Sofia practically leapt out of the front door when her and Jyn left the house that afternoon. She had never seen the city of London properly before, so she was more than excited to see some sights. Han was fine with staying at the house with Chewie, so it meant that Sofia and Jyn were free to do what they wanted.
As they started walking down the street, Sofia linked arms with her mom and Jyn placed her hand on Sofia's, so they were practically huddled together; it made Sofia feel all cosy inside, like she had been reunited with a part of her that had been missing for so long. Being with her mom just made her feel calm.
"How about we head further into Central?" Jyn spoke up as they turned the corner of the street, passing more houses that looked similar to Jyn's, "I hear there's an interesting exhibition on at the Tate Modern."
Sofia smiled wildly. "That sounds great." She replied and squeezed the sleeve of Jyn's jacket in happiness. Sofia couldn't recall if she had ever heard of the Tate Modern before, but she assumed it was some sort of art gallery and looked forward to it, nonetheless.
As they walked out onto a main road, Jyn led the two of them to a very crowded bus stop. Sofia held onto her mother, almost afraid that she would get lost if she let go of Jyn's arm.
The few times Sofia ventured into L.A., usually with her dad, it was busy, but everything felt more spaced out and big. In London, things seemed a little bit smaller and closer together, with people speeding in all directions, left, right and centre. Though the atmosphere felt rushed, there was an excitable buzz in the air and Sofia suddenly felt the electricity of city; no wonder London was known for its fast-paced lifestyle.
After about 3 minutes of standing at the bus stop, a red double-decker bus approached the stop. Sofia followed Jyn's lead and got on after her, placing a blue card on a reader, just like her mom did (what was the card called again? An Oyster Card?)
The card made the reader beep and the bus driver gave her a nod that signalled she was okay to get on. Sofia moved through the bus, hoping to get a seat on the top floor. There was another set of doors in the middle of the bus and at the back and Jyn walked over to them, Sofia following suit. They climbed up the stairs, which proved to be a little bit difficult because the bus had already started moving; Sofia very nearly fell backwards, but she safely made it to the top and luckily there were two empty seats. Of course, Jyn let Sofia have the window seat and they both sat down as the streets of London moved passed them.
It might've sounded silly, but Sofia couldn't quite contain her excitement that she was actually sitting on a red double-decker bus. To everyone else on the bus, it wasn't a novelty at this point, but in the US these types of buses were uncommon, so Sofia found it very thrilling. She was in one of the most famous cities in the world, sitting on a famous red double-decker bus (which were iconic to the city of London) and she was with her mom. What more could she want at this very moment in time?
Sofia's face was glued to the window, staring out of it onto the streets with wide eyes which made Jyn chuckle.
"You'd think you've never seen London before with that look on your face." She laughed.
Sofia looked at her mom. "It just never gets old." She said with a slight smile, acting as if she were Emma.
Jyn nodded in agreement. "I know what you mean. I could never be away from it for too long. It always made me feel antsy."
Sofia turned back to the window. Actually seeing London in person was far more exciting than seeing it in movies and on TV. Of course, there was more to London than the city centre, Emma had told her that. But to Sofia it was all new, so she didn't mind acting like a tourist for a day.
Eventually, the bus made its way onto a bridge and suddenly the buildings disappeared, revealing the River Thames. Sofia jumped slightly in her seat at the sight. She marvelled as her eyes moved across the skyline: a body of water that seemed to go on for miles in both directions, tall buildings and in the distance, the London Eye. She could even see a small glimpse of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Maybe after the gallery, they could go see it all up close?
Then, a voice sounded on the bus as it pulled into a stop: "Waterloo Bridge, South Bank." And Jyn gestured to Sofia that it was time for them to get off.
They stepped off the back of the bus and once again linked arms, Sofia letting Jyn lead the way. They walked down some steps and started walking along the embankment.
"I know the Tate is a little bit further up, but I figured you wouldn't mind the extra walking." Jyn said and Sofia nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, it's really nice to finally be out of the house." Sofia replied, and Jyn squeezed Sofia's hand with her own.
