I'm so sorry to have left you all this long for a new chapter, I've been crazy busy starting university and starting a new job, I'm so grateful for everyone who has followed this story and have been so patient. At the moment my country as deemed a 2 week lockdown due to Covid, so I'm hoping to get writing more chapters. As always, I do not own the hunger games characters and they belong to the glorious Suzanne Collins.
Katniss marvelled at the beauty of the woods that Peeta had taken her too. The luscious green of the leaves, the warmth of the sun radiated of her face and the pink incandescent cherry blossoms littered the ground, creating a soft blanket for them to lay on. Peeta had surprised her with a picnic, in a meadow far from district 12 but not like the one that she would spend her weekends in with her father. This meadow was a lot different. It was more for hiking, but you could tell Peeta has sussed out all the secrets spots and she couldn't help but wonder if he had taken anyone else here. Maybe it was her hormones, but she almost felt jealous at the thought of Peeta doing god knows what up here with some other girl that wasn't her. She couldn't help but think back to the girls he dated in secondary school, but the more she thought about it she couldn't recall seeing him with anyone in particular, the only girls he hung out with were Annie Cresta, Delly Cartweight and Madge Undersee, but Annie was dating Finnish, Delly was dating Thom and as for Madge she always assumed they had a more brother sister relationship, but maybe she was wrong. As if to stop her mind from wondering who the mystery girl could be, she looked over at Peeta and said
"Peeta, this place it's beautiful, how'd you find it?"
Peeta lay the blanket on the ground, he gently took Katniss's hand and helped her to sit down, even though she wasn't even remotely big enough to need help sitting down, Katniss knew it was just his way of showing fatherly affection for her and their baby
" Well when you have a mother like mine, sometimes leaving the house and exploring is my only sanctuary" he replied with a shrug of his shoulders, anyway let's not get into the right now, one pretty lady did say she'd allow me to woo her with my charm and brilliance and that's what I'm going to do" he said while bumping her shoulder with his as he lowered himself down beside her.
Her heart broke at his response, she looked over at the now faded bruise on his cheek and knew what he meant, but not wanting to cause tension on their date she dropped the subject and replied with a laugh, "Funny because that's not how I remember how that conversation went.
She couldn't help but admire the twinkle in his eye and how he gleamed in the glow of the sun, his freckles on the corners of his nose were small but when paying attention the tiny dots speckled across his gorgeous face were noticeable, and she couldn't help but wish their baby would have the same feature. She quickly noticed that she was fantasying about their baby inheriting Peeta's features again for the second time that morning and she couldn't believe how it made her heart skip a beat when she said in her head again 'their baby', she was falling for him and that scared her. Her heart leaped when he looked at her and she couldn't help but feel like the world was chewing her up in that moment. They stared at each other for what felt like days, when in fact it was mere minutes. They were broken from their gaze when Katniss's stomach began to rumble. "I see bump, is still a hungry little bugger, Peeta laughed as he handed Katniss a sandwich from the basket.
"You have no idea, it's like one minute I'm throwing up the next all she wants to do is eat, she really is putting me through my paces", Katniss replied as she began nibbling on the sandwich. Peeta quirked his eyebrow before replying "She?" Katniss shrugged her shoulders, "I mean we won't know until my scan next week with Dr Trinket or when the baby is born, but I just have a motherly intuition. When I think of our baby, I think of a little girl running in this meadow, eyes as blue as yours and she has your personality were she just radiates happiness" Peeta couldn't help but picture the image also, a smile appearing on his face. He leaned in and just when Katniss thought he was about to kiss her, he looked into her eyes, then to the loose bit of hair around her face, he wrapped it around her ear and replied "That sounds perfect, but I hope, our little girl has her mother's gorgeous hair, fearless personality and her love for the outdoors"
The hairs on Katniss's arm began to rise and she looked into his eyes and then leaned in and brushed her lips to his, the kiss started of gentle, sparking electricity throughout her body. Before she could pull away, Peeta, pulled her back and deepened the kiss. It wasn't until they needed to come back, up for air that the broke apart. "Wow" the both sighed and then they began to laugh. "How is it that I can knock you up and kiss you like that Everdeen, and yet I still don't know what your favourite colour is?" Peeta asked.
Katniss pondered his response, knowing it was true, she gave it a thought and replied "Green, what about you?" Peeta smirked as if knowing Katniss would say that because she loves nature, he then replied "Orange" Katniss grimaced "Orange really? that's an unusual colour, very bright" she laughed before Peeta responded, "Not bright orange, soft like the sunset" As she pictured the sunset she understood why Peeta would say that, the sunset in District 12 was always beautiful, especially when she went to the lake in the meadow she would go hunting in with her father. "When you say it like that, I guess orange could be a beautiful colour" she replied.
They finished off their picnic and then started to take a walk around Peeta's hiking trail. Hand in hand Peeta pointed out to Katniss parts of the trail that held memories for him " I swear Finnick thought he could really, climb all the way to the top of the tree and jump off into the lake below, we kept telling him it was way too high and the branches would tangle him and Finnick being Finnick done it anyway, causing him to fall out of the tree and get caught onto a branch by his boxers. Katniss laughed so hard tears began to form in her eyes "So, that's how the famous Finnick Odair broke his collar bone in secondary school then? "Yep, and because he was so embarrassed, he told everyone he got it from trying to do stunts on his motor bike" Peeta replied. Katniss always wondered what happened all her classmates after they left secondary school, she knew Peeta went off to District 2, but she never knew what happened all Peeta's friends, he was always so popular in school. "What is Finnick up to anyway? I know he managed to break out of here, like everyone else did in our year group" she asked almost disheartened at the thought that she couldn't go with any of them. Peeta studied Katniss's face, seeing the look of disappointment in her eyes, his heart dropped knowing all too well what she was thinking, "Finnick ended up going to District four on a swimming scholarship, he followed Annie and they are both moving into their new apartment in a couple of weeks, Finnick graduated in Business so he's opening up his own swimming centre and Annie, she got a job in the local Primary school in District four, primary one I think she's teaching, I haven't seen them in a while, maybe we could go there with little bump?" he replied, hoping Katniss would respond but hearing how everyone in her year group are doing well in their lives made her envious and she couldn't help but feel like she would never get the chance to do something with her life, as if sensing the change In her demeanour Peeta spoke again " Look Katniss, just because you're having this baby doesn't mean your life is on hold once again, I meant what I said the day we told your mother about the baby. I'm not letting you give up on your dream of going to university we can, and we will make this work, I promise you"
Katniss looked at Peeta, tears falling down her face and as she looked into his eyes, she knew he was telling the truth, he would do everything in his power to make sure she got to go to University. She wrapped her arms around his middle and buried her head into his neck, inhaling the sweet scent of cinnamon. Peeta wrapped his arms around her tightening his grip, almost reassuring her once again. "Thank you, Peeta" she whispered.
