Chapter 10: Father's Last Words

After accepting Vergil's proposal and kissed to breathlessness, Dante helped the elder with the runes and wards. They weren't taking any chances. Vergil nodded with approval as he tested each one. They were strong and able to withstand a great deal. Let them try to get at us. Vergil thought with a tightened jaw. Father should've done this first. But I suppose times were different then. He had many demons to deal with, Mundus included. Now,the biggest threats are gone. Dante made sure of that, as did Nero and the women. I even took down a few and I was a threat.

They walked to Sparda's former study, which Vergil claimed for his own. Dante looked around at the marvel. There were hints of purple, but the majority was royal blue black. The surviving books were carefully preserved on the topmost shelf. Dante tilted his head and lightly bit his lip. There's one missing…

"Babe, where is Father's journal?" Dante asked. Vergil looked up from his reading, eyebrows raised as he realized that their father's journal, the center most of the collection, was indeed missing!

"How did that happen?" Vergil asked aloud as he reviewed the list. Their father's journal was not listed! "It's not listed at all!" Dante thought for a moment. If it's not here…wait a minute!

"Babe, do you remember how Father's journal looked?"

"Yes, it was a tome like book, purplish black, with gold trim and had an indentation where the Perfect amulet would go in the heart of the book." Dante blinked and gasped as he recognized the description.

"It's in my office."

Nico and the ladies looked up as the door opened and grinned when they saw the couple. Trish hugged Dante and bowed her head to Vergil in respect.

"What happened? Is everything all right?" Dante went to his bookshelves and searched.

"We had to inspect our new home." Vergil answered. "Soon, by the end of the week in fact, all that's in here will be moved out and into our home as well."

"Ah ha!" Dante called out as he carefully climbed down the ladder. Vergil helped him down and that's when Trish saw the ring on Dante's finger.

"Congratulations!" She said, genuinely happy for the couple. Dante smiled.

"Thank you." He said kindly as he placed the tome down. Vergil looked over the book, then fingered the indentation.

"I don't remember what happened to my half of the amulet." He said in regret. Dante smiled.

"I have it. When we battled on Mallet Island for the last time, you dropped it. When both halves joined, it unlocked the Force Edge's true form, the Sparda sword and i was able to continue on into the Underworld and kick Mundus' ass."

"And where is the Perfect Amulet now My Heart?"

"I think I absorbed it when I absorbed the Sparda and Rebellion." Vergil's eyebrows rose, almost disappearing into his hairline.

"My Heart, both swords?!"

"Babe, Urizen was no cake walk." Dante said. Vergil chuckled and held him. "Blasted me out of there and knocked me into a month long coma."

"Sorry," Vergil said sheepishly. "I wasn't in my right mind."

"I know Babe." Dante said as he kissed the elder. "But how do we open this now?"

"Perhaps you can summon the amulet?"

"You mean, as I summon up my Devil Arm?"

"Exactly." Vergil said with a nod. Dante blinked and held out a hand but waited. Soon the Perfect Amulet was in his hand!

"Oh wow! I did it!" He said with a grin and tried to hand the amulet over to Vergil who shook his head.

"The honor is yours, My Heart." With a deep breath Dante placed the Perfect Amulet into the book. It was a perfect fit. Suddenly the book opened! They gasped and leaned in.

Everything I was ever taught, proved to be an illusion. Mundus' treachery is beyond apprehension as he bit into the Quiloph fruit, crowning himself King and overthrowing our Emperor. I could not sit idly by as the screams of countless lives reach my ears. I will not and can not serve such a tyrant. He will fall, even if it means my end.

"It's when Father woke to justice." Dante said. Vergil nodded and after the couple got comfortable, they each held an end of the book and continued to read.

I know that others will not stand with me and it will forever brandish me a traitor, but I couldn't give a flying fuck. This cannot continue. I plan to siege the Throne Room and end it all.

"Wow, he cursed!" Dante laughed. Vergil chuckled.

The last thing I remember is sealing Mundus in the Underworld along with my demonic half. I used Yamato to split myself. It wasn't easy, but I managed. My wounds were great but not fatal. My travels brought me to Fortuna where the residents worshipped me and named me Lord. I am not one to put on airs, but I accept humbly, and I will oversee that all remain safe.

"By doing, that, Father stretched himself thin." Vergil said. Dante nodded sadly, resting his head on Vergil's shoulder. Vergil hugged and kissed the Hunter before they read on.

It has been almost sixty years since I accepted the Lordship and found the love of my life. She is a ball of fire and is constantly keeping me on my toes. Even when she threatens to shoot me! When her eyes shine with her inner fire and her face shows emotions, she is enchanting. But I notice that at times, she could also be a shy as a swan. Graceful yet silent, a quiet beauty.

The couple laughed at this. Their mother was feisty but she always kept it classy. In a way, they both had some of her traits, although it was more pronounced in Dante. Sparda's traits were more so in Vergil.

Eva came to me with the news of her pregnancy and I came close to spilling my ink! I also very nearly fell out of my seat when she said we were having twins. I was ecstatic, I still am. Twin devils is a rarity. It also signifies a mated pair has come to be. I can see this pairing may be a bit turbulent but, in the end, they will be strong and last forever. Any children, be it biological by one or both, will see the more submissive of the two as Mother. I have my suspicions that they'll both be boys.