The two of them walked along Southbank just taking in the view of the city. They passed some more buildings, weaving in and out of people walking in the opposite direction and then finally got to the Tate Modern. The building wasn't what Sofia expected; it was a big, brown brick building that was long widthways with a huge tower in the middle. Even if Sofia was expecting an old, Victorian style art gallery, this was still super interesting. They didn't have architecture like this in L.A., so she was having fun seeing how things looked different here.
The next hour or so, Sofia and Jyn wandered through this massive art gallery, arms linked together the whole time. Mostly they were silent as they observed the art that was on display but sometimes Jyn would speak, dishing out facts about certain pieces and their artist.
Emma hadn't told her this, but their mother seemed to have a special interest in art. Sofia thought that the way Jyn looked at the pieces was so mesmerising it was sort of beautiful to watch her get lost in it all. Even if they didn't exchange much conversation whilst they were walking around, Sofia didn't care. This was the most time she had spent with her mom so far and she just wanted to enjoy every minute of it.
There was one funny moment where the two of them had to stifle in their laughter, so it didn't echo around the mostly quiet room they were in. They had come across this wall that had a large, white semi-circle slightly raised off it and Sofia had been staring at it confused for a while before finally asking her mom what it was supposed to be.
"It's modern art, darling." Jyn answered, leaning down to Sofia a little.
Sofia paused for a second and then, uncontrollably said, "It's a bit shit isn't it?"
She suddenly smacked her free hand over her mouth, as Jyn's head snapped quickly in her direction, looking at her with an exaggerated look of shock on her face and raised eyebrows.
"Emma Erso! Who raised you to speak like that?" She jokingly said, before a few laughs sputtered out of her mouth.
This image of her mom trying to contain a fit of giggles made Sofia nearly laugh out loud too, "I- I didn't mean- It was an accident. But I just don't see the point in that at all." She said through little laughs herself, gesturing to the semi-circle on the wall.
Jyn put her hands on both of Sofia's shoulders and steered her away from the art, whilst pretending to ignore the stern look from the security guard who had clearly overheard Sofia's "observations".
"It's fine, I'm only kidding," Jyn laughed. "Besides, the amount of times me and Han let slip words we shouldn't have around you, I'm surprised your first words weren't swear words."
Sofia laughed. Her mother had such a fun personality! How on earth had she gone this long without knowing her?
If she was being completely honest, Sofia couldn't remember the exact exhibition they had gone to see, mostly because was too busy paying attention to her mother, but as they left the Tate Modern, she still felt like she had enjoyed seeing it.
Sometime later, the two of them found themselves back on the other side of the river and in Hyde Park.
After they left the gallery, Sofia and Jyn walked along Southbank so that Sofia could see the London Eye and Big Ben (she thought they were amazing!) And then after that, they caught a bus back towards home so that they could walk through Hyde Park, as Jyn had suggested they do earlier that morning. They weren't too far from the house and Sofia actually knew how to get back there from the park – she had looked up how quickly it took on Google Maps when they were on the bus.
Once again, Sofia and Jyn walked arm in arm through the verdant green of Hyde Park. Sofia didn't realise how huge the place really was; it felt like they could walk for hours and still be in there. Funnily enough, it was also quite a peaceful place considering it was in the middle of Central London; it was nice.
As the two walked, Sofia glanced around at the people they passed. There were so many different types of people she saw: an old, well-to-do looking couple walking with their little white dog, a mother pushing along a babies' stroller, a couple sitting on a bench drinking coffee and a group of young people who looked a few years older than Sofia, lying on the grass and staring intently at some flowers nearby. She could spot their pupils from a mile away and Sofia just giggled quietly to herself at their childlike amazement that nature did in fact exist.
Jyn seemed to notice this group too and also laughed, "It takes all sorts, eh?" She said to Sofia and Sofia nodded in amused agreement.
Sofia and Jyn walked and talked for a while until they both agreed they needed a break and found a café where they bought some food, sitting on a bench nearby to eat and sit; Sofia's feet hurt slightly from all the walking so she was thankful to finally sit down.
