The wedding chapter :)
"Ladies and gentlemen, I now present Mr. and Mrs. Summers!" Scott looked at his wife as they walked back down the aisle to the cheers and applause of their family and friends. They got to the opposite side of where the crowd was and just took a few moments to relish in the fact that they were finally married.
"I love you," he whispered.
"Well that's good, Mr. Summers. You're stuck with me now."
"I can think of worse things," he smiled.
"Are you ready for the well wishers?" Scott quietly groaned as their wedding party lined up with them to thank and greet the people who attended the nuptials.
"Congrats, guys," Evan said, carefully hugging Madelyne before shaking Scott's hand.
"Thanks, Spyke," Scott replied. "And thanks for coming. We weren't sure…"
"I won't be able to stay for the reception. Too much of a chance of being followed. But… Auntie O knows how to find me. If you guys need anything, let me know."
"We will, Evan. Thank you." Evan nodded and walked away.
"Oh my goodness! It feels like only yesterday when you first walked into the diner. And now you're married and going to be a father!" Scott grunted as Ms. K launched herself at him, enveloping him in a hug.
"Congratulations, Scott. Maddie, I'll have to give you my secret recipe for my fry seasoning for this lug," Hector said as he carefully hugged Madelyne.
"Thank you both for coming," she said. "I'm sure today wouldn't have happened without you."
"Oh, Maddie. Of course it would have!"
"No, I'm sure Scott would have starved to death before we could have even met if it weren't for the two of you!" Ms. K and Hector laughed. Ms. K kissed Scott's cheek before they walked away. They continued to receive words of congratulations from their other guests. Most were X-Men, or people they knew because of the X-Men.
"Congratulations!" Scott and Madelyne were gathered into a hug from Ch'od.
"Careful now, old friend," Chris said. "Watch out for my grandkids there." Ch'od grinned, at least, Scott thought it was a grin, as it was hard to tell on a lizard-man, and sat them down.
"Ah, Corsair! You know how excited I get at weddings. When are you and Lady Hepzibah taking that step?"
"You'll have to talk to her about that." Chris waited for the line to end before he stepped over to Scott and pulled him into a hug.
"Thanks, Dad," Scott whispered. "Thanks for being here, and being part of our day."
"Nothing could have stopped me, kid. I wish…" Chris sighed.
"Me, too," Scott said sadly. "But I'm happy to have Mom. She helped go above and beyond," he told Chris, looking around at the tent lined with lights, the snow, the heaters, and everything else Hepzibah could think of that made it feel like Alaska.
"I had to talk her out of the bears," Chris winked. Scott smiled and shook his head. "Madelyne, I hope this day was everything you dreamed it would be."
"More than I could have hoped for, Chris," she said, pulling her shawl over her arms. "Storm and Hepzibah should become wedding planners."
"I'll be sure to let them know," Chris chuckled. "Alright, you two. Pictures and then party!" Scott nodded and led Madelyne to the photographer. It took over half an hour for the photographer to take his pictures of the bride and groom, but he finally nodded.
"Are there any others you would like?"
"My parents," Scott said. "And my grandparents. And my brothers. All separately with the two of us. And then the entire bridal party, and then some special guests with just us." The photographer nodded. Scott motioned the bridal party to them and had Chris and Hepzibah pose with them first. After several poses with them, Deborah and Philip had their turn.
"Proud of you, boy," Phil told him.
"Thanks, Grandpa."
"You better take care of her, or there'll be hell to pay, got it?"
"Yes sir." Phil nodded and soon, the two were replaced with Alex and Gabriel.
"So many pictures," Alex complained.
"Just a few more," Madelyne told him. "Just think of how happy you'll be to have these pictures of you and Lorna later."
"If I'm ever allowed to see her again," Alex muttered.
"You're about to go on a cruise in the Caribbean," she reminded him, "with Storm and Warren as your chaperones. Just don't go too far, and no one will know." Alex looked at her in shock.
"Maddie, I'm glad you're my sister now."
