Chapter 11
Degeneration
In the medical room on the Green Earth land cruiser.
Kurumu is sitting up on the fixed medical bed with her legs dangling off the side. Star places a clasp on the bandaging that she just finished changing on the succubus' shoulder. Her top is currently off, exposing her upper body.
"You know, you are healing rather quickly from your injury. There are already signs of tissue repair. You should consider yourself lucky. That battle with Axe was rather rough." Star says from behind her.
"It's probably because of what I am. It's got nothing on a vampire's ability though."
"Are vampires really that powerful?"
A slight shiver goes down Kurumu's spine as she thinks about all of the things that Tsukune, Moka, and the rest of Moka's family had done.
"Yeah. They're something else. Top level. I've got nothing on them. That's how powerful they are."
"That sounds pretty impressive. But, you're pretty amazing to me, Kurumu. I am actually a little jealous. I feel so powerless when I watch you two fight." She says while picking up Kurumu's bra.
She looks at the cups of Kurumu's bra and her eyes go wide as she compares them to herself.
'I guess strength really isn't the only thing that she's got me beat in.' Star muses to herself.
Her musings get interrupted as the blue-haired girl speaks up again.
"Thanks, Star. But, you know, you're not so bad yourself. I think you sell yourself a little short."
Star slips Kurumu's bra back on and then she clasps the bra in the back.
"What do you mean?" Asks Star.
"You keep everyone together, you know? Despite everyone's differences, despite how bleak everything is around us, you keep everyone going and together. That goes especially for Blade."
"You really think so?"
"Yeah, I do." Kurumu replies.
Star sighs. "They can be a pain the butt sometimes."
"They sure can."
They share a laugh together as Star begins helping her get her top back on. Kurumu cringes a little from pain as she moves her arm slightly so that they could get her top on. They slip her arm inside her sleeve.
"Hey, Kurumu, I just want to thank you for helping Blade out there. The others do too, but I really want to thank you."
Star puts Kurumu's arm in a sling.
"I've got something to say to you, too. I want the three of us to be happy together."
There is a little bit of a silence after Kurumu says that.
'Would you say something, damnit.' The succubus curses in her head.
'What on earth do I say to something like that. I want him, and I know that she wants him, too. But, I just don't know how I feel about sharing him. I will admit that she has helped push him towards me though. That night she was in my dreams was pretty wild, too.'
Star lets out a little huff. "Thank you for your honesty, Kurumu. I just don't know how to respond. There is just so much going on. We haven't exactly had much time to develop any kind of relationship. He is so focused on getting those spider crabs and defeating Darkon and those other Teknomen."
While Star slowly buttons up her blouse, Kurumu glances up at her and gives her a serious look. "You have to make a little bit of time for it, Star."
"But we both realize we have feelings for each other." She tells her with a strained smile.
"That's not enough. You'll regret it in the long run. Trust me, I know."
She scoots off the bed and walks out the door.

Walking in the living quarters of the land cruiser, Kurumu sees Blade's Room. She gets a little bit of a smirk.
'Maybe I'll have him spoil me a little. He should cater to an injured girl. Okay. Maybe that's a little much for a guy like him, but maybe he'll humor me a little, right?' She muses.
As she walks up, she realizes his door is open, but his light is off. 'Is he going to sleep with his door open? How do you even get an automatic door to stay open? Well, whatever.'
She leans over when she gets to the doorway and pops her head out. As she already noticed, the lights were off. He was leaning along a slightly raised platform sticking out of the wall that served as a bed. He was holding his head. She could tell he seemed off.
"Blade, is everything all right?" She asks while coming in.
She sits on a padded bench built into the opposing wall of the bed.
He gives a slight groan, but then he eventually looks over to her.
"I'm fine. I think that I just need to rest a little. Maybe some water."
He slowly turns around inches his way to the small, heavy duty table in the middle of the room. On the table is a book and some papers. The is also a glass of water. He reaches for the water.
'Is his hand shaking?' Kurumu questions in her head.
He tries to pick up the glass, and he loses his strength about midway up. The glass shatters and the water spills all over the floor.
'What the hell is happening to me?' He wonders to himself.
Even though she noticed O'rouke's orange jumpsuit quickly fade away, her attention quickly goes back to blade. She gets up.
"Hey, are you really alright?"
She could see a little of horror come over blade's face, but he doesn't really respond to her. She tugs on him and he haphazardly follows her lead as she leads him to the bench.
"Just sit tight. I'll get something to clean this up and some fresh water for you."
"I'll get it. I said I'm fine, right?" He says back.
"Yeah, you're full of shit, Blade. We'll talk when I get back. Just sit tight 'til then."
He sighs.

Kurumu comes back with Star. Star cleans up the mess while Kurumu sits next to Blade on the bench. Blade crosses his arms in annoyance.
"Great. I didn't need you cleaning up after me, too."
"She's concerned about you too, Blade." Kurumu retorts with a furrowed brow.
After getting the glass up, Star cleans up the water with a small rag.
"Are you feeling ill? You haven't been eating as much as you usually do."
