February 13th - February 14th, 2008
Dean finally got a lead on where Bela was, so we rushed to Colorado, where her hotel was. After we were sure no one was in there, we made our way inside, searching for the colt. We searched the room, opening all of the drawers, finding anything but the colt.
"Any sign of it?" Dean asked.
Sam put his hands out in frustration. "Nothing. Are you sure this is Bela's room?"
Dean held up two wigs. "I'd say so."
Ring! Ring!
We all shared a look. Dean walked over to the phone and looked up at Sam, who shook his head.
Dean answered it cautiously, "Where are you?" (...) "Where?" (...) "I want it back, Bela... now." (...) "You understand how many people are gonna die if you do this?" (...) "Take the only weapon we have against an army of demons and sell it to the highest bidder."
I decided to search the bathroom since it was the only place we hadn't looked, and I figured we needed some clue about where Bela was going. I looked in all of the cabinets but found nothing.
"I know I'm gonna stop you." (...) "Oh, I'll find you, sweetheart. You know why?" Dean asked. "Because I have absolutely nothing better to do than to track you down."
Suddenly the front door was kicked open, and I heard. "Hands in the air! Down on your knees!"
"That bitch!" Dean yelled.
Quickly, I opened the cabinet under the sink and climbed in. Luckily, I was small enough to fit and closed the door behind me. I stayed quiet, listened, and waited. I could only assume that it was the police and that Bela had something to do with it. No one else knew where we were.
"Turn around! Now!" a man yelled, "Where's the girl?!"
"What girl?" Dean asked.
"Your sister, dumb-ass," the officer said.
"Oh, lost her a while back," Dean said.
"Sam and Dean Winchester, you have the right to remain silent." The officer growled. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney and have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you at government expense."
"Hi, guys... it's been a while," another man said.
After a while, the room fell silent. There were no more voices and no more footsteps. When I was sure everyone was gone, I opened the cabinet door and climbed out.
I walked out into the empty room and groaned. "Now what?"
Thankfully, the town we were in was pretty small, so I just needed to find the police station, wherever that was. I decided to leave the hotel and walk out onto the street. As I made my way down the sidewalk, I realized that even though it was a small town, I still had no idea where I was going. On top of that, pretty much every store was closed and locked up for the night. Eventually, I stumbled upon a gas station and walked in, immediately looking for any maps that they had.
"Uh, miss? Can I help you?" a gruff voice asked from a small distance away.
I turned to see an older man standing behind the front counter. "Just looking for a map."
"Anything I can help you with?" he asked, starting to move from behind the counter.
"A town map would be nice. If you have one," I said, turning back to look through the maps in several different cubbies.
They had every state map, but not only did they not have a town map, but they didn't even have a Colorado map.
The man sighed as he approached my side. "Well, unfortunately. We don't have a town map."
I frowned. "Well, thanks anyway," I said and started walking toward the door.
The man cleared his throat. "Is there anything else I can help you with?"
I thought for a second with my hand on the door. "Uh, I don't have much time, so could you just tell me where the police station is?" I asked as I turned to look at him.
He raised his eyebrows. "Miss, is everything okay? Do you need help?"
I shook my head. "Nope, just the police station."
He furrowed his brow. "Well, if you take a right out of this place. Go to the end of the street and take a left, follow that road down, and eventually, you'll find it. It's the biggest building around, so you should find it pretty easily."
"Thanks," I said with a smile and walked out.
I followed the man's directions, and it didn't take long for me to find it. However, when I approached the police station, I noticed a helicopter parked in the middle of the parking lot.
When I got closer, I realized two bodies were lying beside it covered in blood. I looked around and didn't see anyone, so I ran up and found that the men were wearing police uniforms and had their throats slit. I looked up to see the pilot slumped in his seat with his throat also slit. I stepped back slowly, looking around for anyone or anything, but it was silent, and nothing moved.
I jumped when I heard a door open behind me, and I dove into a bush. As I peered up to see who was walking out of the building, my gaze landed on another police officer with his throat slit. I furrowed my brow and continued my gaze. It was then that I spotted a police officer walking out of the building, discovering the scene for himself.