"Me too, Lex," she said with a smile. Soon, the entire bridal party joined the four and several pictures were taken of them.
"Now these special guests?" The photographer asked. Scott looked to the tent and smiled.
"They're coming," he said as Nathan, Nate, and Carrie walked over.
"Are you sure about this?" Nathan asked. "These are your wedding pictures."
"Yeah, and you're family. Get over here and smile." Their children stood closely around them and smiled at the camera.
"Thanks," Nate said. "I know these pictures will mean a lot to us in a few years." Scott nodded.
"And now, it's party time." Scott led Madelyne to the entrance of the tent. The DJ nodded and lowered the volume of the music.
"Making their first public appearance, may I present Mister and Missus Scott Summers!" Scott and Madelyne smiled and walked into the warmed tent to the cheers and applause of their friends. They went immediately to the dance floor of the tent and Scott placed his hands on Madelyne's waist as the DJ began playing the song they had picked out for their first dance as husband and wife. Halfway through, Madelyne looked up at him with a grimace.
"I need to sit down," she whispered. "I feel like my back is about to break."
"Alright, love. Give me a second." Scott turned her and caught Chris' eye, giving him a signal they'd decided upon if something needed to stop for Madelyne's sake during the wedding. Chris nodded and walked to the DJ. The DJ nodded as well and faded the music out before starting a different song for the guests. Scott quickly led Madelyne to the sweetheart table and pulled her chair out for her.
"What can Hepzibah do, Maddie-girl?"
"I just need to sit for a few minutes," Madelyne said. "I've been on my feet all afternoon, and… Ororo? Can I have a pile of snow under the table for my feet?"
"Of course! And that is a brilliant idea. I'll have to see if the other ladies want me to do that for them as well." Storm waved her hands gently and Madelyne sighed in relief as the cold touched her feet.
"Thank you. Hepzibah, can I trouble you for a drink?"
"It is no trouble, Maddie-girl. Hepzibah will be right back."
"What can I do, love?" Scott asked, putting down a small plate of finger foods in front of his new bride.
"Just walk around and thank everyone for coming? I don't know. I was hoping this wouldn't happen today."
"You're pregnant, Maddie. I'm sure they understand. And if they don't, then they're not here." Madelyne smiled as Hepzibah placed a cup of punch in front of her. "Just let me know when you're feeling a bit better, and we'll get back to the dancing, alright?" She nodded and Scott kissed her before walking to the guests.
*If we can start with you, I'll be ready in a minute,* Madelyne telepathically sent to Scott after about fifteen minutes of resting for her and mingling for him.
*Alright, love. I'll let the DJ know.* Scott subtly made his way to the DJ and informed him of the slight change in order.
"Ok. You want me to cut the song short, or let it play?"
"Let it finish," Scott requested. The DJ nodded and Scott walked to the sweetheart table, kissing Madelyne. "You sure you're up for this?"
"I'll never get the chance for theirs," she said. Scott nodded and squeezed her hand.
"If I could have the groom and his mother on the dance floor?" Scott looked at Hepzibah, who looked shocked.
"Mom?" he said, holding his hand out. Hepzibah grinned at him as she took his hand, allowing him to lead her to the dance floor.
"Scott-boy did not need to do this for Hepzibah."
"Nonsense. Grooms dance with their moms at their weddings. You're my mom, aren't you?"
"Hepzibah is honored to be Scott-boy's mother."
"Good," he said, beginning to lead her in a dance. After a minute of them dancing alone, Scott looked up and saw Madelyne leading Nathan to the dance floor. Nathan was giving her a soft smile as he gently twirled her around. Scott watched him nod after a moment and was soon replaced with Nate, who was grinning widely.
"Scott-boy and Maddie-girl are wonderful parents."
"Thanks," Scott said, giving her a small smile as they danced. "You and Dad are pretty great, too, Mom." Soon the song ended and Scott kissed Hepzibah's cheek.
"The bride has asked for a special dance with her first father figure. Captain Summers?" Phil blinked a few times before standing and walking to Madelyne on the dance floor.
