Rose paced anxiously, as she watched the two men that she loved dearly, antagonise each other. There was enough tension in the room to drown in.
"That was a real spaceship?" Rose inquired, though she already knew the answer, she just wanted to try to break the tension. Though, she probably would have more like winning the lottery at this moment in time.
"Yep." The doctor answered irritatedly looking at the screen on the console.
"So what do you think is happening? Are they invading?"
"Funny way to invade, putting the world on red alert." Mickey answered.
"Good point!" The doctor announced, clearly shocked by Mickey. He then turned back to the screen. "So, what're they up to?"
Without a second thought, the doctor moved.
000
"So, what're you doing down there?" Mickey asked the Doctor, who was under the grating, fiddling with the controls.
"Rickey," He mumbled around his sonic screwdriver.
"Mickey."
"Rickey," He replied again, seizing the screwdriver out of his mouth. "If I was to tell you what I was doing to the controls of my frankly magnificent time ship, would you even begin to understand?"
"I suppose not..."
"Shut it, then," He ordered, settling the screwdriver back in his teeth and going back to his work.
"Some friend you've got," Mickey said to Rose after throwing the Doctor another dirty look.
Rubbing her forehead, she eyed them both. "He's winding you up." Sighing, when she saw Mickey still upset though she couldn't blame him. "I am sorry."
"Every day, I looked," Mickey stated, she could hear the worry in his voice. "On every street corner, wherever I went, looking for a blue box for a whole year."
"I know," Rose responded quietly. "It's only been a few days for me. I don't know. It's, it's hard to tell inside this thing," She gave a small smile to him. "but I don't think it will be that long next time."
"You're not staying, are you?" Mickey asked sadly because she was confident he knew the answer.
"I can't." She began, she saw the devastation in his eyes as she spoke. "Not after all I've seen, and there is so much more."
She realised she would have to rip the rest of the bandaid off sooner or later.
"Got it!" The Doctor shouted excitedly as he jogged to the console. "Ha, ha!" Rose provided an apologetic glance to Mickey before striding to the Doctor's side. She could wait a little longer to sit Mickey down and talk properly to him, she supposed. "Patched in the radar, looped it back twelve hours so we can follow the flight of that spaceship. Here we go... Hold on. Come on." He sighed with irritation as he thumped the computer screen. "That's the spaceship on its way to Earth, see?" He moved his finger on the screen to show her the flight path on the visual that came on screen. "Except. Hold on. See? The spaceship did a slingshot around the Earth before it landed."
"So wait, you're saying it came from the earth?" She questioned rhetorically.
"Exactly, they haven't just arrived," The doctor informed her, still gazing at the screen.. "they've been here for a while. The question is, what have they been doing?
The doctor then altered the screen to a news channel.
"How many channels do you get?" Mickey asked, looking over their shoulder, making Rose roll her eyes.
"All the basic packages." He replied.
"You get sports channels?"
"Yes, I get the football." The Doctor responded mockingly. Rose despite herself smiled. "Hold on, I know that lot."
"It is looking likely that the Government's bringing in alien specialists - those people who have devoted their lives to studying outer space." The woman reporter informed.
"UNIT. United Nations Intelligence Taskforce." The doctor told her. "Good people."
"You worked for them?" She inquired though again it wasn't really a question.
"Of course he's worked for them." Mickey interrupted. The doctor himself was of course taken back by Mickey certainty. "Oh yeah, don't think I sat on my backside for twelve months, Doctor. I read up on you. You look deep enough on the Internet or in the history books, and there's his name, followed by a list of the dead."
She knew Mickey was trying to frighten her into leaving the doctor, but that would never work. If she had her way she would never leave him.
'Little wolf.' The voice spoke and warmth spread through her.
"That's nice." The Doctor sarcastically answered. "Good boy, Ricky."
Rose just sighed in annoyance at both of the children.
"If you know them, why don't you go and help?" Mickey asked.
"They wouldn't recognise me," The doctor answered, before moving around the room. "I've changed a lot since the old days. Besides, the world's on a knife-edge. There's aliens out there and fake aliens. We want to keep this alien out of the mix. I'm going undercover. And er, I'd better keep the Tardis out of sight. Ricky, you've got a car. You can do some driving."
"Where to?" Mickey asked as they followed the doctor to the door.
"The roads are clearing." The Doctor answered. "Let's go and have a look at that spaceship."
Yet no sooner, as they stepped out of the Tardis, they were surrounded by armed police and the roar of helicopter blades, telling them to put their hands above their heads.
"Really!" She uttered aloud as Mickey legged it only to be chased by a couple of men in uniform.
"Rose!" Rose saw her mum scream as she was being held back by soldiers. "Rose!"
"Raise your hands above your head!" An officer spoke on the loudspeaker. "You are under arrest!"
