Chapter Twenty Six
"Can you believe that we are engaged, and I have never once been to your office?" Rory sat on the edge of Logan's desk holding her coffee with both hands, "until now, that is."
"Well, we have rectified the problem. Everything you hoped it would be?"
"More glass than I expected. I expected more like your office when you were in London."
"That was Mitchum's office…this," he looked around, "LHM, it is all me."
"It feels very Google…or maybe Apple? Or I guess, it feels how I would expect them to look."
"It's the Silicon Valley thing," Logan shrugged, "we're not that original. So, not that I'm not happy to see you, but what brings you here?"
They had two more days until the boys returned and Rory had to head back to Encino, Logan had to spend the day in the office for meetings, but he had assured Rory he would get out by three so they could spend time together. Rory took a sip of her coffee and smiled, "well, I wanted to talk to you about something that I might need to attend to….and I kind of need to tell you something."
"Sounds ominous," Logan admitted. "Everything alright?"
"We haven't really," Rory paused, she put her coffee down beside her, "we said kids were a maybe, but…I'm wondering…do you want kids of your own? With me, I mean? Do you want kids of your own with me? Because I…I have four kids, so I can understand why you might not want more…but if I'm being honest, I think I would really like to have kids with you. But if you don't want any, I get that…four is a lot. Five is a lot…what if we had more than one? We would be those people that have six kids? I mean…Eli will be able to drive in a few years, so that helps, we wouldn't need to buy a mini bus or something, but we would certainly be close enough to fielding a baseball team or something…the infield? I think it's the infield…yes, the infield at least."
Logan grinned, he loved when Rory got nervous and started to ramble. "Who else would I want to have kids with?"
"I don't know, someone without a used uterus or something?"
"Ace," Logan put both of his palms on her cheeks and tried hard not to laugh, "the only person in the universe that I want to have kids with is you. I have waited this long for us to end up here, so whether you already have four or fourteen kids, I want to have kids with you, or a kid…whatever the universe deems appropriate…that is how many kids I want to have with you. But you said the first couple of years are hard for you, so I also want to make sure that you are supported. If we have a baby, all of the big kids will be in school, and we will be in Stars Hollow. Is that something that you think would help you?"
Rory smiled and nodded her head, she didn't imagine that having four kids in Manhattan had helped her anxiety after the birth of the twins. "So there is one more thing."
"Alright? Hit me with it." Logan moved his hands from her cheeks to her waist and smiled.
"I think I might need to go to New York and see Paris," she told him, "about the baby thing." Rory paused once more, "there was a brief period of time after the twins were born where Perry and I…tried, kind of…for another. I realize saying it out loud how nuts that is. Anyway, I just think I should see her and get her expertise on this whole reproduction thing."
"Ace, whatever you want we can do. But I think maybe we should have some fun trying before we start giving sperm samples to Paris. You and I aren't you and Perry…"
"Your confidence in me is astounding," Rory admitted, "so then…I guess…when?"
"God I feel like we're twenty again," Logan laughed, "come on, let's go get lunch and we can talk about this. You sitting on my desk like this I can barely concentrate."
"Why don't you think about it," Rory slid off of his desk and stood up, "and we'll talk about it at dinner. I shouldn't have just blown in here and inserted myself in your day. You have work, I should be writing."
"I'll make a reservation for dinner, but for the record, you are never interrupting me."
"Fancy?"
"Why not. We go back to chicken nuggets and macaroni in a couple of days?"
"See you in a few hours?" Rory put her arms around his neck and her head on his chest, "I love you."
"Love you too, Ace," Logan ran a hand down her back and inhaled her scent, "I'm glad you came to visit."
"Next time we'll plan it and you can show me around?"
"Of course," Logan assured her. "You drove?"
"Took the Porsche, is that ok?" Rory hadn't even considered for a moment that Logan would care if she took one of his three cars.
"What's mine is yours, Ace."

Rory spent most of her afternoon getting ready for their date night and packing, the next morning they would be heading to Encino to grocery shop and make sure that the house was ready for the boys to come home. Perry would spend one night in town before heading back to Buffalo and then Logan would stay through the weekend to hang out with the kids, and discuss some details of the house plans that had been sent to them for review after an initial discussion with a designer, a space designer, an architect and the builder that Honor had insisted was the best that Connecticut had to offer. Rory and Logan had gone back and forth on some of the needs in the house. They had agreed that they needed at least 6 bedrooms upstairs and a couple of guest rooms in the basement, Logan and Rory had agreed to a shared office, there was a pool house that reminded her a lot of her Grandparents old house. The kitchen was large, much like her kitchen in Encino, they just needed to decide on an aesthetic style which Rory was hoping the designer and space designer could do. She wasn't completely clear on why all of those people were necessary, but it was a battle she was choosing not to have. Rory had gone through the several items that she had hung in the closet in Logan's bedroom, she picked out a black jumpsuit that she had brought as an option to wear over Christmas, it was probably a bit too formal for date night but she looked good and she felt good as she paired the Lena strapless jumpsuit with the pair of Louboutin heels that Logan had gifted her and accessorized with her enormous engagement ring.
