sorry it took so kong to update i've had a busy schedule lately. i should be updating more frequently going forward.
Monday hit and Jay was about to leave early to pick Hailey up but got a call from Hailey.
"Hey hails I'm just about to leave" He spoke
"Actually I was phoning to tell you I'm not coming in today" Hailey said and Jay knew what that meant.
"Hailey" Jay started but Hailey interrupted
"It's just easier for me if I don't come in today" Hailey explained and Jay knew what she meant.
"Okay but call me if you need anything" He told her and she said okay as Jay reluctantly hung up the phone and made his way to school.
Hank drove through the town with Trudy when her phone rang. Trudy's face was ridden with worry.
"Hank we need to go to Hailey's house now" she said urgently and Voight started driving to the place her was now very familiar with.
"Why what's wrong" he asked
"Her mom just phoned the police, she said things there have got 'out of control' and she needed help, Hank her mother would never ever call the police unless she absolutely had to" Trudy said making Hank drive faster. When they arrived they jumped out the car with guns loaded and up. They heard screaming and shouting coming from inside and knocked on the door, the second the male answered it Hank had him on the ground.
"Oh shit" Trudy said seeing Hailey's mother on the floor frantically trying to wake up and unconscious Hailey.
"Please help she's not breathing" her mother pleaded hysterically.
Trudy assessed the situation, Hailey had blood seeping from her torso and lay unconscious with tons of bruising covering her body, cuts and scrapes everywhere. Patrol arrived and removed Hailey's father who was screaming at them and attempting to get free whilst Trudy started CPR and Hank urgently called for an ambulance. Hank rushed over to Hailey trying to stop the bleeding whilst Trudy continued chest compressions.
The officers came to arrest her mother who tried to fight them.
"Look, you have to go with the officers" Hank told her kindly "but I promise you we will take care of Hailey" he said
"You know her name" Her mother asked confused
"Yes she goes to schools with my son and daughter and she's dating my son" he said
"Your Jays dad" she said shocked and he nodded his head. After hearing that her mother complied and went with the officers. Trudy had been going with CPR for a while now and she locked eyes with Hank, they both knew this wasn't good and just before Trudy was going to give up they saw Hailey's chest rise up and her start breathing. They both sighed in relief and tried to get her to wake up, just then the ambulance rushed in.
"You should go with her" Trudy said
"No you go, I'm going to get Jay, I don't want him hearing this from someone else and you know how news spreads" He said and Trudy nodded climbing in the back of the ambulance as it sped away.
Hank dreading facing Jay as he drove to the school. He didn't want Jay to blame himself which he knew he would do.
Jay was sitting in his English class when the speaker went off asking him to make his way to reception, he locked eyes with Erin in confusion before standing up and walking to the front desk to see Hank standing there, his head started racing and his heart dated pounding as he saw the blood on the bottom left hand side of Hank's jacket.
"Dad, what are you doing here" he asked in confusion.
"Somethings happened come" Hanks said leading a very confused Jay out to the car.
"Tell me what's happened" Jay demanded as they closed the car doors.
"Jay listen" he said calmly. "Somethings happened to Hailey" he said and Jays heart started pounding and he felt like the room was closing in.
"W.. what" he said his voice breaking.
"We got a call today, her mother phoned the police pleading for help, when we arrived Hailey was unconscious and severely injured, she had a server injury to her torso and she wasn't breathing. Trudy managed to revive her and the ambulance has arrived and brought her through to the hospital but it's very touch and go" Hank said and he saw Jays hands shaking slightly.
"Did you, did you get him" Jay asked and Hank knew he was asking about Hailey's father.
Yea we got him, he's not going to lay a hand on Hailey ever again" Hank assured him
"But what's going to happen to her now" Jay asked worriedly.
"Well her mother will be out on the stand and if she isn't charged and will pleads innocent then they'll see if she's considered fit to take care of Hailey and if she is then Hailey can go back to living with her mom but whilst that's happening I told the courts that hailey will be staying with us" he told Jay
"Seriously" Jay said looking a little bit happier.
"Yep she's stuck with us for a while" Hank replied.
"Come let's go to the hospital and see if there's any updates" Hank said.
Jay didn't say anything on the ride over until they arrived at the hospital.
"Should we phone her brother" he asked Hank
"Let's see first what information we can find out and then we'll get in contact" Hank said and they walked to the entrance of the hospital Jay trying to convince himself that she'll be okay.
When they walked through the doors hey saw Trudy sitting in the waiting room.
"How is she" Hank asked
"They took her into surgery but things weren't looking great in the ambulance" Trudy said truthfully.
They sat there for hours before someone came out and called there name.
"Are you here for Hailey Upton" he asked and they nodded
"Are any of you her immediate family" the man asked and suddenly a voice spoke up
"That depends on what your definition of family is". All of a sudden a younger ginger haired man walked up.
"Will, is she okay" Jay asked his older brother.
Will was Jays older brother and was starting out working at the Chicago med hospital. He had only met Hailey a handful of times seeing he didn't live at home but had grown to like the girl and the way she made Jay smile. The other doctor let Will take over and he left.
"How much do you guys know" Will asked and they said nothing.
