Caroline packed the last of her clothing into the last cardboard box. Two days and five hours later and she was finally finished packing the dorm room she had lived in for the past year. Although it was only May the summer breeze was filtering through the room and keeping Caroline cool despite the manual labor.
The door to the room swung open to reveal Katerina 'Katherine' Petrova in the most unusual sight of wearing a sweatshirt and oversized sweatpants. She still looked like someone who should be gracing the covers of magazines but the ensemble still managed to startle Caroline, who in the year she had known Katherine, had never seen her dressed in a material that could be described as 'comfortable.'
Katherine walked into the room and threw the empty cardboard boxes onto her bed before also throwing herself down on the mattress.
'Should I ask?' Caroline said with great hesitation, she had a feeling where this conversation was going.
Katherine blew out a long sigh 'I haven't heard from Elijah.'
Caroline nodded, 'He did tell you he would be busy with BookExpo this month. Nik says it's one of the most important events of the year for them at Mikaelson Publishing.'
Katherine sat up, 'Niklaus has still made plenty of time for you.'
Caroline rolled her eyes, 'Katherine, you made a decidedly not sober declaration to Elijah not even two weeks ago. Give him some time to process the information.'
'I shouldn't have said anything.' Katherine shook her head as she stood up and threw her hands up in the hair, 'Twenty one years I have never been rejected by a guy and look at me now! I open my big stupid mouth and tell him I've always had a crush on him and now I am wearing leisurewear! Leisurewear, Caroline!'
'I think calling it leisurewear might be generous.' Caroline mumbled as she began taping the last boxes shut.
Katherine whipped her head around, 'What did you say?'
Caroline smiled, 'Nothing!'
Katherine narrowed her eyes before throwing one of her pillows at the blonde.
Caroline dodged the pillow, 'Hey!'
Katherine sat back down on the bed and Caroline joined her by sitting on her own now bare bed.
'There is a lot for him to process Katherine, he has known you since you were a baby and he is nearly ten years old than you. He is probably one of the few men in your life who has never looked at you that way before.' Caroline tried to explain how she imagined Elijah was feeling.
A knock at the door silenced Katherine's response.
Caroline checked her watch, it was only noon and she wasn't expecting to be kicked out of the dorm room until tomorrow afternoon.
'Come in!' Katherine called out before laying back down on the bed.
The door opened to reveal Klaus, dressed as usual in a suit, carrying two bouquets of flowers.
Caroline immediately beamed at the sight of her boyfriend and jumped up to greet him.
Still aware of Katherine's current condition she kissed Klaus on the cheek which caused him to raise an eyebrow.
Caroline angled her head in the direction of Katherine and Klaus faintly nodded before extending the bouquet of white roses to Caroline, 'Happy nearly moving out day.'
Caroline accepted the beautiful arrangement and couldn't help but laugh at Klaus's expression, he was grinning widely and she knew it was mainly due to the fact that he would never have to spend a night in a dorm room again.
Klaus extended the bouquet of sunflowers towards Katherine, 'For the ray of sunshine in everyone's life.'
Katherine glared, 'Go fu-'
'Now now!' Caroline interrupted her best friend, 'Play nice children.'
Klaus chuckled, 'I had an hour set aside to come see you here one last time.'
'How is the BookExpo prep going?' Caroline asked as she went to put the flowers in a bottle of water she had been drinking. Everything else was packed, it would have to do.
'It is a mad house but hopefully it will all be worth it at the end of the month.' Klaus replied before sparing Katherine another glance, 'Elijah had to fly to Los Angeles yesterday to secure a author with an extreme case of flight risk.'
Katherine barely acknowledged the bone Klaus threw her in terms of Elijah updates and rolled over to face the wall.
Klaus rolled his eyes before grabbing one of Caroline's hands when she came closer, 'Are you still able to come to my apartment for dinner tonight?'
'Yes I can't wait.' They had both been so busy and it had been over a week since they had been able to spend significant time together.
'Good, I have a surprise for you.' Nik whispered before leaning in quietly for a kiss.
'I love surprises.' Caroline whispered back before placing her lips against his. They had been together for nine months but Caroline still felt giddy when they kissed.
'Do you two mind?' Katherine sat up and threw the remaining pillow at the pair.
Caroline felt something come into contact with her face, her body was locked, she tried to open her eyes but they remained shut. Her vision was bright behind her eyelids and she could hear people shouting and saying her name.
'Caroline? Can you hear me Caroline? Caroline?' Voices she didn't recognise kept speaking to her but her mouth remained closed despite her desire to answer.