"Why me?" He asked her, once they started dancing.
"Captain Summers, you were the only male figure in my life for nearly ten years. You answered questions, you taught me about life, and you showed me what a happy marriage looked like, and how a husband was supposed to treat his wife. It's because of you and Grandma Deb that I even met Scott. Quite literally, since he wouldn't be here if it weren't for your son. It's the same reason I asked you to walk me down the aisle." Madelyne was graced with a rare Phil Summers smile.
"I could think of no one better to marry into this family," he told her. "It's been an honor watching you grow up, Madelyne. Knowing you're carrying my great-grandchildren has done my heart a world of good."
"I know this has to be why Nathan is named Nathan. I can't imagine not honoring you while Scott honors his father and mentor." Phil stopped dancing and hugged Madelyne to him.
"I never thought I'd love someone marrying into this family as much as I did Katherine, but you've gone and surpassed that." Madelyne pulled away and carefully wiped at her face.
"I just hope I make Scott as happy as Katherine made Chris." Phil turned her and pointed. Madelyne smiled when she saw Scott dancing with Carolyn.
"You have already made him happy, Maddie. That's the same smile Chris had the minute Scott was born. The smile of a proud father. He wouldn't be doing that without you." Scott felt eyes on him and looked at Madelyne before smiling at her and motioning with his head to Nathan dancing with Hope. Before long, the song ended. Scott kissed his daughter's forehead and walked over to his new wife.
"Everything ok?" He asked, seeing her red eyes.
"Everything is wonderful," she told him with a smile. "But I'm starving, so hopefully it's time to eat soon." Scott nodded.
"I'll let the caterer know. Why don't you go sit down? We are paying to have the food brought to us, after all." Madelyne nodded and kissed him. "Careful, Maddie. We still have quite a bit of time before we can leave," he smirked.
"No one will notice if we disappeared for a few minutes, would they?" Scott chuckled.
"I'm pretty sure they would. Just another two hours or so, love. We'll leave and start our lives as husband and wife." Scott led her to their table and pulled her chair out for her. "I'll be back in a minute." He walked off and found the caterer.
"Mr. Summers. Are you ready?"
"The bride certainly is. And now that I'm smelling it, I'm with her." The caterer gave a small laugh.
"We'll have the food out in a moment."
"Thank you." Scott walked away, heading back to the sweetheart table.
"Everything going ok?"
"Yeah, Dad. Maddie's hungry, so I was asking the caterer if we could get started. We'll eat and then toasts, then cake, and then the garter and flower toss, right?"
"That's what I have written." Chris took a deep breath. "Love you, kid."
"Love you, too. You're still good to cover us when we escape, right?" Chris smirked.
"That's the Best Man's job, right?"
"The bride and groom would like me to announce that dinner will be served momentarily," the DJ announced before turning the music back up.
"I think that's my cue to get back to Maddie. Um. Dad?"
"Yeah son?"
"You're not… You're not disappointed, are you?"
"Extremely, but only because your mother isn't here to see the amazing man you have become. I look forward to seeing you as a husband and a father, Scott." Scott gave him a small smile before being pulled into a hug. "God, I love you, kid."
"Can't really call me that much longer, can you?" Scott joked as he pulled out of the hug.
"You'll always be my kid, Scott. Now go sit with your wife." Scott nodded and went to the sweetheart table. He sat next to Madelyne and gave her a smile.
"We're married," she said, grinning.
"We are."
"I never thought we'd make it. Quite honestly, I thought you'd get grounded and have to miss this."
"Shocking I wasn't, isn't it?" Scott said dryly.
"With yesterday, yes," she replied, eye raised.
"Not fair." The conversation ended as plates began appearing in front of people. Madelyne took a deep breath.
"This smells amazing," she said, eyes closed. Scott put some food on his fork and held it in front of her mouth.
"Does it taste as good as it smells?"
"Even better," she said after chewing and swallowing. Scott smiled and began eating himself. Soon, the waiters and waitresses were walking around and collecting plates and then filling flutes with sparkling cider. Hepzibah stood first and the DJ gave her the microphone.