"Ace?" Logan called as he walked into the house from the garage. "You upstairs?"
"Just getting dressed," Rory looked at herself in the mirror as she applied some mascara, "upstairs."
Logan's voice grew louder as he got closer to the bedroom, "jesus Rory, you look amazing."
"Thank you," Rory put the mascara down and turned to him, "you didn't really give me much to go off of…"
"Well I think you will be the most beautiful woman in the room," Logan kissed her gently, "I missed you. How was your day?" He asked as he began undoing the buttons of his shirt and looked in his closet, he smiled as he saw that she had left a few more belongings in there that she had unpacked through the day. He had told her to leave as much as she wanted, but Rory was hesitant, not wanting to overstep. "We're going to an Italian place, in San Francisco, on Hyde Street, Frascati."
"I have heard of it," Rory admitted, when she had been trying to decide on a restaurant for them to eat at a few months earlier, it had come up on a list of recommended places in the area.
"There is something I want to talk about," Logan told her as they both made their way into the bedroom, Logan was changing from his blue dress pants and light blue shirt into a pair of black dress pants and a crisp white shirt while Rory put her lipstick into the pink Hermes bag that Logan had given her years earlier.
"And you say I'm the ominous one?" Rory laughed as she sat down on the edge of the bed, watching appreciatively as he got dressed.
"Well, we've already talked babies, so why not really shake things up today," Logan leaned forward and kissed her, "stop looking at me like that or we're never going to make it to dinner."
"Like what!" Rory grinned.
"Like you want to take these clothes off of me."
"Well I do," Rory winked, "but what do you want to talk about?"
"Money," Logan exhaled, Rory raised her eyebrows to him, "I know we kind of…glossed over it with the house stuff, but I just…I don't want you to be afraid of the money. It isn't my money, it is our money. I know that it is a lot, and I know that I like to buy you expensive things…but I hate the deer in the headlights look I get whenever I get you something, or suggest something expensive."
"I do not look like a deer caught in the headlights!"
"You do, you freeze like I've tossed a live grenade at you. Which…I don't know, maybe that is part of why I like to get you things, because you don't expect them…but it feels like you don't believe me when I say that everything I have, all of it…it is just as much yours as it is mine."
"We aren't even married yet Logan," Rory countered, "and you have worked so hard for this, all of those years have paid off but that was your work."
"Do you plan on leaving me?" she shook her head and Logan smiled as he did the buttons on his shirt, "Rory, we are two grown people, and I have something for you and I need to know that you have heard me, I need to know that you believe that you are my family. You and Eli, Luca, James, Christopher…you guys are it for me."
"I believe you," Rory assured him with a smile, "but please don't tell me you bought a Bahama, because I think anyone would look at you like you were crazy if you said that. Except maybe my Mother, but she doesn't get a vote on this."
"Tell me why you have been so hesitant about the money?"
Rory sighed, "there was a moment, when I was separated and we were dealing with all of that… stuff, things got a bit messy. When we got married, I had my trust funds, he had his contract, I worked for Grandpa…" she paused to think back on the details. "Anyway, when Grandpa died and then Grandma, I came into some more money, you know how much I have…but his lawyer made a push for some of that money, and it just…it made me question everything I thought I knew. We worked through it, and it turns out he didn't know his lawyer was going to do that…he got a new lawyer shortly after, but the damage was done. I just…money makes things… weird."
"Rory, we can't build a life together if you aren't willing to move past some of the shit with Perry," Logan told her honestly as he went to his dresser and pulled out a small envelope. "I am not trying to diminish your feelings on the subject because that is shitty, and it is a relief that it was just a rogue lawyer…but I'm not Perry, Perry isn't me, and I need you to be an equal in this. I don't want you to ask about doing things or ask about taking a car. They are ours."
"Ok."
"Say it."
"They are ours." Rory nodded.
"And so is this, this is yours," Logan handed her the American Express Black card
"Logan," Rory paused and thought back to what he said, "this is a very kind gesture."
"I don't care what you use it for," Logan told her before she could continue, he put his wallet and cellphone in his pocket and extended a hand to her, "it can be groceries or school supplies, stuff for the house, whatever…I'm not asking you to spend money you aren't comfortable spending. I am just asking you to start sharing this part of your life with me. In the interest of transparency, I will give you the bill to review at the end of the month if you want. I would like to add you to some of my accounts, you don't have to add me to anything, just what you are comfortable with. But Rory, you need to know that you are my equal. In everything, anything…I have worked hard, and we can play harder, trust me, I know that…but I need you to see it as yours too."
