It was odd coming home to the empty house. Putting his bag down, it didn't feel as cold and miserable as before. Knowing that Gabby still loved him and things were looking good for them, made it a whole lot less hard to be here alone. Besides, it would only be for a few weeks.

He had texted her that he had arrived back in Chicago in the uber. As she was at work, he didn't want to disturb her any further, knowing that she was busy working. He would call her tomorrow, as he knew she would be home before working a night shift.

Throwing his laundry in the machine he soon made some dinner and after a movie, he laid down in bed. It was strange being home again, but he felt a lot happier as even though he and Gabby were long distance, it felt a lot happier.

Right as he wanted to go to sleep, he heard his phone ping and he smiled as Gabby had send him a picture of one of the kids playing with the dollhouse that he had made with her help. Sending her another text that he loved her, he knew that even though it would be hard they would get through these last four weeks before seeing her again.

Smiling at the picture, he fell asleep, sleeping well for the first time in this house in weeks.

Gabby sat in the nurses station, smiling as she scrolled through the pictures that she and Matt had taken the last few days. Chuckling as she saw the picture of Matt she took in her backyard, his back bright red from the sun as he had been too stubborn to put on sunscreen.

The days together had been so nice and she already missed him. It made the fact that they had to work out a way to be together even harder.

As her pager went off, she got up, leaving her phone behind, still deep in thought as she walked to the nursery she was paged too.

One of the nurses asked her to hold a crying baby, as she had to go and get more antibiotics.

Taking the baby in her arms, her heart ached for a second. There was nothing more she wanted than having a family one day with the man she loved so much. Only now that she had seen him again and they had rekindled there love, those feelings had grown. She knew she had left him and Chicago behind because that dream had been shattered and there was nothing he could change about that and neither could she.

But now that there was so much to work out anyway about what they were going to do, she hoped that this was a hurdle they could also overcome.

Walking into Molly's, he closed the door behind him.

He was a little nervous seeing the others again. Although only Kelly and Christopher knew that he had gone to see Gabby, he wasn't ready to tell everybody about how they were doing. He wanted to keep it to themselves, as there was so much they still had to work out.

''Look who is back!'' Cruz yelled, happy to see Matt as he walked to the bar.

''How was the fishing trip?'' Christopher smiled as Matt arrived at the bar.

Matt smiled appreciative, Christopher knew he had gone to Puerto Rico, but clearly went along with the lie that Matt had told at the firehouse as he did not want to tell everybody that he and Gabby were rekindling their marriage.

''Yeah, it was nice,'' he said as he took the beer from Hermann. Kelly was the only one who knew that he had gone to Puerto Rico. He wouldn't be surprised if the rest suspected it. But he didn't want to tell them everything yet.

He and Gabby would still have to work out how they were going to move forward and the last thing he wanted was for other people to get into their business. He knew they cared greatly about them both, but they needed this time to work out what they wanted and how they were going to move forward.

After two beers, he announced he was heading home as he had to get up early tomorrow for a construction before he was getting back to work in two days. Ordering an Uber, Kelly walked outside with him, clearly wanting to know how the trip had been as Matt had not let him know much.

''So you going to let me know how it went now.''

''It went well Kelly – I just…. me and Gabby don't want to talk about it much yet as we don't know where we are yet.''

''Alright, that sounds good-''

''I don't want to say too much, we have a lot to talk about and work out together.''

''That is fine, just know that I am here for you if there is anything I can do,'' Kelly offered and Matt nodded appreciative. Kelly walked back inside as Matt waited for the taxi, not wanting to be home too late as he had a contracting job tomorrow.

Two days later, after the construction job and a shift, he booted up the laptop, sitting at the kitchen table. This was finally the moment he had been waiting for days, he would finally see and talk to Gabby again.

Reception was spotty around her house at best and today they wanted to videocall.

Giddy he opened the laptop. Starting up the program, he received the called from Gabby and smiled as the camera showed her sitting in a coffee bar, having gone there so they could finally call.

''Hey, how are you doing? You look great.''

''Thanks, I'm doing good, you too?''

''All good, the first shift back was hectic but good,'' Matt smiled, moving the laptop a little closer. He couldn't stop smiling as he finally saw her again, even if it was digitally.

They chatted about their days. Although they had texted it was different and he was just glad to finally see and speak to her again.

''I have been thinking a lot…and I know I am getting ahead of things given we don't even know where we are going to live – but I really still want a family with you – and I hope you still feel the same.''

His heart fluttered, he wanted nothing more than a family with Gabby, still. Especially since it was the reason that she had left.

''I know I can't carry the baby, but maybe when I am in Chicago and we talked some more…we can look into surrogacy?''

He was lost for words, just so happy that she was saying this.

''Matt?''

''Yes! Yes ofcourse. Gabby, you don't know how happy you are making me by even saying this-''

''I know we still have to work out so much and it is really early but I know we don't have all the time in the world.''

Matt nodded, they were both in their mid-thirties, so eventually they had to make a choice about this.

''By the way, you fixed the shower but the sink is playing up now,'' Gabby said, as these were also the things they should talk about in person and not via video chat. It wasn't that long anymore anyway.

''Oh, I just get to be your personal handyman?''

''As if you mind!'', She teased him back and he laughed.

''Not at all, send me a video and some pictures and maybe I can help you out.''

''You are amazing.''

''Anything I can do to help,'' he smiled.

''Alright, I think the bar is going to close down soon, you available to call tomorrow?''

''I will be on shift, but you can still call.''

''Okay, I love you,'' she smiled, so happy to see his face again.

''From here to Puerto Rico…''

''….and to the moon and back,'' she smiled before ending the call.

Walking into his office, he saw Kelly sneak around hiss office, clearly trying to work out if he was calling with Gabby.

''Hey you,'' Matt chuckled as he saw Kelly walked up against one of the beds, too busy watching Matt instead of looking in front of him.

''Hey, what's so funny?''

''Kelly is trying to work out if I am calling you and how we are doing.''

''So he is not doing it doing it inconspicuously?''

''Not at all,'' Matt chuckled. Gabby laughed as well and he couldn't help the smile on his face. Sitting down on the bed, he was so glad to talk to her. With both their shifts, it had been hard being in contact over de last few days.

It was only another twenty-one days before he would see her here again. It was something he greatly looked forward too and it was getting harder to miss her every day. He knew that they could do this for a while, but not forever. Eventually they had to find a way to be together instead of long distance.

''So when I am in Chicago, I thought it might be nice to rent a chalet somewhere, spend some time together –'''

Before Matt could answer, the alarm went off as they were called to a housefire.

''We can talk about it later okay, I got to go. I love you!''

Before Gabby could tell him she loved him as well, he hung up the phone. A smile appeared on her face thinking of him running towards the truck. As much as she loved her live on Puerto Rico, she started to miss Matt and her life there more and more.
