trying to make those jumps?
If Hisato was no longer trying to make these leaps and was leaving it up to Daigo instead, what use were those points? There would be no reason to think about them if he could not even reach the same heights as his friend. So if they were useless to him now, they could be useful in a different way. The problem that came with that was how to go about this unthought of plan.
Even if I get to him, what can I do exactly? He isn't doing anything to stop us from helping Daigo, so there's no reason to stop him from moving. Trying to throw him into the blades would also be a terrible idea for a lot of reasons. So what am I... Wait. Throw into the blades.
"If I can't do that to him... Can I do it to myself?"
If this had been a real fight then that simple idea would mean an immediate loss for him, but this was no fight. It was a training session in simply jumping. The differences in the two circumstances may have been a reach, but thinking about the circumstances also meant he could use those differences here.
So he used them like how he wanted.
"I'll make it!"
Daigo watched with a bit of interest as Yuki slowed down from under him. The height difference made it hard to tell what was going on, but he could see Yuki slow down a moment and Hisato moved a bit faster than before.
It was a bit curious, but that was not what he was supposed to be focusing on at the moment. Currently, he was getting closer and closer to the seventh blade because of the help provided by Hanzaki and the shot he had fired on the sixth blade. The blade had jumped up for a moment and, instead of being surprised, he took that chance to use the sixth blade as a foothold so that he could make it to the seventh blade.
The leap itself had been messy, sending him slightly to the side instead of the direct path to the seventh blade. He could still reach that seventh blade, but there would be nothing he could do after that. It made too much of an awkward spot to use as a foothold for him.
This was where he would have ended up failing. He had resolved himself to getting through this training and had even gotten some help from Hisato and Hanzaki, but even that had not been enough. From here on he would be removed from Hikigane Squad and never know what the full extent of his usefulness was. It was a saddening to know that all this effort had been wasted on him and he could not even see it through to the end.
He could always join another squad, but it was highly likely that they would not be as good of a fit for him as Hikigane Squad was. They were a bunch of oddities that worked well with each other and could play off of each other, no matter what was happening. He had been the new member, yet both the captain and vice-captain had been able to work around him during training sessions while their Operator easily understood how to work with the information on him and from him. It really was sad that he would have to leave them.
At least that should have been the case once he noticed his failed attempt at this training. This training that Yuki called Hassou Tobi - the eight leaps. Instead, something else came to him that filled up his body instead of defeat.
The fact I am still trying to make this leap... I want to ask Hisato right now, but he seems busy. Actually, speaking of him…
Hisato was not giving up from what he could see. When it came to speed, Yuki was clearly faster than either one of them, yet Hisato had quickly caught up to him after that moment of Yuki slowing down. He was still unsure why the All-Round did so, but it had happened and Hisato had taken advantage of that.
Unlike what he thought he would do, Hisato's next action was something that Daigo was sure that he would never have thought of doing. It seemed to be disrespectful to Yuki, but the words from before came to his mind. Both Sekai and Yuki were to be viewed as "objects" during this training session and not people moving around the area. That had likely been what led Hisato to do what he did.
From the looks of it Hisato seemed to be trying to pass by Yuki, but that had not been the case. He made no move to move to the left or the right and instead continued to move forward - to where Yuki ran. To where the "object known as Yuki" was moving.
As Daigo reached the seventh blade, he tried to steady himself for the brief instance he had on it. The blade was still turning, so he tried to put some pressure on the opposite direction to create some sort of stable footing before he had the chance to leap once more.
He found that taking that leap was possible, but making it to the eighth blade was where it was impossible.
What should I do here?
"Jump, Daigo! Leave it to me and just jump!"
His question was answered by the yell from the boy who sounded a bit closer than he had before.
Daigo did not question the command and instead focused on making the seventh leap. The target was the eighth blade and the goal was just beyond that, a simple eighth leap away as a matter of fact. Even if he could not make it to the eighth blade, he would at least take that seventh leap and trust in his friend here.
That was when he saw exactly what that friend had in mind when he yelled for him to take a leap.
Hisato certainly is getting out of a comfort zone here, isn't he?
Hisato moved forward at the same time Daigo jumped from the seventh blade. He had no way of reaching that eighth blade's height with support and had no clue what to do once he had reached the blade that lost and finished it's entire rotation while getting closer to the ground. Suwa Squad had never done anything like this and he had never fought in a situation that seemed this strange, but that was not enough to stop him. A feeling of determination had appeared in his body the moment Daigo had gotten him to help and that feeling would not relent until he had tried everything possible to help as he had been asked.
