As the day wore on, the team got no closer to finding out who kidnapped Mac. They all gathered in the conference room. Adam had watched all of the footage from the night before. "I did see a car come into the garage that didn't seem to belong there," he said. "But I couldn't tell anything about it. The tag was obscured someway."
Reagan was also there. "I cannot find anything else about Caldwell," he said. "I even talked to his wife again and she says he has not called her and she has not heard anything about money or anything else."
"He must be waiting," Lindsey said. "Or he hasn't even been paid yet."
"We don't have anything about the APB yet," Don added. "No one has seen the Avalanche."
"Trying to find those aliases is like hunting a needle in the haystack," Russ said. "There's a reason that they are called 'aliases'."
"So, we are no closer to finding Mac," Jo said. "There has to be something."
"Well, I know something," Reagan said as he stood up. "There is one person who knows who this woman is."
Jo dropped her pen on the table. "Yes, but we can't get him to talk."
"I want to interrogate him this time. I'll make him want to talk."
"And just how are you going to do that?"
"You'll see."
"Nothing illegal, I hope."
Reagan smiled. "I hardly ever cross the line."
Jo watched him walk out of the conference room. "Hardly ever?" She looked at the others. "Don, you go and watch that interrogation."
Don got up and went after Reagan. "What else can we do?" Russ asked. He leaned on the table. "If it comes down to it, you can let me interrogate him. I'm sure I can dig up something that would make him want to talk."
"If it comes to that. We have to find Mac."
Mac was pacing back and forth in the cage again. He knew it was almost time for them to bring his lunch. He was trying to think of a way to get out of the cage. He thought maybe that butler had the keys with him. If he could grab him, maybe he could get them from him. Soon, he heard the door opening. He sat down beside the bars and waited. The butler came in with his usual two trays. He fed the tiger first and then came over to Mac's cage. "Get away from the bars," he said.
"Why?" Mac asked. "You think I can overtake you from in here."
"Madam told me to be cautious around you."
Mac rolled his eyes. "Madam?"
Mac moved back slightly from the bars, but when the butler opened the small door for the tray, Mac made his move. He got over to the bars and grabbed the butler's arm and jerked it through the bars. "Where are the keys?" Mac demanded. "I'll break your arm!"
"I don't carry the keys!" the butler replied.
"You have to have something!" Mac reached and felt of the butler's pockets. He grabbed the keys that were in one of the pockets, but just as he was about to have them inside the cage, the butler tazed him.
Mac felt the electricity go through him, and it hurt! He could not help but turn the guy loose. He fell back into the hay feeling a little dazed but he still had the keys in his hand. He realized the butler was trying to get the keys back, but he had the presence of mind to move away from him. He stared at him. "You can't have them back," he said.
"Yes, I will get them back," the butler replied. He pushed Mac's tray on into the cage. "You better eat."
Mac glared at him. "You can't keep a person in a cage!" he said.
"Yes, we can."
Mac grimaced as his muscles ached from that tazer and his hand shook from the effort of holding the keys. "Those keys will do you no good," the butler said. "They only open the outside door. They will not get you out of this cage."
Mac frowned. "Then why do you want them back so badly?" he asked.
"We'll get them one way or the other."
The butler turned and left the room. Mac grimaced as he tried to stand up. His muscles shook from fatigue but he got over to the door and looked at the keys he had. None of them were a skeleton key but he thought maybe he could use one of them to pick that lock. He got to work as he wondered what they would do to get the keys back, but he figured they would just shoot him with a dart. Old locks like the one on the cage door were fairly simple to pick if one knew how to touch the right part.
Mac stuck the longest key on the ring into the door lock and began trying to figure out how to make the mechanism turn. He finally managed to get the end of the key into the notch and turned the lock. The door popped open, but just then he heard the room door opening as well. Mac shoved the door of the cage open and jumped out. He almost fell since his muscles were still not at their peak.
Sarah and the butler came in the door and she was carrying a dart gun. "Do you really think you can escape?" she asked.
"Do you think you and that skinny little butler can stop me?" Mac asked.
"Oh, I'm sure you are a formidable foe when you're at your full strength," Sarah said smugly. She gave the dart gun to the butler and then put her hair in a ponytail. "Well, now we'll see how you do against a judo expert."
Mac frowned. He knew how dangerous judo was, but he also knew how dangerous he could be as well. "Do you really want to do this?" he asked.
"Do you?"
Mac thought this woman had no fear of anything. He did not like the idea of fighting a woman, but he supposed he would have to if he wanted to get out of here. Sarah walked closer to him and got into a stance and just stared at him. Mac waited to see what she would do.
The silence in the room was the worst thing, Mac thought. They both just stared at each other, but Mac kept an eye on the butler to make sure he was not going to shoot him with that dart. "Are we just going to stand here staring at each other?" Sarah asked.
"I don't know," Mac replied. "Are we?"
Suddenly, Sarah lunged at Mac and he grabbed her arms and threw her to the floor, but she was back up before he could move. She kicked his leg from under him and he almost fell but he managed not to, however, she threw a quick punch to his ribs. Mac tried to ignore the explosion of pain in his side as she came at him with a kick. He grabbed her leg and threw her to the floor but she was not down long. Mac was beginning to think this was a bad idea but he could not give up. Sarah came at him with a wild yell and made him think she was going to punch him but as he grabbed her arm, she kneed him in the groin. Mac was angry now. He rammed the heel of his hand into her nose, knocking her backward, but she kicked him in the chest. He glared at her through his pain as he watched blood pour from her nose. He could see the fury in her eyes.