As Jyn sipped on the coffee she bought and Sofia finished up her sandwich, Sofia got lost in her own thoughts. She had an amazing day with her mom, and she felt like she was glowing with joy. Even though her time in London had got off to a rocky start thanks to the sudden introduction of Scott, it felt good to forget about all of that for a few hours and hang out with Jyn. She most definitely didn't want to forget this day.
Sofia discreetly glanced at Jyn as she looked out at the park. That's when she suddenly remembered her part of the plan; she was supposed to be finding out why her parents split up.
She realised now in that trying to extract this bit of information might be harder than she thought. It's not exactly like Jyn was rushing to revisit the memories of her divorcing Cassian, who would want to do that? In that moment Sofia felt like she had drawn the short straw and she almost didn't want to say anything at all for fear of ruining the lovely day she'd had with her mom.
But it was something she had promised her sister to do and knowing how her parents split up might provide Sofia and Emma with information on how they could get them back together.
Ugh! Scott!
Sofia internally rolled her eyes and sighed in annoyance. How could she forget that Scott was with her mom? That was another thing added on top of her pre-existing plans, she had to come up with a way to get rid of him. Sofia had no idea how she would do this on her own, but she decided to tackle one thing at a time so first she would ask about her dad and then think of a way to eject Scott from the picture. And who knows? Maybe finding out about how her parents split up might give Sofia something that she could use against him.
Sofia rubbed the remaining sandwich crumbs off her hands, and she turned more inward on the bench, so she called talk to Jyn. She was about to start speaking when Jyn turned and looked her, talking before Sofia could say a word.
"Em, I'm really glad we're able to spend some time together," She smiled contentedly. "Because there's something really important I want to talk to you about.
Sofia let a small laugh. "Funny you should say that, mom. There's actually something important that I want to talk to you about, too."
Jyn's eyebrows raised slightly, "Oh really? Okay then, you go first." She said.
And Sofia braced herself, letting out a deep breath. "Okay, um, I want to talk to you about my father."
Jyn's face changed so suddenly, her eyebrows very nearly reaching her hairline in shock. She had been taking a sip of her drink at that moment and choked on it slightly.
"Your father?" She stifled. "Why would you want to talk about him?" Jyn asked incredulously.
A determined look developed on Sofia's face. "Because. Mom, I'm nearly 16 and I know practically nothing about real dad."
Jyn shook her head. "Oh, c'mon Em, that's not true."
"Yes, it is!" Sofia replied "We never talk about him, not ever. Mom I've gone 15 years without knowing anything about my dad, do you really expect me to go another 15 years?" Sofia looked at her mom expectantly, waiting for an answer.
Jyn intentionally directed her gaze to the floor. "This isn't really a good time or place to talk about this kind of thing." She said in a quieter tone of voice.
Sofia got the sense that this was starting to get more difficult for her mom. A part of her said she should drop it but the other half, the bigger half, told her to carry on persisting until she got an answer.
"When is there ever a good time to talk about this kind of thing?" She questioned.
There was a pause.
"Emma, you know there's a reason why I don't talk about your father." Jyn said, in a slightly warning tone.
Sofia found herself raising her voice slightly at this, "No, I don't know what that reason is." She lightly snapped back. And then, more quietly, "Mom, please. Please just tell me something. I'm desperate."
Which was absolutely the truth. She was desperate. She needed to something on her parents that she could use and so far, she had come up with nothing. Heck, she didn't have the time to ask because Scott kept bloody interrupting everything!
Jyn stared back at Sofia, clearly regretting her decision to let her daughter speak first. How did she get in this position? The last thing she wanted to talk about was- was- that. She didn't think she'd ever have to talk about him ever again. And yet here her daughter was, asking away like there was no tomorrow. Jyn didn't understand why this topic of conversation made her feel upset like this but she tried not to raise her voice at Emma because that wouldn't be fair. She knew that Emma wouldn't drop it though, so she thought that she may as well get it over and done with so she wouldn't have to think about it again.
"Fine," Jyn said sharply. "I'll tell you something." And Sofia suddenly started paying very close attention to her mother as she began to speak: "We were young. And stupid. And we argued. All. The. Time."