As the officer approached the helicopter, he pulled out his walkie-talkie. "They're dead. I think they're all dead."
Suddenly, the helicopter exploded, sending him flying back in front of the door, where he landed on his back.
"What the hell was that? Come in? Reidy? Reidy?" a panicked voice came from the other end of the walkie-talkie.
Reidy stood up slowly and approached the burning helicopter again, only to be grabbed by one of the seemingly dead police officers. He spun around with a look of sheer terror as the dead officer slit Reidy's throat. As the dead man walked by me, the smell of sulfur hit me.
Oh great, not only were Sam and Dean trapped inside, but we were also dealing with demons.
I waited until I was sure that the demon was gone and then made my way around back, looking for the Impala.
After a few minutes, I stumbled upon an impound lot. I climbed up the chain fence a little to get a higher line of sight. Once I did, I was able to see the Impala. I looked up to see barbed wire a little ways above my head, so I dropped down and went to the gate, checking around me as I did. The gate was locked, so I pulled a bobby-pin out of my hair and got to work.
I was getting faster at lock-picking every time I tried and, thankfully, was able to unlock the gate rather quickly. I opened the gate and ran to the Impala. I again picked the lock on the trunk of the car, grabbed one of the duffel bags, and started loading it with anything that might be useful in stopping demons... salt, holy oil, etc.
Suddenly, a hand clasped around my mouth, and I was tugged back from the trunk. I quickly stomped my heel onto one of the boots of my attacker, whipped my head back, and caught them in the face. When I heard them groan and loosen their grip, I elbowed them hard in the ribs and dove for the trunk.
I grabbed a shotgun and spun around, cocking the gun as I aimed at whoever was standing behind me.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Dean said, holding up a hand while hunching down slightly and grabbing his nose.
"Dean?" I lowered the gun. "What the hell?" I asked, irritated.
"I should ask you the same thing," he said, approaching me, looking slightly annoyed.
I handed him the gun. "Well, what did you expect?"
Dean nodded. "Yeah, I know. You're right." He wiped away a tiny bit of blood that managed to escape his nose. "Just wish it wasn't me."
"How'd you get out?" I asked as he looked through the bag I had packed.
"Ah, you know, got shot in the shoulder by a possessed guard. Now all the other officers are freaked out. So, they let Sam and me out to help," Dean explained.
I nodded. "So, you already got shot tonight?"
He shrugged. "Barely a graze." He looked at me after adding a few more things to the bag and zipping it up. "Hey, you know... you're getting pretty good at defending yourself." He smiled.
I raised an eyebrow at him. "Pretty good?" I shrugged. "One quick pull of the trigger and I would have won that fight, no problem."
He smirked. "Oh yeah? How about we try again when you don't catch me off guard."
I furrowed my brow. "Catch you off guard? You came up behind me."
Suddenly, streetlights started to flicker, and the wind began to pick up. As we looked around, we could see a huge black cloud flashing with blue and pink light coming straight for us.
"Oh, yeah... forgot that we were dealing with demons," I said with slight fear in my voice.
Dean grabbed my jacket and pushed me in front of him. "Go! Go! Go!"
We ran toward the police station and to a side door.
"In here. In here." Dean pushed me through the door.
We quickly shut the door behind us as we stepped over a line of salt laid out behind it.
"They're coming! Hurry!" Dean yelled.
I looked up to see three men, including Sam, and a younger woman. While Sam was spray painting a devil's trap on the floor, the other three were lining windows and doors with salt.
Sam looked up and smiled in relief at me. "Maddison..." He stood up and walked over to me, pulling me into a hug.
"Told you she'd find us, dude," Dean said as he rushed past us.
Suddenly, the huge mass of black smoke slowly engulfed the building. The young woman screamed and clutched onto a cross around her neck. As we all backed up into the center of the room, we watched as all of the windows were covered by the black smoke. Dust began to rain from the ceiling as the building started to shake. Then the smoke slowly disappeared, and all became quiet again.
"Everybody okay?" Sam asked.