Caroline felt something touch her face again and the world dimmed.

Klaus rushed through the entrance doors of the local hospital of whatever part of Upstate New York he was in, at this point Klaus wouldn't have been able to say what year it was, never mind his current location.
Klaus ran up to the nurse's desk, Bonnie and half the wedding party were close on his heel.
'Caroline Mikaelson- Caroline Forbes. What room is she in? Is she in surgery?' Klaus spoke fast and direct to the nurse standing behind the desk.
A woman dressed in dark blue scrubs looked up from the computer and did a double take at the sight before her eyes. Within two minutes the majority of the waiting room was now made up of guests of Rebekah Mikaelson and Stefan Salvatore's wedding.
The nurse searched the details before seeking confirmation of Klaus' identity.
'I'm her husband.' Klaus replied without hesitation.
Bonnie, who had been standing beside him the whole time, looked to the side, avoiding eye contact with the skeptical nurse who was staring at Klaus bare ring finger that was resting on the desk.
Klaus stared at the nurse before muttering, 'Ex-husband.'
The nurse nodded, 'I see, and you are?' She looked to Bonnie.
Bonnie winced before answering, knowing she may face the wrath of Klaus, 'I am her roommate and emergency contact Bonnie Bennett, here is my ID, Caroline's next of kin, her mother, lives in Virginia.'
'Come with me Ms Bennett.' The nurse spoke again, before walking towards the double doors leading out of the waiting room.
'If you think for one second-' Klaus began.
Bonnie shot him a look, 'Do not start Klaus, I will find out everything and come back and tell you.' Bonnie started to walk before turning around to Klaus, 'Find out if Kol okay,' She took a deep breath before adding, 'Please.'
Klaus nodded sombrely as he watched Bonnie follow the nurse through the doors. As he turned around his mother and father were walking past him following another nurse, 'They are taking us to Kol.' Mikael spoke lowly, never one to show emotion.
Esther nodded, her eyes wet with tears, 'Caroline? The baby?' She asked Klaus.
Klaus could barely speak, 'Bonnie will find out.'
Esther looked confused as Mikael nodded in understanding. Caroline and Klaus were no longer married. His right to access her in an emergency situation ceased a long time ago.
Esther and Mikael disappeared behind the doors and Klaus returned to the waiting room. A third nurse had appeared looking for his own patient and was attempting to usher the wedding party out of the hospital.
The dark haired male nurse was speaking to Rebekah, who was still clad in her wedding dress, her faced streaked with tears, 'We cannot have this many people in the waiting room, there will be no room for patients as they enter, not to mention it is becoming a fire hazard.'
Stefan, who had one arm wrapped around Rebekah nodded at the nurse, 'We understand.' The groom began talking to guests and the crowd slowly dispersed from the waiting room leaving only Klaus, Rebekah, Stefan, Elijah, Katherine and Finn.
Finn and Katherine were both on their respective phones.
Elijah immediately walked up to Klaus when he joined the group.
'Brother how are they?' Elijah clasped a hand on to Klaus's shoulder.
'I do not know. Bonnie has gone to see Caroline, they wouldn't let me see in. Our parents are with Kol.' Klaus answered before sitting down in a nearby chair. The third eldest Mikaelson brother leaned over until his elbows were resting on his knees, his face in his hands.
Katherine finished her call and walked over to where Elijah was looking down at his brother, 'I called Liz, she is on her way to the airport. My assistant is booking her the earliest flight to New York.'
'I should call her.' Klaus talked into his hands.
'There is no need, she will be making arrangements with work. Call her when we know more.' Katherine replied.
Klaus looked up at his sister in law, her face was hard but her lips were trembling, 'Thank you Katerina.'
Katherine nodded, 'Of course.'
Elijah's phone began to buzz, he extracted it from his pocket and sighed when he saw the name on the screen, 'It's the editor at the New York Times, if he is calling me personally he already knows.'
'I will talk to Stefan about getting a statement together. We won't issue anything yet but to be prepared.' Katherine spoke to her husband before squeezing Klaus's shoulder and disappearing across the room.
'She shouldn't have to organise that.' Klaus sat up straighter in his seat.
Elijah sat down beside his younger, 'She needs the distraction, I fear how she will be if she stops to think about what has happened. The only person who rivals me for a space in Katerina's heart is Caroline.'
Klaus nodded in understanding, his breathing was shallow. He had never felt so useless in all his life.
'She will be okay Niklaus, all three of them will be okay.'
Klaus's eyes shot up to his brother, he was never someone to hope, to pray, but in that moment he hoped, he prayed that his brother was right.