"You want some more?" Mac asked.
That seemed to make Sarah even angrier. She came at him, but instead of going toward his left like he thought she would, she went to the right. However, Mac knew she was tricky. He brought his elbow down into her back, knocking her to the floor, but just at that moment, Mac was wide open and had forgotten the butler until he felt the dart hit his leg. He looked down to see the tiny red dart sticking out of his leg. He glared at the butler. "You'll be sorry for this," Mac said as he felt the drug hit his brain. He fell to his knees and looked at Sarah.
"Good night," Sarah said angrily as she punched him in the nose.
Mac barely felt the punch because the drug was taking him over already. He fell to the floor and stared at the ceiling. Sarah leaned over him. "You're a formidable foe," she said.
Mac swallowed hard. "You won't get away with this," he said as he fell asleep.
Reagan walked into the interrogation room where Caldwell was already waiting. "I was beginning to wonder how long I was going to have to sit in here," Caldwell said.
"Aw, are you uncomfortable?" Reagan asked. "Frankly, I don't care a thing about your comfort!" He dropped the file on the table and sat down making as much noise as possible. "So!" he said loudly. "You think you're going to keep from telling us who the woman is who hired you."
"I told you, I'm not telling that," Caldwell said.
"Oh, I think you will." Reagan opened the folder he had on the table and took out a picture of Mac. "You see that guy? That is Detective Mac Taylor."
"So? He tried to get me to tell too, and I'm not going to."
"Well, he's the head of the crime lab around here, and he's very valuable to the police department."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"Your little secret has kidnapped him," Reagan said as he leaned on the table. "You know what's going to happen to you if she kills him?"
Caldwell swallowed hard. "I didn't have anything to do with that," he said.
"Oh yes you did. You won't tell us who she is and now, you've made it possible for her to kidnap him and it's all because of this case, so you are an accessory. There won't be any bargains."
"I can't tell you."
"Why not! You can tell us her name! I don't care who she is!"
"She would have me killed in jail anyway!"
"Well, you're going to get the death penalty if she kills Mac Taylor! Tell me who she is!" Reagan dropped a picture of the woman from the garage on the table. "That's all we have of her. You know who she is, now tell us!"
Caldwell stared at the picture. "Why not?" he asked. "My life is ruined anyway. She'll never pay me. She just wanted that guy dead."
"Who is she?"
"Her name is Sarah. That's all I know. She is a rich woman who likes to go hunting. She hunts big game and keeps their bodies as trophies. I don't know where she lives. Somehow she met up with John Curtis and he attacked her when they were alone. She knew me because I had worked for the senator before."
"And you agreed to kill somebody for her?"
"I was desperate! And besides, he was a rapist."
"He was still a human being and you mutilated him."
"Can I go back to my cell?"
"Sure. You're going to live in a cage for a long time!"
Reagan got his stuff and left the interrogation room. Don was waiting outside. "Hey, that was pretty good," Don remarked.
"Well, I guess it was a step in the right direction," Reagan replied. "Now, if we can find a rich woman named Sarah who likes to hunt, we'll be on the right track."
Mac was barely awake as he knew he was being moved again. He did not know where he was being taken but he knew they were strapping him into a seat. Sarah lifted his chin up and looked at him. "It won't be long now," she said. "You'll be in your new home." She leaned the seat back a little and put a blanket over him.
Mac tried to look around him but he could not get his brain to comprehend what his eyes were seeing. He looked to his left at what looked like a window…a small window. He thought he must be on a plane but he could not move even to scratch his nose which seemed to be itching like crazy. He turned his head the other way and saw Sarah sitting in a seat across from him. She looked at him with a frown. He could see that her nose was swollen and her eyes looked a little black. "I'm sure you will feel some pain when you wake up," she said.
Soon, Mac heard the roar of the engines on the jet plane as they started up and then taxied down the runway. He thought that should be upsetting but he was too groggy to care…
"Sarah," Jo said. "Maybe that's not a very common name among the filthy rich here."
"That's all he knew," Reagan said. "Or at least that was all he wanted to tell. I think he might have some idea of who she really is."
"Well, at least we got that much. Let's get Adam on the hunt and maybe he can dig up something that will help us locate her."
Jo and Reagan went into the computer lab. "Adam, I want you to search for stories or anything you can find about people who hunt exotic animals, rich people that is and I want you to see if there are any named 'Sarah'. That's the only name we have to go on."
"I'll get busy," Adam said.
"Just do the best you can. We have to find something that will lead us to Mac."
By that evening, they were no closer to finding anything but Adam was still looking, and so was everyone else. They were searching through travel agencies to find out anyone who went on hunting excursions or safaris. There were several who went on these trips. Jo was surprised at how many there were. "I didn't realize there were this many people who liked to hunt for sport like this," she remarked.
"You would be surprised," Russ said. "It's unnerving what all goes on in the world, because it is not just animals that people hunt."
"Well, right now, we're looking for a man hunter and she has Mac."
"She could be anywhere. She may not even be in New York now. These people usually have more than one residence and they can move from place to place whenever they get ready."
"I just hope we can locate her and Mac before it's too late. What could she be doing to him?"
"Let's hope she's just holding him captive."