"Define 'okay,'" the man in a button-up and tie said.
"All right, everybody needs to put these on," Dean said as he dug through the bag and pulled out protection necklaces. "They'll keep you from being possessed." He handed them out to everyone except for himself and Sam. "There you go."
"What about you and Sam?" the woman asked.
Sam and Dean pulled their shirts down to reveal matching protection symbols they had tattooed on their chests.
"Smart. How long you had those?" the man in the button up asked.
"Not long enough," Sam said.
The two men and the woman looked at Sam with worry, and everything fell silent for a moment.
Dean clapped his hand on my shoulder. "This is Maddison. She's our little sister, so be nice to her 'cause she doesn't need me to kick your ass."
I rolled my eyes at him and smirked.
"Ah, so you're the sister." The man in the button-up nodded. "Well, I'm Detective Henriksen. Been after your brothers for some time now. Turns out, I've been wrong about them for just as long." He nodded to the woman. "That's Nancy." He gestured to the police officer. "That's Phil."
It was quiet for a while, so we started preparing for whatever was coming next. Henriksen and Dean were off preparing shotguns in another room, while Sam, Phil, Nancy, and I kept watch of the windows and doors.
Nancy was organizing some files when she looked up, out of one of the windows. I glanced over to see what she was looking at, but when I did, I saw a huge group of people standing outside, all with black eyes.
"Hey, that's Jenna Rubner," Nancy said, referring to one of the women standing outside.
Sam walked up to her, shaking his head. "That's not Jenna anymore."
"That's where all that black demon smoke went?" Nancy asked.
Sam nodded. "Looks like."
Suddenly, a window shattered from another room, and we all went running to see what had happened. Sam, Dean, and Henriksen had shotguns in hand, ready to shoot if they needed to. However, when we ran into the room, Ruby was standing there, stuck in a devil's trap that Sam had strategically placed below the window.
"How do we kill her?" Henriksen asked as he aimed his shotgun at her.
"We don't," Sam said, pushing Henriksen's gun down.
"She's a demon," Henriksen said.
"She's here to help us," Sam said as he walked toward Ruby.
"Are you kidding?" Phil asked.
Dean sighed in annoyance and shook his head.
"Are you gonna let me out?" Ruby asked Sam.
Sam knelt and scratched an opening in the devil's trap with his knife.
"And they say chivalry's dead. Does anyone have a breath mint?" Ruby asked as she stepped out. "Some guts splattered in my mouth while I was killing my way in here." She walked past everyone into the main office.
Sam stayed behind to fix the salt line as the rest of us followed Ruby.
"How many are out there?" Dean asked.
"Thirty at least. That's so far," Ruby said.
"Oh, good. Thirty. Thirty hit men all gunning for us. Who sent them?" Dean asked.
"You didn't tell them?" Ruby asked Sam, who was now standing in the doorway.
Dean and I quickly looked over at Sam, not having any idea what she was talking about.
"Oh, I'm surprised," Ruby said.
"Tell us what?" Dean asked.
"There's a big new up and comer. Real pied piper," Ruby said.
Sam had a look of guilt cross his face like he had been caught in a lie.
"Who is he?" Dean asked.
"Not he. Her," Ruby said as she snapped her head to look at Dean. "Her name is Lilith."
"Lilith?" Dean asked.
"And she really, really wants Sam's intestines on a stick." Ruby looked back at Sam. "'Cause she sees him as competition."
Dean turned to Sam. "You knew about this?"
Sam tightened his jaw, but he didn't answer.
"Well, gee, Sam. Is there anything else you haven't told us?!" Dean yelled.
"How about the two of you talk about this later? We'll need the colt." Ruby looked at Sam, but he averted his eyes. She then quickly looked at Dean. "Where's the colt?"
"It got stolen," Sam said.
"I'm sorry. I must have blood in my ear. I thought I just heard you say that you were stupid enough to let the colt get grabbed out of your thick, clumsy, idiotic hands." Ruby scowled at Sam and then turned around. "Fantastic. This is just peachy..."
