However, she was not yet ready to admit that to herself or to anyone else. She had turned sharply to face Lucy, as the latter began speaking and now she walked towards her, her face flushed in anger.
"How dare you speak to me that way!" she shouted at Lucy. "No-one talks to me like that, no-one!"
"Well perhaps it's about time someone did," said Lucy in disgust. "I think it's unbelievable the way you treat people. It's not just me, it's everyone. You seem to think that you can say anything you like, and it doesn't matter how it makes people feel. You make me sick," she wound up, turning her back on Jo and beginning to walk away.
"Oh no you don't," yelled Jo, springing after her and catching at her arm. She was clutching it and was about to say something more, when the earth beneath her seemed to give way. With a wild scream, she vanished from view, followed by Lucy, who had been unable to free her arm.
With a shout, Anne, Gillian and Louise rushed up to the spot where Jo and Lucy had just been. Almost at their feet was an enormous, gaping hole, seemingly reaching to the bowels of the earth. Jo and Lucy were nowhere to be seen!