Sofia's shoulders sagged a little bit as Jyn continued, "There was no amicable split and if I'm being honest with you, the way things ended were messy. It was just- really difficult and tiring for the both of us." Jyn finished with a slight hint of sadness in her voice.
Now Sofia almost felt bad for ever mentioning it. Her mom's mood seemed to have changed almost instantly.
"Oh…" Sofia's eyes trailed off, looking at the ground.
There was a slight silence and Jyn got the sense that she had upset her daughter. She let out a sigh.
"Darling, look, I don't mean to upset you. But this is why I've never said anything about it, "She said in a calmer tone, reaching her hand out and placing it on Sofia's. "The reason why I never went into any details with you when you were growing up is because whatever story you came up with in your head about why me and your dad weren't together anymore, I knew that that would be less upsetting for you than the reality."
Sofia looked up at Jyn as she gave her a sympathetic look.
"Real life isn't so easy, and the truth is, is that me and your father we just- we just fell out of love." Jyn finished with difficulty.
Sofia could tell talking about this hurt her mom, of course it would. Why would she expect it not to? By the sounds of things, it was a painful memory to dig up, but she didn't expect the story of her parent's divorce to be that brutal.
But she figured that that was the reality for most divorces. They were messy, and a winning party almost never came out on top. There were just mutual losers.
Sofia continued to look at Jyn, whose eyes had glanced down into her own lap. It was as if Sofia could see the cogs turning in her mom's head and she could tell she was thinking about the story she had just parted with. Maybe the reason why telling the story of how she split up from Cassian hurt her so much was because it still felt fresh? Sure, this had happened over 10 years ago but by the way Jyn reacted, it seems like she never properly dealt with the situation emotionally. Maybe, clouded by her anger over the break-up, she just pushed down any real feelings. And maybe, just maybe, Jyn still had some sort of feelings for Cassian…
It was a long shot, Sofia knew that, but if she played her cards right, she could turn this conversation around.
After a few moments passed where no one said anything, Sofia piped up.
"But it's been 15 years," She said, re-capturing Jyn's attention. "You're older, you're more mature now. Maybe if you were given a second chance, it might different?" Sofia said, hoping that this would get her to think about Cassian again.
Jyn's face softened up at these words in a way that made Sofia hopeful. Jyn looked at Sofia as a smile formed on her face and it was as if the joy came back to her in an instant.
"You know, I'm really glad you said that Em, because, there's something that I've been meaning to tell you. It's about Scott."
Sofia's facial expression switched suddenly from hopeful to very confused. This was not the direction of conversation she wanted to be going in…
"Scott?" Sofia asked, pondering how on earth they went from talking about her dad to Scott. "What about him?" She said cautiously.
Jyn seemed to grip Sofia's hands tighter than before and this sent alarm bells ringing in her head as she tried to mask her mass confusion.
Jyn started speaking. "Look, all this stuff about not having a dad, it's not fair on you. And you're right, I don't want you to go another 15 years without a father in your life."
The world slowed down almost instantly as Sofia watched Jyn's mouth form the dreaded sentence. In that moment, she stopped moving and she held her breath as her mom carried on talking even though Sofia really, really, wanted her to stop.
"Which is why, Scott and I-"
Oh no.
"Are engag-"
OH! NO!
In that very instant, Sofia ripped her hand out of her mother's grasp and suddenly leapt up off the bench, making Jyn nearly jump out her own skin in shock.
Sofia looked wildly at her mom with wide eyes and basically shouted in her face: "RACE YOU BACK TO THE HOUSE, MOM!"
And with that, Sofia sprinted off down the path through Hyde Park in the direction she knew that would lead her to the house, leaving Jyn behind completely bewildered.
"Wha-?! Em!" Jyn shouted after her daughter. "EMMA!"
But Sofia just kept on sprinting down the pathway, ignoring Jyn's calls.
Sofia ran. She ran as fast she could from the park all the way back to the house.
As she ran, she could feel tears in her eyes and her heart beating so fast it felt like it would burst out of her chest. She didn't want to think about anything else other than getting back.