That was exactly the reason as to why he made a quick leap from the ground without much in the way of balance. Instead of trying to maintain the same balance that Daigo was showing, he made a quick leap in the heat of the moment in order to reach a certain place. The place was not the blade, the boy going to the blade, or even the sky itself. The place he had been trying to reach was the shoulder of the person running in front of him.
Daigo's moving shadow could be seen on the ground, but that did not distract him from going to where he wanted. Both of them were moving toward the eighth blade that had almost finished its rotation - one was coming from above while the other was reaching the place below it.
With a bit of a lead on Daigo, Hisato had reached his place first. His foot managed to catch Yuki's shoulder with the base of his foot landing unevenly on the upperclassman's shoulder. He was still unbalanced as he landed with one foot, but the reasoning behind his quick leap showed itself in the form of a moving body.
When someone skilled in combat found themselves uneven and unbalanced for any reason they would tend to try and fix that by finding a new balance to even themselves out. It was even more evident for the ones who used speed and quick movements since they had to always have their balance in case something unexpected appeared before them.
In this case, the thing that had appeared was from above and landed right on top of Yuki.
Yuki was the perfect example of a person who focused on speed and quick movements. He had a top tier combatant that Hisato was sure would immediately regain his balance after having something like a foot step on top of his shoulder. True to his thoughts, Yuki shifted his body in a way that would offset the weight that Hisato was now putting on him and fixed his posture. Due to this action, Hisato's own balance had been reset and he could correct his own stance.
It was not complete balance since he was not used to doing this like this, but it was enough for him to lower his body at the same time and prepare for another leap. The difference in experience showed with the way Yuki had been able to pull that off under these circumstances while Hisato was still having trouble trying not to fall off the shoulder.
The moment he had regained enough of his balance, he made another quick leap from the shoulder. This did not appear to be against any of the rules since the amount of points he had did not fall. It was likely that his action was viewed as "using an object as a step" rather than "stepping on and attacking the object". For that, he was relieved, but that relief and the thoughts of apologizing to Yuki properly were pushed aside so that he could focus on his task.
Now that he had gotten the help he needed, he was able to reach the eighth blade and appear right under it.
Above the eighth blade, Daigo came down with his body in a specific posture that was meant for landing before making a quick leap. He was a bit off from what Hisato could see, but that was exactly why he was there.
How much faith does he have in me here!? he wondered.
There was a high chance that he would mess up or that he could not make it, yet Daigo did not hesitate to jump or try to accomplish this himself. Instead he had taken a posture that showed he was ready to land for the one moment before taking the final leap he needed to finish this training session. It was an absolute leap of faith that put pressure on Hisato to accomplish his side of it. That was not enough to stop him from moving though.
Hisato started to bring up the leg that he had been left behind from his leap off of Yuki's shoulder. He had made the first quick jump with his right foot and landed with his right foot. From there he took the second leap with his right foot, leaving his left foot to move in any way he wanted. Now here it was, moving up towards the eighth blade while Daigo's own right foot was coming down from above the eighth blade.
That was it. The connecting point the two of them needed to end this training session was right there. And it connected perfectly.
Hisato's left leg hit the flat of the blade as it began its second rotation in the air, putting pressure from below to push upwards on the blade.
Daigo's right leg landed on the flat of the blade as it began its second rotation in the air, putting pressure from above to push downwards on the blade.
The two pressure pushed against each other for a single moment before gravity started to bring Hisato back down. His body fell and his leg was no longer applying the upwards pressure from before, making the downwards pressure take over and start to push the blade to the ground.
But it had been enough.
Daigo had made the final leap from the eighth blade and created the pressure that forced Hisato and the blade down. He was now airborne again, but this time he had no real target for his landing and instead looked around the air. The end of the road was in sight and he could hear the sound of the blade hitting the ground and a pair of feet landing right next to it.
After a few seconds of being in the air, he fixed his position and lifted his feet up while his body fell to the ground in an arc. The ground was getting closer and he had made all those leaps. All that was left to do was land. That was exactly what he did.
Daigo applied pressure to his arced fall and moved forward. The moment his feet touched the ground, he spread them out while the forward momentum pushed him past where he had originally landed.
After a few seconds of his landing slide, he came to a complete stop. From behind, he could hear only one thing.
"That will conclude Border's testing of two of its agents! Thank you Girikage Daigo and Sasamori Hisato for doing this test! And thank you, citizens of Mikado City, for cooperating with us!"
The end of the training session.