Kurumu laughs slightly while imagining Blade scarfing down food. "Yeah, usually you're stuffing your face with whatever you can get your hands on.
"You think so?" He says slightly bewilderedly. "I suppose you're right."
Star comes over and feels Blade's head.
"You have a bit of a fever, Blade."
He uncrosses his arms a lightly swats Star's hand away from his head.
"It's fine. It's probably nothing worry about. I just need some rest."
Kurumu and Star both frown.
"You sure are stubborn." Says the succubus.
"He sure is." Adds Star.
Blade turns his head away from them.
"If this keeps up, then I'll try running some tests."
The Teknoman was about to rebuttal, but Kurumu beats him to it.
"Don't even think about saying no. Just let her do it, or I'll have to kick your butt."
This finally generates a smirk from the normally grumpy man.
"I'd like to see you try that, but I guess I'll give in."
"Thank you, Blade." Star says earnestly.

The following evening, during dinner, everyone was gathered in what would be considered a living room if it were a house. This included not only the space knights, but also O'Rourke and a few of his team that came to assist them with Blade's fight against Axe.
O'Rourke, an Irishman that is part of an elite force, was wearing his typical orange jump suit, and his left eye stays closed due to an injury. He explains how he met Blade and how Blade saved his team from a pinch they were in. He also shows everyone a recorded message from their commander. They find out in the message that their ship, the Blue Earth, has been repaired.
What should have been great news to Blade (Because it meant that they no longer needed a crystal to get to Darkon, fell short for the Teknoman. He acted out of it and was slightly bewildered. He hardly touched his food. His vision also blurred off and on and he was nearly seeing double.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Nighttime.
After everyone had cleaned up from dinner, O'Rourke was sitting against some supplies outside next to a campfire. Every soften there is a crack from the fire. Miles O'Rourke tilts his head back as he slugs down some water from a canteen.
Ringo comes down the steps and sees him doing this. "Hey, take it easy there. There's not a lot of fresh water left."
"Awww, alright. Don't cry. There is more in the jeep."
"Hey, I know Blade didn't have the chance to thank you, but you really did save his hide back there. When he was fighting Axe."
"I only did what any good soldier would have to, and that's to protect your best weapon." O'Rouke replies.
'I really wonder if that truly is entirely why.' Thinks Ringo.
"I hate to say it, but he's our only hope against these aliens." O'Rourke adds.
"I'm in this, too." Says Ringo.
"We're all in this thing together, son. We're fighting for our lives. We can't let our egos get in our way. In order to win we have to be one unit."
"So when do we leave, and where are we going? Exactly where is this new command center?"
"Well, the new headquarters are in Alaska, but we've got a stop to make along the way."
"What are you talking about?"
"Iceland. We are manufacturing some arms for us to use on the moon. There is a warehouse there that has a special microchip we need to pick up before we go to the Space Knight headquarters in Alaska. Ye follow me?"
Ringo nods.
"Good, lad. Now we should get some shut eye. We have a long journey ahead of us." The Irishman adds.
"Yeah. Well, see ya in the morning sarge."
"Hold on. Before ye hit the sack, there is something I should tell ye about."
He goes on to tell Ringo about the incident he witnessed with the glass of water.
"Impossible. That's nuts." Ringo instantly says.
"I wouldn't have believed it either had I not seen it. Let's just hope that this condition is just temporary. Because when we battle and he's not 100% in charge, the aliens will win. Count on it."
Ringo looks down and grits his teeth.
"Don't say anything about this. I don't want to alarm the others, but the commander told me something."
"What did he tell you?" Kurumu asks sternly.
Both O'Rourke and Ringo look up to the voice that interrupted their conversation. Kurumu scowls down at them. She extends out her wings and tail. Then she flies off from the top and goes down to where the two were sitting.
She instantly regrets making the decision to fly down, and she winces from the pain. Her free arm quickly raises and coddles her injured shoulder.
"Relax, lass. I'm goin' nowhere where ye have ta chase after me. Since ye already heard me, then there's no keepin' it from ye."
She clumsily sits down near the two of them.
"First off, I wanted t' say that was a pretty good show out there. I don't know what ye are, but I'm sure glad yer on our side."
"Thanks, I was doing good up until I faced against Axe."
"Yeah, well, you fought a Teknoman. They're not exactly a walk in the park. You did good, Kurumu." Ringo says.
"I appreciate that, but I want to know about Blade."
"I guess I'll get right to the point then. I was waiting for the right time to tell ye, but he's degenerating."
"What!" Ringo and Kurumu both say.
"No way. Not him." The blue-haired girl also adds.
"It's true. I've got no reason t' lie."
Kurumu huffs.
"Alright. Let's say this IS true. Why?"
"His tissue structure is collapsing. Every time he transforms, it takes a toll on his body. And, the wear and tear is accumulative. Commander Jamison said this Teknoman business is hard on the body."
"I guess I can see that." The succubus admits. "I mean, He goes from being a human, to someone that has warheads mounted on his shoulders."
"That's why he was eating all the time, too. He was pounding down food like a fat man at a hot dog festival." Adds Ringo.
O'Rourke nods.