Sofia bolted around the corner onto the street, ran a few more paces and spotted the blue door. Running up the steps to the front door, Sofia fumbled briefly with the key as she wiped away a falling tear from her eye with her free hand. When she managed to get turn the lock, she flung the door open so violently that it accidently hit the wall. She barged in, kicking the door behind her with her foot and hearing it slam loudly. She took long strides into the living room and leaned up against the back of one of the armchairs, head in her hands, and sinking down to the floor.
At that point Sofia couldn't stop herself from crying. She tried to steady her breathing and in that very second, but she felt like she could just crumble under the pressure.
"I can't do this anymore," She whispered to herself, dropping the English accent. "This is too much. I'm only one kid."
There was a pause in the air.
"Is everything okay, Em?" A voice came, seemingly from out of nowhere.
Startled, Sofia jumped up from the floor, gasping loudly as she suddenly straightened herself up. She looked to see where the voice came from: Han was casually leaning up against the frame of the door that led into the kitchen, arms folded and looking at her expectedly.
"Han! You scared me." Sofia exclaimed.
He raised his eyebrows. "I scared you?"
That's when Sofia realised, she had been speaking in her own accent. She stumbled back into Emma's as she attempted to reassure Han, trying to hide the fact that she'd been crying.
"Sorry, I- I mean, you frightened me. Like, I didn't know you were standing there," Sofia corrected herself, in the right accent.
She forgot that Han would be in the house still! He must've heard her barge in. What else had he heard?
Sofia forced herself to regain her composure, so Han didn't become more suspicious than he already was.
"Everything's fine." She said with a forced smile.
Still, Han looked at her with a quizzical look on his face, clearly not convinced; this made Sofia anxious.
"Are you sure there's nothing you wanna tell me?' Han spoke up after a moment, "Because, I gotta say Em, at this point I'm kinda worried about you."
Sofia shrugged and did her best to act normal even though on the inside she was panicking, "What makes you think that?" She asked.
"Oh, I don't know," Han pushed himself off the door frame and started to walk further into the room.
"Well for starters, you're crying. And what else?" He asked himself sarcastically, pretending to think, "Oh yeah! Other things like how Chewie never comes near you anymore. Or how you've seemed to have forgotten the layout of your own home. And how all of a sudden you're so American and you're calling you mother 'Mom' which you've never done before."
Sofia sucked in sharp breath.
She didn't think anyone would notice that detail. To be honest Sofia hadn't even realised she'd been doing that, and so far, her mom didn't seem to notice.
Han had though, and now Sofia was internally panicking that the plan was about to be ruined. She had to salvage this situation as best as she could and throw Han off the trail.
Sofia tensed up but did her best to outwardly stay cool, "Han, I just... changed a bit over the summer that's all." She said calmly.
He stared at her for a little while longer. Not in an intimidating way but a confused way, as if he was trying to figure her out.
Sofia stood there with bated breath.
But eventually, Han shrugged his shoulders and put his hands up, "Okay." Which were words that made Sofia feel immense relief.
Han continued, sighing slightly. "I don't know, Em. It's just- It's like you're a different person. It's almost like you're-" And he immediately stopped speaking.
Sofia scrunched up her brow as Han silently cursed himself.
"You know what? Forget it." He said as he started to walk away, back into the kitchen.
That's when Sofia realised. Was he talking about her? Did Han know about her? Sofia, not Emma. No, of course he would. Jyn and Han have been friends for years, he would definitely know about it if she had twins. Sofia's gut was telling her that Han knew about her, knew about everything that had happened.
What if?
"Almost like I was who, Han?" Sofia asked, curiously, trying to coax the answer out of him.
Han turned around, looking like he was deeply regretting he spoke up in the first place, and he held his hands up slightly, "No one. It doesn't matter. Forget I said anything." And again, he turned back round.
Her mind raced. Maybe she could say something? It was a risk, she knew that. If she revealed herself, he could tell her mom and then it would be an instant game over. But a part of Sofia felt that this is a secret he could keep, even if it meant lying to Jyn, one of his closest friends. After all he was a sort of a rebel at heart himself...