As she did as she was told, she couldn't help but groan when the Doctor spoke. "Take me to your leader."
"This is a bit posh don't you think?" She mumbled as she got into the police vehicle. "too posh to be arrested, so if we aren't being attested then what?"
"Defiantly being escorted." The Doctor answered cheerfully.
Downing Street, She had no doubt.
"If we are being escorted, I can only assume we are going somewhere important." She replied. "Somewhere like Downing Street."
"Yep." He clarified happily. "Downing Street, I hate to say it, but Mickey was right. Over the years I've visited this planet a lot of times, and I've been, er, noticed."
"Now they need you?"
"Like it said on the news. They're gathering experts in alien knowledge. And who's the biggest expert of the lot?" He grinned waiting for her answer.
"Patrick Moore?" Rose asked, one eyebrow raised sardonically.
"Apart from him." He frowned, before rolling his eyes.
"Oh, don't you just love it."
"I'm telling you. Lloyd George, he used to drink me under the table. Who's the Prime Minister now?" He questioned curiously.
"How should I know?" Rose frowned. "I missed a year."
When they arrived at 10 Downing Street, they noticed the abundance of police cars and paparazzi already stationed there. And of course, The Doctor being him, jumped out of the vehicle, waving and grinning at the cameras.
"Oh, my God." Was all that Rose could say, as she got out the vehicle, slowly and wrung her hands nervously.
Looking down away from the paparazzi, Rose followed the doctor into number Ten where they were directed to a waiting room.
"Ladies and gentlemen, can we convene?" A troubled looking man spoke, that she could only presume was the aid. "Quick as we can, please. It's this way on the right, and can I remind you ID cards are to be worn at all times."
The aid then strolled towards them and handed the doctor an id card.
"Here's your ID card." He then glanced at Rose. "I'm sorry, your companion doesn't have clearance."
"I don't go anywhere without her." The doctor stated as if it was a matter of fact. Rose couldn't help but smile at this.
"You're the code nine, not her." The aid argued. "I'm sorry, Doctor. It is the Doctor, isn't it? She'll have to stay outside."
"She's staying with me." The doctor disputed again.
"Look, even I don't have clearance to go in there." The aid countered. "I can't let her in and that's a fact."
It was obvious that the man was distressed, and though she did not want to part with the doctor, she decided to de-escalate the situation. "It's all right. You go."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course I am," she replied, as she caught sight of Harriet Jones, despite what happened at their last meeting, Rose couldn't help but be delighted to see a friendly face. Though, the aid was not thrilled to see her as he walked over. "You're the only one that knows what we are dealing with," Rose informed him with a smile. "so find out why the aliens are going to so much trouble."
"Fine," He answered, frowning. "I won't be long. Don't get in any trouble."
Rose said nothing except watch him leave.
"I'm going to have to leave you with security." The aid said, catching her attention, she was about to follow him when Harriet came up to them.
"It's alright," Harriet said. "I'll look after her. Let me be of some use." She then shifted to Rose, smiling kindly. "Walk with me," she said and directed her towards the door. "Just keep walking...That's right... don't look round!" She then flashed her id card. "Harriet Jones, MP Flydale North."
"This friend of yours, he's an expert, is that right?" Harriet questioned once she knew they were alone. "He knows about aliens?"
"Yes, he's the best?" Rose replied before adding. "Why do you want to know?"
However, this only caused Harriet to cry. Rose not knowing what else to do put her arms around her. "It's okay?" She spoke as soothingly as she could. "Tell me when you are ready."
Wiping her eyes, Harriet pulled Rose into the Cabinet room and immediately closed the door away from prying eyes.
"They turned the body into a suit," Harriet told her, as she showed her flesh suit. "A disguise for the thing inside!"
"It's alright. I believe you. It's, it's alien." Rose reassured Harriet again as she started crying. "They must have some serious technology behind this." She surveyed the room, attempting to remember every little detail from the first time. "If we could find it, we could use it."
Rose then shifted to the large cabinet, knowing what was about to happen she took a deep breath before opening it.
As expected, the prime minister's body fell to the floor.
"Oh, my God! Is that the-" Harriet began when the door opened for the aid to walk in.
"Harriet, for God's sake. This has gone beyond a joke. You cannot just wande-." The aid froze when he saw the body. "Oh, my God. That's the Prime Minister!"
"Oh!" A female voice spoke, causing them to all glance to the door. Rose automatically narrowed her eyes as she caught sight of the woman. Margaret. "Has someone been naughty?"
"That's impossible." The aid asserted clearly disbelieving what he was seeing. "He left this afternoon. The Prime Minister left Downing Street. He was driven away!"
"And who told you that, hmm?" Margaret said giggling. "Me."
All three of them watched as she then reached for her hairline.
The room began to fill with blue light and the female alien started to wriggle out of the skin-suit.
