Chapter 11: Day at the Park.
It had now been a month since Nick had been shot, but his recovery had been a relatively quick one and he had been glad, because he loved his job and he also loved being at home with his wife. After his release from hospital, their friends from Division -15 had thrown a tiny party and both of Andy's parents had been round to see them. Andy had not raised the potential idea of kids yet, because she saw how much both she and Nick loved their job and she knew that having a child would change that.
It was a Saturday morning and the married couple were both off and having a lie-in, enjoying both their sleep and their time together. Their time together was interrupted by the sound of Andy's mobile, so she rolled over and looked at the screen. It was Sam. Why was Sam calling her at 9 in the morning, on a Saturday morning, maybe it was a mistake, but, just in case there was something wrong, Andy answered it; she knew that Sam would never ignore her call and they were friends. "Hey Sam, what's up?"
There was a pause on the other end of the phone before Sam replied, "McNally, I was wondering if you and Collins could do me a favor?" Andy smiled, because she knew that Sam would never call her by her new name, but she was interested in why he was calling her. She indicated to Nick that he needed to be awake, so he nodded and kissed her hair, as she waited for Sam to continue. "You see, it was supposed to be my weekend to have Mya. But I have to work and Marlo's been called in too and her sister can't watch her, so I was wondering if you and Collins could watch her for the weekend?"
Andy didn't even have to think about the answer, because she loved seeing how her husband was with kids and she liked being around them, too, so she replied, "Of course, Sam. Just drop her round when you're ready." She ended the call, then turned to face Nick and, after kissing him for a while said, "Get up, soldier boy. We need to get dressed."
Leaving bed and following his wife's suit of throwing on some clothes, which, in his case, was a pair of blue jeans and a blue jumper, with a jacket because it was cold, Nick asked, "Andy, what did Swarek want and why are we in a rush?"
Pulling on some old jeans and a warm jumper and putting her hair up because it had not yet been washed, she replied, "Because Sam needs up to watch Mya for the weekend. I have a feeling if he doesn't, Marlo might use it against him." She did not understand how Sam and Marlo could always fight over the custody of their child, because they both loved her.
"What are we going to do with a baby for a whole weekend?"
Andy smiled and turned to face her husband, moving over to bed to be closer to him. "You came up with that great game for Leo. You're a natural with kids, Nick."
Her husband smiled at her flattery. "But Leo's a kid. Mya is a baby." He paused, then grinned and added, "We'll figure it out, I'm sure." They kissed again, then they had some toast for breakfast, before there was a knock on the door. Taking Mya for the weekend worked well for Andy, because she wanted her and Nick to spend time with a baby before they talked about starting trying to have kids of their own; little did she know, since being shot, her husband had been thinking about the same thing, but, like her, he was waiting for the right time.
This situation was making Sam very stressed, but he was very grateful. Oliver was away for the weekend with his girlfriend, and there was no-one else he trusted with Mya. He may not have liked Collins, simply because McNally had chosen Nick over him, but he did know that he was a good man and a good police officer and he knew that McNally was happy and he had always imagined that Andy would be good with kids. Before he left, he said that he would give them a bottle of wine after the weekend was over, to thank them for helping him out, but Mya was still resting in his arms, peacefully. As Andy was talking to Sam, Nick was making faces at the baby, which was making her smile and make happy noises. Sam knew that it was time to go, so he kissed Mya, then passed her to Andy, before saying thanks and goodbye before the left.
Briefly, Andy and Mya just stared at each other and Andy was slightly unsure of what to do, until she just smiled at the baby, then turned to see Nick standing still, smiling at the two of them, with the bag of Mya's things Sam had left them. The weather was cold, but beautiful, so Andy decided, once they'd wrapped Mya into gloves and hats, to go to the park. The same park she had taken Christian to, the first time she had seen how good Nick was with the child, the same day she had realised that she was falling in love with him. He had been in love with her for months before that.
The park was quite busy with families and children and, when Andy sat down on the bench and admired the view, Nick took Mya into his arms, giggling her about so that she was happy and then, carefully, placed her into the swing and, like he had done with Christian and, very gently, pushed her. The baby instantly started laughing and smiling and Nick stayed with the swing for the whole time, making 'whoosh' noises.
He stopped it and Mya reached out to touch his face and Andy felt as if this sight was melting her heart, because Nick was so patient and saying, "Yes, that's my face, Mya. That's right. Is that your face?" He held her scarf across her eyes and asked, "Where have you gone, Mya?" Mya didn't understand the game, but she was enjoying it and she pulled it down and pressed her hands again on Nick's face. "Yes! There you are! Who's a clever girl? Do you want to go again? Whooose!"