And just like that she blurted it out, "Almost as if I were Sofia?"
Han stopped dead in his tracks upon hearing Sofia's name, a name he hadn't heard in about 15 years. His eyes grew wide as he slowly turned around to face Emma. He had no idea how she knew that name and it stunned him.
A silence hung between the two and Sofia swallowed nervously. Time, at least to Han, moved slowly and a second seemed to last days as he processed what was in front of him; it was like his brain had ceased to exist.
Finally, with a creased brow and a look of disbelief, he broke the silence.
"You- you know about Sofia?" He said in a quiet voice.
Sofia took in a deep breath.
Here goes nothing.
"I am Sofia." She finished, in her own accent.
Han's face suddenly morphed into about a hundred expressions before it settled for a look of confusion and shock, which instantly disappeared as a dumbfounded look replaced it. And then suddenly his face softened as a huge smile formed across his features.
It was as though he had had an epiphany. It was if he was looking at her for the first time in his life. Though in a way, Sofia guessed he was because this was the first time he was looking at her as Sofia and not Emma. Heck, he probably hadn't even seen Sofia since she was only a few months old.
As another silence fell, it was broken immediately by the sound of the front door opening and closing. It was Jyn, and she walked into the living room as she had finally caught up to Sofia.
"Emma, why would you run off like that when I'm trying to tell you something?" She was clearly a bit frustrated, but her daughter didn't look at her or even acknowledge she had walked into the room.
Jyn followed her gaze across the room where Han stood, looking at Emma with an almost laughable look on his face.
"Han, why are you looking at her that?" Jyn asked, nearly losing her patience with the whole situation.
Sofia held her breath and she thought Han was going to give her away in that moment but instead, he snapped out of his trance, the smile still there.
"Looking at her like what?" He directed at Jyn. "I'm not looking at her any differently, this is how I've always looked at her. Ever since she was a baby, a tiny baby, this is how look at her." He then bent his knees slightly and opened his arms. "Come 'ere, kid!"
Without hesitation, Sofia walked over to Han and threw her arms around him.
Han was almost laughing as he hugged Emma. No, not Emma. Sofia, the girl who he had thought was Emma. He couldn't quite believe the that it wasn't Emma in front of him, but her sister instead. In the past, his mind had sometimes wondered to Sofia and now she was here. He didn't care how, he just continued to embrace her.
"Oh my God!" He exclaimed. "You're so huge! I can't believe you're actually here!"
Pulling away from Sofia he started to back away into the direction of the kitchen. "You know what? I'm going to cook you something. I have no idea what it will be but I'm going to do it and it will be great!" And with that he disappeared into the kitchen closing the door behind him. Sofia could've sworn she saw him wipe away a tear.
She honestly felt a million times better now that Han knew the secret. Finally, it wasn't just her and Emma alone in this, they now had back up. It was wonderful to finally introduce herself to Han as herself and not as Emma. She couldn't wait to properly get to know him.
But she had more important things to do at this very second in time because her mom was still standing there.
Clearly Jyn wasn't too concerned what happened with Han just now, because she immediately turned her focus back on the conversation she tried to have with her daughter moments before.
"Em, come here," Jyn said sitting on the couch. "We need to talk."
Sofia, realising she couldn't run anywhere anymore, perched herself next to her mom. She had a horrible feeling in her stomach that she knew what Jyn was going to say but a part of her prayed that it wasn't that. Please anything but that.
"Okay. Talk to me." Sofia said.
Jyn composed herself and then spoke, "Emma, I haven't been fair to you. I've been keeping something from you for some time now and it's only right that I stop delaying the inevitable." She paused for a moment, breathed in deeply and finally said what she'd been meaning to say this whole time, "Me and Scott are getting married."
It was as if someone had violently pushed Sofia to the ground and knocked all the wind out of her lungs. That horrible feeling she had was right. Even if she suspected that that was what Jyn was going to tell her she didn't know for sure, she was still in the dark. But now the curtain had been drawn back and Sofia's worst fear was confirmed. Finally hearing it said aloud was as horrible as you could possibly imagine. All of a sudden, once again, Sofia had to force herself to not cry.
