Edward and I compromise, discussing the plan with Damon and a very awkward discussion with Charlie.

Elena's POV: (Opening thoughts)

Edward has just told me he does not want me at the battle. But if he thinks he's winning without a fight then he is sadly mistaken. I cannot sit out and possibly find out he died protecting me.

Edward and I head out of the house but we are in the middle of a disagreement.

"I'm not just gonna hide while you're out taking all the risks for me," I tell him. "And Bella agrees. She has Jake to think about and I have you."

But my boyfriend is stubborn. "If it's Victoria involved, I need to keep you as far away from the fight as possible."

"Jasper said that we could be of help," I remind him of what his adopter brother said.

"We won't need your help," he informs me. "With the wolves in this it's an easy win. The rest of us aren't gonna have enough to do."

"Okay," I begin not understanding his logic. "Either its so dangerous that I have to hide. Or so easy that you're gonna be sidelined. Which is it?"

He smiles. "It's dangerous for you, easy for us!"

I'm gonna regret playing this card I know it.

"Well I think it's dangerous for us to be apart," I point out to him and he seems a little upset by this. "How many times do we have to prove that? I'll be worried, you'll be worried. And we'll both be more vulnerable."

He looks down as he considers this. "Okay, you're right."

"So, I'm coming with you?" I ask hoping for the right answer.

"No we both stay away together and with Bella so Victoria and the others don't use her to get to you," he says and I know Bella will still hate this idea as much as me.

I shake my head. "I can't ask you to choose between me and Bella and your own family."

"The only way I can protect you is to be with you," he tells me and in one way I know he is right and I love him even more for it.

Later on Jasper, Edward and I meet up with Damon to discuss the plan to get me to a secure area where we will be meeting up with Jake and Bella.

"You're not fighting?" He says as he approaches the three of us mocking Edward. "Did you pull a muscle or something?"

I glare at him a little. "He's doing for me okay... and to watch Bella while Jake is fighting."

"Whatever!" He says rolling his eyes. "Just tell me the plan."

Jasper begins to speak first.

"This field will give us an advantage in battle," he tells him and we all look around at the wide field. "We need to lure the newborns with Elena's scent. But it needs to end here and only be hers as if there's too many scents they may not come. That's why Bella will be going a different way with your pack member Jacob."

"Edward and I are meeting Jake and Bella at a camp site," I explain to Damon what Bella and I had discussed earlier. "Even if he carries me they'll still pick up on our scent."

"Your stench however is revolting," Edward points out.

"Dude you really don't want to start comparing stinks," Damon says to him.

"What he means," I say ending the argument before it starts. "Is your scent will mask mine, if you carry me."

"Done," Damon agrees.

Edward shakes his head. "This is not a good idea."

"Edward," Jasper tries to reason with his brother but he stares at Damon as he says his next line. "They won't wanna get anywhere near his... odour."

"Okay let's just try it," I say heading towards Damon.

I stand near him and he places one hand under my knees and the other under my back, before picking me up.

"Eau de wolf coming up," Damon says as he prepares to take off.

"Run!" Edward says and I glance back at him as Damon begins to run off.

Now it's just me and Damon... for the first time since he kissed me... maybe Edward is right and this wasn't a good idea.

When we are alone in the woods Damon begins to slow down. After a few seconds of awkward silence he speaks.

"So you gonna ask me to sit out of the fight as well?" He asks and I stare at his face. "Or don't you care about my safety?"

I point out the obvious. "Of course I care. But you'd say no."

"I won't have a choice anyways," Damon tells me but his next words confuse me. "Since I and then Jake let Sam be Alpha male... I got to live with the shots he calls."

"Since you and Jake let Sam be Alpha?" I ask.

"When I first turned I tried everything to get out of it," he tells me gently. "I wanted to go back to you. When Sam came along he stepped up and helped further wolves. I offered him the spot but he said he never wanted to be in the pack... let alone be it's leader."

"Wow!" I say avoiding the mention of coming back to me. "Chief Damon and when not you Chief Jacob."

"Both of us opted out," he says and then he loses his smile a little. "But every choice has its consequences. Some more than others."

"Don't start," I say knowing he is talking about the choice I am making. "Everybody makes choices and you, Bella and Jake are going to have to accept mine."

"But you can love more than one person at a time," he points out to me and I glance at him. "I've seen it. With Sam, Emily and Leah."

"Well I'm not a wolf," I state the obvious again. "I can't imprint."

"It has nothing to do with imprinting," he says as I motion with my hands and he stops to look down at me. " It has to do with feeling something for somebody. And I know you still feel something for me. I can sense I still make you feel the way I did physically years ago. I still make you nervous."

He stares at me for a second but this is not like it was before he became a werewolf. "D'..."

He still sees sense thank god for me. Things have changed since then.

"Don't worry," he says smiling. "I promised I wouldn't kiss you again till you asked."

I smirk and shake my head. "Your gonna be keeping that promise for a while chief."

He smiles back as we finally begin to move again.