Sam sighed. "Ruby—"
"Shut up." She raised her hand to stop him from speaking. "Fine." She turned around slowly. "Since I don't see that there's no other option. There's one other way I know how to get you out of here alive."
"What's that?" Dean asked.
"I know a spell. It'll vaporize every demon in a one-mile radius. Myself included. So, you let the colt out of your sight, and now I have to die. So next time, be more careful. How's that for a dying wish?" Ruby asked.
Dean nodded. "Okay, what do we need to do?"
"Aw... you can't do anything. This spell is very specific. It calls for a person of virtue," Ruby said.
"I got virtue," Dean said.
Ruby chuckled. "Nice try. You're not a virgin, but since you're overprotective of the little one. Then we have to use someone else."
Dean laughed. "Nobody else is a virgin."
Ruby looked at Dean and then over at Nancy, who quickly shied away.
Dean raised his eyebrows. "No. No way. You're kidding me." He looked at Nancy. "You're—"
"What?" Nancy rolled her eyes, looking almost embarrassed. "It's a choice, okay?"
"So, you— you've never... not even once?" Dean asked. "I mean not even... wow."
"So, this spell. What can I do?" Nancy smiled at Ruby.
"You can hold still..." Ruby said, "While I cut your heart out of your chest."
"What?" Nancy asked, now completely terrified.
"What? Are you crazy?" Dean asked.
"I'm offering a solution." Ruby shrugged. "That's why I didn't even ask about the kid."
"Good thinking," Dean snapped, "But you're still offering to kill somebody."
"And what do you think's gonna happen to this girl when the demons get in?" Ruby asked.
Henriksen stepped forward. "We're gonna protect her. That's what."
"Excuse me." Nancy raised her hand slightly.
"Very noble." Ruby rolled her eyes at Henriksen.
"Ex— Excuse me," Nancy said again.
"You're all gonna die. Look." Ruby shrugged. "This is the only way."
"Yeah, yeah." Dean nodded. "There's no way that you're gonna—"
"Would everybody please shut up?!" Nancy yelled, causing everyone to turn their attention to her. "All the people out there... will it save them?"
Ruby nodded. "It'll blow the demons out of their bodies. So, if their bodies are okay... yeah."
Nancy paused for a second and then nodded. "I'll do it."
Henriksen shook his head. "Hell no."
"No, no," Dean said.
"Hell no," Henriksen said again.
"You don't need to do this," Dean said.
"All my friends are out there," Nancy said.
"We don't sacrifice people. We do that, we're no better than them," Henriksen said.
"We don't have a choice." Ruby turned to me. "Unless... Maddison, are you up for it?"
I furrowed my brow and shrugged. "I mean—"
Dean shook his head. "Enough. Your choice is not a choice, Ruby."
"Sam, you know I'm right," Ruby said, turning to look at Sam.
Sam was just silent.
"Sam?" Dean asked, looking concerned by Sam's continuous silence. "What the hell is going on? Sam, tell her."
"It's my decision," Nancy said, "And I'd rather it be me than a little girl."
"Damn straight, cherry pie." Ruby smiled.
"Stop! Stop! Nobody's killing any virgins!" Dean yelled and then looked directly at Sam. "Sam, I need to talk to you." He put his arm around my shoulders and glared at Ruby as we walked by her into the hallway with Sam. "Please tell me you're not actually considering this. We're talking about holding down a girl and cutting out her heart."
Sam nodded. "And we're also talking about thirty people out there, Dean. Innocent people who are all gonna die, along with everyone in here."
"It doesn't mean that we throw away the rule book and stop acting like humans." Dean shook his head. "I'm not gonna let that demon kill some nice, sweet, innocent girl, who hasn't even been laid. I mean, look, if that's how you win wars, then I don't want to win."
"Then what? What do we do, Dean?" Sam asked.
Dean turned away for a moment, thinking. "I got a plan." He turned back. "I'm not saying it's a good one. I'm not even saying that it'll work. But it sure as hell beats killing a virgin."
"Okay, so, what's the plan?" Sam asked.
"Open the doors, let them all in, and we fight," Dean said.