There was an uncomfortable silence as Sofia processed the news and she had to force herself to talk.
"No. No, mom you can't." Her voice nearly broke.
Jyn tried to be sympathetic; she figured her daughter would have difficulty adjusting. "Look, Em-" But Sofia cut her off.
"You just can't! I mean for starters you've only known him for five months!"
Jyn tried to interject, "Em-"
"How you going to marry someone you've known for less than half a year?!" Sofia basically shouted.
"Emma-"
But Sofia ignored her as she carried on ranting, "¡¿Estás demente?! Debo estar soñando. Scott no es la persona adecuada para ti. Esto es completamente loco no puedo-"
"Em!" Jyn grabbed Sofia's shoulders to try and calm her down, which worked but then she realised that her daughter had suddenly switched languages halfway through talking. She looked at her with a questioning look. "Were you just speaking Spanish?"
Sofia's eyes widened a little and quickly tried to think of an excuse. "I, uh- learned a little at camp."
Jyn let go of Sofia's shoulders, "Huh."
"I'm sorry. Let's just talk about this calmly and rationally." Sofia said, trying to breath steady.
"Yeah, and in English please if you don't mind," Jyn laughed slightly and then placed her hand on Sofia's. "I just don't understand, Em. What has gotten into you?"
"Nothing. Nothing, it's just- Oh, mom you can't get married, it's going to completely ruin absolutely everything!" And Sofia jumped out of her seat and ran down the hallway towards the back garden.
Jyn, getting rather annoyed that she kept doing running off, called after her, "Emma!"
She let out a frustrated groan and was about to her put her head in her hands in defeat when she noticed Han gazing into the living room from the kitchen as if he had been spying on them.
Han noticed her looking. "Don't look at me, I don't know anything." And the kitchen door slammed shut.
So much for his advice, she thought bitterly.
She decided to go sit in her armchair across from the sofa and leaned her head back in exhaustion. What she wouldn't give for a glass of whiskey right now. Or several.
Then, the front door opened once more, "Hiya!" A cheerful voice came from the hallway. It was Scott.
Jyn groaned again, wishing that she could just spend a moment alone in peace. She forced her face form a smile as Scott walked into the living room, holding a Harrods bag.
"Hello." Jyn greeted back as Scott enthusiastically placed himself on the edge of the coffee table.
He looked over at her and his eyes narrowed slightly.
"What's the matter, Jyn? You look worn out." He said, and for a second Jyn couldn't tell if she was touched by his concern or if she felt ever so slightly insulted.
Before she could decide, Scott spoke again, "I think you need a drink." And he leaned down digging around in the Harrods bag that was placed at his feet pulling out a small black box. He opened the lid and pulled out a little silver bell from a cushion of blue velvet.
Jyn opened her mouth to question the purchase when Scott started violently ringing it.
"Han." He called out, and when there was no reply, he rang the bell again, "Han!" That time there was a little more urgency in his voice.
Jyn snorted. "What the hell is that for?"
Scott looked back at her. "Ah, don't you love it? It's just what we need in this house- HAN!"
"You're joking, right?" Jyn laughed.
But Scott gave her a completely straight face and in a flat tone of voice replied, "No. Why would it be a joke?"
Jyn stared at Scott with pursed lips as she couldn't quite understand why he had bought a bell. He did know that Han was just a friend and didn't actually work for-
"Ah, Han, there you are. Finally." Scott said as Han slowly talked into the living room looking like he wanted to punch Scott in the face.
"You rang?" The words left Han's mouth slowly as if trying not to let his anger boil over; Jyn felt bad for him.
But Scott didn't, and he started giving drink orders to Han. "We'll have two glasses of whiskey on ice. And make Miss Erso's a double."
Han stubbornly folded his arms across his chest as he couldn't believe he was being ordered around. And by Scott of all people! Where did he come off? Han turned his gaze towards Jyn and raised his eyebrows.
Jyn gave him a mournful look, "Please, Han. I can feel a migraine coming on."