"Hm, do either of us have the power of seeing the future?" Dante asked. Vergil knew he didn't. He wasn't sure on Dante though.

"I don't. Do you My Heart?"

"Hell no, why do you think I don't gamble. I suck at it, always losing."

"That's a sensible reason to not gamble." Vergil said with a chuckle. Dante pulled a face, causing the elder to laugh a bit harder.

As I suspected, twin boys! I am over the moon. I have the perfect names: Vergil and Dante. I so adore the Divine Comedy. The Guide and the Warrior they'll be. They will need each other.

"Ah, so you were supposed to guide me!" Dante said with a grin. "But it seems I did your job."

"We guided each other My Heart. Although misguided and clouded in judgment I have been."

"Now that you mention it, you're right. You guided me to my Trigger and calling."

"And you guided me when I was lost." Vergil said. "And both you and Nero knocked me back into place."

"Happy to do it." Dante grinned. Vergil smirked and both continued to read.

The boys are growing by leaps and bounds, both proving to be a handful. Their powers started showing early and I can see how uneasy Eva gets at first. I sat her down and explained, reassuring her that we would never hurt her. Vergil is showing signs of a more demonic nature, while Dante is showing more human. They will need to balance the two. If only I can get Dante to focus…

"He wanted us to balance each other out." Vergil explained. "For you, he wanted me to guide you through our demonic heritage for I have a better understanding of it. For me, he wanted you to guide me through our human heritage."

"Nero had it balanced out without us. He knocked sense into both of us."

"True, but this time, he will have us." Vergil said as he held Dante's hand in his own.

I woke in a sweat, the cold grips of my latest vision still with me. I foresaw my Eva's death, Vergil's death and trigger and Dante, alone and hidden away…

"My Heart I am so sorry I didn't search…."

"Babe, we're here now." The Hunter whispered.

"True and I'm never letting go of my family, ever again." Vergil whispered. Dante smiled and hugged the elder tight. Vergil lifted his face gently and they kissed tenderly, their father's journal on their laps.

"Babe, look." Dante gasped as he pointed. Vergil looked down and blinked.

My sons, I know that after today, you will be on your own and it breaks my heart a thousand times over. I am so sorry for all that will come to pass. I know that despite all, that you will prevail. And give our grandchildren all our love. We are proud of you both, even though one of you ate the fruit! All Hail the King eh? I'm actually impressed and a bit furious but it's best a Sparda is on the throne! Up yours Mundus!

And this, the couple laughed hysterically. They both pictured their father flipping Mundus the bird. But Dante re read the last bit and blinked. Grand…children? As in plural? He blushed. He would not mind having more than one but for now, they were prepared for only one.

"Babe, I think Father is hinting we'll have more children." Dante said as he carefully closed the book and set it down on the table, removing the Perfect Amulet, closing it immediately. He replaced the gold half around Vergil's neck and Vergil replaced the silver half around the Hunter's.

"Hm, that is intriguing…"

"You wouldn't mind?" Dante asked with a shy blush. The elder smiled and pulled the Hunter close.

"Not at all." He whispered before kissing the red clad devil. Dante moaned as the elder deepened the kiss and laid him down on his back on the couch, settling on top of him. They began to moan and pant as the kiss became wilder. As soon as Vergil was about to bite down on Dante's neck, the door opened, and three pairs of eyes widened.

"Holy shit!"

"Oh my…."

"Bom chika wow wow!" Nico teased. Vergil lifted himself up with his arms and blinked.

"Every time she says that I feel dirty."

"Uh, we're not doing anything." Dante said with his arms and legs around the elder. The women grinned.

"Place your bets girls." Nico said. "I'll bet Nero will be here this upcomin' Spring!"

"I say this winter!" Lady said.

"I say sooner than that." Trish said. "They're approaching time." Vergil growled softly, his tail swaying slowly back and forth. Dante leaned up and lightly nibbled on the elder's neck, which caused him to groan and his tail to thump on the floor. Trish smirked. "Looks like even sooner."

"Babe, can we go home?"

"Of course, we can My Heart." The elder said as he felt Dante's arms and legs release him. "Let's grab Father's journal though and take it home as well." Dante nodded and went to grab the book, putting it away into a satchel and putting it on. Vergil nodded and looked at the women.

"Trish don't pull any disappearing acts. I will call upon you to discuss an important matter later."

"Of course." The She-Devil said respectfully. "I'll make sure I remain here at the office."

"Wise choice." Vergil said, giving the Hunter a warm smile. "Are you ready to go My Heart?'

"Yes, I'm ready now." Dante said softly. Vergil unsheathed Yamato and slashed a portal. Dante threw a wave at the women and allowed the elder to escort him home. The ladies waited for the portal to completely close before talking again.

"I'll bet within three weeks." Trish said finally. "Any longer, I will be stunned."

"True that sister." Nico said. "They were about to get hot an heavy…."

"Have to admit, it was kind of hot." Lady said. The ladies all grinned and agreed. "Well, let's prep for a baby shower."