"If he transforms just once more, he me just might not come back."
Kurumu gasps and covers her mouth with her good hand.
Ringo frowns and crosses his arms. 'There's no way. This is Blade we're talking about. What else does he have to go through damnit."
"Please tell me the commander has something he can do to help Blade." Kurumu says to O'Rourke.
"We will have t' get that answer from the commander himself when we get to the Alaska base."
"You're kidding, right? That'll take us at least a month to get there." Ringo says.
"Fuck." Slips from Kurumu's mouth.
"I wish I had something better t' say, but I don't. You've just got to grit yer teeth and we'll make it through this. That includes you, lass. You need to heal that shoulder of yours."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Blade's room.
Blade climbs up onto his bed with Star watching.
"You know-" He begins to say.
She quickly interrupts him.
"I know what you're going to say. Frankly, I don't want to hear it. You've been in a daze all day today. I don't know what's going on, but just take it easy for a while. It's okay for you to let me dote on you a little bit. It's not like I'm trying to take your manhood away from you."
'And Kurumu told me to try a little harder.' She thinks to herself.
Not feeling up for arguing any more (mostly for the lack of energy), Blade decides to give in to the girl with midnight hair.
"Alright. Alright." He says to her.
She gives a little bit of pout as her cheeks puff out a little.
"Blade, I . . . I . . ." She begins to say with some hesitation. "You know that I love you, right. I care so much about you. I don't want anything happening to you. Every time you go into battle, my heart sinks with worry. You have people here to come back to. You have me . . . . and Kurumu to come back to." Some tears stream down her face.
This slightly rips him away from his grogginess. Despite how lousy he was feeling, he decides to reach into himself and give as best a response as he could give her.
"Thanks, Star." He musters up a small smile for her. "I think that I really needed to hear that. You know I'm not very good with words. You, and even Kurumu, give me something to fight for. I still have my anger towards Darkon, but you two give me something to come back to. I don't know about all this crap with Kurumu, But I certainly love you."
Her tears change to tears or joy from hearing him actually say those words. But, She decides that she wants to give something back to her succubus friend for her kindness.
But, first thing's first.
She leans over the bed and she gets close to his face.
'She really accepts me for who I am.' He thinks to himself.
Star closes her eyes and leans over more. Blade, actually taking the cue, closes his eyes and preps for what was coming. She uses a hand and tucks some of her hair behind her ear. Their lips meet and she gives him a heart-felt kiss. It was nothing fancy, but it was earnest. When they part, she looks down at him.
"Thank you, Blade. I want to tell you something, though. Don't sell Kurumu short. I don't know how to explain everything going on in my own chest, but she deeply cares about you. Maybe it really is love for her, too. Despite that, she's really pushed for me to develop my relationship with you instead of just completely fighting me for you."
"Hmph. I guess it makes sense, but I still think that you are both crazy for falling for someone like me."
"Well, you're just going to have to deal with that. This means you need to be crazy enough to always come back to us. Good night, Blade. Get some rest and I'll see you in the morning."
"Yeah. You too."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
A few minutes later.
Blades hears a knock on his door.
"Yeah." He says.
The door opens with a soft woosh from the sliding. His eyes take a few seconds to adjust but he sees that it's Kurumu.
"Hey." She says softly. "How are you feeling?"
"Still not quite alright, but maybe tomorrow will be better."
'Yeah. Tomorrow we need to talk. Tonight, I need to talk to Star.' She thinks to herself.
"What brings you hear?" He asks.
She gets a big grin. For herself, it's not only to hide her discomfort from her conversation with O'Rourke, but also for mischievousness.
"I wanted to say goodnight to my mate of fate."
"What if I say no?"
She pouts. "You're not allowed to. I am an injured girl, you know. Can't I just get a little bit of love?"
"If you want a kiss goodnight, then you're going to have to come over hear and get it."
She crosses her arms. "That's not very convincing. Geeze."
"Well, I don't really feel like getting up, but I am trying do this 'affectionate' stuff. You've been good to me and very upfront with what you want. Star also mumbled something about you helping her."
"Ooooooh. So, did you give her a sweet kiss goodnight?" She asks teasingly.
"I did."
The comment half hurts her, but she knows that she also pushed for them to keep their relationship going, too.
"And you're okay with kissing me, too?"
"If you're going to keep asking me questions like that, then I will change my mind and you can leave."
"Okay, okay. Relax." She says while walking over.
She leans over and looks at him. "Thank you." Se says and then she kisses him.
The kiss was also genuine as he gives it to her, even if it wasn't as emotionally driven as the one he gave Star. It was enough to send a warm jolt through her whole body.
'This feels wonderful.' She muses to herself in an almost nirvana-like state.
"So, can I jump into your bed now and sleep next to you?"
He gives a sigh. "Get the hell out of here." He says somewhat playfully as he rolls over.
"Can't blame a girl for trying. Good night, Blade."
"Yeah."
She practically skips out of the room and the door shuts.
She skips happily up to the point she reaches Star's room and she stops.
'I hate to break up this wonderful feeling with such a crappy topic, but we need to talk.'
She knocks on Star's door.