And he gave an inward smile to his friend as she mouthed the word 'sorry' to him and went into the kitchen to fix the drinks.
When they were alone, Jyn started speaking.
"I told Emma." She directed at Scott, who darted his head in Jyn's direction.
"And?" He questioned in a hopeful voice.
"She went absolutely ballistic. She started yelling at me in Spanish. I didn't even know she could speak Spanish!" And Jyn's feelings of frustration all bubbled up back to the surface again.
Scott pondered this for a moment. "Maybe I could go talk to her? Try and smooth things out a little bit."
"You know, I don't think she'd want to see you right now." Jyn said.
"Well, I can try, can't I? We've got to break the ice at some point." And with that, Scott stood up and made his way towards the garden before Jyn could protest.
Sofia sat in the summer house at the bottom of the garden, swimming in her own thoughts.
How was she going to break this news to Emma? And how were they going to go forward with their plan now that their mom was engaged? Sofia just couldn't understand why her mom was even doing this. Why Scott, of all people? Could she not see how much of an idiot he was? There was no way she loved him as much as she had loved her dad, if she even really loved Scott at all.
Sofia thought back to the torn photograph of her parents, their faces filled with so much adoration, giving each other looks reserved only for each other. Surely Jyn hadn't looked at Scott that way, she couldn't have. Sofia had no idea what to do.
And to make matters worse, Scott was now approaching her. She rolled her eyes loudly as he stopped outside the open door.
"Knock, knock," He said, knocking the door frame. "Mind if I join you?"
"Go ahead. It's seems as though anyone is welcome in this house." Sofia shot back bitterly.
Scott sat down inside the summerhouse and Sofia didn't even look at him as she gruffly folded her arms across her chest. She could smell his strong aftershave and it nearly made her gag.
"I'm guessing the news of the engagement came as a bit of a shock then?"
"Pretty much."
Scott put his hands together, "Look Emma, I get it. I know that this must be hard for you, but what me and your mum have, it's special. You'll find that with someone one day. You see, love is this amazing thing that-"
Sofia looked at Scott with a look of total disgust on her face. What was this drivel he was spouting?
"Okay, I'm going to stop you right there." She interjected immediately, cutting off Scott.
There was a pause.
"Well? Aren't you going to say anything?" Scott asked promptly.
"No, I just wanted you to stop talking." Sofia snapped back.
Scott's let out a laugh. "Wow. You really don't like me, do you?"
Sofia side-eyed him. "I don't even know you. Look you don't need to get all whimsical, I know exactly what my mom sees in you."
"You do?" Scott questioned with a lifted eyebrow.
"Yeah," She answered, turning her head to glare at him. "I mean you're young, attractive and it's not as if the woman doesn't have eyes. But really a relationship should be based on more than just sex, and from what I can gather, I seriously doubt you and my mom have that much in common with each other. Wouldn't you agree?" Sofia retorted and this made Scott laugh louder this time.
"Your mother underestimates you." He remarked.
At this, Sofia stared at Scott dead in the face, "But you won't. Right Scott?"
"Being young isn't illegal you know. And for your information, your mother adores me. She's always been the kind of woman I planned on marrying."
"And what kind would that be? The kind who has thousands tucked away in a bank?" Sofia sneered.
He was only with her for her money and they both knew that; he just wouldn't say it aloud. Sofia could see right through his innocent nice-guy routine and she wanted to make sure he knew that.
That last comment seemed to have done the trick though, because Scott's demeanour changed as quick as anything and he suddenly became very hostile
"Okay, you listen here," he said sharply. "I am marrying your mother in a matter of months and no amount of your stupid tantrums will change that. So, I would suggest that in the meantime that you don't piss me off. You are in way over your head. Am I being clear?"
Sofia wasn't intimidated by him. Any grown man who felt he needed to stand his ground against a 15-year-old girl was not one to fear. Her father could've wiped the floor with him.
So, all Sofia did was lean in slightly and plastered a sickeningly sweet smile on her face.
"Crystal."
Sofia then pushed herself off her seat and started walking back to the house, wanting to get away from Scott as quickly as possible.
She needed to get into contact with her sister urgently.