The plan was simple in essence, but actually doing it was the difficult part. We were going to let all of the demons in, trap them, and exorcise them all. Sam, Dean, and Henriksen would lure and fight off the demons in the police station. Nancy and Phil would escape outside and line all of the windows and doors with salt. I would be in the main office and would be in charge of running a recording of Sam reciting an exorcism over the loudspeaker. Again, saying it would be a lot easier than actually doing it.
Sam walked out of the office after working on the loudspeaker, to join me, Dean, and Ruby.
"Get the equipment to work?" Dean asked.
"Yeah." Sam nodded.
"So?" Dean asked.
"So, this is insane," Sam said.
Ruby scoffed. "You win Understatement of the Year."
Dean rolled his eyes. "Look, I get it, you think—"
"I don't think... I know," Ruby interrupted. "It's not gonna work." She stood up and turned to the front door. "So long."
"So, you're just gonna leave?" Sam asked.
Ruby swung around to face him. "Hey. I was gonna kill myself to help you win. I'm not gonna stand here and watch you lose." She walked closer to Sam. "And I'm disappointed because I tried. I really did, but clearly, I bet on the wrong horse." She glared at Sam. "Do you mind letting me out?"
Sam sighed and then walked over to use his knife and scrape a hole in the devil's trap, then he broke the salt line in front of the door.
We watched Ruby walk out, and then the boys turned to me.
"Go grab a salt bag and stay in the office." Dean put his hand on my shoulder. "Don't start the exorcism until I tell you to."
I nodded. "Okay." I turned and picked up a salt bag and started walking to the office.
"Oh, and Maddison," Dean said.
I stopped and turned. "Yeah?"
"This doesn't work if you leave that room. So, you don't leave that room, even if something happens to me or Sam. Understand?" Dean asked.
I furrowed my brow, thinking about the possibility of that scared me.
"Maddison?" Dean asked again.
I nodded slowly. "I understand."
"Good. Now get in there." Dean pointed to the office.
I turned and walked in, closing the door behind me. The walls of the office were mostly windows, but I wasn't sure if I was happy about that or not, because I would be able to see everything, good or bad.
Nancy and Phil picked up the other salt bags and set off to make their way to the roof.
I quickly lined any entrance into the office with salt, and then I sat and waited by my equipment.
"All set?!" Dean yelled.
"Yeah!" Sam nodded.
"Ready!" Henriksen shouted.
Dean looked back at me.
I took a deep breath and exhaled. "All set!"
Dean nodded. "Let's do this."
Sam, Dean, and Henriksen got to work breaking all of the salt lines and devil's traps. Then Henriksen threw open an outside door, but nothing happened. Until a demon swung down from the doorway and kicked Henriksen in the chest.
After that, the demons flooded into the police station. Sam and Dean shot at them as they did, but eventually, one of them tackled Sam. The demon that attacked Henriksen picked him up and pinned him against the wall. Sam and Dean continued fighting off the demons, but Henriksen was having no luck getting the demon off him.
I stood up and smacked the window. "The holy water!" I yelled at him.
A look of realization crossed his face, and he pulled the flask of holy water out of his pocket and splashed it at the demon, who scream and let him go. Then a small group of demons realized I was in the office and started pounding on the windows and doors.
I began pacing, waiting for Dean to tell me to start the recording when suddenly, Sam, Dean, and Henriksen were all pinned against the wall by an unseen force. I stopped pacing and watched out of the window and saw that one demon had stepped forward with her hand outstretched. All of the other demons stood around her, almost as if they were cheering her on.
"Maddi! Now!" Dean yelled as he struggled against the wall.
I ran over and hit play on the recorder, and the entire building started echoing with Sam's voice. I walked over to the window and watched as all of the demons began flailing around and screaming until the recording got partway through and stopped working.
"What? No. No. No." I spun around and ran back to the recorder.
The pounding started up on my windows and doors again, and I turned to see that all of the demons were now severely pissed off and aimed at getting into the office to get me.
"Maddison?!" Dean yelled, "What's going on?!"
"I don't know! Give me a sec!" I yelled back, I kept hitting the play button, but it just wouldn't start.