"When Hailey came in we rushed her in for scans, we found that the bleeding coming from her torso resembled that of a stab wound and we believe Hailey was stabbed by a kitchen knife as we can tell the object had a ridged edge, we also found that her ribs have been severely broken and the reason she stopped breathing was caused by the punctuated lung she suffered due to the broke ribs. We also found a large amount of bruising to her left leg and it seems as though the shin bone has been badly bruised. We operated on her lung and torso but she coded twice on the table and we struggled to get her back so unfortunately we couldn't continue the surgery meaning tomorrow if she makes it through the night she'll have to go back in so we can operate on her ribs and put in metal plates to realign her rib cage and stop and further risk of injury to her lung. It's going to be a rough night and she's not out of the woods yet, we've put her in an induced coma for the night to allow her body to fully rest so we can hopefully operate on her again tomorrow but I think it would be best to contact anyone like her brother tonight so he can be here tomorrow when she wakes" Will said and allowed them to take in the information
"Is she going to be okay" Jay asked
"We're going to do everything we can but it's up to her at the moment to fight, we've done all we can for the moment but don't worry Hailey's tough" Will assured his younger brother.
"There was one thing I need to say" Will said sitting down on the waiting room seat as everyone followed suit.
"When we did scans on Hailey we found she has an extreme amount of broken bones and injuries that haven't healed properly" Will said taking a moment "we normally only see this in patients who have either been extremely abused at home or victims of kidnappings, this means the abuse at home must be extremely severe to amount to the intense injuries I see Hailey has, I also noticed her hospital report was flagged red meaning a potential abuse case and she's been admitted to hospital 21 times with 'suspicious injuries' that match those who have been abused over her lifetime, the abuse she's suffered at home is some of the worst I've seen in a long time" Will said and they couldn't believe it was that bad. "Truthfully I would say that some of her broken bones that haven't healed properly should be fixed back into place before she's older and her bones stop growing because there are a lot of them but that's something that will have to happen in the future because her body can't take that now." Will said
"It's my fault" Jay said " I shouldn't of sat back and allowed her to be abused, she told me months ago I could have helped her" Jay broke hearing what Hailey had been through
"Hey, non of us knew how bad things were not even myself and I've been to Hailey's house on numerous occasions, Hank and I were police it was our Job to help Hailey and we let her down, you did right by her your stuck by her and helped her. Don't blame yourself for this Hailey needs someone who's sticks by her not someone who blames themselves when something goes wrong" platt told Jay.
"I didn't realise it was so bad" Jay said sadly
"Non of us did" Hank told him putting a hand on his younger sons shoulder.
"Can we see her" Jay asked Will.
"Yes but only two at a time" Will said and Trudy told them to go ahead and she was going to phone Danny.
When she dialled his number she was filled with dread. She felt bad for Danny too because she knew he would hate himself for leaving.
"Hello" Danny said
"Hi Danny it's Trudy Platt" she answered
"Trudy long time no see" he joked but Trudy could here his nervous voice
"Danny I have some news" she said
"What happened" he said with fear in his voice
"I'm at the hospital, there's been an accident" she told him
"It wasn't an accident Trudy, what did he do to her" he said his voice laced with anger for his father
"You mom called the police asking for help. Your father was drunk and attacked Hailey, he took it too far this time Danny" she told him and his heart sank
"Is she okay" he asked
"She was stabbed, her lung was punctured her ribs completely broken and her heart stopped beating and she stopped breathing three times. She's been placed in an induced coma so she can attempt to rest before they bring her in for another surgery tomorrow but the doctor suggested we call any of her family so that if she wakes up tomorrow after her surgery you can be there" Danny's heart was beating fast hearing Hailey's injuries and couldn't help but notice platt's use of words saying 'if Hailey wakes' he knew it was bad otherwise platt wouldn't of called.
He said he would be on the next plane to Chicago.
He rushed over to his boss in the New York Times and knocked on her office door.
"Danny come in" she said kindly
"Hello Ms Sanders I need to go home to Chicago urgently and I was wondering if I could have this week off please" he said trying to sound professional.
"Danny I can't do that you have to finish covering the story, it's being released in two weeks and it's not done" she said to him
"Please, my little sisters in the hospital and it isn't looking good besides I can work remotely from Chicago and I promise I will have the story done on time and sent to you by the end of the week" Danny negotiated and she could see how desperate he was and how upset he looked.
"Very well, but no later than Sunday" she said and Danny thanked her and got up to walk out
"Oh and Danny, I hope your sisters okay" She said and Danny thanked her before leaving and booking his flight home to Chicago.
Jay went into the hospital room Hailey was put in and his heart broke seeing her hooked up to all the monitors wires everywhere. She looked so tiny in the bed and so pale it almost didn't even look like her. Hank also couldn't believe the site, how someone so little and kind had been put through so much. Hank left after a while and Trudy came in.
"Oh Hailey" she said sympathetically
"Do you think we couldn't prevented this, we could have stopped all the abuse" Jay asked Trudy "dad wouldn't never tell me the truth" he added
"Jay" she said sympathetically "Maybe they could have been a way to get her out, maybe we could have prevented this but it would of been a horrible experience, it probably would have broke her, these things get ugly, you saw how it was for Erin. If anything she could of landed up in a worse situation than this one. We just can't think in the past we have to look to the future. Just have comfort in the fact that he will never lay a hand on her again" Trudy said kindly leaving him alone with Hailey.
He found comfort in the steady beating of the monitors because it meant she was breathing, he kept looking at her trying to remind himself that she was just resting and prayed she would be alright.
