Chapter 24: Rin
As Rin stepped through the gate, bright light blinded her. When her eyes adjusted to the realm she had just entered, she began to take in every detail.
The Diviner Realm was desolate and cold. White sand spread out before her for miles, forming seemingly endless dunes. The only light available was the light of the full moon that hung overhead and there seemed to be no plant life or creatures to stir the night.
Far off in the distance loomed a floating castle made of pure white stone that glowed elegantly in the night sky. The size of it was so great that it seemed to be extremely close, yet looking at the expanse of sand before her, she could tell that she was miles off from the castle itself.
She sighed. She couldn't have been transported closer? Oh well, she guessed that she was in for a hike.
Yet, before she could take a step, another gate opened before her. A familiar looking hooded figure stepped from the gate dressed in the white robes that she always saw him wearing.
"Rin?" The man gasped at her.
There it was again. That voice and that presence that felt so familiar to her, yet she couldn't seem to remember where she had come to them so well.
Then it all clicked and her eyes went wide. A person she couldn't remember. A familiar person. Someone who filled the void in her heart when he appeared and reopened it when he vanished. Someone who's voice she knew, yet couldn't remember from where.
It was a conclusion that she hadn't even realized that she was coming to. A conclusion that made her heart twist in the most painful fashion.
The hooded figure pushed his hood back and the brown eyes from her dreams stared back at her in shock.
"Rin." He whispered. Then his eyes turned to panic. "What are you doing here?! You can't be here! They'll kill you!"
It was him. The man from her dreams. Everything from his dark messy hair to his slightly tanned skin. From his warm brown eyes to his defined cheekbones.
Rin was seriously confused now. Everything she had built up in her mind was crumbling. All this time, she thought that Blake had been erased by a tarot user and that by finding that tarot user, she would be able to bring Blake back. Though that fact still rang true, Rin could have never imagined that Blake was the tarot user. And if he was the tarot user, then that meant that-
"Rin!" Blake yelled; worry evident on his face. "You have to go! Now!"
He was frantically looking around, but Rin didn't care. She strode up to the man she had dreamt of for months. The man she had worked so hard to find. The man that had taken so much out of her. The man she had so desperately wanted to meet. And she slapped him. She slapped him with all the force her aching heart could handle.
The slap echoed out throughout the empty desert and Blake stood there in wide-eyed silence. The slap had done very little in terms of physical pain. In fact, it had barely turned his head at all. But it wasn't the physical damage that hurt the most. What hurt the most was the tears in Rin's eyes as she shook uncontrollably in front of him.
"Rin-" he began, taking a step forward, wanting to comfort her. But the magus quickly cut him off and stepped back.
"No. Not another word from you." She whispered. "I searched for you!" She began to yell as she glared at him with watery, red eyes. "I worked so hard to find a way to remember you! I tracked down lead after lead to find the tarot user who erased you! But I guess I was wrong." Her tone shifted to a betrayed whisper. "All along It was you who had done the erasing." Her voice rose again, but he just took it. "Did you not care about me?!" She cried out. "Did you not care about how I'd feel?! Or how Ben would feel?! Or about your own mother?! How could someone be that selfish?! Why?! Why did you do it...?" finally her chin dropped and she just stood there, shaking. "Why did you leave all of us behind...?"
"I was dying." The diviner said solemnly.
Rin's eyes snapped up to meet his. Suffering and pain swirled in his eyes in a whirlpool of emotion.
"Or at least I thought I was..." he continued. "I didn't want any of you to suffer, so I erased myself from everyone's memories."
Hurt re-entered Rin's eyes. "How could you take that from us? How could you take precious memories? I don't know about the me before you wiped my memories, but I know this me would never want someone I cared about to do that. Even though they would be gone, I would want to hold on to those precious memories. Not have it be like it never happened!"
"Rin," Blake began. "I-"
"Well what do we have here." A man's voice echoed. "A little lovers' quarrel?"
Rin spun to see a gray-haired man wearing black ropes. He smiled at her, but his eyes held no compassion.
"Vollu," she heard Blake acknowledge behind her. His voice sounded panicked though. "I was just about to escort Ms. Tohsaka out. Please forgive her, this was all my doing."
The man, now identified as Vollu, shifted his gaze to Blake and gave the boy a disappointed look. But there was something else in that look as well. Was it hatred? Resentment?
Rin knew this man too. Though his robes had changed, the voice was still the same. It was the man who had opened the gate for her in the first place. The man who had led her here.
"You know the rules, boy." Vollu sighed with fake sympathy. "If she's seen our realm, she must be terminated at once. I don't care how much you watched over her. You failed the moment she found her way here. Rules are rules."
"No! Please, Lord Vollu!" Blake pleaded. "Punish me. Please don't kill her!"