"Hepzibah would like to say some things about Maddie-girl," she said, smiling in slight embarrassment as the crowd turned to look at her. "Maddie-girl, when Scott-boy met you, Scott-boy was in love. Hepzibah did not know Scott-boy well yet, but Hepzibah could see how Scott-boy looked at Maddie-girl. It was how Corsair looked at Hepzibah, and Corsair's face when he spoke of Katherine-wife. Hepzibah got to know Maddie-girl and now Hepzibah believes that Scott-boy and Maddie-girl were made for each other. Hepzibah loves you, kitlings, and Hepzibah is very happy you are married. To Scott-boy and Maddie-girl." Hepzibah raised her flute and the crowd echoed her before sipping their drinks. Scott kissed Madelyne as she wiped her face. Scott took her hand and squeezed it as Chris took Hepzibah's place.
"Hello everyone. I'm fairly certain everyone knows who I am, but just in case, I'm Chris Summers. I'm the Best Man and father of the groom. So unlike most best men, I truly have known Scott since the moment he entered this world. Scott was a child unlike any other. While I was deployed, he seemed to understand that it was his job to protect his mother, and later his brother Alex. While I was home, he was quick to revert back to a normal, rambunctious child. I never imagined our family would be separated the way it was. Not many of you know, but when Katherine and I pushed Scott and Alex from the plane, Scott switched to his protector roll. He pulled Alex from the burning parachute and held him, and when he realized they were about to hit a multitude of rocks, Scott's powers made their debut and he slowed their descent, and then he twisted his body to protect his younger brother from being hurt in the rocks. That's the kind of person my son is. Once he sees you as family, he will quite literally do everything in his power to protect you. I suppose that was how I knew that he and Madelyne would become a couple. When Gabriel arrived at my parents' cabin last year, it felt almost like an earthquake. Scott pulled Madelyne down and protected her.
"Maddie, you have chosen to marry a fine young man, and I'm not just saying that because he's my son. He has sacrificed more than any eighteen year old should to be where he is, but the one thing he refused to sacrifice was a life with the woman he loved. He even went so far as making sure you'd be entwined with him forever," he smirked. "I have never seen a couple so right for each other since my wedding to Scott's mother, and then meeting Hepzibah. I'm pleased the two of you found each other, and I'm thrilled that this was a part of my son's life that I didn't miss. I look forward to watching you two grow as a couple, and become parents. I love you both. To Scott and Maddie." Chris raised his glass to his son and daughter in law before taking a small sip.
"I know I'm not part of the bridal party," Nathan said, standing, "but the best man gave me his ok to speak as well." Scott and Madelyne looked at Nathan in confusion. "I'm Nathan Summers. Most of you know the truth, but some of you are still under the impression that I'm Scott's uncle. I'm actually his son. I had the privilege of meeting my parents before they actually knew each other. I believe I arrived the day they first met. I was able to see their relationship start and flourish, something I doubt anyone else can say they experienced. My parents are some of the bravest, strongest people I've ever met. When they were introduced to me as their son, they accepted it and took it in stride. I'd never felt so wanted. I got to hear my dad the first time he said he was in love with my mom. He didn't know it, but he was broadcasting his feelings, and as his son, his natural shields don't block as well against me. I could actually feel how much he loved her. It was breathtaking. I've been married before, and engaged, but I never felt even half of what my dad still feels for my mom. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness and patience, especially when dealing with Carrie and me. Thank you for showing us that true love exists. We love you," he said, gesturing to Nate and Carolyn. Nathan went to the table and carefully hugged Madelyne.
"We love you, too, Nate," she whispered. "We love you so, so much." Scott hugged Nathan as well.
"Thanks," he said quietly. "Thank you for telling me about her and giving me the courage needed to approach her. Knowing you are my son is one of the greatest things that could have happened to me." Nathan pulled out of the hug.
"Thank you for keeping me this time. I'm glad I'll get to grow up with my family."