"We don't really have that long!" Dean yelled.
"Dean!" I screamed. "Shut up! Please!" I pushed the recorder to the side and grabbed the mic. I pushed the button, and a high-pitched sound echoed through the building. I laughed. "Yes! Thank god!" I picked up the mic and turned to face the demons. "Hello, ladies and gentlemen. I hope everyone's had a nice day so far because you've all got yourselves a one-way ticket back to Hell." I smirked at them as my voice echoed through the building. "Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus, omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio infernalis adversarii, omnis legio..." I watched as the demons started to freak out again and run for the doors and windows to escape. "Omnis congregatio et secta diabolica, ergo draco maledicte, ut ecclesiam tuam secura, tibi facias libertate servire..."
Sam and Dean stared at me, looking totally impressed and proud.
"Te rogamus, audi nos!" I yelled, and then black demon smoke started to explode from the demons' mouths.
All of the bodies of the possessed people dropped to the ground. As the smoke was collected together on the ceiling, it started swirling. As it did, purple electricity burst through it, and then the smoke exploded into fire and disappeared into the ceiling.
Everyone rose to their feet, looking around confused and scared. I walked out of the office and over to Sam and Dean, who were just getting onto their own feet.
Dean wiped the blood from his mouth and pulled me into a hug. "You're awesome."
Sam chuckled, still breathing heavily, and ruffled my hair.
Nancy and Phil helped patch up the injured people, while Sam, Dean, Henriksen, and I packed up.
"I better call it in." Henriksen sighed. "Hell of a story I won't be telling."
"So, what are you gonna tell them?" Sam asked.
"The least ridiculous lie I can come up with in the next five minutes," Henriksen said.
"Good luck with that. Not to pressure you or anything, but what are you planning to do about us?" Dean asked.
"I'm gonna kill you. Maddison was MIA to begin with, but Sam and Dean Winchester were in the chopper when it caught on fire. Nothing left. Can't even identify them with dental records," Henriksen said.
Sam smiled.
"Rest in peace, guys." Henriksen smiled back.
Sam and Dean shook hands with Henriksen and nodded in appreciation.
"Now get out of here," Henriksen said.
Sam nodded. "Yeah..."
Back in our motel room, Sam and I laid on the beds, relaxing from the craziness of the night, while Dean sat and looked for new cases.
Knock! Knock!
Sam and I sat up as Dean walked over and opened the door.
Ruby walked in, closing the door behind her. "Turn on the news."
Sam grabbed the remote and clicked the TV on, which showed a female reporter standing in front of the police station we had left just hours before, but now it was smoking and had been burned down.
"The community is still reeling from the tragedy that happened just a few hours ago. Authorities believe a gas main ruptured..." the news reporter said.
Dean sat down on the bed with me and watched in disbelief.
The reporter continued, "Causing the massive explosion that ripped apart the police station and claimed the lives of everyone inside. Among the deceased, at least six police officers and staff, including Sheriff Melvin Dodd, Deputy Phil Amici, and Secretary Nancy Fitzgerald, as well as three FBI agents, identified as Steven Groves, Calvin Reidy, and Victor Henriksen." They flashed pictures of Henriksen, Nancy, and Phil. "Two fugitives in custody were also killed. We'll continue to follow the story here at the scene, but for now, back to you, Jim."
Ruby turned off the TV and gave us an "I told you so" look.
Sam shook his head. "Must have happened right after we left."
"Considering the size of the blast..." Ruby tossed us each a hex bag. "Smart money's on Lilith."
"What's in these?" Dean asked.
"Something that'll protect you. Throw Lilith off your trail... for the time being, at least," Ruby said.
Sam nodded. "Thanks."
Ruby shook her head. "Don't thank me. Lilith killed everyone. She slaughtered your precious little virgin, plus a half a dozen other people. So, after your big speech about humanity and war, turns out your plan was the one with the body count. Do you know how to run a battle? You strike fast, and you don't leave any survivors. So, no one can go running to tell the boss. So next time... we go with my plan." She walked to the door and slammed it behind her as she left.