The man laughed in a high-pitched cackle. "Oh, but my dear boy, I am punishing you." The man laughed. "Your punishment is her death. I can't think of anything worse for you."
Blake moved and put himself between Rin and Vollu. "You'll have to go through me first then! I won't allow you to lay a finger on her!"
Rin's eyes widened. He was defending her? And something else rang out about what Vollu had said. Blake had been watching over her? An image of a hooded figure standing over her popped into her mind. Had he saved her back when the mage killers had targeted her? And he had also saved Ben and her from the creature at the pier. So he never stopped being there, even when she couldn't remember him. The woman shook her head in disbelief.
She looked up at Vollu and stepped forward.
"Why would you lead me here if you were just going to kill me?" She called out to him.
Blake looked over at her with wide eyes and then flared back at Vollu.
"You what?!" Blake yelled.
Vollu laughed. "I have no clue what you are talking about my dear. All I know is that a magus that was in over her head stumbled upon a way to reach our realm. Now that said magus has seen it, she must die."
"Rin." Blake said over his shoulder. "When I tell you to, I'm gonna need you to run, got it?"
She shook her head. "There's no way that I'm leaving you alone to fight this man. I just found you. What makes you think-"
"Ten of Swords!" Vollu called.
Ten gigantic, glowing red swords formed and successively fired at the two magi. Each one held enormous power, but Integra had taught Blake a few things.
"Ten of Pentacles!" The junior diviner called in return.
The swords soared through the air to meet the ten circles that now appeared. It seemed that they would pierce right through, but oddly enough they stopped. The ten swords floated in the space in front of the pentacles and began to rotate, pointing back at Vollu.
"Swords card overwritten," Blake announced. "Reorienting magical composition." The swords turned white. "Reorientation complete. Successive fire!"
The swords boomed back at Vollu, making the man curse as he dodged out of the way. When he stood back up straight, he let out a laugh and dusted himself off.
"That was impressive." He chuckled. "Integra has taught you well, boy." Vollu then began to cackle and made a sickening face. "It's a shame I'm going to have to crush you!" He put his hand over his face as his hysterical laughing continued. He obviously didn't seem too bent out of shape about fighting the younger diviner. "I guess I'll have to tell the other masters that it was a training accident! Oh well, it can't be hel-"
Vollu bent over backwards to narrowly avoid Blake's sword strike as it slashed the air above his nose.
"Special composition: Twin Bladed Chariot!" Blake called as he swung lightning fast slashes at a surprised Vollu.
"Well aren't you a clever one!" Vollu laughed as he chariotted out of the way. "It seems Integra was further along in your training than I had anticipated! To think that you could use composition techniques already!"
"Do you ever stop talking?" Blake muttered as he blitzed after him.
"If it bothers you so much, why don't you shut me up like you used to?" Vollu taunted. Blake swung at him again, but the older man narrowly dodged, once more. "Unless of course, you can't? Hmm?"
What had he meant by that?
Blake let out a roar of rage and blurred towards Vollu. "Special Composition: Strong Pentafather." The elder said as he drew two cards.
A glowing red pentacle materialized in front of Vollu as Blake barreled towards it at full speed. The older man bashed the shield forward as the younger man made contact, blasting the unfortunate swordsman backwards.
Blake flew through the air, unable to comprehend what had just happened. Time slowed down, and it seemed he was in the air for a minor eternity. The world was a blur as it passed him by.
The world sped up once more, as the young diviner crashed to the ground, sliding for several more meters until he finally came to a silent stop.
"Blake!" Rin cried as she tried to run to him.
Instantly, Vollu appeared between them, forcing the magus to jump back. The man openly laughed at her when she began to reach for her gems and looked over his shoulder.
"You sure chose a feisty one, boy." The elder called to Blake. "It's a shame that I have to kill her. I think she would have made a great tarot mage."
He didn't seem sorry at all.
"Don't...you...dare." A pained voice struggled out.
Rin's eyes widened as she saw Blake begin to struggle on to his knees. She enhanced her eyes with mana and saw that nearly every bone in his body was fractured. Yet, he still struggled and made it to his feet.
"Hmm?" Vollu looked at the boy in interest. "It seems you still have some fight left in you. That is some remarkable willpower that you have. What's spurring it on? Is it this girl."
"Don't. You. Dare." Blake repeated, emphasizing each word. "Lay a finger on her."
Vollu laughed. "Boy, you have got to be the most entertaining comedian in the world. What is it that you could possibly do to me?" Vollu pointed at the boy. "You're basically dead on your feet and you got that way with me simply messing with you. Face it. You're outmatched."
Energy began to arch around Blake and form into black and white lightning, and the pressure around him grew to an intense degree.
"How cute," Vollu mocked. "You truly think you have enough strength for that right now? Face it, boy. You're dead on your feet."