"Ok, you need to stop or I'm going to just keep crying," Madelyne said, wiping her eyes again.
"Sorry Mom. Um. The three of us might step out for a minute with the garter toss, if you don't mind," Nathan said, blushing. Scott turned red with him.
"Yeah, I don't think I blame you," he said. "Quite honestly, I wanted to skip that part, but your mom was adamant that it's a tradition, so," Scott shrugged. If anything, Nathan just blushed harder. "But it's cake next, so you're safe." Nathan nodded and went back to his own seat. Scott let out a breath and sat back down.
"Apparently our kids know exactly how we feel about each other. I don't know if that makes me happy, or if we should be concerned," Madelyne said with a smile.
"They know their parents are in love. I'd be happy. There are lots of people out there who would give anything to know their parents more than tolerated one another." The two were quickly ushered to the cake table. Scott put his hand over Madelyne's and they sliced the cake together. The piece was put on a plate, which Scott promptly shoved into Madelyne's face. Madelyne shrieked and the entire top tier went flying off the cake and chased Scott around the tent. It finally caught him and smashed into his face, causing everyone watching to laugh.
"Need help?" Chris chuckled. Scott scraped the cake off of his glasses and from over his mouth.
"You think?" Chris shook his head, smiling, as he grabbed several napkins and wiped the worst of the mess off.
"You'll need to go to the bathroom and finish, but you're not in danger of it falling on the floor or your suit."
"Thanks, Dad."
"Not the first time I've had to wipe cake off your face, kiddo." Scott gave him a small smile before looking at Madelyne. He saw her smirking at him and he couldn't help but smile at her.
"I think we're about ready to finish up here, Dad," he said.
"You sure?" Scott nodded, not taking his eyes off of Madelyne. "Ok, kid," he said. "Let's do the last bit and we'll get you out here."
"Oh, here," he said, pulling two envelopes from his jacket pocket. "This is for the DJ, and this is for the caterer. Would you mind making sure they get them?"
"No problem," Chris replied, putting the labeled envelopes in his suit pocket. "How about you head over to Maddie? It'll be easier to get this moving if you were near one another." Scott nodded and started walking to Madelyne.
"You've got a little something on your face," she smirked.
"It's fine," he whispered. "I have all night to have you make it up to me now."
"And if I decide I'm exhausted and want to sleep?" Madelyne asked, raising an eye.
"Then maybe I'll have to spank you for throwing food," he said with an evil grin.
"You wouldn't!"
"I suppose you'll just have to wait and see, won't you?" Their conversation was stopped as a chair was placed in front of their table and the announcement for all single males to come to the dance floor. Scott, trying not to blush, went under Madelyne's dress to remove her garter. He ran a finger up her leg and under her underwear before sliding the garter down her leg. He came back out, smirking at his new wife, before he snapped the garter over his shoulder without even looking at where he was aiming.
"Great," he heard Logan mutter. Scott turned and saw that it had landed on Logan's head.
"Sorry, Logan," he grinned. *And it seems to me that someone liked the idea of being spanked. You were practically gushing, my love.* Even through his glasses, Scott could see the color change of Madelyne's face. *My blushing bride.* The single men were ushered from the floor and replaced by the single females. Madelyne took her toss bouquet and turned around, almost ready to throw it over her shoulder.
"No powers, Maddie!" Madelyne turned and winked at Lorna before tossing the flowers behind her. At the cheers, she turned and looked, seeing Lorna had in fact caught the bouquet. Lorna looked stunned and then she turned to grin at Alex. Alex was blushing and refusing to look at Gabriel, who was laughing at his brother's expense. The DJ began playing music and several X-Men began dancing. Scott turned to Madelyne and raised an eye.
"We can escape now. They've eaten and had cake, and are busy enjoying themselves. Dad has the balance for the caterer and the DJ to give for us, so we're free and clear."
"Let's go change and then we can go. But I want to tell the kids goodbye. Nathan said they were going to head home tomorrow."
"I understand they have to go. I just wish they didn't…"
"I know," she said, sadly. "Come on. Let's go. Our suitcases are in the car, right?"
