Day 26 - From Domina Temporis: Holmes's first case outside of Britain

Holmes was quiet, deep in thought as we left in the carriage. The sky was gray and overcast, fitting both our moods, despite the mostly successful resolution of the case the night before. But still, it felt as if something was missing, a prickly icy feeling at the back of my mind, and I blurted out, "Holmes, do you really believe that Jack Napier was the assassin all along?"

Holmes leaned back, a wry smile on his face. "Ah, Watson, if you have to ask that question, I am sure you already know the answer."

Holmes was right. It had been almost too easy to catch the madman dressed as the assassin when he struck again. There had been only bloodlust, and none of the cold calculation in the previous murders. He had laughed wildly when questioned about motives.

"This has been my first case outside Britain that hasn't been resolved well enough for my liking," Holmes mused. "Though I suppose the original perpetrators of the crime will now lay low, to give the crime the illusion of being solved. It may be years before there is an opportunity to catch them in the act again."

"Fortunate that you have a protégé living here," I remarked.

"Yes," Holmes agreed, "when the killers do re-emerge, they will have to deal with Bruce."