"Alright, fine."
"Fine?"
"Fine."
"That was much easier than I expected," Logan pulled her from her seated position and kissed her, "car is going to be here any minute."
"It is going to take some time," Rory pulled her wallet out of her purse and slipped the card in, "and I will add you to my stuff too."
"I just need us to build a life together Rory. I made the mistake once, I didn't talk to you about what was going on, what I wanted or needed, however you want to put it…but we make our decisions together now."
"I mean, you didn't really give me a say in this whole Amex thing," Rory winked as they walked down the stairs. She was glad that Logan had said what he needed to say, they had discussed the money a little bit after their engagement, and while they had discussed numbers, they certainly hadn't discussed merging anything. She knew that to Logan, having this discussion somehow made them more solid, like it was an agreement of sorts to make things more binding.
"That was my gift to you," Logan laughed as they stepped out the front door to the waiting SUV.
"So what is the deal with this car service? Yours? LHM? HPG? ABC? DEF?" Rory joked.
"This is a perk with LHM, I don't usually use it in the evening unless I am going to an event for the company, but I thought we could enjoy a few drinks and take the responsible route home."
"Remember back when I used to have to herd you idiots into my car after a night of partying?"
"How could I forget," Logan laughed, "sometimes I used to wonder," he opened the door to car and helped Rory in before stepping in himself, "if you just tolerated the guys because of me or if you really liked them. But I see now that it was the latter, you loved them."
"They were family," Rory shrugged as she put on her seatbelt. "When I took time off from Yale and things were… weird with my Mom, you and the guys, Steph, Juliet, Rosemary…you were all I had, and my Grandparents, of course, but they were trying to live out this weird re-do of my Mom. Colin and Finn, they never treated me like I was your friend, we were all just a team." Rory explained, "I'm sorry if me staying friends with them was weird for you."
"I didn't even know you stayed friends with them until we met up again, so I don't think you should be apologizing for anything." Logan promised her as the car began to move down the roads on the 45 minute drive to the restaurant. "Did you get a chance to look at the house stuff this afternoon?"
"I guess we have a long drive to talk about all this stuff," Rory laughed. "I did, I sent back some ideas, I really like my white and black kitchen, so I think I want to stick with that, light floors…I just…I don't want any of it to feel stuffy. No matter how big it is, I want it to feel like a home, and a safe place for the kids, for their friends, for our friends kids, your nephews…"
"I love that about you," Logan told her honestly.
Rory smiled and watched the residential streets turn into the freeway, the truth was, her house in Stars Hollow had always been a safe place. All of her friends, or her not friends were welcome as the case may have been. "My Mom always made sure that her house felt safe, and I have always wanted that for my boys. They love the house in Encino, so I want that same feel. I get it, it will be big, that just kind of happens when you have four kids and want to grow your family, but…I don't want it to be sterile."
"Like my parents house?" Logan laughed.
"I didn't say that."
"You thought it," Logan knew he was right, and it didn't bother him, it wasn't a shock to him that his parents home hadn't exactly been warm and inviting, nor had most of his friends homes. "You're right though, I want our kids, the boys, everyone to feel comfortable at our home, so I'm sure I will love it."
"Did you see the updates to the master bedroom?" Rory asked him.
"You added a fireplace?"
Rory nodded, "I thought it would be a nice place to read."
"I think it sounds perfect," Logan reached for her hand. "Want to return to that conversation from my office?"
"About more kids?" Logan nodded in response and gave her hand a gentle squeeze, "When do you want to have them?"
"Ace, without sounding like a Dr. Seuss book, I would have a kid with you here, there, tomorrow, next month, next year…"
Rory felt her face flush as a smile crept along her lips. His constant faith in her was always something she had loved. Logan never questioned her, he never made her feel like she couldn't have anything she put her mind to. Maybe that was one of the things that she had originally fallen in love with, his unwavering faith in her. It was a trait that some people didn't understand, her Mother was one of those people initially, she didn't understand that while it may have seemed as though Logan pushed her to be someone different, he pushed her to challenge herself. "Well, I have an IUD," she told him, "so I would have to make an appointment to have it removed…and then what…when it happens, it happens? What about the wedding?"
"We get married when we get married," Logan shrugged, "I was kind of thinking doing it in Stars Hollow would be nice."
"You want to get married in Stars Hollow?" Rory looked at him, Logan never ceased to surprise her, and this was no different.
"Rory, that town made you who you are, so we can get married at the inn, or maybe we can get married at our place when it's done…but I can't think of a better place to marry you than the place that made you who you are."