Bella and I head back together after we met up at the camping site. When we pull up I am shocked to see Charlie and Alice coming out together.

"What's...Um... Alice?" I nod at her guess of the pixie's name. "What's Alice doing here?"

I shrug not so sure myself. I can't explain everything all the Cullen's do. Also why would she want to talk to Charlie.

"By the way I am staying at Jake's tonight," she tells me and I nod. "And that's where Charlie thinks I am for the weekend or at least he will."

I smirk wondering how he'll react to that.

As we get out and approach the two Alice says something before Charlie speaks. "Okay Alice, don't be a stranger."

"Okay," Alice agrees before approaching the two of us. "Well your two's alibi for the battle has been arranged. Bella your plan was not going to go down well with him."

Bella blushes as she imagines Alice seeing her plan. "Thanks for the warning. But really what's the alibi?"

I also look at her curious.

"I told your father that our whole family is going camping this weekend," she tells us. "So you two and I are having a sleepover at my house. So while you Bella are with Jake who's father I believe knows not to tell Charlie, he thinks you are with us at mine."

"Thanks," Bella nods and smiles at Alice, maybe to her she's not the worst of the Cullen's. "I'm gonna head inn and start packing."

I nod and she takes off and Bella looUm...ks happy that Bella was nice to her.

"Charlie's going fishing this weekend anyway," she says,

" 'Charlie'," I repeat in shock. "You guys are on first name basis now."

"Me, he likes," she informs me with a smile before she thinks of something she needs to tell me. "Actually, you and Edward will have the house to yourselves tonight."

I look down. Me, Edward... no one else. Oh god.

"Like alone?" I ask for confirmation.

"We're all going hunting," she chuckles a little at my expression. "Powering up for the battle? Your welcome!"

She heads off. Maybe now's the time to discuss what I want to with Edward. Or maybe I chicken out and neither of us get what we want.

*Elena Swan in Eclipse*

I head inside to where Charlie is doing himself some food and Bella must still be upstairs.

"Hey," Charlie says as I come towards the kitchen. "You want a sandwich? Bella's having food later."

"No, I'm good," I tell him. I'm too nervous about tonight to eat.

"Well the sister, I like," he says referring to Alice.

"Alice," I nod glad he and her are getting along as I begin to do the pots and ponder whether it's a good idea to discuss with him what I want to. "Yeah. She's great," I decide to throw caution to the winds and I turn so my back is against the sink. "Hey dad, I was wondering... why didn't you get remarried after mum?"

He rolls his eyes but seems a little taken back at my question. But at least he answers. "Uh... I don't know. Um... I don't know. Guess I still haven't met the right gal," he uncomfortably laughs. "Why?"

Okay this is where this conversation becomes a little uncomfortable even for me.

"I don't know," I tell him avoiding what I really want to say. "I thought you just... maybe gave up on the whole institution of it. Of marriage. But do you think there's any value in it?"

He places the plate down in the sink that he had in his hand and turns to me to answer seriously.

"Yeah," he says and that does make me feel better. "Yeah, marriage has value. When you're older, much older. Like your mother... seemed to work out fine for her the second time round. Later in life."

Problem is I don't plan on getting any older. Physically anyway.

"Yeah I guess," I agree to him quietly. Cannot tell him what I really think.

He now seems to be choosing his next words wisely. "I mean... you definitely don't want to have to get married because you weren't, um, careful."

I am now confused... careful.

"What?" I ask looking away.

"You know what I'm talking about," he tells me. I really don't. "There's... things you need to think about if you're gonna be physically- intimate-"

I cut him off. Oh we are not having this conversation.

"Okay-" I say no longer leaning against the sink and trying to stop him. "Don't have.. the talk."

He raises his hands in surrender. "It's just as embarrassing for me as it is for you."

"I doubt that," I tell him. This couldn't be more awkward. "And don't both because mum beat you to it for both Bella and I like ten years ago!"

"You didn't have a boyfriend ten years ago," he points out.

"I'm sure things work the same way," I counter. How much can change in 10 years?

He smiles a little as he turns around and begins to do the pots.

"All right, so..." he begins still sounding awkward and I know the subject is not over. "You guys are taking precautions and-"

I cut him off again. "Okay dad. Please just don't worry about that. Edward is... old school."

"Old school, great," he repeats sounding confused. "What's that? Like code for something?"

"Oh my god dad..." I say knowing their is one way I can get him to drop this subject. I give him the thubs up as I say the next line. "I'm a virgin!"

He stammers but it has the desired effect. "Okay good! Glad we covered that!"

I run up the stairs but yell back to him. "ME TOO!"

As I get up the stairs my twin is stood there holding her sides with laughter. I nudge her as I pass.

"That was one way to get him to drop the subject sis!" She says as she tries to catch her breath. "I'll remember that one..."

I glare as I close my bedroom door to pack my things for the weekend and think about the conversation I just had with Charlie.

Would it be so bad... getting married.

QUEENC2020:

This will always be my favourite scene between Charlie and Bella.