Sitting there, watching the two of them, Andy started to imagine the scene with a child of their own. Whilst she understood that, for Nick, losing his parents as a child had been very damaging, it had not made him totally averse to having a family of his own; in fact, it was quite the opposite, because he had always wanted a happy home, full of happy children, and Andy was his wife, his best friend, who he wanted to be the mother of his children and he was always so honest and open, even when he was sad about his parents. Seeing him with Leo and Mya now, and having him being shot, made Andy realise that that was what she wanted.
Her thoughts were interrupted when her husband called, "Do you want to join us?" With the bag of Mya's things, she ran over and threw her arms around her husband and kissed him and he returned the gesture, before she returned her attention to Mya. "Do you want me to sing to you, Mya? Do you want that? Has Uncle Nick tired you out with all of this stuff? Do you want Auntie Andy now? Just don't tell your mummy, okay?"
Mya reached out for Andy and Nick felt his heart swelling, because it was such a sweet thing and he was so glad that Andy had not allowed her mother abandoning her as a child to affect her relationship with children, being open to the idea of being a mother. Very carefully, Andy lifted Mya out of the swing and held her in her arms. "How does the Grand Old Duke of York go, Mya? Do you know that one?" She started to sing the song and Nick stepped closer to her and Mya and started to sing along with them and the baby clearly liked it and both Andy and Nick were happy too, grinning from ear to ear. The happiness of this baby was infectious, even if she was Sam's baby.
After a good ten minutes of singing, they decided to get some a hot chocolate, because it was so cold, so Nick ordered them and then returned with them, to sit next to his wife and the baby. Though Mya had been very happy to be with Andy, she started to reach out for Nick, so Andy passed the baby to her husband, who settled the baby girl on his knee, then kissed Andy on the cheek, but he could tell Andy was distracted and it wasn't in a happy way, like her day-dreaming earlier. Moving Mya around on his knee, he inquired, "Andy, what's wrong?"
Andy shrugged and replied, looking down at Mya before looking at her husband. "It's just- everything with Sam and Marlo is so complicated. They fight so much over this baby and she's the cutest thing in the world. I get they both love her, but it isn't fair to her for them to always be fighting. It's just so complicated. She deserves better than that."
Nick smiled slightly and nodded. "Yeah, I know what you mean, but the bright side is, Mya has two parents who love her." With his free hand, he reached his gloved hand to Andy's chin and whispered, "You and I both know that's one of the most important things in the world."
With her cold hands wrapped around the warm hot chocolate, Andy smiled and nodded, before she whispered, "How is it that you always make me so happy?" She kissed him quickly, before she rested her head on his shoulder, looking down at Mya and then looking at her husband. This was perfect.
By the evening, Mya was becoming very tired and Andy fed her whilst Nick prepared their own dinner, but, afterwards, Mya was still crying and she needed her milk before she went to sleep. Andy took her onto the sofa, into her arms and she fed her, with a bottle and she slowly started to stop crying and she started to make happy noises. After the bottle was finished, Nick watched as both his wife and Mya fell asleep on the sofa and Mya looked so comfortable there and Andy looked so comfortable holding her that he didn't want to disturb that for a while. Eventually, he carefully lifted Mya out of Andy's arms and carried her to her Moses Basket (which Sam had left in a bag for them) and placed her down very gently. For a couple of seconds, Mya opened her eyes, so Nick knelt down by the Moses basket and sang Twinkle Tinkle, until her eyes closed again.
Due to Andy being so deep into her sleep, Nick carried her to bed and placed her down, gently, pulling the covers over her before going to bed himself. He kissed her goodnight and told her he loved her.
The rest of their weekend with Mya was a good one, but they were both very tired when Marlo came to collect her daughter on Sunday evening.
As soon as Marlo had taken Mya home, Andy and Nick sat down on the sofa and Andy rested her head against the back of the sofa. "That was great- but so tiring! I don't know how Marlo does that, mostly on her own." She paused, then lifted her head and smiled, "I was watching you with Mya. You'll be a great dad."
"You'll be a great mum, too." They both paused and looked at each other, then Nick laughed and asked carefully, "We love our lives as they are now and, physically, a baby would affect you more than me. What are you thinking?"
Turning to face her husband, Andy replied, "I think that we start trying to have a baby. I know we've only been married for 3 months. But when you were shot, I was thinking about how I don't want to wait, in case anything happened to either of us."
Nick grinned and kissed her passionately before whispering in her ear, "I thought the same thing. Plus, trying will be a lot of fun!"
"Shut up!" Andy mock-scolded, before they kissed passionately and made their way to their bedroom. With their job, there was no grantee of what was in the future and their love for each other was so strong and they had rest of their lives together and, hopefully, having children would be another chapter in their lives, in their marriage, and it would give them both the family they wanted, together.