"You won't touch her," Blake grit his teeth as he pulled a card. "Ace of-"
Coughing began to rack the diviner's body as he fell to his knees, the energy around him vanishing. The card fell from his hand and blood began to spew from his mouth. The impact had made a rib puncture a lung.
"Blake!" Rin cried out. "Please stop! You don't have to save me. It's going to be okay. Just lie down and don't look. Everything will be fine."
Vollu rolled his eyes and sighed, clearly bored and annoyed by the situation. "It seems you weren't any fun, after all." Slowly, he turned back to Rin. "Now time to kill the girl you tried so hard to protect."
"Ace of Swords." He muttered, and instantly, a red and black sword appeared in his hand.
The man pulled his arm back to run Rin through, but right as his arm reached as far back as it was going to go, the magus threw a gem and jumped backwards.
Vollu stabbed the gem with his sword and chuckled. "What did you expect that to-"
He stopped as he observed Rin's face. She was smiling. His eyes went wide as he looked to the gem. It exploded, and Rin slid to shield Blake with her body.
Everything went cold, almost as if all the heat had been sucked away. Everything began to freeze over and soon, the area they found themselves in, had become an icy wasteland.
"Let me guess," Blake wheezed from underneath Rin. ""Absolute zero" gem?"
Rin was about to respond when she heard crackling and sizzling sounds from behind her. She grabbed an emerald as she spun to face the sound, and was immediately forced to use it. A powerful gem shield formed in front of her, and a continual blast of fire slammed into it.
All of the ice in the area instantly vaporized and the heat became almost unbearable. Rin began to sweat, or at least she thought she had. The heat evaporated her sweat right as it formed. This continued for nearly a minute until finally, it stopped.
Rin's legs shook as she fell to the ground. In those few moments, she had been completely dehydrated and felt the effects of heat stroke kicking in. That's when she heard the laughing.
"Mastered Arcana: The Sun." Vollu called in a fit of laughter. "You sure took me by surprise there, girl! I wasn't expecting an "absolute zero" gem."
The man took in the sight of the struggling Tohsaka girl and laughed even harder. "And look at you! You can hardly move. How utterly pathetic!"
Vollu formed his ace sword again. "Now hold still this time. I wouldn't want to miss and make this more painful."
All Rin could do was struggle on the ground as the sword came at her. She couldn't die yet. She had to bring Blake back. She had to save him. He needed her to protect him. She closed her eyes and begged for it to be so.
The sickening sound of blade and flesh echoed throughout the void. Rin felt a warmth begin to spread across her chest. Had she been stabbed? Why didn't she feel any pain?
As she opened her eyes, they widened at the sight she took in. Blake was on his hands and knees, hovering over her. Vollu's sword was protruding from his chest and blood was falling from the wound onto her. That must have been the warmth that she had felt. Blake's blood. He had shielded her with his body.
"W-why." She whispered more to herself than to him. "Why would you do that?" Tears began to fall as she began to yell. "Why would you do that!"
Blake smiled down at her. She was so beautiful. Those turquoise eyes. That dark hair. Even with tears in her eyes, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
"It's...because...I...love...you..." he forced out. Then he lowered his head and pressed his lips to hers. As his last breath left him, he fell to the side.
Rin's mind stopped working. Panic took her. Sadness overwhelmed her. Heart-break consumed her. She couldn't move. She couldn't speak. She couldn't focus on what would happen next. All she could do is sit there. Empty. Numb.
"Well that was unexpected." Vollu sighed. "I had hoped to make him watch as I killed you. This feels much less satisfying." The man placed his foot in Blake's back and pulled the sword from him. He then flicked the blade to release it of the blood that had coated it. The blood splattered onto Rin's face and ran down her cheeks with her tears. "But, these things happen. It can't be helped."
Rin broke. The girl let out a loud, continual cry of sorrow. Memories began to flood into her head. Memories of her and Blake sitting on a roof. Memories of her jealousy when he had gone on a date with Sage. Memories of her going to save him. Memories of him killing her. Memories of her forgiving and kissing him as she died. Memories of opening her eyes, realizing she was alive. And finally, the memory of him fading away. All of the memories poured into her and filled her head and heart with pain.
"I guess it's time to finish this." Vollu said in disappointment. "This turned out to be a real bore. So much for my triumphant moment."
With that, the man swung at the mess of a girl. There was no one left to save her. She was as good as-
A bright light exploded from where the girl was. Vollu swung through. He wouldn't let her escape, yet he made contact with nothing but air, and as the light dissipated, he found that the girl, along Blake's body, had disappeared.
Vollu grit his teeth in anger. He knew who had done this. That bitch always seemed to interfere!
"Damn you! Damn you to hell! INNTEGRAAAA!!!"