"That was one of the last things I did before getting ready," Scott told her. "Less of a chance that anyone would mess with them." Madelyne nodded and the two began inching their way out of the tent. Chris saw them leave and he gave them a sad smile.
"Lover?"
"My boy's a married man now, Hep. It feels like just yesterday that Katherine told me she was pregnant, and now… Now he's heading off on his honeymoon."
"Alex-boy and Gabe-boy are leaving for cruise tomorrow afternoon. Maybe Hepzibah and Corsair can have small trip?" Chris looked at Hepzibah and smirked.
"You just want to go somewhere where you know we can get crazy." The innocent smile he got in return had Corsair laughing. "Alright, love. I'll book us a couple night stay somewhere nice after we get this cleaned up. You'll be responsible for packing."
"Why pack clothes when they won't be used?"
"Maybe I want to see you in some different clothes," he grinned.
"Hm. Hepzibah might make that work." Chris kissed her quickly. When he pulled away, he saw Nathan leading Nate, Carolyn, and Hope out of the tent. He frowned and rushed over to them.
"Where are you going? You're not leaving tonight, are you?"
"Mom and Dad want to say bye," Nate explained. "We'll be back to help clean up. Probably drag Dad down with us since it was technically his wedding."
"Alright then," Chris said, feeling a bit better. "Tell Scott to sneak out through the garage. His car has a full tank, so it's ready to go."
"We will, Grandpa. We'll see you in a minute." Chris nodded and the four disappeared.
"Took you long enough," Scott said, now in shorts and a T-shirt.
"We wanted to make sure we weren't seen, but Grandpa saw us. He said to make sure you snuck out through the garage, and that your car has a full tank."
"Tell him I said thanks," he said with a small smile. "Are you guys sure you've got to leave tomorrow?"
"Yeah," Nate said sadly as he saw Madelyne coming out of her room in a white maternity dress.
"We don't want to intrude next week when you two get back. Almost everyone is going on the cruise, so it would just be… awkward waiting for you to get home. And you two need time alone," Carolyn said, blushing at the last sentence.
"We'll really miss you four," Madelyne said, tearing up.
"You'll have us before you know it," Nathan said. "But it's going to be a rough summer. Scott… after he found out about last week, he made it very clear that we weren't to return until…"
"Until what, Nathan?" Scott asked. "Until Apocalypse was handled? How can we do that when that's someone you still fought hundreds of years in the future?"
"He said until at least Legion was handled."
"Who's Legion?" Madelyne asked, tilting her head.
"David Xavier," Hope said, wincing at the look Nathan gave her.
"That name has been banned from coming out your mouth, or do we need to have a reminder?"
"I was just telling them the answer to their question." Nathan shook his head in annoyance.
*I'll be back,* he promised. *Probably a week or so after we're born.*
*Just you?*
*I don't see these two being allowed back here until Apocalypse is done, but he can't keep me from leaving.* Scott nodded and the two started hugging their children and granddaughter goodbye.
"Be safe."
"You guys, too," Carolyn said. "Um. Stay away from crowds. Not pleasant." Scott and Madelyne nodded seriously.
"We'll see you two in about five weeks," Scott smirked. Nate and Carolyn rolled their eyes and gave Hope $5 each. Hope just smiled and pocketed the cash.
"So predictable, Grandpa." Scott rolled his eyes.
"Behave tonight," Scott told them. "Don't let anyone in our room." At the four "yes sir's," Scott took Madelyne by the hand and led her out of the suite. They got in the elevator and went down to the first floor. Scott scoped the room, and seeing it empty, hurried Madelyne across the floor to the door to the garage. They stepped in and Scott quickly opened the door to his sports car for his wife before circling and getting in the driver's seat.
"Ready?"
"Ready," he answered. The garage door opened and Scott backed out, only for the two to be pelted with bird seed from their guests, led by Alex and Gabriel. Scott and Madelyne grinned and waved their goodbyes as they sped off down the driveway and onto the road.
